AB - Nanocomposite Zn2SnO4/SnO2 powder was
obtained by solid state synthesis from homogenized
starting nanopowders of ZnO and SnO2, mixed in the 1:1
molar ratio, structurally and morphologically characterized
using X-ray diffraction (XRD) and Scanning Electron
Microscopy (SEM). Thick film paste was made by adding
organic vehicles to the obtained powder. Three to five
layers (layer thickness approx. 12 µm) were screen printed
on alumina substrate with small test PdAg electrodes and
fired at 600oC for 30 minutes. SEM analysis confirmed formation of a porous structure suitable for humidity sensing.
Impedance response was studied at the working temperatures of 25 and 50oC in a humidity chamber where the
relative humidity (RH) was 30-90% and measured frequency 42 Hz – 1 MHz. With increase in film thickness the overall
sensor impedance increased. It reduced at 100 Hz from 36 to 0.25 MΩ (60 µm), from 23.4 to 0.25 MΩ (48 µm) and from
6.8 to 0.02 MΩ (36 µm) at 25 oC, while at 50 oC and also 100 Hz it reduced from 14 MΩ to 0.72 MΩ (48 µm) for RH 30 and
90%, respectively. The response (8 s) and recovery (10 s) was fast, showing that this nanocomposite has potential for
application in humidity sensing.

AB - Iron manganite (FeMnO3) powder with a cubic (bixbyite,−Ia3) crystal structure was obtained by a solid statereaction. Thick film paste (powder+organic vehicles) was screen printed on alumina substrate with test interdigitatedPdAg electrodes. Significant porosity (60.6%) composed of macropores (larger than 100 nm) wasdetermined by Hg porosimetry, changing only slightly from the first extrusion run indicating a stable poresystem. Hg porosimetry evaluation of thick film samples enabled estimation of true textural parameters of thethick film compared to powder. Impedance response of the thick film sensor was monitored in a humiditychamber in the relative humidity (RH) range 30–90%, at room temperature (25 °C) and frequency range from42 Hz to 1 MHz. At 100 Hz the impedance reduced from 10.41 MΩ for RH 30% to 0.68 MΩ for RH 90%. Analysisof complex impedance using an equivalent circuit showed the dominant influence of grain boundaries. Thesensor response and recovery was fast (several seconds) and a relatively low hysteresis value of 2.8% wasobtained.

AB - In the present study we investigated the interaction between 12-tungstophosphoric acid (WPA) and graphene oxide (GO) in their nanocomposite by utilizing the loading of WPA as an intrinsic parameter for interaction tuning. The Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy, temperature-programmed desorption, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, zeta-potential measurements, thermogravimetric analysis, X-ray diffraction, Raman spectroscopy and transmission electron microscopy methods revealed that ∼5–13 wt% of WPA represents critical loading that separates two distinct contributions to GO-WPA interaction. This was explained by the self-limiting nature of GO-WPA interaction, initially controlled by high dispersion of WPA on GO (up to 13 wt%), that is eventually overpowered by WPA-WPA interaction as loading increases. As a result, the WPA agglomerates are being formed because of which the hybrid character of the nanocomposite diminishes, i.e., the properties of independent components start to be manifested to greater extent. The obtained results provide an important framework for considering possible outcomes in other 2D-0D systems, whose interaction is relevant both from fundamental and applicative point of view. Thus, the GO/WPA nanocomposite illustrates how the interactions between the components can be used for tuning the properties of nanocomposite as a whole.

understanding of the link between the structure and properties of novel materials. Computational methods have been proven as a powerful tool in that quest,
allowing investigation of systems of various complexity and at different spatial and
temporal scales, with a desired composition and without any risk of contamination.
Moreover, constant increase of computational power allowed the application of
some of the most advanced computational methods at the scales which overcome
sub-nanometers (small molecules and clusters of atoms), usually considered as a
limit for first principles calculations. While the accuracy of such calculations reaches the experimental one, this approach also allows for the screening of a large number of systems, which is not experimentally feasible, and also the understanding of
general trends which is of great importance for both theoreticians and experimentalists. This text will cover author’s recent experiences in modelling and simulation
of nanoscale systems of different complexity, including metal oxides, metals, carbon
materials, molecular networks and complex catalytic systems.

