Nanoparticles: Potential for Use to Prevent Infections

AB  - One of the major issues related to medical devices and especially urinary stents are infections caused by different strains of bacteria and fungi, mainly in light of the recent rise in microbial resistance to existing antibiotics. Lately, it has been shown that nanomaterials could be superior alternatives to conventional antibiotics. Generally, nanoparticles are used for many applications in the biomedical field primarily due to the ability to adjust and control their physicochemical properties as well as their great reactivity due to the large surface-to-volume ratio. This has led to the formation of a new research field called nanomedicine which can be defined as the use of nanotechnology and nanomaterials in diagnostics, imaging, observing, prevention, control, and treatment of diseases. For example, coverings or coatings based on nanomaterials are now seen as a promising strategy for preventing or treating biofilms formation on healthcare kits, implants, and medical devices. Toxicity, inappropriate delivery, or degradation of conventionally used drugs for the treatment of infections may be avoided by using nanoparticles without or with encapsulated/immobilized active substances. Most of the materials which are used and examined for the preparation of the nanoparticles with encapsulated/immobilized active substances or smart reactive nanomaterials with antimicrobial effects are polymers, naturally derived antimicrobials, metal-based and non-metallic materials. This chapter provides an overview of the current state and future perspectives of the nanoparticle-based systems based on these materials for prevention, control, or elimination of biofilm-related infections on urinary stents. It also addresses manufacturing conditions indicating the huge potential for the improvement of existing and development of new promising stent solutions.

AB  - In order to integrate more and more variable renewable energy sources (VRES) electric grids play a significant role. There is an obvious need for more interconnections and more enhanced grids with more VRES. On the other side, the monetary, material, social and spatial constraints (free corridors) impose limits on grid expansions. Robust modelling of electric grids (distribution, transmission and interconnection) at World level in integrated assessment models (IAMs) is beyond the state of the art of current computation capabilities and data availability. A number of relevant input data like length of the grids, voltage levels, rated power, and after that material prices, population density, VRES shares of generation and flexibility technologies, hourly curtailments in the energy system are not sufficient to calculate explicit limitations imposed by power flows. Therefore, the idea of this paper is that in the absence of sufficient data and computability, for the first time some expert assumptions in the form of proportions are used to represent interconnection grids as an important constraint and flexibility option for variable renewable energy production, modelled at hourly level during one year using EnergyPLAN. These assumptions are about proportions of newly integrated renewable energy between transmission and distribution grids, proportions of grids to the generation plants and their utilization. Suggested method for application in WILIAM will be illustrated.

AB  - Dense calcium phosphate-based ceramics were fabricated to be used as targets for pulsed laser deposition (PLD). Nanostructured cobalt-substituted hydroxyapatite (Co:HAP) was used as a starting powder. To vary phase composition and microstructure of targets, two sintering approaches were applied, conventional (CS) and two-step sintering (TSS). The obtained results show that in both cases biphasic calcium phosphate (BCP) ceramics (targets) were prepared, with slightly different HAP-to-β–TCP amount ratio and a significantly different microstructure. While the CS method yielded fully dense ceramics with an average grain size of 1.3 μm, the ceramics prepared by TSS had a density of 98.5%, with a predominant grain size below 100 nm. (Ca + Co)P coatings were prepared by PLD of (Ca + Co)P targets. The temperature of the Ti substrate was adjusted to be 25 and 500 °C. The results show that the phase composition of (Ca + Co)P coatings depended on the phase composition of targets as well as on the temperature of the Ti substrate. The coating prepared at 25 °C using CS target consisted of three calcium phosphate phases, HAP, β–TCP and α–TCP; when the TSS target was used, the coating was biphasic, containing HAP and β–TCP. When the substrate was heated to 500 °C, regardless of whether the CS or the TSS target was used, the deposited coatings were composed of HAP and α–TCP. Due to different phase compositions, the (Ca + Co)P coatings deposited at 25 °C showed an improved hardness compared to those deposited at 500 °C. The obtained results confirmed that the phase composition, morphology and mechanical properties of 0.3 μm thick (Ca + Co)P coatings on a Ti substrate can be tailored by employing (Ca + Co)P targets with different microstructures, and also by varying the temperature of the Ti substrate during deposition experiments.

