AB - Zirconium carbide ceramics were prepared by carbothermal reduction of ZrO2 and C that were mixed by high-energy ball milling. Powders were milled for times from 0 to 120 min in air. As milling time increased, the surface area of the powders increased, indicating significant particle size reduction. Milled powders were reacted at 1600 °C and then densified by spark plasma sintering at 2000 °C, which was sufficient to convert the starting powders to zirconium carbide. Unmilled powders did not reach full density. Milled powders reached full density, but ZrO2 impurities were found for specimens prepared from powders milled for 60 and 120 min. Microstructure analysis showed that grain size was less than 2 µm for ceramics produced from powder milled for 15 min. Based on densification onset temperature and impurity levels, a milling time of 15 min gives the best balance of particle size reduction to promote densification while minimizing impurity levels.

AB - Recently, many studies have shown various beneficial effects of polyphenol resveratrol (Res) on human health. The most important of these effects include cardioprotective, neuroprotective, anti-cancer, anti-inflammatory, osteoinductive, and anti-microbial effects. Resveratrol has cis and trans isoforms, with the trans isoform being more stable and biologically active. Despite the results of in vitro experiments, resveratrol has limited potential for application in vivo due to its poor water solubility, sensitivity to oxygen, light, and heat, rapid metabolism, and therefore low bioavailability. The possible solution to overcome these limitations could be the synthesis of resveratrol in nanoparticle form. Accordingly, in this study, we have developed a simple, green solvent/non-solvent physicochemical method to synthesize stable, uniform, carrier-free resveratrol nanobelt-like particles (ResNPs) for applications in tissue engineering. UV–visible spectroscopy (UV-Vis) was used to identify the trans isoform of ResNPs which remained stable for at least 63 days. The additional qualitative analysis was performed by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), while X-ray diffraction (XRD) determined the monoclinic structure of resveratrol with a significant difference in the intensity of diffraction peaks between commercial and nano-belt form. The morphology of ResNPs was evaluated by optical microscopy and field-emission scanning electron microscope (FE-SEM) that revealed a uniform nanobelt-like structure with an individual thickness of less than 1 μm. Bioactivity was confirmed using Artemia salina in vivo toxicity assay, while 2,2–diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazylhydrate (DPPH) reduction assay showed the good antioxidative potential of concentrations of 100 μg/ml and lower. Microdilution assay on several reference strains and clinical isolates showed promising antibacterial potential on Staphylococci, with minimal inhibitory concentration (MIC) being 800 μg/ml. Bioactive glass-based scaffolds were coated with ResNPs and characterized to confirm coating potential. All of the above make these particles a promising bioactive, easy-to-handle component in various biomaterial formulations.

AB - An anthocyanin-rich blue maize waste product was used for anthocyanin extraction. To preserve bioactive phenolic compounds, a spray-drying technique was employed using conventional wall material maltodextrin (MD), with novel one, hydroxypropyl-β-cyclodextrin (HPBCD). The obtained spray-dried maize extract (SME) and microencapsulates were analyzed based on physicochemical powder properties, chemical analysis, antioxidant activity, and digestibility. The examined microencapsulates demonstrated good powder properties, exhibited a high powder yield (up to 83%), and had a low moisture content (less than 5%). HPBCD and MD + HPBCD combinations demonstrated superior powder properties in the terms of decreasing the time necessary for rehydration (133.25 and 153.8 s, respectively). The mean average particle diameter ranged from 4.72 to 21.33 µm. DSC analyses signified high powder thermal stability, around 200 °C, related to the increasing preservation with biopolymer addition. The total phenolic and anthocyanin compounds ranged from 30,622 to 32,211 mg CE/kg (CE—catechin equivalents) and from 9642 to 12,182 mg CGE/kg (CGE—cyanidin 3-glucoside equivalents), respectively, associated with good bioactive compound protection. Microencapsulates with both carriers (15% MD and 15% HPBCD) had the highest digestibility (73.63%). Our results indicated that the microencapsulates created with the active ingredient and the wall materials (MD and HPBCD) could protect phenolic compounds/anthocyanins against ABTS radicals (63.53 and 62.47 mmol Trolox Eq/kg, respectively).

