AB - The aim of this research was to obtain a carbon solid residue by the carbonization process of biomass in an inert atmosphere which, through physical activation and chemical treatment (using TEOS - tetraethyl orthosilicate) would allow creation of highly porous and spatially distinct ordered bio-SiC ceramics. The results of carbonization experiments at several operating temperatures and activation of carbons with multiple-cycle treatments TEOS clearly showed the possibility of obtaining SiC nano-structures, after performing the carbothermal reduction at 1400 °C. The increase in the activation temperature and the duration time starts the development of the SiC particles inside the porous structure. The XRPD analysis showed that the major SiC polytype has cubic SiC (β-SiC) structure and remainder is hexagonal SiC polytypic (α-SiC) structure. It was established that the carbons obtained from carbonization of the Platanus orientalis L. plane tree fruit (PTF) precursor and activated at 850 °C with longer holding times (1 and 2 h) exhibit β-SiC (cubic) nano-wires. A possible nano-wires increment mechanism was suggested. The obtained results represent significant contribution in understanding the process as well as the main characteristics of SiC nano-materials and their possible applications.

AB - Geopolymers (GP) were successfully synthesized from metabentonite (MB), metadiatomite (MD) and metakaolinite (MK). Characterization of their phase structure and microstructure was performed by XRD, FTIR, SEM/EDX methods. A SEM micrograph of GPMD shows a homogeneous surface with some longitudinal cavities in the gel, and it is significantly different from the micrographs of the other two geopolymer samples, GPMB and GPMK. A considerable amount of unreacted particles, as well as the presence of pores in the geopolymer matrix of GPMK and GPMD, indicate an incomplete reaction in the system. Aluminosilicate inorganic polymers, geopolymers, are quasi solid electrolytes which possess a high electrical conductivity at room temperature in relation to materials of similar chemical composition. The highest conductivity was found for the sample obtained from GPMK, amounting to 2.14 × 10–2 Ω–1cm–1at 700 ºC. The corresponding activation energies of conductivity for this sample amounted to 0.33 eV in the temperature range of 500–700 ºC. The geopolymer synthesized from metakaolin has good ionic conductivity values, which recommends it for use as an alternative material for an SOFC (Solid Oxide Fuel Cell).

AB - The purpose of this investigation is to investigate the hydrophobicity of geopolymers, new alumino-silicate materials and the influence of Si/Al ratio on their surface properties. Contact angle measurement (CAM) as reliable indicator of hydrophobicity was determined for synthesized geopolymers using water and ethylene-glycol as reference liquids. Geopolymers were synthesized from various precursors: kaolin, bentonite and diatomite. Characterization of phase structure and microstructure was performed by XRD, FTIR, SEM/EDX methods. Contact angle measurements confirmed that the geopolymers synthesized from metakaolin are the most porous, which can be explained by the smallest Si/Al ratio. The maximum value of contact angle and free surface energy (110.2 mJ/m2) has been achieved for geopolymer synthesized by diatoms (GPMD). SEM micrograph of GPMD shows a homogeneous surface with some longitudinal cavities in the gel and is significantly different from the micrographs of other two geopolymer samples, GPMB and GPMK.

