AB - Ceramic/polymer composites can be chemically stable, mechanically strong, and flexible, which make them candidates for electric devices, such as pressure or temperature sensors, energy storage or harvesting devices, actuators, and so forth. Depending on the application, various electrical properties are of importance. Polymers usually have low dielectric permittivity, but increased dielectric permittivity can be achieved by the addition of the ceramic fillers with high dielectric constant. With the aim to enhance dielectric properties of the composite without loss of flexibility, 5 wt% of BaTiO3-Fe2O3 powder was added into a polyvinylidene fluoride matrix. The powder was prepared by different synthesis conditions to produce core/shell structures. The effect of the phase composition and morphology of the BaTiO3-Fe2O3 core/shell filler on the structure and lattice dynamics of the polymer composites was investigated. Based on the results of the thermal analysis, various parameters of ceramic/polymer composites were determined. Differences in the phase composition and morphology of the filler have an influence on the formation of various polyvinylidene fluoride allomorphs and the degree of crystallinity. Furthermore, the dielectric performances of pure polyvinylidene fluoride and the polymer/ceramic composites were measured.

AB - Photocatalytic degradation of bisphenol A (BPA) was investigated using commercial TiO2 P25 nanoparticles supported on natural zeolite clinoptilolite (Cli). Employing ultrasound assisted solid-state dispersion method hybrid photocatalyst containing 20 wt% of TiO2, marked TCli-20, was prepared. The structural, morphological and surface properties, and particle size distribution of TCli-20 were studied by X-ray powder diffraction, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, ultraviolet–visible diffuse reflectance spectroscopy, scanning electron microscopy with energy dispersive spectroscopy, atomic force microscopy, Brunner-Emmet-Teller method and laser diffraction. The results revealed a successful loading of TiO2 P25 nanoparticles on Cli surface and the preservation of both zeolitic structure and optical properties of TiO2. The influence of catalyst dose, pH value and the addition of hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) was evaluated. The optimal reaction conditions were 2 g/L of catalyst at near-neutral conditions (pH = 6.4) for complete BPA (5 mg/L) photodegradation after 180 min of exposure to simulated solar light. The addition of H2O2 was beneficial for the degradation process and led to the removal of BPA after 120 min of irradiation. BPA removal (60% for 180 min of irradiation) was reduced when TCli-20 was tested in bottled drinking water due to the presence of bicarbonate ions which acted as scavengers for hydroxyl radicals. Even though the photocatalytic activity of TCli-20 decreased after several cycles of usage, 70% of BPA was still successfully degraded during the fourth cycle. The reusability study showed easy separation, stability and good photocatalytic ability of investigated cost-effective hybrid photocatalyst. © 2023, The Author(s), under exclusive licence to Springer-Verlag GmbH Germany, part of Springer Nature.

AB - Poly(vinylidenefluoride)–ZnO (PVDF–ZnO) nanocomposites with mechanically activated ZnO nanoparticle fillers were investigated using thermal and mechanical analysis and AFM and PFM. Differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) investigated the effect of ZnO nanoparticles on the crystallinity of the polymer, under controlled heating and cooling. Atomic force (AFM) microscopy was used to record the surfaces of the samples. Nanocomposite surface roughness shows the presence of the different phases inside of the matrix, where rough samples contain a higher proportion of the β phase. PFM was performed to investigate the piezoresponse of the composites. Nanoidentation showed that the mechanical activation of the filler (ZnO) increases the Young modulus with the activation time. Molecular simulations in periodic systems (PVDF–ZnO spherical nanocluster and nanocylinder composite) were used to investigate the influence of particle size and shape on the Young modulus of different phases of PVDF.

