AB - The aim of this research was to obtain a carbon solid residue by the carbonization process of biomass in an inert atmosphere which, through physical activation and chemical treatment (using TEOS - tetraethyl orthosilicate) would allow creation of highly porous and spatially distinct ordered bio-SiC ceramics. The results of carbonization experiments at several operating temperatures and activation of carbons with multiple-cycle treatments TEOS clearly showed the possibility of obtaining SiC nano-structures, after performing the carbothermal reduction at 1400 °C. The increase in the activation temperature and the duration time starts the development of the SiC particles inside the porous structure. The XRPD analysis showed that the major SiC polytype has cubic SiC (β-SiC) structure and remainder is hexagonal SiC polytypic (α-SiC) structure. It was established that the carbons obtained from carbonization of the Platanus orientalis L. plane tree fruit (PTF) precursor and activated at 850 °C with longer holding times (1 and 2 h) exhibit β-SiC (cubic) nano-wires. A possible nano-wires increment mechanism was suggested. The obtained results represent significant contribution in understanding the process as well as the main characteristics of SiC nano-materials and their possible applications.

AB - Due to the development of industry and population growth in recent years, there are problems related to industrial wastewater that needs to be addressed in an environmentally friendly and economical way. All wastewater from plants, regardless of how it was generated, contains harmful substances that may have a certain degree of toxic impurities and must be treated if its quality does not meet the legal requirements. The purpose of wastewater treatment is the removal of harmful substances, which reduces the degree of its pollution, and at the same time achieves a certain economic and environmental effect. This technical solution ensures the optimization of the wastewater treatment process of the Ammunition Factory in Uzići. Wastewater is purified by a precipitation process using calcium oxide to remove colloidal substances and heavy metals. Most of the pollutants are of organic origin and their removal is performed by applying advanced oxidation processes using ozone and ozone in combination with ultrasound in order to achieve water quality that complies with legal regulations. Advanced oxidation processes are the most efficient methods for removing and degrading poorly soluble pollutants from wastewater. The purification process is optimized in terms of the technological process, concentration, treatment time and the amount of oxidizing agent applied. The degree of water pollution with organic compounds is determined on the basis of measurements of HPK, BOD and the concentration of heavy metals (lead, iron, chromium, copper, zinc, aluminum).

AB - Processing of hybrid composites represents a challenge for engineers where the aim is to establish compatibility among several materials. The aim of this study is to evaluate the effects of different sizes and morphologies of alumina fillers on the mechanical and thermal properties of the composite fibres based on ultra-high molecular weight polyethylene fibres (UHMWPE). These fibres have an outstanding elastic modulus and they are compatible with nonpolar sequences of the poly(ethylene-co-vinyl acetate) (EVA) matrix. Compared to the fibres, inferior mechanical properties of the matrix can be improved using alumina particles. Commercial aluminium oxide (Al2O3) nanoparticles, commercial whiskers and synthesized particles of Al2O3 doped with iron oxide, incorporated in different weight percentages, were used as fillers. The UHMWPE fibres were impregnated using the solution of EVA in toluene with dispersed particles. Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy and field emission scanning electron microscope were used for structural examination. Tensile testing revealed increasing of modulus of elasticity and strengths of obtained hybrid composite fibres. Thermal gravimetry showed improved thermal stability up to 350°C of the hybrid composite fibres with alumina particles doped with iron oxide. Results of tested samples showed that the best mechanical properties were for hybrid composite fibres with 1 wt% of iron doped alumina filler. © 2017, © The Author(s) 2017.

AB - Bismuth germanium oxide Bi12GeO20 (BGO) has very interesting electrical, optical and magnetic properties. In order to make devices based on this material more flexible, its powder was used for preparing polymer composites. This study reports investigation of the effects of using different solvents and polymers in preparation of BGO composite on the microstructural and optical behaviour of the resulting material. Preparation of such composites by a solution casting method is described. Poly (methyl methacrylate) (PMMA) and polystyrene (PS)) were used as matrix materials and acetone and chloroform as solvents. Their microstructure and the quality of BGO dispersion and deaggregation in polymer matrix were analyzed by SEM, Raman, XRD and optical spectroscopy. The influence of particle size distribution, their shapes, and concentration on the optical transmission is calculated based on Mie scattering theory and discussed, too.

The influence of particle size distribution, their shapes, and concentration on the optical transmission is calculated based on Mie scattering theory and discussed, too.",

AB - The use of copper anodes with non standard content of impurities for the treatment of waste, sulphur acid solutions that came as a result of the industrial process of electrolytic copper refining was investigated. Those solutions contain the high content of copper, nickel and arsine, and because of that, the copper anodes with high content of Ni, Pb, Sn and Sb were prepared. Examination the effect of high impurities content as well as the influence of the solution temperature on the anodes behaviour during the electrolytic process under the conditions that are the same as the industrial was the aim of this work. Obtained results clearly indicate that tested anodes could be used for the refined during the electrorefining process. Dissolution of copper anodes was not stoppage after the first appearance of the passivation region for A1 and A2 anodes while appearance of passivation for A3 anode, for test duration of 72 h, was not registered. The start time of the first passivation appearance is shorter in the case of the anode with high content of all impurities, anode A1. The first passivation occurrence was detected on higher temperature after about 29 h from the test starts. The change of chemical composition of electrolyte was monitored during electrolysis. Concentration of nickel in the working electrolyte at the end of process is increased and it corresponds to the Ni content in anodes. The copper and arsenic concentrations are decreased during the process. Arsenic passes into the anode slime, while the copper is deposited on the cathode and also passed in the slime. After the process is finished, obtained solution could be used for the nickel recover using the electrochemically or chemically methods.