AB - The paper presents results of the influence of mechanical activation of shungite, a carbon-mineral rock material rich in silica and carbon, on its sintering behaviour, and obtaining of pure SiC ceramics. The mechanical activation of the starting powder was performed in a high-energy ball mill in time intervals from 30 to 480 min. The phase composition of the starting powders and sintered samples was analysed by the X-ray diffraction method. The first traces of SiC were detected after sintering at 1350 °C for 2 h in an Ar atmosphere, along with traces of unreacted SiO2. The scanning electron microscopy was performed in order to determine changes in the microstructure. Sintering was performed at various temperatures for 2 h, in an Ar atmosphere and a vacuum. Dielectric properties of the sintered samples were measured in the frequency range from 1 to 500 MHz. The obtained results indicate that the sintered powder is a good candidate for applications as an absorber of electromagnetic waves in microwave engineering. © 2019 University of Novi Sad, Faculty of Technology. AB - Producing green and efficient energy sources is a major challenge. As a consequence, the use of photovoltaic devices for conversion of light into electricity is growing worldwide. A lot of effort had been invested to create high-efficient solar cells, but their durability, stability, flexibility and efficiency at low light intensities are still unexplored. Here, we built a flexible solar cell made of p-doped, amorphized a-undoped and n-doped Sb2S3 solid carrier loaded with electrolyte. Indium tin oxide glass was the working electrode, and aluminium was the counter electrode. Every (p–a–n) flexible Sb2S3/solid carrier layers were obtained using a cheap casting/solvent evaporation technique, from a blend consisted of chitosan, polyethylene glycol and electrolyte containing 0.5 M potassium iodide and 0.05 M iodine, and corresponding synthesized amorphized a-undoped and p and n-doped Sb2S3 semiconductor. Results show that flexible Sb2S3 solar cell possesses good stability and efficiency of about 10% at 5% sun. Overall, our findings demonstrate for the first time that flexible solar cell can be made and used for low light intensity applications. © 2018, Springer International Publishing AG, part of Springer Nature.

AB - The surface modification of commercial TiO2 Hombikat (TiO2) using nanoparticles of fullerene C60 with tetrahydrofuran (THF-nC60), as well as fullerenol C60(OH)24 nanoparticles (FNP) was investigated in this study. Characterization of THF-nC60, FNP, TiO2, TiO2/THF-nC60, and TiO2/FNP was studied by using DES, ELS, TEM, SEM, DRS and BET measurements and their photoactivity has been examined on the mesotrione degradation under simulated sunlight. It was found that FNP in self-assembled nanocomposite TiO2/FNP increased negatively charge, as well as catalytic surface of TiO2. In addition, TiO2/FNP exhibits a shift of band gap energy to lower values compared to TiO2 and TiO2/THF-nC60. BET surface area has not showed significant differences among catalysts. Furthermore, it was found that the highest photoactivity was obtained for TiO2/FNP system. Besides, influence of different concentrations of electron acceptors (H2O2 and KBrO3), as well as scavengers on the kinetics of mesotrione removal in aqueous solution with/without TiO2 and FNP under simulated sunlight was investigated. Namely, addition of mentioned electron acceptors has resulted in higher mesotrione degradation efficiency compared to O2 alone. Besides, in the first period substrate degradation probably takes place via hydroxyl radicals and after 60 min of irradiation the reaction mechanism proceeds mainly via holes. The most efficient system for mesotrione degradation and mineralization were TiO2/7 mM KBrO3 and TiO2/7 mM KBrO3/40 μl FNP, respectively. © 2017 Elsevier Ltd

AB - In our recent studies we have designed fullerenol/doxorubicin nanocomposite (FNP/DOX) as the new drug nanocarrier. This research has demonstrated that this novel nanocomposite has had better implications on the liver tissue in vivo (Wistar rats treated intraperitoneally), than treatment based only on DOX. FNP/DOX has been characterised by DLS, TEM and AFM measurements which have shown that DOX loaded onto FNP did not influence fullerenol nanoparticle's size. FNP/DOX affected oxidative status in blood causing a significant decrease of catalase and SOD activity in comparison to DOX, implicating the reduction in oxidative stress. qRT-PCR results on the mRNA level of antioxidative enzymes (catalase and MnSOD) revealed that the effect of oxidative stress is significantly reduced by the treatment with FNP/DOX (p <.05). The ultrastructural analysis of the liver tissue has revealed that FNP/DOX nanocomposite generated considerably less damage in the liver tissue, than DOX applied at the same dose. Hence, our results have indicated that FNP, within FNP/DOX nanocomposite, exhibits protective effects to the liver tissue of the healthy rats. © 2018