AB - The hybrid multifunctional magnetic organic/inorganic composite materials, with addition of optimal filler type and quantities are attractive due to wide range of potential application, from various pressure sensors, through smart packaging, to tissue engineering and medicine. The structural, morphological and magnetic properties of polyvinylidene fluoride/nanocellulose/magnetite@BaTiO3 hybrid films were investigated. The presented study revealed significant impact of nanocellulose (NC) content on formation of the polymorphs of PVDF, responsible for ferro-, piezo- and pyroelectric properties. The structural characterization, XRD and Raman measurements confirmed enhancement of the β and γ phases when the loading of NC higher then 4 wt% in multi-component hybrid films. The saturation magnetization value gradually raises with increasing amount of NC and reaches its maximum value of 41.2 emu/g at content of 4 wt% NC. Further, addition of NC decreases saturation magnetization value regardless of constant amount of magnetite, indicating optimal content of NC substrate for co-precipitation of Fe3O4 onto NC matrix.

AB - In the search for environmentally friendly materials with a wide range of properties, polymer composites have emerged as a promising alternative due to their multifunctional properties. This study focuses on the synthesis of composite materials consisting of four components: bacterial nanocellulose (BNC) modified with magnetic Fe3O4, and a mixture of BaTiO3 (BT) and polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF). The BT powder was mechanically activated prior to mixing with PVDF. The influence of BT mechanical activation and BNC with magnetic particles on the PVDF matrix was investigated. The obtained composite films’ structural characteristics, morphology, and dielectric properties are presented. This research provides insights into the relationship between mechanical activation of the filler and structural and dielectric properties in the PVDF/BT/BNC/Fe3O4 system, creating the way for the development of materials with a wide range of diverse properties that support the concept of green technologies.

AB - Barium titanate (BaTiO3) and polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF) based multifunctional materials are attracting a great scientific interest due to their excellent piezoelectric, pyroelectric and ferroelectric properties. These materials undergo controlled transformations through physical interactions and respond to environmental stimuli, such as temperature, pressure, electric and magnetic fields. Their properties strongly depend on synthesis procedures and obtained microstructures. This include intergranular contact surfaces of BaTiO3 based materials, as well as, porous structure and cross-linking patterns of PVDF prepared by electrospinning. It has been found that these microstructures can have fractal structure and that the fractal analysis can be used as a powerful tool for describing structural and functional properties of these materials. Having this in mind, in this research we have used different fractal methods for the reconstructions of various BaTiO3 and PVDF microstructure morphologies. Fractal analysis has been performed by using scanning electron microscope micrographs and computational modeling tools. Fractal dimension of irregular morphologies which exhibit fractal regularity were determined by using box-counting method. This method enables the analysis of self-similar microstructure morphologies by quantifying the rate at which an object's geometrical details develop at increasingly fine scales. Theory of Iterated Function Systems and Voronoi tessellation, have been used for modeling BaTiO3 random microstructures and PVDF porous structures. A python algorithm was created to determine the distribution of pore areas in SEM micrographs. Algorithm’s distribution of calculated pore surface areas was compared with measured pore surface areas and fractal reconstructions of different morphologies and their connection with functional properties were analyzed.

AB - In this study, we report the influence of vanadium oxide (VO), as a photosensitive component, on the photoactivity of TiO2 nanotubes (TNTs). A series of TNTs of varying tube diameter were synthesized by the anodization of titanium foils at different voltages, while vanadium oxide was deposited on TNTs by wet chemical deposition. An improvement in the optical properties of nanotubes was observed after the deposition of vanadium oxide. An improvement in the optical properties (redshift in UV-Vis spectra) of TNTs and TNT/VO was noted. The photocatalytic activity was improved with increasing tube diameter, while it was weakened after the deposition of VO. Furthermore, photoactivity was investigated in photodiodes based on TNTs or TNT/VO and single crystals of CH3NH3PbI3. The photoelectric measurement revealed that different TNT diameters did not influence the I-V characteristic of the photodiodes, while the deposition of VO improved the photocurrent for smaller TNTs.

