“Converted Co-Ethnics”: Romanian Migrants in the Northern Serbian Province of Vojvodina

AB  - In this paper, my case study highlights Romanian neo-Protestant migrants from Serbia who either returned to their “home country,” or work on different missionary activities among their co-ethnics after the fall of communism. To a large degree, members of the Romanian minority in Serbia belong to the Romanian Orthodox Church, which is the dominant confession, then a smaller number to the Romanian Greek-Catholic church and various neo-Protestant communities, such as the Nazarene, the Adventist, the Baptist, and the Pentecostal community. Starting from the hypothesis that the conversion of the Romanians in Serbia to neo-Protestantism is closely related to issues of migration, whether the conversion occurred while living abroad or they were, for religious reasons, forced to leave the country, the focus of this paper is transformation of social relations among converted Romanians and their co-ethnics. Based on the results from ethnographic research conducted in Serbia in 2014–2015, I will focus on how migrants perceive themselves and their co-ethnic attitudes towards them. Becoming a part of transnational religious community and emphasizing supra-nationality, the Romanian neo-Protestants perceive themselves as a part of “worldwide brotherhood,” adopting some new forms of collective identity while distancing themselves from the Romanian Orthodox tradition. Thus, religious otherness raises questions of the attitude of the Romanian local community towards the Romanian neo-Protestant migrants and their new religious, cultural, and social practices.

AB  - У овом тексту изложићемо наративе представника верских хуманитарних
организација које су активне при Српској православној цркви, Римокатоличкој цркви
и Хришћанској адвентистичкој цркви. Наративи дају опис активности ових
организација у вези са едукацијом миграната у Србији после 2016. године када – након
затварања формализованог миграцијског коридора и секуритарног заокрета
миграцијске политике – програми интеграције миграната добијају превагу над онима
који се фокусирају на ургентни прихват. Грађа је добијена полуструктурираним
интервјуима и биће подељена у два дела – активности верских хуманитарних
организација у образовању деце основношколског узраста, као и активности верских
хуманитарних организација у образовању средњошколаца и одраслих.
AB  - In this paper we will present narratives of the representatives of faith-based humanitarian
organizations of the Serbian Orthodox Church, the Roman Catholic Church and the Seventh
Day Adventist Church. The narratives provide description of the activities of these
organizations regarding education of migrants in Serbia when, from the year 2016 – after the closure of the formalized migration corridor and new securitarian turn of the migration
policy – migrants’ integration programs took primacy over those focused on urgent
reception. The material has been obtained through semi-structured interviews and will be
presented in two sections, the activities of the faith-based organizations in relation to the
elementary school education, as well as the activities related to high-school education and
education of the adults.

AB  - Research on the position of women in the Eastern Orthodox churches is still scarce. Some recent studies show differences among the various Orthodox Churches in Eastern Europe regarding
women’s issues. The position of the women in the Serbian Orthodox Church (SOC) was addressed as late as in the 1990s, but this is still an insufficiently examined field. Eastern Orthodox theologians have rarely discussed the problem of the  position and role of women in the SOC. During the socialist era, they did not engage this topic, except in studies related to female monasticism. On the other hand, sociological and anthropological studies have only recently started to include the topic of women in religion and in the church in their research on religiosity in Serbia. However, serious empirical research is still insufficient.The aim of this contribution is to outline the position of women in Orthodox Christianity, to discuss the attitude of the SOC towards this issue and to summarize the changes related to it in the last 100 years

AB  - Човекова природна средина јесте историјски феномен, који, као не-
сумњиви, основни и трајни фактор бивствовања, није непроменљив. Пос-
матране из глобалне и историјске перспективе, промене које настају услед
деловања природних појава и сила најчешће се манифестују повремено и
на релативно мањем простору без обзира да ли се ради о дуготрајним про-
цесима или о кратким али катастрофалним појавним облицима. Промене
које човек узрокује и производи свесним деловањем, у мањим временским
исечцима не производе веће последице али, дугорочно посматрано, његове
активности на промени простора (природног окружења) све више узрокују
трајне промене. У историјској перспективи човек је на (микро)простор по-
чео да утиче онда када је почео да прави прве насеобине а, у ширем смислу,
онда када почиње да гради саобраћајнице, дуге одбрамбене зидине, аква-
дукте, мостове, бране, канале и друге грађевине које нису настајале само
из елементарних животних потреба. Мењајући природу човек је долазио у
ситуацију да се сукобљава са њом самом и са последицама својих делатнос-
ти. Истовремено, што су његова дела бивала већа она су све више постајала
део те природе.