AB - This article presents the results of the compositional, structural and morphological study of geopolymers synthesized from metakaolin and an alkali activator. The study involved the investigation of the structural and chemical properties of the geopolymer, in addition to thermally treated geopolymers up to 600 and 900 °C. The precursor of the geopolymer, and the geopolymer samples before and after the thermal treatment, were investigated by Fourier transformation infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), X-ray diffraction (XRD), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) and SEM analysis. The corrected average value of the ratio of silicon and aluminum in the geopolymer samples (SiGP:Al) is about 1.46, which suggests that the obtained geopolymer samples represent a mixture of roughly equal amounts of sialate and sialate-siloxo units. Annealing the geopolymer samples at 600 °C decreases the amount of Si-ONa bonds and induces the cross-linking of polymer changes. At the same time, other sodium containing alumino-silicate phases are created. The thermal treatment at 900 °C leads to a considerable reduction of oxygen and particularly sodium, followed by significant morphological changes i.e. formation of a complex porous structure. Additionally, a new semicrystaline phase appears. Both XRD and XPS results imply that this new phase may be nepheline and it is plausible that this phase begins to nucleate at temperatures below 900 °C.

AB - In the present work, remediation of lead-containing solution using raw and modified kaolinite has been presented. The micro and nanostructure of samples has been characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and atomic force microscopy (AFM). Laser diffraction and scattering (LDS), was analyzed by particle size analyzer based on laser diffraction and particle size distribution (PSD) was done. The degree of metal adsorption was evaluated analyzing the Pb(II) contaminated samples by inductively coupled plasma atomic emission spectrometry (micro- and nanostructure on immobilization efficiency correlCP AES). The results show the impact of immobilization efficiency and ation between micro- and nanostructure. The thermodynamic data (Delta HA degrees, Delta SA degrees, Delta GA degrees) are calculated from the temperature-dependent sorption isotherms. The results suggest sorption process of Pb(II) on kaolinite as spontaneous and endothermic.

AB - Fullerenols are polyhydroxylated, water soluble derivatives of fullerene C60, with potential application in medicine as diagnostic agents, antioxidants or nano drug carriers. This paper describes synthesis and physical characterization of a new nanocomposite hydroxyapatite/fullerenol. Surface of the nanocomposite hydroxyapatite/fullerenol is inhomogeneous with the diameter of the particles in the range from 100 nm to 350 nm. The zeta potential of this nanocomposite is ten times lower when compared to hydroxyapatite. Surface phosphate groups of hydroxyapatite are prone to forming hydrogen bonds, when in close contact with hydroxyl groups, which could lead to formation of hydrogen bonds between hydroxyapatite and hydroxyl groups of fullerenol. The surface of hydroxyapatite
particles (−2.5 mV) was modified by fullerenol particles, as confirmed by the obtained zeta
potential value of the nanocomposite biomaterial hydroxyapatite/fullerenol (−25.0 mV).

AB - The study of the electrochemical reduction on acetonitrile modified platinum electrode and determination of trinitrotoluene (TNT) in neutral solution by simple galvanostatic technique is presented here. The obtained potential-time responses on the applied constant cathodic current pulses showed two potential transitions before achieving the steady-states, referring to the multi-step reduction process of nitro groups in TNT molecule. The calibration curves of the dependence of the square root of the first transition time (τ 0.5) on the TNT concentration were linear in the ranges 4.4 – 303.8 μM and 0.09 – 4.40 μM for applied constant current of 0.1 mA. The detection limit was 0.09 μM. The method was tested in the river water. The results indicated the sensitivity of the galvanostatic method for TNT determination in the environmental samples. From the first transition on the E-t curves the characteristics important for the understanding the mechanism of the reduction process were obtained. It was found that four electrons are involved in the reduction process of the first nitro group, indicating that the reduction product in a neutral electrolyte is hydroxylamine.

AB - The oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) was studied on the polycrystalline Pt electrode in 0.1 M NaCl electrolyte containing various amounts of acetonitrile (AcN). The state of the electrode surface was characterized by the cyclic voltammetry in oxygen free electrolytes, while ORR studies were performed on the polycrystalline Pt rotating disc electrode by the linear sweep voltammetry in oxygen saturated electrolytes. The acetonitrile is chemisorbed on Pt over a wide potential range, inhibiting both hydrogen adsorption and oxide formation. The extent of AcN chemisorption depends on its concentration in the solution. Initial potential of oxygen reduction is shifted negatively, while the ORR current is increasingly reduced with the increase of AcN concentration. Complete inhibition of ORR in the potential range of AcN and Cl-anion coadsorption is achieved for (0.1 M NaCl + 1 M AcN) solution.