AB - Suspended viable cells significantly influence the relative complex permittivity (dielectric constant) of the suspension. This influence depends on the concentration, viability, size, and even the cell shape. Hence, by measuring the permittivity, various fermentation processes can be monitored (e.g., in wine making and preparation of milk products). Thereby, the complex impedance (or admittance) between electrodes immersed into the suspension is measured and the permittivity is obtained by a suitable de-embedding procedure.
There exist various data in the literature on this influence, but they do not provide sufficient information for wide implementation of the technique. The aim of the paper was to experimentally investigate various aspects of the measurement procedures and establish practical guidelines and limitations.
Measurements were performed using an LCR meter, a classical vector network analyzer, and a nanoVNA analyzer, in the frequency range from 10 Hz to 100 MHz. Various suspension containers and systems of electrodes were designed and manufactured.
Bipolar systems of electrodes were found to be more suitable for higher frequencies than tetrapolar ones. Open electrode systems were found to be more prone to the influence of the environment than shielded systems (e.g., coaxial).
Good results were obtained for simple yeast suspensions. However, the presence of other cells and dispersed solids (e.g., in pressed grape juice) was found to completely overshadow the yeast cells. Electrochemical effects on the electrodes were found to be insignificant above around 200 kHz. Bubbles on electrodes, delamination, high concentrations of ions, and even temperature variations significantly hindered measurements in many cases.

abstract = "Suspended viable cells significantly influence the relative complex permittivity (dielectric constant) of the suspension.

AB - Magnesium aluminate has the spinel structure along with good mechanical, chemical, and thermal properties. Magnesium aluminate has a wide range of applications including refractory ceramics, optically transparent ceramic windows, and armors. Its low dielectric permeability and low loss tangent enable its applications for integrated electronic devices, as well. In this paper, MgO and Al2O3 powders were mixed in a one-to-one molar ratio and calcined at temperatures ranging from 1500 to 1800°C to produce phase pure spinel. Thereafter, pellets were crushed and treated in a planetary ball mill for 60 min to obtain a fine powder. All powders were examined for phase composition, crystal structure, and morphology. The obtained results showed that by increasing the temperature, samples with higher density were synthesized. Milling for 1 h led to formation of larger particles, but finer powders after milling. XRPD and Raman spectroscopy showed disorder in the crystal structure after milling.

AB - Due to the growing number of people infected with the new coronavirus globally, which weakens immunity, there has been an increase in bacterial infections. Hence, knowledge about simple and low-cost synthesis methods of materials with good structural and antimicrobial properties is of great importance. A material obtained through the combination of a nanoscale hydroxyapatite material (with good biocompatibility) and titanium dioxide (with good degradation properties of organic molecules) can absorb and decompose bacteria. In this investigation, three different synthesis routes used to prepare hydroxyapatite/titanium dioxide nanomaterials are examined. The morphology and semiquantitative chemical composition are characterized by scanning electron microscopy with energy dispersive X-ray analysis (SEM-EDX). The obtained materials’ phase and structural characterization are determined using the X-ray powder diffraction method (XRD). The crystallite sizes of the obtained materials are in the range of 8 nm to 15 nm. Based on XRD peak positions, the hexagonal hydroxyapatite phases are formed in all samples along with TiO2 anatase and rutile phases. According to SEM and TEM analyses, the morphology of the prepared samples differs depending on the synthesis route. The EDX analysis confirmed the presence of Ti, Ca, P, and O in the obtained materials. The IR spectroscopy verified the vibration bands characteristic for HAp and titanium. The investigated materials show excellent antimicrobial and photocatalytic properties.

AB - The rise of innovation in the electrical industry is driven by the controlled design of new materials. The hybrid materials based on magnetite/nanocellulose are highly interesting due to their various applications in medicine, ecology, catalysis and electronics. In this study, the structure and morphology of nanocellulose/magnetite hybrid nanomaterials were investigated. The effect of nanocellulose loading on the crystal structure of synthesized composites was investigated by XRD and FTIR methods. The presented study reveals that the interaction between the cellulose and magnetic nanoparticles depends on the nanocellulose content. Further, a transition from cellulose II to cellulose I allomorph is observed. SEM and EDS are employed to determine the variation in morphology with changes in component concentrations. By the calculation of magnetic interactions between adjacent Fe3+ and Fe2+ ions within composites, it is determined that ferromagnetic coupling predominates.