AB  - Immobilizing antifungal polyenes such as nystatin (Nys) and amphotericin B (AmB) into biodegradable formulations is advantageous compared to free drug administration providing sustained release, reduced dosing due to localized targeting and overall reduced systemic drug toxicity. In this study, we encapsulated Nys and AmB in medium chain length polyhydroxyalkanoates (mcl-PHA) microspheres (7–8 µm in diameter). The obtained formulations have been validated for antifungal activity in vitro against a panel of pathogenic fungi including species of Candida, Aspergillus, Microsporum and Trichophyton genera and toxicity and efficacy in vivo using the zebrafish model of disseminated candidiasis. While free polyenes, especially AmB, were highly toxic to zebrafish embryos at the effective (MIC) doses, after their loading into mcl-PHA microspheres, inner organ toxicity and teratogenicity associated with both drugs were not observed, even at 100 × MIC doses. The obtained mcl-PHA/polyene formulations have successfully eradicated C. albicans infection and showed an improved therapeutic profile in zebrafish by enhancing infected embryos survival. This approach is contributing to the antifungal arsenal as polyenes, although the first broad-spectrum antifungals on the market are still the gold standard for treatment of fungal infections.

AB  - Pure Ti films deposited by radio-frequency magnetron sputtering on FTO glass were anodized to fabricate TiO2 nanotubes (NTs) arrays. The TiO2 NTs/FTO samples were sintered at 450, 550 and 630°C, in ambient air. The thermal treatment did not influence the crystal phase composition, preserving in all cases the anatase single phase. As expected, the crystalline anatase quality improved with the annealing temperature. Nevertheless, slight differences in nanotubular morphology, such as the appearance of grains inside the walls, were observed in the case of the sample sintered at 630°C. Chemical analysis by X-ray Photoelectron Spectroscopy of annealed samples revealed the presence of Sn inside TiO2 NTs, due to diffusion of Sn from the substrate to TiO2. For the substrate was used FTO glass whose top layer consists of SnO2 doped with F. Rutherford Backscattering Spectrometry and Time-of-Flight Elastic Recoil Detection Analysis were carried out to study the elemental depth profile of the films. It was found that the temperature of sintering controls the Sn diffusion inside TiO2 film. Sn atoms diffuse towards the TiO2 NTs surface for the samples annealed at 450 and 550°C. AB  - Chemically modified steroids have a long history as anti-neoplastic drugs. Incorporation of a lactone moiety in the steroid nucleus, as in previously obtained 3β-acetoxy-17-oxa-17a-homoandrost-5-en-16-one (A) and 3β-hidroxy-17-oxa-17a-homoandrost-5-en-16-one (B), often results in enhanced anticancer properties. In this work, chitosan-based (Ch) nanoparticles were created and loaded with potent anticancer steroidal compounds, A and B. Changes to hormone receptor binding and cytotoxicity were then measured. In agreement with our previous results for A and B, A- and B-loaded Ch displayed cytotoxic properties against cancer cell lines. Both A-Ch and B-Ch showed activity toward estrogen negative breast cancer (MDA-MB-231) and androgen negative prostate cancer cell lines (PC-3). Greater selectivity toward cancer cells versus healthy lung fibroblast (MRC-5) was observed for B-Ch particles. Cell viability and cytotoxicity measurements after a recovery period indicate more robust recovery of healthy cells versus malignant cells. Compounds A and B or their Ch-encapsulated forms were shown to have negligible affinity for the ligand binding domain of estrogen receptor β or the androgen receptor in a fluorescent yeast screen, suggesting a lack of estrogenicity and androgenicity. Steroid-loaded chitosan nanoparticles display strong cytotoxicity towards MDA-MB-231 and PC-3 with a lack of hormone activity, indicating their safety and efficacy.

Immobilization of Horseradish Peroxidase on Magnetite-Alginate Beads to Enable Effective Strong Binding and Enzyme Recycling during Anthraquinone Dyes’ Degradation