AB - In this study, we report the influence of vanadium oxide (VO), as a photosensitive component, on the photoactivity of TiO2 nanotubes (TNTs). A series of TNTs of varying tube diameter were synthesized by the anodization of titanium foils at different voltages, while vanadium oxide was deposited on TNTs by wet chemical deposition. An improvement in the optical properties of nanotubes was observed after the deposition of vanadium oxide. An improvement in the optical properties (redshift in UV-Vis spectra) of TNTs and TNT/VO was noted. The photocatalytic activity was improved with increasing tube diameter, while it was weakened after the deposition of VO. Furthermore, photoactivity was investigated in photodiodes based on TNTs or TNT/VO and single crystals of CH3NH3PbI3. The photoelectric measurement revealed that different TNT diameters did not influence the I-V characteristic of the photodiodes, while the deposition of VO improved the photocurrent for smaller TNTs.

AB - Primary seawater magnesium-based cell with AgCl or PbCl2 cathodes is widely used as power sources. In this paper, we consider the cyclic galvanostatic formation of silver and lead chlorides and their electrochemical behavior for potential applications in the new concept of the seawater quasi-rechargeable magnesium cell. For potential cells, the voltage for Mg alloy AZ63 and AgCl is ~ 1.5 V, and for the PbCl2, ~ 1 V. High discharge specific capacity, energy, and power are obtained under the very high discharge rate. It is also presented that systems could be potentially used in emergency situations for a few days up to a few weeks as a power source in the life-saving boat for sporadic emitting GPS-SOS tacking signals and night signal lights.

AB - In this investigation, samples of SrGd2O4 doped with different Yb3+ (2, 4, 6 at.%) ions and constant Ho3+ (1 at.%) and Bi3+ (2 at.%) concentrations were prepared. The sol-gel method with glycine as a fuel and citric acid as a chelator was chosen for sample preparation. All samples were heated in the furnace for 1.5 h at 500 °C and then thermally treated for 2.5 h at 1000 °C. The pure orthorhombic lattice of SrGd2O4, space group Pnma, was revealed by X-ray diffraction (XRD) (JCPDS Card No.:01-072-6387). Transmission electron microscopy (TEM) discovered agglomerated clusters of spherical particles measuring around 150 nm in size. Including Bi3+ ions into the structure influenced the morphology of the sample showing fine packing of pyramidal-shaped nanoparticles. The uniform distribution of constitutive elements in the samples was confirmed by energy dispersive spectroscopy (EDS). Up-conversion emission properties were evaluated from photoluminescent emission spectra and intensity dependence on excitation power after excitation at 976 nm. Dominant green (550 nm), red (671 nm), and infrared (758 nm) 5F4, 5S2 → 5I8, 5F5 → 5I8, 5F4, 5S2 → 5I7 transition emissions, respectively, are detected in all samples. The sample co-doped with Bi3+ showed the most intense photoluminescent emission.

AB - The aim of this research was to investigate for the first-time photocatalytic degradation of methylene blue over SrGd2O4 powders co-doped with constant Er3+ (0.5 at.%) and different Yb3+ (1, 2.5 and 5 at.%) concentrations. Samples were successfully prepared via sol-gel assisted combustion method. They exhibit photoluminescence properties which are manifested as red emission at 661 nm (4F9/2 → 4I15/2) and two green emissions at 551 and 523 nm (4S3/2 → 4I15/2 and 2H11/2 → 4I15/2). X-ray Powder Diffraction pattern proved that all samples crystallize as a pure orthorhombic phase. Scanning electron microscopy was used for morphology characterization and it revealed the existence of porous agglomerated round-shaped particles. Energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy showed the presence of dopant ions and even distribution of all constituting elements. To calculate the energy band gap, UV-VIS diffuse reflectance spectroscopy was performed and a value of 4.3 eV was obtained, as well as the four additional values from the bands at lower energies. Photocatalytic degradation of methylene blue was monitored using UV-VIS absorption spectroscopy. Obtained results were promising since after 4 h of exposure to the simulating Sun irradiation, more than 50% of the starting dye concentration was mineralized.

Rietveld refinement indicated unit cell lattice parameters increase with Yb3+ and Er3+ ions doping. Scanning transmission electron microscopy with corresponding energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy revealed that obtained powders are composed of agglomerated nanoparticles that have a uniform distribution of all constituting elements. Photoluminescence measurements implied intensification of the up-conversion (UC) emission in the visible part of spectrum with the increase of Yb3+ content, which is followed by a significant change in the green to red ratio. Two-photon UC processes are established as a result of Er3+ f-f electronic transitions: green emission at 523 and 551 nm (2H11/2, 4S3/2 → 4I15/2) as well as a red emission at 661 nm (4F9/2 → 4I15/2). The highest value of absolute quantum yield of 0.055% is determined for SrGd2O4 nanoparticles doped with 0.5 at% of Er3+ and co-doped with 5 at% of Yb3+ (λexc = 976 nm, power density 200 W/cm2).