AB - Zinc ferrite nanocrystalline powder was obtained by solid state synthesis of starting zinc oxide and hematite nanopowders. Field emission scanning electron microscopy (FESEM and transmission electron microscopy (TEM), X‐ray diffraction (XRD), X‐ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) and Raman spectroscopy confirmed the formation of nanocrystalline zinc‐ferrite powder with a mixed spinel structure with small amounts of remaining zinc oxide and hematite as impurities. Thick film paste was formed and screen printed on test interdigitated PdAg electrodes on alumina substrate. Formation of a porous nanocrystalline structure was confirmed by scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and Hg porosimetry. Humidity sensing properties of zinc ferrite thick films were investigated by monitoring the change in impedance in the relative humidity interval 30‐90% in the frequency range 42 Hz – 1 MHz at room temperature (25 °C) and 50 °C. At 42 Hz at both analyzed temperatures the impedance reduced ~ 46 times in the humidity range 30‐90%. The dominant influence of grain boundaries was confirmed by analysis of complex impedance with an equivalent circuit.

AB - The lithium-ion batteries are the most commonly used for energy storage in portable devices. Since lithium is relatively rare on earth but rapidly consumed, it is necessary to find an adequate replacement. Owing to the similar chemical properties of sodium and lithium, but much higher availability, sodium ion batteries are one of the best candidates to replace lithium-ion batteries. A variety of materials such as manganese oxide, vanadium oxide or phosphate can be used as an electrode material (anode and cathode) in sodium ion batteries due to the high ability of intercalation of sodium. In this work, NaxMnO2 powder was synthesized by glycine nitrate method. The precursor powder was annealed for four hours at different temperatures: 800, 850, 900 and 950 °C. The characterization of the obtained materials was carried out using following methods: X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron spectroscopy with energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (SEM/EDS) and transmission electron spectroscopy with energy dispersive Xray spectroscopy (TEM/EDS). Electrochemical properties were studied using cyclic voltammetry and chronopotentiometry in an aqueous solution of NaNO3. The layer structured Na0.7MnO2.05 with sheet-like morphology and Na0.4MnO2 with 3-D tunnel structure and rod-like morphology was obtained at 800 oC and 900 oC respectively. Na0.44MnO2 with rod-like morphology was annealed at 900 and 950 oC. 3D-tunnel structure Na0.44MnO2 obtained at 900 oC showed the best electrochemical behaviour in aqueous NaNO3 solution.

AB - Lithium has a low abundance in the Earth's crust, which in a few years will lead to difficult lithium production, and therefore difficult production of lithium-ion batteries. Sodium-ion batteries, on the other hand, have been proven to be a good replacement. The material obtained from iron combined with the phosphate and pyrophosphate compounds of sodium has attracted attention as a possible cathode material for sodium-ion batteries. NaFePO4 exists in two polymorphic structures (triphylite and maricite). Maricite NaFePO4 is a more thermodynamically stable structure than triphylite NaFePO4 but doesn’t have channels for Na+ movement and electrochemical performance of this structure is low. In comparison to maricite NaFePO4, triphylite NaFePO4 (structural analogue to LiFePO4) has one-dimensional channels for Na+-ions movement and better electrochemical activity but it is not stable and is difficult to synthesize. Herein, the maricite NaFePO4 can be obtained by sintering a polyanionic compound, Na4Fe3(PO4)2P2O7, at temperatures above 600 °C, as shown by XRD. Na4Fe3(PO4)2P2O7 is synthesized by the glycine-nitrate process after which it was sintered at temperatures above 500 °C. The glycine-nitrate process was found to catalyze the decomposition of the sintered Na4Fe3(PO4)2P2O7 to the NaFePO4 maricite. The electrochemical characterization of the sintered material, evaluated in aqueous NaNO3 and LiNO3 electrolyte by cyclic voltammetry, showed poor electrochemical activity of maricite NaFePO4. By exposing the sintered material to high anodic potentials, the electrochemical activity and specific capacity of the material were increased by 50% in case of NaNO3 and 80% in case of LiNO3 relative to the pristine with low activity. After electrochemical measurements, residual powder was characterized by FTIR and Raman spectroscopy. It was shown that high anodic polarization of the material tested in LiNO3 causes the formation of triphylite LiFePO4. Similarly, it is assumed that the electrochemical activity obtained by deep anodic polarization of the material in NaNO3 electrolyte originates from the formed triphylite NaFePO4. The obtained results open novel directions regarding the use of NaFePO4 in metal-ion rechargeable batteries.