AB  - The aim of this study was to investigate covalent immobilization of horseradish peroxidase (HRP) on magnetic nanoparticles (Mag) encapsulated in calcium alginate beads (MABs) for color degradation, combining easy and fast removal of biocatalyst from the reaction mixture due to its magnetic properties and strong binding due to surface alginate functional groups. MABs obtained by extrusion techniques were analyzed by optical microscopy, FEG-SEM and characterized regarding mechanical properties, magnetization and HRP binding. HRP with initial concentration of 10 mg/gcarrier was successfully covalently bonded on MABs (diameter ~1 mm, magnetite/alginate ratio 1:4), with protein loading of 8.9 mg/gcarrier, immobilization yield 96.9% and activity 32.8 U/g. Immobilized HRP on MABs (HRP-MABs) was then used to catalyze degradation of two anthraquinonic dyes, Acid Blue 225 (AB225) and Acid Violet 109 (AV109), as models for wastewater pollutants. HRP-MABs decolorized 77.3% and 76.1% of AV109 and AB225, respectively after 15 min under optimal conditions (0.097 mM H2O2, 200 mg of HRP-MABs (8.9 mg/gcarrier), 0.08 and 0.1 g/mg beads/dye ratio for AV109 and AB225, respectively). Biocatalyst was used for 7 repeated cycles retaining 75% and 51% of initial activity for AB225 and AV109, respectively, showing potential for use in large scale applications for colored wastewater treatment.

AB  - The rise of innovation in the electrical industry is driven by the controlled design of new materials. The hybrid materials based on magnetite/nanocellulose are highly interesting due to their various applications in medicine, ecology, catalysis and electronics. In this study, the structure and morphology of nanocellulose/magnetite hybrid nanomaterials were investigated. The effect of nanocellulose loading on the crystal structure of synthesized composites was investigated by XRD and FTIR methods. The presented study reveals that the interaction between the cellulose and magnetic nanoparticles depends on the nanocellulose content. Further, a transition from cellulose II to cellulose I allomorph is observed. SEM and EDS are employed to determine the variation in morphology with changes in component concentrations. By the calculation of magnetic interactions between adjacent Fe3+ and Fe2+ ions within composites, it is determined that ferromagnetic coupling predominates.

Optofluidic Micromachined Platform for Refractive Index Measurement

AB  - We present a combination of micromachined optofluidic platforms equipped with a fiber-optic sensing configuration based on a three-path Mach–Zehnder interferometer (MZI) for simultaneous measurement of the refractive index of liquids and the autocalibration in dynamic regime. The sensing principle is based on the low-coherence interferometry, characterized by a generation of Gaussian enveloped interferograms, for which the position of its maximum depends on the optical path difference (OPD) between the sensing and reference arm of the MZI. When liquid flows through the central microchannel of the optofluidic platform it crosses the light beam between the two optical fibers in the sensing arm causing the OPD change. An algorithm has been applied for the calculation of the refractive index of liquids out of the raw interference signals. We obtained a very good agreement between the experimental results and literature data of refractive indices of subjected fluids. The accuracy of refractive index measurement is approximately 1%, predominantly determined by the accuracy of reading the position of the mechanical scanner. The proposed sensor is attractive for the label-free biological, biochemical, and chemical sensing owing autocalibration and high sensitivity yet consuming a very small sample volume of 1 µL. It is capable to measure the refractive index of various liquids and/or gases simultaneously in the process.

The sensing principle is based on the low-coherence interferometry, characterized by a generation of Gaussian enveloped interferograms, for which the position of its maximum depends on the optical path difference (OPD) between the sensing and reference arm of the MZI. When liquid flows through the central microchannel of the optofluidic platform it crosses the light beam between the two optical fibers in the sensing arm causing the OPD change. An algorithm has been applied for the calculation of the refractive index of liquids out of the raw interference signals. We obtained a very good agreement between the experimental results and literature data of refractive indices of subjected fluids. The accuracy of refractive index measurement is approximately 1%, predominantly determined by the accuracy of reading the position of the mechanical scanner. The proposed sensor is attractive for the label-free biological, biochemical, and chemical sensing owing autocalibration and high sensitivity yet consuming a very small sample volume of 1 µL. It is capable to measure the refractive index of various liquids and/or gases simultaneously in the process.",

