AB  - In order to reconstruct the Serbian perception of Europe and Europeans, the 
author analyses the linguistic system data (including dictionary definitions, wordformative derivatives, collocations), the questionnaire data (in groups of older and 
younger respondents), including the data from an associative dictionary, and the 
textual data from contemporary corpora. While the dictionary definitions focus on 
the geographical dimension of Europe, all the other data do involve its symbolic 
dimension, and the contents of these connotations result from Serbia’s aspirations to become a member of the European Union. To Serbians E u r o p e is a synonym of the 
West, associated with high culture, substantial welfare, and civilisation. Serbia itself, 
in turn, is located in the symbolic East, thus beyond the borders of symbolic Europe, 
which is perceived auto-reflectively by Serbians as a complex of periphery or even 
of subordination. The perception of Europe (depending on the respondents’ age) is 
mostly positive, although it is associated with an assignment to be made, a path to 
follow, and a difficult target to reach.
AB  - Serbski obraz Europy i Europejczyka autorka rekonstruuje, analizując
dane systemowe (w tym definicje słownikowe, derywaty słowotwórcze, kolokacje), dane ankietowe (w grupie respondentów starszych i młodszych),
dane słownika asocjacyjnego, oraz współczesne korpusowe dane tekstowe.
O ile definicje słownikowe skupiają się na geograficznym wymiarze Europy,
wszystkie pozostałe dane niosą jej wymiar symboliczny, a treść tych konotacji wynika z aspiracji Serbii do zostania członkiem Unii Europejskiej.
Europa jest dla Serbów synonimem Zachodu, utożsamianym z wysoką
kulturą, dobrobytem, cywilizacją. Serbia lokowana jest na symbolicznym
wschodzie, a więc poza granicami symbolicznej Europy, co w autorefleksji
Serbów rodzi kompleks peryferyjności czy nawet podrzędności. Obraz Europy (zniuansowany w zależności od wieku respondentów) jest w zasadzie
pozytywny, ale kojarzy się z zadaniem do wykonania, drogą do przebycia,
trudno osiągalnym celem.