Autoritet i kako ga steći: Pausanija, Opis Helade i arheološka iskopavanja u Olimpiji

AB  - Teren i tekst, naročito na polju klasične arheologije, uvek su u dijalektičkom
odnosu: terenska praksa i tekstovi (kako oni koji prethode, tako i oni koji proističu
iz iskopavanja) se međusobno prožimaju, potvrđuju i preoblikuju. Stoga, osim ključnih
ličnosti ili institucija i tekstovi mogu imati autoritet koji se vremenom stiče, potvrđuje
ili pak gubi. Pausanijin Opis Helade jedno je od dela koje je upisano u disciplinarne
temelje klasične arheologije. Ovo delo uticalo je na pravce istaživanja na polju klasične
arheologije Grčke, njihov obim i metodologiju, kao i konačnu interpretaciju. O uzajamnom
prožimanju arheologije i Pausanijinog Opisa Helade najbolje govore iskopavanja
u Olimpiji, koja su u ovome radu uzeta kao studija slučaja. S jedne strane, iz višegodišnjih
temeljnih istraživanja, kojima je prethodila višedecenijska diplomatska borba
za dozvolu za iskopavanja, proisteklo je bolje razumevanje Pausanijinog dela, dok je s
druge, preoblikovana ne samo terenska praksa, nego i epistemološke osnove klasične
arheologije. Cilj ovoga rada jeste da još jednom podseti na neodvojivost praktičnog i
interpretativnog, odnosno na neodvojivost terenskog i kabinetskog rada u arheologiji.
AB  - One of the key products of archaeological work, the clear disciplinary distinction
separating it from amateur curiosity or lucrative treasure hunt, is the
text. Not only it stands at the end of almost every archaeological endeavour,
text in its various forms often presents the source of fieldwork: archaeological
excavations are preceded by (repeated) reading of previously written landscape,
either represented through old travelogues, or through recent reports from archaeological
surveys. In short, fieldwork and text are dialectically linked: fieldwork
practice and texts mutually intertwine, confirm and (re)shape one another.
Therefore, along with “founding fathers” of the discipline, some texts may also
posses authority – achieved over time, confirmed, or lost.
Opposed to the authors and works of the classical canon, Pausanias and his
Description of Greece were not of noble origins, that would secure the position
of indisputable authority in the field of classical archaeology. Therefore
the reputation of the author and his work was built – through confirmations and
refutations – in the very landscape of Greece, primarily through archaeological
fieldwork. During the 19th century Description of Greece served as a kind of
travel guide for researchers to the long-abandoned sites and grand archaeological
discoveries, such as Schliemann in Mycenae. The Erechteion in Athens is
today known by the name given to the temple by Pausanias. His authority, built in the field of classical archaeology, spread out of the domain of the discipline:
on the grounds of the data from the Description of Greece and the esteem of
its author, the administration of the new independent Greek kingdom started
changing the Slovene, Albanian, Turkish or Italian toponyms in its territory. The
excavations at Olympia – the case-study presented here, speak most eloquently
about the mutual intertwining of archaeology and Description of Greece. On the
one side, the years-long excavations, enabled by the decades-long diplomatic
struggle for the licence, deepened the understanding of the work of Pausanias,
but on the other side, the fieldwork practice has also changed, as well as the
epistemological foundations of classical archaeology. The aim of this paper is to
point once more to the inseparable ties linking practical and interpretive aspects,
i.e. fieldwork and study in archaeology.