AB  - Chemically modified steroids have a long history as anti-neoplastic drugs. Incorporation of a lactone moiety in the steroid nucleus, as in previously obtained 3β-acetoxy-17-oxa-17a-homoandrost-5-en-16-one (A) and 3β-hidroxy-17-oxa-17a-homoandrost-5-en-16-one (B), often results in enhanced anticancer properties. In this work, chitosan-based (Ch) nanoparticles were created and loaded with potent anticancer steroidal compounds, A and B. Changes to hormone receptor binding and cytotoxicity were then measured. In agreement with our previous results for A and B, A- and B-loaded Ch displayed cytotoxic properties against cancer cell lines. Both A-Ch and B-Ch showed activity toward estrogen negative breast cancer (MDA-MB-231) and androgen negative prostate cancer cell lines (PC-3). Greater selectivity toward cancer cells versus healthy lung fibroblast (MRC-5) was observed for B-Ch particles. Cell viability and cytotoxicity measurements after a recovery period indicate more robust recovery of healthy cells versus malignant cells. Compounds A and B or their Ch-encapsulated forms were shown to have negligible affinity for the ligand binding domain of estrogen receptor β or the androgen receptor in a fluorescent yeast screen, suggesting a lack of estrogenicity and androgenicity. Steroid-loaded chitosan nanoparticles display strong cytotoxicity towards MDA-MB-231 and PC-3 with a lack of hormone activity, indicating their safety and efficacy.

AB  - Dense calcium phosphate-based ceramics were fabricated to be used as targets for pulsed laser deposition (PLD). Nanostructured cobalt-substituted hydroxyapatite (Co:HAP) was used as a starting powder. To vary phase composition and microstructure of targets, two sintering approaches were applied, conventional (CS) and two-step sintering (TSS). The obtained results show that in both cases biphasic calcium phosphate (BCP) ceramics (targets) were prepared, with slightly different HAP-to-β–TCP amount ratio and a significantly different microstructure. While the CS method yielded fully dense ceramics with an average grain size of 1.3 μm, the ceramics prepared by TSS had a density of 98.5%, with a predominant grain size below 100 nm. (Ca + Co)P coatings were prepared by PLD of (Ca + Co)P targets. The temperature of the Ti substrate was adjusted to be 25 and 500 °C. The results show that the phase composition of (Ca + Co)P coatings depended on the phase composition of targets as well as on the temperature of the Ti substrate. The coating prepared at 25 °C using CS target consisted of three calcium phosphate phases, HAP, β–TCP and α–TCP; when the TSS target was used, the coating was biphasic, containing HAP and β–TCP. When the substrate was heated to 500 °C, regardless of whether the CS or the TSS target was used, the deposited coatings were composed of HAP and α–TCP. Due to different phase compositions, the (Ca + Co)P coatings deposited at 25 °C showed an improved hardness compared to those deposited at 500 °C. The obtained results confirmed that the phase composition, morphology and mechanical properties of 0.3 μm thick (Ca + Co)P coatings on a Ti substrate can be tailored by employing (Ca + Co)P targets with different microstructures, and also by varying the temperature of the Ti substrate during deposition experiments.

AB  - Due to the growing number of people infected with the new coronavirus globally, which weakens immunity, there has been an increase in bacterial infections. Hence, knowledge about simple and low-cost synthesis methods of materials with good structural and antimicrobial properties is of great importance. A material obtained through the combination of a nanoscale hydroxyapatite material (with good biocompatibility) and titanium dioxide (with good degradation properties of organic molecules) can absorb and decompose bacteria. In this investigation, three different synthesis routes used to prepare hydroxyapatite/titanium dioxide nanomaterials are examined. The morphology and semiquantitative chemical composition are characterized by scanning electron microscopy with energy dispersive X-ray analysis (SEM-EDX). The obtained materials’ phase and structural characterization are determined using the X-ray powder diffraction method (XRD). The crystallite sizes of the obtained materials are in the range of 8 nm to 15 nm. Based on XRD peak positions, the hexagonal hydroxyapatite phases are formed in all samples along with TiO2 anatase and rutile phases. According to SEM and TEM analyses, the morphology of the prepared samples differs depending on the synthesis route. The EDX analysis confirmed the presence of Ti, Ca, P, and O in the obtained materials. The IR spectroscopy verified the vibration bands characteristic for HAp and titanium. The investigated materials show excellent antimicrobial and photocatalytic properties.