AB - Magnesium aluminate has the spinel structure along with good mechanical, chemical, and thermal properties. Magnesium aluminate has a wide range of applications including refractory ceramics, optically transparent ceramic windows, and armors. Its low dielectric permeability and low loss tangent enable its applications for integrated electronic devices, as well. In this paper, MgO and Al2O3 powders were mixed in a one-to-one molar ratio and calcined at temperatures ranging from 1500 to 1800°C to produce phase pure spinel. Thereafter, pellets were crushed and treated in a planetary ball mill for 60 min to obtain a fine powder. All powders were examined for phase composition, crystal structure, and morphology. The obtained results showed that by increasing the temperature, samples with higher density were synthesized. Milling for 1 h led to formation of larger particles, but finer powders after milling. XRPD and Raman spectroscopy showed disorder in the crystal structure after milling.

AB - The demand for affordable and accessible catalysts to replace the expensive and scarce resourced platinum group metals (PGMs) has become increasingly vital. Since they combine different properties such as electrochemical activities, chemical and photochemical stability, non-toxicity, etc. ZnO-based materials have been examined for potential applications in electronics, optoelectronics, sensing in environmental applications as well as catalysis. This study focused on cost reduction of PGM materials by introducing RuO2 as a substitute for Ru and decreasing the amount of RuO2 through the incorporation of abundant and versatile ZnO. A composite of ZnO/RuO2 in a 10:1 molar ratio was synthesized using a microwave processing of a prepcipitate. To enhance its catalytic properties, the composite was subsequently annealed at 300 and 600 C. The physicochemical characteristics of the ZnO/RuO2 composites were analyzed using X-ray powder diffraction (XRD), Raman and Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy, field emission scanning electron microscopy (FESEM), UV-Vis diffuse reflectance spectroscopy (DRS), and photoluminescence (PL) spectroscopy. Furthermore, the electrochemical activity of the samples was assessed through linear sweep voltammetry in both acidic (0.1 M H2SO4) and alkaline (0.1 M NaOH) electrolytes. Remarkably, the ZnO/RuO2 composites exhibited excellent bifunctional catalytic activity for hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) and oxygen evolution reaction (OER) in both types of electrolytes.

AB - The release of pharmaceuticals in the environment represents a significant ecological problem due to their complex structure making them challenge to be decomposed and removed by standard waste-water treatment processes. Zinc oxide (ZnO) represents a semiconductor compound with exceptional optical and electrochemical properties, chemical and photochemical stability, nontoxicity, biocompatibility, etc. Due to their adjustable multifunctional properties, ZnO based materials have concerned general scientific and technological attention. Nowadays these materials are used for a range of applications in electronics, opto-electronics, biosensing, bioimaging, drug delivery, antimicrobial and anticancer agents, implants as well as sensing in environmental applications. The main object of this study was to improve efficiency of ZnO particles toward electrochemical sensing of water pollutants and electrocatalysis. In order to modify electrochemical properties, zinc oxide/graphene oxide (ZnO/GO) composites with different ZnO:GO weights ratio were prepared using a microwave (MW) assisted synthesis of precipitate. Two different amounts of GO (0.1 and 0.5 wt.%) were dispersed in 100 mL of distilled water. After stirring for 5 min an appropriate amount of ZnCl2 was added to the GO water dispersion. Subsequently, 20 mL of 1.75 M NaOH was added dropwise to the mixture with constant stirring. After being stirred at 50 C for 90 min in total, the as-prepared precipitate was microwave processed in a MW oven (2.45 GHz, 130 W) for 5 min. After cooling to room temperature, the precipitate was centrifuged and rinsed to remove the surface residues of the starting chemical solutions. The synthesized powder was dried in an oven at 80 C for 24 h. The particles crystal structure and phase composition were investigated by X-ray diffraction and Raman spectroscopy. The particles morphology was determined with FE–SEM. The optical properties were studied using UV–Vis DRS and PL spectroscopy. The electrochemical sensing activity of ZnO and ZnO/GO electrodes was tested for detection of chloramphenicol water solution whereas electrocatalytic activity was tested for water splitting when samples were used as anode materials and evaluated by linear sweep voltammetry in 0.1M NaOH and 0.1 M H2SO4 electrolytes. ZnO/GO electrodes were tested as-prepared and after in situ reduction of GO at -1.4 V vs. SCE in 0.1 M KCl. Electrochemical activity of prepared composites was correlated with the presence of GO and reduced GO particles.

