AB - This paper analyses the establishing of the Croatian Orthodox Church (HPC) and the campaign for its internation al recognition. The research is based on rarely used historical documents from collections of the Political Archives of the Ger man Ministry of Foreign Affairs (Berlin) and the Croatian State Archives (Zagreb). The main research subject is analyzed in the context of Nazi policies toward the Orthodox churches in the European South-East, and those have varied from case to case in accordance with Germany’s war goals and properties. The paper also sheds light on the efforts of the Serbian Orthodox Church to prevent the international recognition of the HPC as well as efforts to establish the Hungarian Orthodox Church (a process analogous to the HPC case in many details)

AB - Dragoljub Jovanović was one of a few civic politicians in the Kingdom of
Yugoslavia who collaborated with the communists, p around anti-fascist policies. Still, the relationship between him and the communists was one of distrust.
Jovanovic was a FPRY National Assembly representative between 1945 and 1947.
In the Assembly he spoke against the one-party system, stressing out that his
People’s Farmers Party advocated for peasants, and the CPY (Communist Party
of Yugoslavia) advocated for workers. He supported the formation of farmers’
working collectives, but he was against the state’s strong say in the collectives. He
supported neither one-sided, pro-Soviet Yugoslav foreign policy, nor the wide
scope of authority the new law gave to public attorneys. Because of this, he was
being attacked and insulted by the majority party representatives. The conflict
with the communists around key topics which the new system was based on led
to Jovanović’s expulsion from the Assembly and his arrest.

AB - Dragoljub Jovanović was a very prominent intellectual and political figure
during the first post-war years. He was a symbol of a “fellow traveler in Revolution”. This term had been used by Bolsheviks to describe non-Communist intellectuals who cooperated with the revolutionary regime. Jovanović was “co-opted”
primarly for his political importance, because he had been the leader of the People’s Peasant Party. Western Allies demanded from Yugoslav Cummunists to include “uncompromised” non-Communst politicians and intellectuals in order to
prove the democratic character of their rule. They were just and barely tolerated.
Among these politicians, Jovanović was the most acсeptable one, for his Leftist
peasant ideology, good relations with the Communists before the war, “good behaviour” during the war, etc. Jovanović had hoped for more than being just a “fellow traveler” of the Revolution. Although he and his Party joined the Popular
Front, he tried to preserve autonomy. He was very concerned about the overly
brutal repression of the regime. There were two periods in the short-term cooperation between Jovanović and the Communists. The first one was from liberation (1944) until the first election (end of 1945). The other period encompasses
years 1946 and 1947. During the first period he was a loyal “fellow traveler”. In the
other period he gradually ceased to “travel” together with the Communists. He
criticized the regime more and more openly. His “travel” finally ended in prison.
The new regime, after that, could not stand even mild critical opinions any more.

Combining unpublished archival documents and the literature, this article analyzes military reasons and diplomatic circumstances in which the Serbian Army was deployed to the Chalkidiki and became part of the Allied military forces on the Salonika front. The most important part of this research are details related to the activity of the Serbian Military Mission in the Chalkidiki, which was tasked with making arrangements for receiving, accommodating and supplying the Serbian Army in the peninsula.

AB - Questions of initiative, motives and responsibility for founding of the Croatian Orthodox Church (COC) have been discussed in both Serbian and Croatian historiography for several decades now. Serbian authors tend to see the COC as mere phase of the Ustasha genocide on Serbs or as an instrument for denationalization and assimilation of Serbs in the Independent State of Croatia (ISC). Some Croatian author recognize this stance as just, while others strongly disapprove, insisting that founding of the COC was a positive step toward reconciliation and “normalization” of Serbo-Croatian relations, an instrument for dismantling of “great-Serbian hegemony”. Primary historical sources, of both German and Croatian origin, show that the initiative came from the very top of the Ustasha regime, supported by German institutions and with main goals to prevent further growth of the uprising and to pacify Serbian population.

A Beleaguered Church. The Serbian Orthodox Church in the Independent State of Croatia (NDH) 1941–1945

AB - In the Independent State of Croatia (NDH) from its establishment only days after the German attack on Yugoslavia in early April 1941 until its fall in May 1945 a genocide took place. The ultimate goal of the extreme ideology of the Ustasha regime was a new Croatian state cleansed of other ethnic groups, particularly the Serbs, Jews and Roma. The Serbian Orthodox Church (SPC), historically a mainstay of Serbian national identity, culture and tradition, was among its first targets. Most Serbian Orthodox churches and monasteries were demolished, heavily damaged or appropriated by the Roman Catholic Church or the state. More than 170 Serbian priests were killed and tortured by the Ustasha, and even more were exiled to occupied Serbia. The regime led by Ante Pavelić introduced numerous laws and regulations depriving the SPC of not only its property and spiritual jurisdiction but even of its right to existence. When mass killings stirred up a large-scale rebellion, a more political and seemingly non-violent approach was introduced: the Croatian regime unilaterally and non-canonically founded the so-called Croatian Orthodox Church in order to bring the forced assimilation of Serbs to completion. This paper provides an overview of the ordeal of the Serbian Orthodox Church in the NDH, based on the scholarly literature and documentary sources of Serbian, German and Croatian origin. It looks at legislation, propaganda, the killings and torture of Orthodox clergy and the destruction of church property, including medieval holy relics. The scale and viciousness of some atrocities will be looked at based on unused or less known sources, namely the statements of Serbian refugees recorded during the war by the SPC and the Commissariat for Refugees in Serbia, and documents from the Political Archive of the Third Reich Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

AB - During the turn of the century, the current data of registered fires in Stara planina were insufficient to up date and incomplete, which directly conditioned unintended purpose of prevention and fire protection. With the advent and development of new technologies (remote sensing, GIS, GPS, etc.), since 2010 various data patterns of fire have been collected, recorded, processed and analyzed. Based on the collected and processed data since 2010 preventive measures against fire and better management of natural resources of protected areas have been implemented. The aim of this paper is spatial analysis and mapping of risk zones of fire in Stara planina, consisting of different vegetation cover, the complex structure of the terrain and heterogeneous composition of the soil. In Stara planina, a total of 44505 fires in the open space, in the period from 2010 to 2012, was registered. Cartographic locating, plotting the recorded ''hot spots'' and analyzing topography (aspect, slope, etc) and collected data for this period, the authors identified and zoned endangered belts of Stara planina.

Serbs in Croatia (1918-1929): Between the Myth of 'Greater-Serbian Hegemony' and Social Reality

AB - The situation of the Serbian community in Croatia in the years following the 1918 unification has been analyzed in order to test whether the clichéd view of Croatia and Croats as having been endangered and exploited had any impact on the status of the Serbian community and, if it did, in what way. Although the topic is far from being exhausted in this contribution, the examples given suggest that the two nations in Croatia were deeply divided. The sources studied cast quite a different light on the thesis that Croats were 'oppressed' by Serbs, a thesis that has for quite a long time been passing as a valid historical interpretation in historiography. These sources suggest that the perception of Serbs as hegemony-minded resulted from propaganda rather than from the actual state of affairs. Besides, they show that the Serbs - systematically portrayed to the Croatian public as invaders and enslavers, while, by contrast, they saw themselves as being 'third-rate citizens' - lived their daily lives under strain, surrounded by intolerance, subjected to various forms of pressure and violence, often fearing for their livelihoods, even for their lives. The inexorable logic of facts leads to the conclusion that members of the Serbian community in Croatia felt discriminated against and not quite safe.