AB  - MgTiO3 is a material often used in different types of high-frequency capacitors, temperature compensating capacitors, and chip capacitors, so the enhancement of this material is still the focus of many research groups due to its remarkable dielectric properties. Magnesium titanate ceramics were prepared by applying mechanical activation as the first step. Powders prepared in this way were SPS sintered, at 1200 °C with a heating rate of 100 °C/min. After reaching the desired temperature, a uniaxial pressure of 50 MPa was applied. The dwell time at this condition was 5 min, followed by cooling to room temperature at 5°C/min. X-ray diffraction was performed in order to establish the phase composition of milled powders and obtained ceramics. Differences between samples milled in various times intervals, as well as sintered ceramics were examined by means of scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and energy dispersive spectroscopy (EDS). The presence of MgTiz0s phase was detected in XRD and was confirmed by EDS analysis for the non-milled ceramics. In the samples obtained from milled powders, no MgTi2O5 was detected in XRD patterns, but this phase was detected in EDS spectra in a lower amount. Dielectric measurements were performed at a wide range of frequencies, while the hardness of the SPS samples was measured at loads up to 10 N. The highest value of the hardness was obtained from powder milled for 15 min before SPS.

AB  - In this paper, we report the mild sonochemical synthesis of hexagonal (β) NaYF4:Yb,Er mesocrystals at low temperature of 40 °C. The nucleation and transformation of crystal structures is investigated in the course of time, and it is shown that the pure β phase is obtained after 2 h of pulsed sonication. The crystallization of orthorhombic YF3:Yb,Er and cubic (α) NaYF4:Yb,Er precedes the appearance of a thermodynamically stable β NaYF4:Yb,Er phase. Based on the evolution of the nanoparticle morphology, it is concluded that the transition from α to β phase is consistent with the dissolution-recrystallization process, while the final shape of mesocrystals is a consequence of the oriented attachment growth in the newly formed β phase nanocrystallites along two planes. The structural properties of all compounds are analyzed and correlated with their thermal and optical characteristics. The pump power dependence of green and red emissions confirms that only two-photon process is involved in up-conversion, which is superior in β phase mesocrystals.

AB  - An emerging technology of active packaging enables prolongation of food shelf life by limiting the oxygen transfer and the reactivity of free radicals, which both destruct food freshness. In this work, Fe2TiO5 nanoparticles were synthesized using a modified sol–gel method and evaluated as an enforcement of alginate food packaging film. Pure phase Fe2TiO5 nanoparticles had an average particle size of 44 nm and rhombohedral morphology. Fe2TiO5 nanoparticles induce no cell damage of human Caco-2 epithelial cells and show no inhibitory effect towards growth of a panel of bacterial strains, suggesting good biocompatibility. Films obtained by incorporation of Fe2TiO5 nanoparticles into alginate using the solvent casting method show no migration of iron or titanium ions from films to food simulants again suggesting their safety as a packaging material. Fe2TiO5 nanoparticles also showed strong antioxidant efficiency as determined using the DPPḢ assay, and confirmed further in a preservation test on fresh fruit.

AB  - The initial corrosion behavior of AZ63 magnesium alloy was investigated in 1, 3, 5 and 7 wt.% NaCl solutions by means of corrosion potential, linear polarization, electrochemical impedance spectroscopy, and polarization measurements, during exposure in the corrosion media. Results show that the increase in chloride concentration provokes an increase in the corrosion rate. Based on the obtained kinetics parameters the mechanisms of anodic dissolution and hydrogen evolution reactions were discussed, and kinetic models were proposed. It is concluded that anodic dissolution proceeds under Temkin conditions and hydrogen evolution reaction depends on the surface coverage of Mg(OH)2 species.

The mineral named Jadarit found in Serbia, contains lithium, sodium, boron and silica. Estimated reserves of Jadarit are of low significance for World production of lithium, but may be significant at EU level and for Serbian economy. Certain companies are interested to enter the production chain from Jadarit. These companies present the possibility for future industrial battery development in Serbia, which may lead innovative final products. They claim optimistic 3-15% increase of GDP (5). Public debate provided argumented shortcomings of currently proposed technology for lithium extraction from Jadarit (6). Major concerns are regarding permanent devastation of lush ecosystem, fertile soil, drinking water, air pollution. These non-monetary assets and their contribution to GDP should be monetized as sine qua non for objective cost-benefit analysis. Therefore, instead of polarization, public debate that identifies key critical points in technology of lithium extraction and its effects on human health and environment provides basis for future research that will develop new technologies capable to protect environment.