abstract = "Lithium has a low abundance in the Earth's crust, which in a few years will lead to difficult lithium production, and therefore difficult production of lithium-ion batteries. AB - NiA and NiX zeolites were prepared and characterised using XRD, FTIR and SEM, and subsequently tested as electrodes for hydrogen (HER) and oxygen (OER) evolution reactions in alkaline media. Linear sweep voltammetry and chronoamperometry techniques showed that NiA has higher catalytic activity for these two reactions, as evidenced by higher current densities, which can be correlated with a higher weight fraction of Ni in this electrocatalyst than in the NiX and with its higher conductivity. HER and OER kinetic parameters, including Tafel slope, exchange current density and apparent activation energy were evaluated. Electrochemical impedance spectroscopy analysis yielded values of the resistance of the solution, charge transfer and mass transfer, as well as double layer capacitance and pseudo-capacitance of the working electrode, at different potentials and temperatures. Unlike the HER, during which the mass transfer resistance of the adsorbed intermediate is dominant in the case of NiA, the OER impedance response is controlled by the charge transfer process itself at the potentials of interest for these process. The overall resistance related to the HER is lower for NiA than for NiX. © 2018 Hydrogen Energy Publications LLC

AB - The rich surface chemistry and large surface area of graphene oxide (GO) provide a platform for various functional materials that synergistically enhance charge storage properties of the composite. In present work we have investigated interaction between GO and 12- thungstophosphoric acid (WPA) in their nanocomposites as a function of different mass ratio of constituents. For this purpose, the Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), X-ray photoelectron spectrometry (XPS), temperature programmed desorption method (TPD) and thermogravimetric/differential thermal analysis (TGA-DTA) methods were used. FTIR spectra have shown shifts and splitting of characteristic bands of WPA as a result of interactions with GO. Both XPS and TPD methods have shown an initial decrease of the total amount of surface oxygen groups of GO, with a minimum at around 10 wt.% of WPA, above which a restoration of the amount of surface oxygen groups was noticed. TGA-DTA analysis revealed an improved thermal stability of the material up to 25 wt.% of WPA; at higher loading of WPA the thermal properties of nanocomposite became alike to the ones of individual components. The obtained results suggest optimal conditions for preparation of GO-WPA nanocomposites for electrochemical charge storage applications.

AB - The application of rechargeable batteries is growing significantly and it became the nlost important field for largescale electric energy storage. While lithiuln-ion batteries (LIBs) have great commercial success, due to their large energy and power density, their application was limited because of the availability of lithiunl and its high cost. Sodiunl-ion batteries (SIBs) can be a promissing alternative due to the huge availability of sodium, its low price and similar intercalating electrochelnistry to LIBs. Among various Na-ion battery materials, low-cost and tunnel-type, Na0.44Mn02 (NMO) was regarded as one of the most pronlising cathode materials for sodium-ion batteries, because of its high theoretical specific capacity (122 rnA h g1) and good cyclability [2]. In this work, for the synthesis of NMO powder, rapid glycine-nitrate nlethod (GNM) was used, which, on the basis of the literature review, has not been used to synthesize this material so far.