AB - In this study, microstructure evolution and dielectric properties of SrTiO3 ceramic have been investigated, whereby mechanical activation of SrTiO3 powders was used to modify the functional properties of ceramic materials. Microstructural SEM analysis of SrTiO3 ceramics showed that the increase in mechanical activation time results in less porous samples. Raman spectroscopy indicated changes in the broadening and asymmetry of the TO2 mode with a change in the time of mechanical activation. TO2 mode showed a Fano asymmetry due to its interaction with polarization fluctuations in polar micro-regions, which are a consequence of the presence of oxygen vacancies caused by activation. The maximum value of dielectric permittivity was observed in the sample activated for 10 min. Also, the sample activated for 10 min exhibits relatively low values of loss tangent, compared to the other mechanically activated samples, providing the best overall dielectric performance compared to other samples.

abstract = "In this study, microstructure evolution and dielectric properties of SrTiO3 ceramic have been investigated, whereby mechanical activation of SrTiO3 powders was used to modify the functional properties of ceramic materials. Also, the sample activated for 10 min exhibits relatively low values of loss tangent, compared to the other mechanically activated samples, providing the best overall dielectric performance compared to other samples.",

AB - The manuscript shows the studies of structural and magnetic properties of BaTiO3/Fe2O3 samples prepared using five different chemical routes. We show that the undertaken processes leaded to the decoration of BaTiO3 grains with hematite nanoparticles, but not to a creation of a well-defined core-shell structure. These studies revealed that a strong tendency of the iron-oxide nanoparticles to form agglomerates, significantly reduces the possibility of a continuous shell formation around the core, and at the same time it promotes inter-particle interactions between magnetic nanoparticles. A detailed analysis of the results obtained in the structural and magnetic studies, allowed to state that magnetic properties of these composites are dominated by the properties of fine iron-oxide nanopowder. The collected isothermal magnetization curves clearly indicate the canted antiferromagnetic properties characteristic for hematite, while the ac magnetization results exhibit the collective freezing process to the cluster glass like state (characteristic for interacting system of magnetic nanoparticles). This work provides detailed studies of systems prepared under different conditions and methods, which can serve as an important step towards obtaining well defined BaTiO3/Fe2O3 core-shell structures. © 2022 Elsevier B.V.

AB - Dual templating approach, using hexadecyltrimethylammonium bromide (CTAB), was employed in an attempt to synthesize hierarchical ZSM-5 zeolite. Amount of mesoporogen and the duration of aging of the precursor were varied. Majority of the synthesis routes resulted in phase separation, yielding separate ZSM-5 and amorphous mesoporous material. The relative amounts of the two phases were dependent on the CTAB amount ratio and also significantly on the duration of precursor aging before CTAB addition. One particular combination of the two factors led to the formation of a homogeneous hierarchical form of ZSM-5 with leafy morphology, consisting of intergrown thin crystalline sheets which formed flower-like structures. The hierarchical ZSM-5 possessed significant microporous (≈95 m2/g) and highly developed mesoporous surface (≈470 m2/g), with a relatively broad distribution of mesopore sizes (<20 nm). The acidity of all samples was studied in detail. Isothermal microcalorimetry/volumetry of ammonia adsorption provided quantitative data on the number and distribution of strength of acidic sites. In situ FTIR of pyridine and collidine adsorption was used to quantify Brønsted and Lewis acid sites, and to provide information on their location - in the micropores or mesopores/external surface. The hierarchical ZSM-5 possessed both Lewis and Brønsted acidity, with Brønsted sites located mainly in the micropores. All samples were fully characterized using XRD, low temperature nitrogen adsorption, FESEM and EDS. The synthetic route used for obtaining the ZSM-5 zeolite with flower-like morphology is a simple strategy for preparing hierarchical ZSM-5 forms targeting enhanced diffusivity and accessibility of catalytically active sites.