AB - Catalytic materials are the greatest challenge for the commercial application of water electrolysis (WEs) and fuel cells (FCs) as clean energy technologies. There is a need to find an alternative to expensive and unavailable platinum group metal (PGM) catalysts. This study aimed to reduce the cost of PGM materials by replacing Ru with RuO2 and lowering the amount of RuO2 by adding abundant and multifunctional ZnO. A ZnO@RuO2 composite in a 10:1 molar ratio was synthesized by microwave processing of a precipitate as a green, low-cost, and fast method, and then annealed at 300°C and 600°C to improve the catalytic properties. The physicochemical properties of the ZnO@RuO2 composites were investigated by X-ray powder diffraction (XRD), Raman and Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy, field emission scanning electron microscopy (FESEM), UV-Vis diffuse reflectance spectroscopy (DRS), and photoluminescence (PL) spectroscopy. The electrochemical activity of the samples was investigated by linear sweep voltammetry in acidic and alkaline electrolytes. We observed good bifunctional catalytic activity of the ZnO@RuO2 composites toward HER and OER in both electrolytes. The improved bifunctional catalytic activity of the ZnO@RuO2 composite by annealing was discussed and attributed to the reduced number of bulk oxygen vacancies and the increased number of established heterojunctions.

The improved bifunctional catalytic activity of the ZnO@RuO2 composite by annealing was discussed and attributed to the reduced number of bulk oxygen vacancies and the increased number of established heterojunctions.",

AB - Novel hybrid core-shell structures, in which up-converting (UC) NaYF4:Yb,Tm core converts near-infrared (NIR) to visible (Vis) light via multiphoton up-conversion processes, while anatase TiO2-acetylacetonate (TiO2-Acac) shell ensures absorption of the Vis light through direct injection of excited electrons from the highest-occupied-molecular-orbital (HOMO) of Acac into the TiO2 conduction band (CB), were successfully synthesized by a two-step wet chemical route. Synthesized NaYF4:Yb,Tm@TiO2-Acac powders were characterized by X-ray powder diffraction, thermogravimetric analysis, scanning and transmission electron microscopy, diffuse-reflectance spectroscopy, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, and photoluminescence emission measurement. Tetracycline, as a model drug, was used to investigate the photocatalytic efficiencies of the core-shell structures under irradiation of reduced power Vis and NIR spectra. It was shown that the removal of tetracycline is accompanied by the formation of intermediates, which formed immediately after bringing the drug into contact with the novel hybrid core-shell structures. As a result, ~80% of tetracycline is removed from the solution after 6 h.

AB - The maximization of the number of exposed edges of layered MoS2-type transition metal dichalcogenides of general formula MX2 (M = Mo, W; X = S, Se) is difficult yet meaningful way to improve their electrochemical and electrocatalytic performance. In this work, an all-solid ball milling method for simultaneous introduction of defects and their hybridization through binding of ammonia borane (NH3BH3) to defect sites of MX2 is demonstrated. The milling conditions leads to partial separation and nanosizing of MX2 layers, simultaneously extensively introducing defects (cracks, vacancies, strains, voids etc.), while the detailed analysis revealed the functionalization of the material by binding of NH3BH3 to defect sites, which results in highly improved electrocatalytic performance of thus obtained composites with respect to MX2 for hydrogen evolution reaction. The mechanochemical approach thus enables preparation of MoS2-type materials with improved, highly tunable activity, potentially relevant for energy conversion and storage.

AB - Novel cotton-based TiO2/Ag/TiO2 nanocomposites for wastewater treatment were developed by fine chemical synthesis path with the goal of coping with wastewater issues and environmental remediation. The photocatalytic performances of nanocomposites were tested during photodegradation processes of RB, AO7 and MR under simulated solar light. Double- and single-loaded nanocomposites were synthesized by a simple bottom-up approach implying in situ photoreduction of Ag+ ions on the surface of TiO2 NPs previously deposited on cotton fibers from colloids. The spherical-like colloidal TiO2 NPs (4.5 nm) and TiO2/Ag NPs (8 nm) and the formation of uniform TiO2/Ag and TiO2/Ag/TiO2 nano-coatings on cotton fibers were examined by TEM and FESEM. The reduction of Ag+ ions on TiO2 surface was undoubtedly proven by the appearance of SPR band of Ag NPs in UV/Vis spectra. Raman spectroscopy clearly confirmed the presence of anatase TiO2 in nanocomposites. Quantitative determination of TiO2 and Ag in nanocomposites was accomplished using EDX and ICP–OES. The cotton-based TiO2/Ag/TiO2 nanocomposite showed the highest photocatalytic efficiency (> 90%) and maintained its removal efficiency after three reuse cycles, indicated its exceptional photochemical ability. The initial idea of improved photocatalytic performances of a TiO2 NPs double-layer with immobilized Ag NPs was justified as the TiO2/Ag/TiO2 processed sample contributed additional binding sites for dye molecules. Considering that the photocatalytic activity of the cotton-based TiO2 and TiO2/Ag samples was practically imperceptible, it can be assumed that the synthesized Ag NPs act predominantly as electron traps in the double-loaded synthesized system.