abstract = "The application of rechargeable batteries is growing significantly and it became the nlost important field for largescale electric energy storage. In this work, for the synthesis of NMO powder, rapid glycine-nitrate nlethod (GNM) was used, which, on the basis of the literature review, has not been used to synthesize this material so far.",

AB - The application of rechargeable batteries is growing significantly and there is a need for developing cheaper batteries with good performances. Sodium-ion batteries could be a viable option due to higher abundance of sodium against lithium mineral resources, its low price and similar principles intercalate Na+ ions as Li+ ions in lithium-ion batteries. Different materials as manganese oxides and vanadium oxide are used as electrode materials in sodium batteries. Na0.44MnO2 was regarded as one of the most promising cathode materials for sodium-ion batteries due to its high specific capacity and good cyclability. In this work, Na0.4MnO2 was synthesized using glycine-nitrate method (GNM). The structure of synthesized powder was characterized by X-Ray Diffraction (XRD), while the particles morphology was examined by scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and transmission electron microscopy (TEM). The elemental mapping was performed by energy-dispersive Xray spectroscopy (EDS). XRD results showed that the phase structure of Na0.4MnO2 was orthorhombic with tunnel structure. TEM and SEM micrographs of obtained powder material showed uniformed rod-like shape particles with the average lengths and widths of 300 nm and 80 nm, respectively and EDS analysis confirmed that the sample contains Na, Mn, and O in an appropriate ration. The electrochemical behavior of Na0.4MnO2 was investigated by cyclic voltammetry (CV) in a saturated aqueous solution of NaNO3 at scan rates from 20 to 400 mV•s-1. The initial discharge capacity of Na0.4MnO2 in NaNO3 solution was 50 mA•h•g- 1, while after 15 cycles its value increased for 9%. while the efficiency (the ratio of the capacity charge and discharge) was amounting to ~ 95%. This indicates that material synthesized by GNM can be used as cathode material in aqueous sodium-ion batteries

AB - Due to the increasing use of batteries in everyday life and in industry, there is a need for developing cheaper batteries than the widely used lithium ion batteries. Lower price and higher abundance of sodium compared to lithium mineral resources intensified the development of Na-ion batteries. Aqueous lithium/ sodium rechargeable batteries have attracted considerable attention for energy storage because they do not contain flammable organic electrolytes as commercial batteries do, the ionic conductivity of the aqueous electrolyte is about two orders of magnitude higher than in non-aqueous electrolyte and the electrolyte salt and solvent are cheaper. Various materials such as manganese oxides, vanadium oxide and phosphates have been used as electrode materials (cathodic and anodic) in sodium batteries due to high sodium intercalation ability in both, organic and aqueous electrolytes. The most frequently used type of manganese oxides are Li–Mn–O or Na–Mn–O systems due to their tunnel or layered crystal structures which facilitate the lithium/sodium intercalation-deintercalation. In this work, a glycine-nitrate method (GNM) was applied for the synthesis of cathode material Na0.4MnO2.