AB  - Tematika primene fotonaponskih elemenata u poljoprivredi prvi put se spominje u istraživanjima u Nemačkoj 1982. godine, dok se na prostoru Srbije prvi radovi pojavljuju već 1986.godine. Ideja primeneje varirala od države do države sa vremenom i padom cena panela. Ujednom periodu dokje cena panela bila visoka akcenat je bio na optimalnom pozicioniranju panela na najboljim lokacijama, što je dovelo do konflikta sa poljoprivrednom proizvodnjom. Sa padom cene panela, i pojavom dvostranih panela otvaraju se mogućnosti za vertikalno pozicioniranje ali i povećanje razmaka između redova kako bi se poljoprivredna proizvodnja nesmetano obavljala. Poslednja istraživanja pokazuju da je na ovaj način moguće povećati i poljoprivrednu proizvodju i obezbediti dodatne količine električne energije za poljoprivredu. Dodatne količine energije za poljiprivredu mogu biti iskorišćene za produžavanje osvetljenosti biljaka, ali i ostale delatnosti navodnjavanje, grejanje, hlađenje, transport, proizvodnja organskog gnojiva itd. Stoga se odustalo od prvobitnih ideja, tj. umesto da se energija proizvodi na racun poljoprivrede, ideja je da se poveca proizvodnja na racun optimalnog iskoriscenja sunca. Ovoje od posebnog značaja u situaciji finansijskog pritiska na sektor poljoprivrede usled energetskih šokova (2021-2022. godine) koji su doveli do povećanja cene sirove nafte. Takođe očekuje se da troškovi ugljenično intenzivne poljoprivrede budu rasli uz primenu mera prekogranične kontrole i oporezivanja emisija. U radu će biti prikazano stanje u oblasti inovativne primene fotonaponskih elemenata u poljoprivredi kroz pregled najznačajnijih publikacija i predložiti najpodesniji koncept ekonomski optimalnog iskorišćenja sunčeve energije na studijama slučaja Nemačke i Srbije.

AB  - In this paper, we report the mild sonochemical synthesis of hexagonal (β) NaYF4:Yb,Er mesocrystals at low temperature of 40 °C. The nucleation and transformation of crystal structures is investigated in the course of time, and it is shown that the pure β phase is obtained after 2 h of pulsed sonication. The crystallization of orthorhombic YF3:Yb,Er and cubic (α) NaYF4:Yb,Er precedes the appearance of a thermodynamically stable β NaYF4:Yb,Er phase. Based on the evolution of the nanoparticle morphology, it is concluded that the transition from α to β phase is consistent with the dissolution-recrystallization process, while the final shape of mesocrystals is a consequence of the oriented attachment growth in the newly formed β phase nanocrystallites along two planes. The structural properties of all compounds are analyzed and correlated with their thermal and optical characteristics. The pump power dependence of green and red emissions confirms that only two-photon process is involved in up-conversion, which is superior in β phase mesocrystals.

AB  - Resveratrol, polyphenol from stilbene family, has demonstrated beneficial effects on human health in numerous studies. Among these effects are cardioprotective, anti-cancer, neuroprotective, antimicrobial and other. In vivo, application of this phytochemical often lacks significant results. This is mainly because of its poor bioavailability, caused by low water solubility, sensitivity to light, oxygen and pH change, and high reactivity. Micro- and nanoformulations of resveratrol have been described to highly improve bioavailabiliy. However, there are limitations to this approach, such as demanding synthesis process, necessity of expensive or toxic chemicals, or poor loading capacity. We have used a simple physicochemical solvent-non solvent method to synthetise additive-free, stabile and uniform elongated resveratrol micro- and nanoparticles (RES-particles). The drying conditions were varied to examine their influence on the morphological characteristics of resveratrol particles. Differential effects of drying at ambient, low, and elevated temperature as well as effects of centrifugation and stability of RES-particle suspension during the time were documented. RES-particles were characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD), differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), ultraviolet-visible (UV-Vis) spectrophotometry, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) and optical microscopy. Biocompatibility of RESparticles was preliminary assessed through MTT toxicity assay.