AB - The aim of this work is in situ anodization/anaphoretic deposition of a nano amorphous calcium phosphate (ACP)/chitosan oligosaccharide lactate (ChOL) multifunctional hybrid coating decorated with selenium (Se) on a titanium substrate and in vivo investigation of its immunomodulatory and anti-inflammatory effect. Investigating phenomena at the implant–tissue interface of interest for controlled inflammation and immunomodulation was also the aim of the research. In our earlier research, we designed coatings based on ACP and ChOL on titanium with anticorrosive, antibacterial and biocompatible properties, while in the presented results we show that selenium addition makes this coating an immunomodulator. The immunomodulatory effect of the novel hybrid coating is characterized by the examination of the functional aspects in the tissue around the implant (in vivo): proinflammatory cytokines’ gene expression, M1 (iNOS) and M2 (Arg1) macrophages, fibrous capsule formation (TGF-β) and vascularization (VEGF). The EDS, FTIR and XRD analyses prove the formation of a ACP/ChOL/Se multifunctional hybrid coating on Ti and the presence of Se. A higher M2/M1 macrophage ratio in the ACP/ChOL/Se-coated implants compared to pure titanium implants (a higher level of Arg1 expression) is noted at all time points examined (after 7, 14 and 28 days). Lower inflammation measured by gene expression of proinflammatory cytokines IL-1β and TNF, lower expression of TGF-β in the surrounding tissue and higher IL-6 expression (solely at day 7 post-implantation) is noted in presence of the ACP/ChOL/Se-coated implants.

abstract = "The aim of this work is in situ anodization/anaphoretic deposition of a nano amorphous calcium phosphate (ACP)/chitosan oligosaccharide lactate (ChOL) multifunctional hybrid coating decorated with selenium (Se) on a titanium substrate and in vivo investigation of its immunomodulatory and anti-inflammatory effect. AB - In this paper, we present a class of integer codes capable of correcting l-bit burst errors within one b-bit byte and h-bit burst errors within two b-bit bytes (1 ≤ h < l < b). The presented codes are constructed with the help of a computer and have the potential to be used in various optical networks. To evaluate the performance of the proposed codes, we analyze the probability of incorrect decoding for different error rates. In addition, the paper shows that the presented codes are suitable for software implementation and that can be easily transformed into codes capable of correcting double burst errors.

AB - One of the most important characteristics of all error control codes (ECCs) is the complexity of the encoding/decoding algorithms. Today, there are many ECCs that can correct multiple bit errors, but at the price of high encoding/decoding complexity. Among the rare exceptions are integer ECCs (IECCs), whose serial encoding/decoding algorithms run in O(n) time, where n is the codeword length. In this article, we show that IECCs can be encoded/decoded even faster, that is, that their parallel encoding/decoding algorithms have O(log2n) time complexity.

AB - Iron(III) titanates are attracting rapidly growing interest as very promising candidates for applications in solar energy and optoelectronics because they contain earth-rich elements. Potentially, Fe2TiO5 is a thermoelectric material. We used a Vibrating Sample Magnetometer and Superconducting Quantum Interferometer Device Magnetometer to study the magnetic properties of the pseudobrookite material Fe2TiO5. The material was synthesized by the sol-gel method. The structural parameters of the synthesized samples were investigated by X-ray analysis. The diffractogram was refined with the help of Rietveld refinement on FullProf Suite. Temperature-dependent ZFC and FC magnetization was measured on SQUID for lower temperature down to 2 K and on VSM for higher temperatures up to 1000 K. A transition was observed at 815 K with a separation between the ZFC and FC curves. Parallelly the bifurcation in the isothermal hysteresis measurements indicates that the system exhibits dominant canted AFM (or weak FM) with a small amount of spin glass. The small value of the moment was also pointing towards the canted AFM ordering. The size and morphology of the particles was determined using transmission electron microscopy (TEM) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM).