AB - One of the ways to get rid of toxic organic compounds that industries release into natural waters is photocatalysis of the decomposition of organic compounds on the surface of heterogenous photocatalysts such as zinc oxide. Zinc oxide is a semiconductor that interacts with UV and near-UV visible light by generating electron-hole pairs which decompose organic molecules. Therefore it is useful to explore different ways of synthesizing zinc oxide and to test quality and quantity of organic decomposition photocatalysis so as to enable the commercial use of the material. Zinc oxide is also a respectable material for use as a photoelectrocatalyst in water oxidation, for example, which can be useful for generating oxygen while using natural sunlight - a clean and abundant energy source. In this project nanocrystalline zinc oxide was synthesized by glycin-nitrate combustion process and the powder was annealed on temperatures of 400 °C and 500 °C. Obtained particles where characterized in detail using X-ray powder diffraction (XRPD), Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), Raman spectroscopy, field emission scanning microscopy (FESEM), photoluminescence spectroscopy (PL) and diffuse reflectance spectroscopy (DRS). The results show that obtained samples are nanocrystalline wurtzite zinc oxide, with particle diameters of 33 nm (annealed at 400 °C) ad 48 nm (annealed at 500 °C). Both samples show significant amount of various crystal defects. Zinc oxide band gap of the samples are determined to be lower than the band gap of the bulk zinc oxide. Photoelectrocatalytic properties were investigated via electrochemical methods: linear voltammetry (LV), chronoamperometry (CA) and impedance spectroscopy (EIS). The results show that material is photostable and reactive to the light. Water oxidation is enhanced by exposing to sunlight. Finally, photocatalytic properties are tested with determining kinetic parameters of phenole and methyl blue decomposition. Zinc oxide nanoparticles are efficient photocatalysts, although sample annealed at 500 °C shows better properties than sample annealed at 400 °C.

AB - Pseudobrookite based nanopowder was obtained by solid state synthesis of starting hematite and anatase nanopowders in the weight ratio 55:45. Structural and morphological properties were analyzed using X-ray diffraction (XRD), BET, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), Raman spectroscopy, UV/Vis diffuse reflectance spectroscopy, Field emission scanning electron microscopy (FESEM) and Transmission electron microscopy (TEM) confirming the formation of nanocrystalline pseudobrookite. The obtained powder was mixed with a binder (ethyl cellulose), dispersant (α-terpinol) and adhesion agents (acetic acid and distilled water) to obtain a thick film paste. It was screen printed on alumina substrate with interdigitated PdAg electrodes and fired at 600 °C for 30 min. Formation of a porous nanocrystalline thick film structure was shown using Scanning electron microscopy (SEM), while Hall measurements enabled determination of carrier mobility. Change of impedance response in the frequency range 42 Hz–1 MHz with humidity was analyzed at room temperature (25 °C) and 50 °C in the relative humidity range 30–90% and 40–90%, respectively. At 42 Hz, and room temperature the impedance reduced ∼28 times, while at 50 °C it reduced ∼147 times in the relative humidity range 40–90%. The sensor showed rapid response (16 s) and relatively low hysteresis (8.39% at 25 °C and 2.64% at 50 °C) showing that this is a promising material for application in humidity sensing.

AB - Commercial Mn-Zn powder (Mn0.63Zn0.37Fe2O4, 93 wt. % and Fe2O3 7 wt. %) was milled 0.5, 1, 2 and 4 hours in a planetary ball mill. The goal was to observe intensive milling influences on oxidation and reduction processes that will happen during subsequent heating. Powders were characterized with XRD, SEM and particle seizer. Subsequent heating was monitored on TGA/DTA in an air atmosphere. After compaction of the milled powders, sintering was also performed in a dilatometric device. Sintered specimens were characterized micro structurally with SEM on a fresh breakage. Obtained differential TGA diagrams suggest intensive changes during prolonged milling of the oxidation kinetics on heating. Ferrite powders changed with milling as well as with second run heating were characterized to enable determination of the potentially best ratio of milling and heating to be applied to obtain the desired microstructure.

AB - Nanostructured Fe2TiO5 thick films were deposited on fluorine-doped tin oxide glass substrate using screen printing technology. Starting hematite and anatase nanopowders were mixed in molar ratios 1:1 and 1:1.5 and calcined in air at 900°C for 2 h to form pseudobrookite, Fe2TiO5. Functional powders and sintered thick films were analyzed by X-ray diffraction, scanning electron microscopy, energy-dispersive spectroscopy and transmission electron microscopy. UV–Vis analysis enabled determination of the band gap. Separation and transfer efficiency of photogenerated charge carriers was confirmed by the photoluminescence and electrochemical impedance spectra. Even though a slightly high onset oxygen evolution potential of photoexcited film electrode samples in NaOH was obtained, photocurrent densities were high, especially in the presence of H2O2 (~12 mA cm−2 at 1.7 V RHE). This work shows promise for practical application due to favorable band positions of pseudobrookite and low-cost screen printing technology.