AB - Bisphenol A (BPA) is a well-known emerging contaminant that pose a severe threat to
human health due to its negative effect on the body’s endocrine systems. BPA is widely used in the production of polycarbonate plastic and epoxy resins and therefore often detected in different water environments. Since the conventional wastewater treatments for BPA removal haven’t been proven efficient it is important to find a green and efficient method for its complete elimination. Therefore, the aim of this work was to prepare a cost-effective hybrid photocatalyst based on TiO2 nanoparticles and natural zeolite clinoptilolite and study its photocatalytic performance toward BPA. The TiO2/clinoptilolite, containing 20 wt% of TiO2, was prepared using ultrasound assisted solid-state dispersion method and characterized using a multi-technique approach by combining X-ray powder diffraction, FTIR, UV Vis DRS spectroscopy, atomic force microscopy (AFM), BET measurements and laser diffraction. The study showed complete removal of BPA (5 mg/L) after 180 minutes of simulated solar irradiation using 2 g/L of hybrid photocatalyst, at pH = 6.4. The addition of H2O2 led to a faster BPA removal after 120 minutes of irradiation. When BPA removal was tested in bottled drinking water a lower removal of 60 % after 180 minutes of irradiation was observed because of the presence of bicarbonate ions and its scavenger effect toward hydroxyl radicals. The reused photocatalyst showed good photocatalytic activity in repeated cycles (e. i. 70 % of BPA was still successfully removed at the end of the 4th cycle).

AB - Earth-abundant, cheap and non-toxic zinc-based coordination compounds are drawing research attention as promising candidates for various applications, such as photoluminescent materials and anticancer agents. In this paper we report six zinc complexes (1–3-NO3 and 1–3-Cl) with pyridyl-based thiazolyl–hydrazone ligands, which differ in the nature of substituents at the ligands' periphery, anion type, and geometry around the metal ion. The complexes were characterized by single-crystal and powder X-ray diffraction analysis, as well as IR and NMR spectroscopy. The symmetrical complexes 2-Cl and 3-Cl, where zinc atoms are located at a two-fold axis, do not exhibit photophysical properties, unlike their asymmetrical analogs 2-NO3 and 3-NO3 with the same complex cation. Asymmetrical pentacoordinated 1-Cl and hexacoordinated 1-NO3 complexes exhibit photophysical properties. An admixture of allowed intra-ligand (1IL) and chloro (X)-to-ligand charge-transfer (1XLCT) electronic transitions is responsible for the fluorescence of the 1-Cl complex. The origin of the emission of the 1-NO3 complex is ascribed to an admixture of 3IL and ligand-to-ligand charge-transfer (3LLCT) forbidden electronic transitions, while for 3-NO3 most electronic excitations are of LLCT character. The thermal stability of the complexes is in accord with the strength of respective intermolecular interactions. The antiproliferative activity of the complexes was in the nanomolar range on some of the investigated cancer cell lines. Contrary to the increase of antiproliferative activity of the complexes in comparison to the free ligands in cancer cell lines, an acute toxicity determined in the brine shrimp assay follows the opposite trend. The overall results suggest that Zn(II) thiazoyl–hydrazone complexes have considerable potential as multifunctional materials.

AB - Goat cheeses from high heat treated milk (HHTM: 80 °C/5 min (E1) and 90 °C/5 min (E2)), could be regarded as new products, compared to their analogues made from commonly pasteurized milk (65 °C/30 min (C)). Descriptive analysis and consumer tests with a hedonic scale and JAR scale were part of the product development process. The use of scanning electron microscopy enabled deeper insight into the flavor and texture of the cheeses. In all cheese variants, goaty flavor was mildly pronounced. Young HHTM cheeses also had a pronounced whey and cooked/milky flavor. Consumers found such flavor ‘too intensive’. Unlike the control variant, HHTM cheeses were not described as ‘too hard’. Such improvement in texture was found to be a result of fine, highly branched microstructure, sustained over the course of ripening time and highly incorporated milk fat globules inside the cheese mass. Cluster analysis showed that the largest group of consumers (47.5%) preferred E2 cheese. Although consumers found that most of the cheeses were ‘too salty’, this excess did not decrease their overall acceptance. Neither microstructure analysis nor descriptive sensory analysis of goat white brined cheeses produced from high heat treated milk has been done before.