u Olimpiji, koja su u ovome radu uzeta kao studija slučaja. S jedne strane, iz višegodišnjih
temeljnih istraživanja, kojima je prethodila višedecenijska diplomatska borba
za dozvolu za iskopavanja, proisteklo je bolje razumevanje Pausanijinog dela, dok je s
druge, preoblikovana ne samo terenska praksa, nego i epistemološke osnove klasične
arheologije. Cilj ovoga rada jeste da još jednom podseti na neodvojivost praktičnog i
interpretativnog, odnosno na neodvojivost terenskog i kabinetskog rada u arheologiji., One of the key products of archaeological work, the clear disciplinary distinction
separating it from amateur curiosity or lucrative treasure hunt, is the
text. Not only it stands at the end of almost every archaeological endeavour,
text in its various forms often presents the source of fieldwork: archaeological
excavations are preceded by (repeated) reading of previously written landscape,
either represented through old travelogues, or through recent reports from archaeological
surveys. In short, fieldwork and text are dialectically linked: fieldwork
practice and texts mutually intertwine, confirm and (re)shape one another.
Therefore, along with “founding fathers” of the discipline, some texts may also
posses authority – achieved over time, confirmed, or lost.
Opposed to the authors and works of the classical canon, Pausanias and his
Description of Greece were not of noble origins, that would secure the position
of indisputable authority in the field of classical archaeology. Therefore
the reputation of the author and his work was built – through confirmations and
refutations – in the very landscape of Greece, primarily through archaeological
fieldwork. During the 19th century Description of Greece served as a kind of
travel guide for researchers to the long-abandoned sites and grand archaeological
discoveries, such as Schliemann in Mycenae. The Erechteion in Athens is
today known by the name given to the temple by Pausanias. His authority, built in the field of classical archaeology, spread out of the domain of the discipline:
on the grounds of the data from the Description of Greece and the esteem of
its author, the administration of the new independent Greek kingdom started
changing the Slovene, Albanian, Turkish or Italian toponyms in its territory. The
excavations at Olympia – the case-study presented here, speak most eloquently
about the mutual intertwining of archaeology and Description of Greece. On the
one side, the years-long excavations, enabled by the decades-long diplomatic
struggle for the licence, deepened the understanding of the work of Pausanias,
but on the other side, the fieldwork practice has also changed, as well as the
epistemological foundations of classical archaeology. The aim of this paper is to
point once more to the inseparable ties linking practical and interpretive aspects,
i.e. fieldwork and study in archaeology.",

AB  - Cilj ovog rada je prikazivanje nekih manje poznatih detalja iz
života velikog banatskog slikara Nikolaja Popeskua (Nicolae Popescu, 1835-
1877), na osnovu do sada neobjavljene arhivske građe i savremenih
novinskih članaka koji do sada nisu korišćeni u monografijama i studijama
koje su posvećene ovom umetniku. U neku ruku tragična ličnost istorije
banatske umetnosti XIX veka, iako akademski slikar, Popesku se ceo svoj
život borio sa problemima koji su bili posledica društvenih suprotnosti
prisutnih u austrougarskom društvu druge polovine XIX veka, a pre svega
odnosa tog društva prema umetnosti, cenjene i prihvaćene, ali ipak ne u
dovoljnoj meri da bi obezbedila siguran i lagodan život svima koji je
praktikuju. Glavnu pažnju smo usmerili na boravak i umetnički rad ovog
slikara na prostorima današnje Vojvodine (srpski Banat), pre svega na
njegov boravak u Vršcu i na oslikavanje rumunske pravoslavne crkve u
Seleušu, koje predstavlja jedno od remek-dela crkvenog slikarstva na našim
prostorima u XIX veku.