AB - In recent years the nanocomposites of graphene oxide (GO) and different inorganic and organic compounds have shown great potential for charge storage applications. In present work we have investigated the influence of 12-tungstophosphoric acid (WPA) on surface chemistry of graphene oxide and thermal stability of nanocomposite. For this purpose nanocomposites with different mass ratios of GO and WPA were prepared. The thermal stability of nanocomposites was investigated by thermogravimetric and differential thermal analysis (TGA-DTA) while changes in surface chemistry of GO and structural properties of WPA were investigated by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) and temperature programmed desorption (TPD) method. The TGA-DTA measurements of composites have shown that the major mass loss, due to carbon combustion, is shifted to higher temperatures (~500 °C vs. 380 °C of pure GO). Furthermore, when the amount of WPA is higher than 25 mass percent the nanocomposites start to act like individual components, which was also confirmed by FTIR analysis. The amount of surface oxygen groups, monitored by both TPD and FTIR methods, showed ˝V˝ shaped dependence from the quantity of WPA with minimum at about 12 mass percent of WPA. At the same time, the FTIR spectra revealed the structural changes of WPA, displayed as shifting and splitting of characteristic bands of Keggin anion structure.

AB - In this work we have investigated changes in dielectric properties, electrical conductivity and complex impedance of Fe2TiO5 nanopowder compacts and bulk samples as a function of elevated temperature (room to 423 K compacts, to 443 K bulk samples), frequency (100 Hz–1 MHz) and composition (starting molar ratio of Fe2O3 and TiO2 1:1—PSB11 and 1:1.5—PSB115). XRD, SEM and TEM analysis of PSB11 and PSB115 powders obtained by a simple solid state process from starting hematite and anatase nanopowders confirmed the formation of nanostructured orthorhombic pseudobrookite with small amounts of excess hematite and rutile. The dielectric constant decreased with frequency and temperature for both compacts and bulk samples. Higher values were determined for bulk samples also reflecting the influence of sample composition. Change in the dielectric loss also reflected the influence of sample composition showing one maximum at high frequencies for compacts, and two maxima at room temperature for bulk samples. Complex impedance was analyzed using equivalent circuits and showed in the case of compacts the influence of both grain and grain boundary components, while in the case of bulk samples the dominant influence of grain boundaries. The temperature dependence of the determined grain and grain boundary resistance for compacts and grain boundary resistance for bulk samples was analyzed using the adiabatic small polaron hopping model enabling determination of activation energies for conduction, while the temperature dependence of relaxation times enabled determination of activation energies for relaxation. Changes in electrical conductivity for compacts and bulk samples followed Jonscher’s power law. The change of the determined frequency constant with temperature showed that at elevated temperatures the quantum mechanical-tunneling model for the case of small polaron hopping explains the conduction mechanism occurring in both compacts and bulk samples.

AB - Starting hematite (Fe2O3), zinc oxide (ZnO) and manganese carbonate (MnCO3) powders were homogenized in a planetary ball mill in stainless steel bowls with stainless steel balls for 15 min, calcined in air at 1000 C for 2 h, milled in a planetary ball mill for 30 minutes, followed by 4 h in an aghate mill, sieved through a 325 mesh to form four starting powders: MnFe2O4, ZnFe2O4, Mn0.5Zn0.5Fe2O4 and a two-phase mixture of zinc and manganese ferrite. Structural properties of the obtained powders were analyzed using XRD, SEM and EDS. Electrical properties of disk shaped samples were measured at room temperature on an impedance analyzer in the frequency range 100 to 40 MHz, enabling determination and comparison of dielectric permittivity and complex impedance. Complex relative permeability of toroid shaped samples was measured on an impedance analyzer in the frequency range from 1 MHz to 500 MHz.
