AB - In this work, we reported the fabrication of hybrid structures by growing the multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWCNT) on porous silicon (PS) as a template. Aligned multi-walled carbon nanotubes have been successfully synthesized on PS by ultrasonic spray pyrolysis (USP) using a solution of Toluene/Ferrocene as the precursor, while electrochemical anodization method was used to fabricate the PS layers. Au contact was deposited as a metallic contact on the MWCNT layer in order to measure the electrical properties and to analyze the electrical effect of the incorporation of MWCNT on PS. The structural and morphological characteristics of the hybrid structures were investigated by using Field Emission Scanning Electron Microscope (FE-SEM) showing that MWCNT formed a thin film on the PS surface in the form of an aligned array and perpendicular fiber-like structures to the porous surface. High-Resolution Transmission Electron Microscopy (HRTEM) images confirmed the diameter of the CNT between 10 and 30 nm and typically consisted of 10–20 concentric shells of carbon sheets. Raman Microscopy showed three characteristic bands and a high graphitization extent, even it was possible to observe that the carbon structures passivated the PS layer. Consequently, the photoluminescence (PL) spectrum of PS layers significantly was modified by MWCNT. Finally, electrical measurements provided a practical approach to describe how the materials behave under specific conditions that can be used for different applications in electronics or optoelectronics such as diodes or photodetectors. Significant differences were found under darkness, and illumination conditions of current-voltage (I–V) curves implied their possible application in optoelectronics. Moreover, symmetrical rectifying and Ohmic behavior was observed, which rarely has been reported in the literature, even it was possible to fit a transport mechanism, and the capacitance-voltage (C–V) curves presented an un-exponential behavior with interesting effects such as an increase of built-in voltage and negative capacitance. Based on the results obtained, the growth method for MWCNT structures was proposed.

AB - Micro and nanostructured brucite (Mg(OH2)) particles synthesized by hydrothermal method from solutions with high content of hydrazine (0.14 M) and nitrate (0.24 g) were compared with samples obtained from low hydrazine content (0.0002 M) and nitrate (0.12 g). The samples were heated at 180 °C for 4 h, 6 h and 12 h. XRD, TEM-HRTEM, SAED and image analysis techniques were used for the morphological and structural characterization. The effect of electron beam irradiation on the brucite dehydration was observed in atomic resolution images at 300 kV. Hexagonal crystals show differences in crystallinity, strains and kinetic of reaction. High hydrazine/nitrate samples have slightly larger crystals with better crystallinity, showing a strong preferential orientation. Rietveld refinements show how unit cell parameters are bigger in samples obtained with higher hydrazine/nitrate content, confirming also the preferential orientation along the 0 0 0 1 plane. Differences in the dehydration process show the rapid formation of a porous surface, the amorphised cortex or the presence of highly oriented strains in samples prepared from higher hydrazine/nitrate content. Conversely, crystals slightly smaller with randomly scattered defect surfaces showing the Mg(OH)2/MgO interphase in samples prepared with low hydrazine/nitrate content. Significant differences in the kinetic of reaction indicate how the dehydration process is faster in samples prepared with high hydrazine/nitrate content.

AB - Micro/nanostructured systems based on metallic oxide (ZnO) with noble metal (Ag) on the surface (Ag/ZnO) are synthesized by solvothermal method from zinc nitrate hexahydrate (Zn(NO3)2·6H2O), zinc acetate dehydrate (Zn(CH3COO)2·2H2O), zinc acetylacetonate hydrate (Zn(C5H7O2)2·xH2O) and silver nitrate (Ag(NO3)) as precursors. In these systems, polyvinylpyrrolidone (PVP) is used as surfactant for controlling particle morphology, size and dispersion. The obtained materials are characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), high-resolution transmission electron microscopy (HR-TEM), UV–vis diffuse reflectance spectroscopy (DRS), N2 gas adsorption–desorption (BET) and Raman spectroscopy (RS). By XRD results, all major peaks are indexed to the hexagonal wurtzite-type structure of the ZnO and samples with noble metal, extra diffraction peaks are detected which correspond to the face-centered-cubic (fcc) structure of the metallic Ag. Depending on used precursor, different morphologies have been obtained. Mainly, ZnO prims-like rods – NRs (with 0.8 ⩽ aspect ratio ⩾ 3.4) – have been observed. Quasi-spherical particles of metallic Ag (with diameters between 558 ± 111 μm and 22 ± 1 nm) have been detected on the ZnO surface. Photocatalytic results (all samples studied >30% MB degradation) verify the important effect of surfactant and the viability of synthesized Ag/ZnO micro/nanocomposites for environmental applications.

AB - Here, we report on the ZnO nanoparticles processing employing low-temperature (500 °C) ultrasonic spray pyrolysis (USP) method, using different Zn nitrate precursor solution concentrations (0.01, 0.1 and 1.0 M). Particle structural, morphological and luminescence characteristics were studied based on X-ray powder diffractometry, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, transmission electron microscopy (TEM/HRTEM), thermal analysis, UV–Vis diffuse reflectance spectra and photoluminescence measurements (PL). The generated so-called secondary particles have a hexagonal ZnO wurtzite-type crystalline structure with preferred orientation of (101) plane and quasi-spherical in shape. It was shown that such particle structural and morphological features are independent on the precursor solution concentrations used. All the PL spectra illustrate a strong green-yellow typical emission band exhibiting the corresponding redshift and variation of direct band gap from 3.22 to 3.12 eV with the increase in precursor concentration. The thermal analysis confirmed high thermal nanoparticles stability. The results proved that USP method successfully produces ZnO nanoparticles using neither dispersing agents nor post-heating treatments at high temperature, which allows rapid, continuous, single-step preparation, demonstrating a high potential for industrial applications.

AB - Noble metal/ZnO nanoparticles were synthesized by a solvothermal method. The influence of reaction time, noble metal presence or kind of noble metal (Ag or Pt) was evaluated. The prepared samples were characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), UV–vis diffuse reflectance spectroscopy (DRS) and BET surface area analysis. Hexagonal wurtzite and fcc were obtained for crystalline structures for ZnO and Ag/Pt, respectively. No characteristic phases which correspond to crystalline impurities were detected. It was displayed that ZnO nanoparticles presented nanowire morphology (NWs), while the metallic silver or platinum were found taking on quasi-spherical nanoparticles morphology (NPs), which appeared well dispersed onto ZnO NWs surface. Regarding particle sizes, ZnO aspect ratios were 2.5–13.3, Ag and Pt diameters were 17.3–24.3 nm and around ≈6.3 nm, respectively. The photocatalytic behavior of the synthesized systems was studied as well by the removing reaction of methylene blue (MB) in water solution. It was verified that the increase of the photocatalytic activity was due to the noble metal presence, exhibiting higher effect of silver than platinum. Photocatalytic results (all samples reached >70% MB elimination) demonstrated the viability of the noble metal/ZnO nanocomposites synthesized by solvothermal method for usage in environmental applications.