AB  - The number of religious minorities from Central and Eastern Europe prone to migration to the English-speaking world increased considerably during the nineteenth and twentieth centuries. Among them were the Evangelical Baptists, or Neutäufer, founded by a former Reformed minister, Samuel Fröhlich, around 1830 in Switzerland. Reviving some of the old Mennonite principles, this newly emerging religious community was emphasizing nonresistance, a refusal of taking oaths, the rejection of infant baptism, and separation from the world. Their expansion to Southeastern Europe in the late nineteenth century attracted new members from various ethnic groups. Because of state oppression and religious persecution, the Nazarenes from Yugoslavia started to immigrate to North America. There, they joined the Apostolic Christian Church, which was the official name of the Nazarene community in the United States and Canada. The material collected for this article is the result of empirical research conducted in Serbia and the United States on the history of the Nazarene migration to North America after the Second World War. The geographical focus of my research is the area of Akron and Mansfield, Ohio, which received the most Nazarene immigrants from Yugoslavia. Based on qualitative interviews with community members and archival research (Virginia Historical Society Archives), this paper addresses several questions: what the migration waves of the Nazarenes were, how the Nazarenes integrated into the new society, and how this religious community transformed in the English- speaking world. materijalnih tragova prošlosti na prostorima Zapadnog Balkana. Monumentalnost stećaka,
njihova brojnost, a neretko i istaknuto mesto u lokalnom pejzažu uticali su i utiču na
to da sve do današnjih dana privlače pažnju lokalnog stanovništva, kao i stranih putnika,
a od druge polovine 19. veka stećci postaju predmet interesovanja naučnika. Drugim rečima,
u poslednja dva veka stećci su bivali, odnosno bivaju proizvođeni u nasleđe. Kroz
nekoliko paradigmatičnih primera, u ovom radu biće skrenuta pažnja na interpretativnu
„neuhvatljivost“ stećaka, odnosno na to kako stećci, zahvaljujući svojoj materijalnosti i
estetici, kao i brojnosti i prostornoj rasprostranjenosti neprestano podstiču interpretacije
te kako, neretko paralelno, utiču i na uspostavljanje, ali i na prevazilaženje granica, bilo
da su one nacionalne, kulturne, verske i druge.

AB  - Stećci, srednjovekovni nadgrobni spomenici, jedan su od najosobenijih materijalnih tragova prošlosti na prostorima Zapadnog Balkana. Monumentalnost stećaka, njihova brojnost, a neretko i istaknuto mesto u lokalnom pejzažu uticali su i utiču na to da sve do današnjih dana privlače pažnju lokalnog stanovništva, kao i stranih putnika, a od druge polovine 19. veka stećci postaju predmet interesovanja naučnika. Drugim rečima, u poslednja dva veka stećci su bivali, odnosno bivaju proizvođeni u nasleđe. Kroz nekoliko paradigmatičnih primera, u ovom radu biće skrenuta pažnja na interpretativnu „neuhvatljivost“ stećaka, odnosno na to kako stećci, zahvaljujući svojoj materijalnosti i estetici, kao i brojnosti i prostornoj rasprostranjenosti neprestano podstiču interpretacije te kako, neretko paralelno, utiču i na uspostavljanje, ali i na prevazilaženje granica, bilo da su one nacionalne, kulturne, verske i druge.
AB  - Stećci, the monumental mediaeval tombstones, are one of the most characteristic traces of the past in the region of the Western Balkans. Their monumentality, frequency and the prominent place in the local landscape have influenced that, apart from the significance for the local population, they have attracted the attention of foreign travellers, and from the second half of the 19th century they have become the object of scientific interest. In this manner, over the last two
centuries, stećci have been promoted into heritage. Illustrated by three paradigmatic examples, the paper points to the “elusiveness” of stećci, i.e. to the fact that they engender various interpretations, due to their materiality and aesthetics, but to their frequency and spatial distribution as well. At the same time, they influence the establishment and abolishment of frontiers – national, cultural, religious and other.
AB  - Stećci, pierres tombales médiévales, présentent l’une des traces matérielles du passé les plus spécifiques sur le territoire des Balkans occidentaux. Depuis leur apparition jusqu’à nos jours, à part l’importance pour la population locale, stećci attirent l’attention des voyageurs étrangers par leur monumentalité, leur nombre et souvent par leur position marquée dans le paysage local, tandis qu’à partir de la deuxième moitié du 19e siècle ils commencent à intéresser les scientifiques. Les deux derniers siècles, stećci étaient et sont ainsi promus au rang du patrimoine. En s’appuyant sur trois exemples paradigmatiques, le présent travail porte attention sur « l’insaisissabilité » interprétative des stećci, en d’autres termes, sur la manière dont stećci, grâce à leur matérialité et leur esthétique ainsi qu’à leur nombre et leur distribution spatiale, incitent continuellement les interprétations diverses et influencent, souvent en parallèle, la constitution, mais aussi le dépassement des frontières qu’elles soient nationales, culturelles, religieuses ou autres.