AB  - Obnovlјiva energija je predložena kao primarni pristup za dekarbonizaciju energetskog sistema i razdvajanje potrošnje energije od emisije gasova sa efektom staklene bašte, kako u energetskoj literaturi, tako i u praksi. Evropska unija je prepoznala izazov i postavila tranziciju na obnovlјive izvore energije visoko na dnevni red svojih politike, sa najnovijom ambicijom da do 2050. godine bude uglјenično-neutralna ekonomija. Sa druge strane, države Zapadnog Balkana i dalјe zavise od fosilnih goriva kao jednog od glavnih izvora u energetskom miksu. Ambicija za tranziciju na obnovlјive izvore energije u državama Zapadnog Balkana, uklјučujući i Srbiju, uglavnom je vođena težnjama ka njihovoj evropskoj budućnosti. Štaviše, potpisivanje Ugovora o Energetskoj zajednici pružilo je institucionalne i pravne alate kako ugovornim stranama, tako i Evropskoj uniji za izgradnju zajedničkog energetskog tržišta. Ovi procesi inspirisali su mnoge autore u poslednje dve decenije da analiziraju tehničke, ekonomske, tržišne i životno-sredinske aspekte obnovlјivih izvora, međutim, upravlјanje i planiranje, iako identifikovani kao izazovni, izostali iz detaljnije analize. Ovaj rad ima za cilј da prikaže pregled odabrane literature i zakonodavstva o tranziciji na obnovlјive izvore energije, kako bi se analizirala glavna pravna i politička postignuća, kao i ambicije za tranziciju u Srbiji. Takođe, u radu se raspravlјa o lekcijama naučenim iz relevantne literature kroz prizmu upravlјanja energijom i planiranja. Prvi deo rada daje pregled literature glavnih koncepata tranzicije na obnovlјive izvore energije. Istorijska analiza politika i prava obnovlјivih izvora energije u Evropskoj uniji, Energetskoj zajednici i Srbiji je u fokusu drugog dela. U poslednjem delu, rezimiraju se lekcije naučene iz literature za buduće upravlјanje i planiranje energije kroz perspektive procesa energetskog planiranja, evaluacije politika i obrazovanja i administrativnih kapaciteta. U zaključku se ističe važnost postojećih nalaza iz literature kao budućih koraka ka ubrzanom upravlјanju i planiranju energije.
AB  - Renewable energy has been suggested as the primary approach for decarbonizing the energy system and decoupling energy consumption from greenhouse gas emissions, both in the energy literature and in practice. The European Union has acknowledged the challenge and put renewable energy transition high on the policy agenda with the latest ambition of being a carbon-neutral economy by 2050. On the other hand, Western Balkan countries are still dependent on fossil fuels as one of their primary energy mix sources. The pledge about the European future has mostly driven the renewable energy transition ambition in the Western Balkan countries, including Serbia. Moreover, signing the Energy Community Treaty provided institutional and legal tools to both Contracting Parties and the European Union to build the common energy market. These processes inspired many authors in the last two decades to analyse technical, economic, market and environmental aspects of renewables. However, the governance and planning, even though identified as challenging, have been side-lined from the analysis. This paper aims to overview the selected renewable energy transition literature and legislation to analyse the main legal and policy milestones reached so far, as well as ambition in Serbia. It also discusses the lessons learned from the related literature from energy governance and planning prism. To do so, it firstly provides a literature review of the main concepts of the renewable energy transition. Moreover, the historical analysis of renewable energy policy and legal developments in the European Union, the Energy Community and Serbia are in the second part's focus. Finally, the discussion part summarizes lessons learned from the literature for future energy governance and planning with the perspective of the energy planning process, policy evaluation, and education and administrative capacity. The article concludes by emphasizing the importance of taking the current literature findings as prospective steps to follow towards accelerated energy governance and planning.

Estimation of honey bee colony infection with Nosema ceranae and Varroa destructor using fluorescence spectroscopy in combination with differential scanning calorimetry of honey samples

AB  - In this preliminary study, we applied the Multivariate Curve Resolution- Alternating Least Squares (MCR-ALS) method to analyze the excitation-emission matrices of multifloral honey samples, combined with differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) to estimate infection of honey bee colonies with N. ceranae or V. destructor. Fluorescence spectroscopy combined with MCR-ALS was used to determine the ratio of the spectral components originating from proteins (C1) and phenolics (C2), two minor but essential constituents of honey, as a ratiometric indicator of infection level in related hives. The C1/C2 ratio decreased linearly with the increase of infection in both N. ceranae and V. destructor cases, the R2 was 0.941 and 0.912, respectively. Additionally, DSC has shown that the magnitude of changes in sugar environments of the honey samples, reflected in sugar phase transitions, rises with increasing infection level in bee colonies. These results indicate that fluorescence combined with MCR-ALS could be used for rapid, non-destructive and cheap screening of honey to estimate the level of infection of honey bee colonies.