AB - Development in many areas of engineering and technology are closely linked to the development of new or improvement of existing materials. Having in mind wide use of bacterial nanocellulose (BNC) in various areas of everyday life, from biomedicine, ecology to electronics, BNC-based composites are becoming widely used and attracting the attention of the scientific community. It is especially important to examine in detail the synthesis parameters that affect the changes in the crystal structure and morphology of the obtained composites, having in mind that these changes have a crucial influence on their final functional properties. In this paper, a composite material based on bacterial nanocellulose BNC (as the matrix) and ferromagnetic Fe3O4 was studied. BNC was obtained by the activity of acetic fermentation bacteria after 7 days of growth in a suitable medium. The research is aimed to optimization of the Fe3O4 precipitation conditions. It's especially considering the time interval of BNC films spend in the iron salt solution. The influence of the performed synthesis conditions was considered by the SEMEDS, FTIR and XRD methods.

AB - Cellulose, as the main constituent of plants, is the most common natural material that is widely used. Bacterial cellulose (BC) is a polymer of β-1,4-glucan chains, extracellularly attached to bacterial cells. It possesses the same structure as plant cellulose but its application has many advantages. BC has tinner threads, better crystallinity, mechanical strength and higher purity. By the means of micro- and nano-pores in the structure, it is possible to retain nano particles and enhance the application of obtained nanostructures. BC lacks antibacterial and antioxidative activity, conductivity and magnetic properties, which lowers the possibility of its application in biomedicine and electronics. To overcome previously mentioned deficiency, it is possible to apply bioactive polymers, nanomaterials or solid particles into the structure. High biocidal potential of TiO2 originates from its photocatalytic properties, and the generation of reactive oxygen species (ROS). At the first site of action, they cause cell membrane damage and afterwards, they attack intracellular components causing cell death. Hydroxyapatite (HAp) is capable to act synergistically with TiO2 and to accelerate its efficiency. Having in mind all characteristics of previously mentioned components, we have investigated the structure, morphology, mechanical properties and antimicrobial activity of advanced ceramics/polymer films. The influence of synthesis duration on BC structure, produced by Komagataeibacter xylinus species, was investigated. Thereafter, the possibility of TiO2/HAp ceramic nanocomposite application in BC was examined. The developed structures were analyzed by SEM and EDS analyzes, as well as XRD and FTIR spectroscopy. Mechanical properties were investigated as well.

AB - Cellulose is a biopolymer with a wide range of properties like biocompatibility, hydrophilicity, porosity, good mechanical properties, biodegradability and non-toxicity. The properties and application of cellulose based materials are related to the source of the cellulose production. Despite the fact that the plant cellulose is playing a leading role in obtaining cellulose fibers, it has been found that ecologically and economically, a better source for obtaining cellulose is by fermenting a particular strain of bacteria. Although bacterial nano cellulose (BCN) based materials can be used in numerous industries, from the paper and food industries to biomedicine, their application in electronics is limited because bacterial cellulose does not have conductive and ferromagnetic properties. Having this in mind in this research, the results of the development of nanocomposite materials based on BCN modified with Fe3O4 has been presented. The differences in the interaction of Fe3O4 nanoparticles and BCN obtained by varying precipitation parameters were investigated and the effect of reaction time was followed by SEM-EDS, XRD, and FTIR analysis. It has been found that this type of modifications of the initial BCN, enables development of new composite materials with superior properties, which can be used in various fields of electronics.