AB  - Живот Л. Ф. Марсиљија, војника, дипломате, учењака, нераскидиво је везан за просторе средњег Подунавља. Као учесник Бечког рата (1683–1699) и као царски комесар за утврђивање границе након Карловачког мира гроф Марсиљи је и непосредно учествовао у повлачењу граница Балкана. Упоредо с ратним недаћама, подстакнут личним интересовањима, али и уз подршку аустријске војске, гроф Марсиљи дао се у проучавање ових предела, проучавање које је крунисано објављивањем монументалне студије – Danubius Pannonico-Mysicus. Други од укупно шест томова Марсиљијевог ремек-дела јесте систематичан преглед римске материјалне културе дуж дунавских обала, како сам аутор каже, Паноније и Мезије. Од друге половине, XIX века, када археологија у Србији почиње да стиче своје дисциплинарне обрисе, други, антикварски том Данубијуса био је први степеник на који су се ослањали истраживачи балканске прошлости. Књига На границама Балкана, кроз осврте на политичке, учењачке, културне, или најшире, друштвене контексте, говори о двема рецепцијама – Марсиљијевој рецепцији римске баштине Балкана те потоњој рецепцији Марсиљијевог дела у српској археологији.

AB  - The migration of religious minorities from the region of Southeast Europe to North America was not in the focus of ethno-anthropological, sociological and historiographical research until recently. In the last two decades, the main focus in migration studies was on labor and economic migration, and only indirectly to the religious identity of migrants. This paper discusses the migration of one neo-Protestant religious minority - the Nazarenes, who emigrated massively from Yugoslavia to North America after the Second World War. The Nazarenes were pacifists, refusing to bear arms, take an oath, or to be members of political organizations. By adhering to their strict religious beliefs, the Nazarenes came into conflict with the state authorities. After the Second World War, the communist state considered Nazarenes as disloyal citizens and a threat to the government. From 1949, the Nazarenes were condemned to severe prison sentences in the worst prisons such as Goli otok. In this period, the illegal emigration of Nazarenes to North America started. The material collected for the purposes of this paper came to be the result of empirical research, conducted in the United States (March-June 2015) with members of the Nazarene community who emigrated from Yugoslavia between 1950 and 1975. Emphasizing the role of religion in the process of migration, as well as the transformation of the community after several decades in their new setting, this paper analyzes the oral history of emigration of the Nazarenes during communism, where emigration is seen as 'survival strategy' for this religious minority. AB  - Миграције верских мањина са простора југоисточне Европе у Северну Америку нису биле у фокусу етнолошких, антрополошких, социолошких и историографских истраживања. Током последњих деценија, главни акценат у миграцијским студијама стављан је на радне и економске миграције, а само индиректно на религијски идентитет емиграната. У овом раду разматра се миграција припадника верске мањине назарена из Југославије у Северну Америку након Другог светског рата. Назарени су, као пацифисти, одбијали да носе оружје, полажу заклетву или буду чланови политичких организација. Придржавајући се доследно својих верских уверења, долазили су у сукоб са властима. Од 1949. године, комунистичке власти су их осуђивале на вишегодишње затворске казне, укључујући и затвор на Голом oтоку. Тада почиње и илегална емиграција назарена у Северну Америку, која је трајала све до 1965. године. Овај рад заснива се на теренском истраживању обављеном у Сједињеним Америчким Државама у Охају (март–јун 2015) са припадницима назаренске заједнице који су емигрирали из Југославије. Указујући на улогу религије у процесу миграција, као и на трансформацију ове верске заједнице након неколико деценија на простору Америке, у раду се анализирају усмени наративи о исељењу назарена током комунизма, где се емиграција види као „стратегија опстанка“ заједнице.

AB  - The Nazarenes were founded by a former Reformed minister Samuel Fröhlich about 1830 in Switzerland, but they soon expanded to Central and Eastern Europe. Because of their pacifist beliefs and refusal to swear and to take an oath a large number of the Nazarenes were condemned to severe prison sentences. This religious community was persecuted primarily during the communist era in Southeastern European countries (Hungary, Romania, Yugoslavia) since they were considered disloyal citizens and a threat to the government. From 1945 until 1960 the Nazarene illegal border crossing from Yugoslavia to Italy or Austria was highly present. Rejecting one of the essential components of Yugoslav communism, so-called “nationwide defence and social self-protection”, the Nazarenes were perceived as anti-communists and their existence was seen as illegitimate. The repression of this religious minority in communist Yugoslavia is the subject of this paper. The material collected for the purposes of this paper came to be the result of empirical research, conducted in Serbia (2009–2013) and the United States (2015), on the Nazarene community and their emigration to North America. Based on qualitative interviews and archival research, this paper aims to analyse community members’ narratives of their lives during communism and emigration of this religious minority across the Atlantic.

