AB - This paper will focus on the minorities that played an important role in the politics of Serbian right-wing parties and will therefore not take into consideration, for instance, the Czechoslovakian community, which, as a Slavic ethnic group, was not seen with a negative bias or as a cause of concern. Special emphasis will be placed on the “northern” and “southern” minorities divided according to their geographic distribution in Yugoslavia. The first group included the Germans, Hungarians and Romanians, and the second the Albanians and the small Turkish community. The concluding part of the paper, dedicated to the period 1939-1941, will take a look at the political radicalization in Yugoslavia and the shift in the status of minorities, focusing on the Jews, who began to be seen as “different” and a national minority as late as 1940. As for political parties in Yugoslavia, the paper will focus on the Yugoslav Radical Union as the ruling party from 1935 to 1941 and the Yugoslav People’s M...

AB - The paper explores the ideological frameworks and political practices concerning the idea of Yugoslavism in the ranks of the heterogeneous movements covered by the umbrella term of the Serbian right wing. It is important to note that, for a significant number of political parties, movements and individuals, the attribute “Serbian” is used to reflect their regional origin and ethnic characteristics commonly associated with belonging to the Serbian community, as well as the vague distinction between the terms Serbdom and Yugoslavdom in the interwar period.

AB - Generally speaking, it can be said that, like in some other cases, Serbian nationalism and the “Serbian variant” of Yugoslav nationalism were radicalized in the interwar period, but fascism nonetheless failed to take root in the broader social context. Some champions of far right-wing views – sometimes organized into groups or organizations – had been active since the 1920s. One of the common characteristics of these individuals was their tendency to frequently change their political affiliation and switch from one organization or political party to another.

AB - When Bishop Nikolaj Velimirović was stripped of Yugoslav citizenship, the decision was justified by stating that he was a member of Zbor. Since then, he was portrayed in socialist Yugoslavia as “a fascist lackey” and a close ally of Dimitrije Ljotić. Numerous news articles were written about him as “the ideologue of Zbor,” and “a Hitler fan,” whose ideas would pollute the minds of Orthodox believers. During the Yugoslav wars of the 1990s, these stances were only magnified, and used to portray the entire Serbian Orthodox Church as fascist. Although those works can be dismissed as wartime propaganda, they serve as a great example of the political importance of the ties between Bishop Nikolaj Velimirović and Dimitrije Ljotić to this day.

AB - Following the German occupation of Yugoslavia, the Yugoslav National Movement ZBOR and its leader Dimitrije Ljotić became the faces of Serbian collaboration with the Axis powers. Like no other Serbian political movement, they cooperated with the occupiers and served as vanguard forces of the Nazi-installed Milan Nedić regime. Much was written on the movement’s politics within occupied Serbia, as well as their military branch, the Serbian Volunteer Corps. Those works, while focusing on the Second World War, correctly traced the roots of collaborationism to the interwar period and the covert ties the ZBOR movement had with various German political figures and organizations during that period. However, these attempts, despite being fully justified, remained superficial and teleologica

True Believers or Latecomers? Dimitrije Ljotić, ZBOR and the Nature of Fascism

AB - Dimitrije Ljotić strove to distance himself from fascism in his texts, arguing that he and his movement had little in common with the ideology of the Italian regime. An overly close identification with fascism could be construed as betrayal of Yugoslavism. At the same time, his criticism of political opponents usually revolved around the claim that they were not genuine national movements but imitations of foreign trends. Therefore, for ZBOR, admitting that the movement borrowed ideas from elsewhere meant political suicide. A closer reading of the texts authored by ZBOR members reveals many expressions of solidarity with fascist movements and regimes throughout Europe. Despite denying the generic features of fascism, ZBOR harbored awareness –even if diffuse – of belonging to the broader ideational wave of fascism.