AB  - In this paper we have tried to show different aspects of the Romanian emigration
from the Serbian Banat, from the perspective of religious migration. The material collected
for the purposes of this paper came to be result of ethnographic research of the Romanian
neo-Protestant diaspora, based on interviews with pastors from the Serbian Banat and the
believers in the United States and Canada and available literature. The paper is divided
into two thematic areas. In the first part, we present a brief historical sketch of the Romanians
in the Banat region. The second part is devoted to the issues of emigration to overseas
countries – the United States and Canada and to the integration of Romanians abroad.
The issue of emigration of the Romanians to North America has occupied, so far, a number
of researchers who have been trying to explain the reasons for emigration in the recent
history. Although the topic of this paper is a special type of migration – religious migration,
it cannot be considered in isolation, but only in the broader context of migrations
and significance of religion for immigrant communities. Thus, we indicate several stages
in Romanian emigration, which are allocated according to the socio-economic and political
conditions that prevailed during the twentieth century. Beside Romanians, members of
different ethnic groups have emigrated from communist countries of East and South-East
Europe to West Europe, North America or Australia. Among them, representatives of different
minority religious groups were also present. Belonging to minority religious group
that had unrecognized and marginalized status in the home country was one of the reasons
for migration – escaping religious oppression. At beginning of the 20th century, after the
Romanians from the Serbian Banat joined and formed a large number of local neo-Protestant
communities, they found themselves in the position of a double minority – ethnic and
religious. As the position of the neo-Protestant communities in different social and political
circumstances was unfavorable, some religious groups (such as the Nazarenes), began
to emigrate very early on, not only for economic reasons, but mainly in search of religious
freedom. By going to the New World, the Romanians joined already existing neo-Protestant
or they established new communities, which would greatly affect their integration into
the new environment. In a secular society of the United States and Canada, in a variety
of different religious communities of Protestant origin, the Romanian neo-Protestants were
free to exercise their religious practices with no restraints within the new communities.
AB  - U savremenim istraživanjima migracija, veza između religije i emigracije predstavlja važan element za razumevanje promena kolektivnih identiteta nakon iseljavanja, kao i odnosa prema matičnoj zemlji. U ovom radu, pored pregleda iseljavanja Rumuna tokom 20. veka, ukazujemo na ulogu religije na procese emigracije i integracije rumunske etničke manjine sa prostora srpskog Banata u Severnoj Americi. Kako je položaj verskih zajednica, naročito verskih manjina, u različitim društvenim i političkim okolnostima tokom 20. veka bio nepovoljan, pojedine verske grupe, kao što su nazareni, veoma rano počinju da emigriraju u potrazi za verskom slobodom. U slučaju Rumuna koji su pripadali neoprotestantskim zajednicama, religija se posmatra kao „kanal“ za migraciju, ali i put za bržu integraciju u novoj sredini.

"God doesn't know about Nationalities" : Questioning Religion and Nationalism in Evangelical Communities in Romania

AB  - A strong link between religion and national identity has been particularly important in the study of Eastern and Southeastern Europe during the 20th century. The study of religion and its changes came into the focus of anthropological and sociological research especially after the communist period. One of the most important aspects of change was “religious revival” which also included conversion to new forms of religiosity such as the Evangelical communities, the Nazarenes, Baptists, Jehovah Witnesses, Seventh Day Adventists, and Pentecostals. The majority of Serbs living in Romania belong to the Serbian Orthodox Church, but during the last decades a number of Evangelicals appeared among the Serbian minority. This paper is based on the results of qualitative ethnographic fieldwork conducted in 2010 among the Serbian Evangelical communities in Romania. The research focuses on the influence of conversion from Christian Orthodoxy to Evangelicalism among Serbs, focusing on the Evangelical response to religion and nationalism discourses, changes in collective and personal identity of newly converted believers, and perception of converted co-ethnics by the non-Evangelical community. In addressing these issues, this article explores the role of religious traditions which do not overlap with any particular national/ethnic group, the relationship between religion and nationalism, and the presence of supra-national narrative emphasized in Evangelical communities.
