AB - Sn-Pd electrocatalysts with a constant atomic ratio of 60 at.% Sn‒40 at.% Pd suitable for potential application in direct ethanol fuel cells were synthesized using a novel two-step electrodeposition method. First, Sn was electrodeposited in various forms of dendrites, from spear-like and needle-like to individual fern-like dendrites to a network of intertwined fern-like dendrites, by varying the cathodic potential and then performing electrodeposition of Pd at a constant current density in the second step. A morphological and elemental analysis of Sn and Sn-Pd electrocatalysts was performed using scanning electron microscopy (SEM), energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDS) and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) techniques, while the size of Sn dendrites was analyzed using the particle size distribution (PSD) method. Cyclic voltammetry (CV) and chronoamperometry were applied in order to study the catalytic behavior of Sn-Pd electrocatalysts in the ethanol oxidation reaction (EOR), while CO stripping was used to estimate the antipoisoning capability of the electrocatalysts. The Sn surface morphology of the sub-layer was highly correlated with the electrocatalytic activity of the examined Sn-Pd electrocatalysts. The high activity it presented towards the EOR showed the suitability of the Sn-Pd electrocatalyst constructed from individual fern-like Sn dendrites as a sub-layer. Compared to Pd alone, this Sn-Pd catalyst showed more than 3 times higher activity and improved EOR kinetics. This enhancement in the catalytic activity of the Sn-Pd electrocatalysts is attributed to both the morphological characteristics of Sn as a sub-layer and the bifunctional effect.

AB - Sn-Pd electrocatalysts convenient for a possible application in direct ethanol fuel cell were produced by two electrochemical deposition method. In the first step, Sn dendrites of various degree of ramification were electrodeposited by potentiostatically on cathodic potentials of –1200, –1400, –1600 and –1800 mV vs. Ag/AgCl. Electrodeposition of tin was performed from 20 g/l SnCl2 × 2H2O in 250 g/l NaOH electrolyte [1] at the room temperature on Cu electrodes. In the second step, Pd was electrodeposited galvanostatically at a current density of –5 mA cm-2 on the electrodes with electrodeposited Sn dendrites. Electrodeposition of Pd was performed from 1 M NH4Cl and 0.01 M PdCl2 at the room temperature [2]. The processes of electrochemical deposition of Sn and Pd were performed with amounts of the electricity of 400 and 267 mC, giving an atomic ratio synthesized the electrocatalysts of 60 at.% Sn‒40 at.% Pd. Morpological and elemental analysis of the Sn-Pd electrocatalysts was performed by scanning electron microscope (SEM) and energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDS), respectively. The particle size distribution (PSD) was used to estimate a size of Sn dendrites. The electrocatalytic activity of synthesized Sn-Pd electrocatalysts towards ethanol oxidation reaction (EOR) was examined by cyclic voltammetry (CV) and chronoamperometry, using 1 M NaOH with 1 M ethanol solution. Depending on the applied cathodic potentials, the following shapes of dendrites were formed: the needle-like and the spear-like at –1200 mV, an individual fern-like dendrites at –1400 mV, and intertwined network of dendrites of the fern-like shape was formed at cathodic potentials of – 1600 and – 1800 mV vs. Ag/AgCl. The partial coverage of the Sn dendrites through a formation of compact islands of Pd was attained by electrodeposition of Pd on the electrodes with the Sn dendrites. It was shown that morphology of the Sn dendrites as sub-layer strongly correlates the electrocatalytic activity of the Sn-Pd electrocatalysts. The largest electrocatalytic activity showed the Sn- Pd electrocatalyst constructed from the individual fern-like Sn dendrites as sub-layer produced at a cathodic potential of –1400 mV vs. Ag/AgCl. This dendrite type showed more branchy morphology than those obtained at the other cathodic potentials. Formation of individual needle-like and spear-like dendrites at a cathodic potential of – 1200 mV vs. Ag/AgCl did not contribute significantly to the increase of the initial electrode surface area. On the other hand, due to a high nucleation rate, growth a dendrites from one nucleation centre in more directions, as well as the fact that Sn is very soft metal, morphological characteristics of intertwined Sn dendrites obtained at cathodic potentials of −1600 and −1800 mV vs. Ag/AgCl approached to those of compact massive Sn. The partial coverage of Sn dendrites by Pd can be attributed to the current density distribution effect, because Pd electrodeposition process preferentially perfomed at the higher parts of the surface area, i.e. on the dendrites, rather than on the flat part of the electrode surface area. Aside from an influence of degree of branchy of Sn dendrites as sub-layer on the electrocatalytic activity in ethanol oxidation, varios electrocatalytic performance of the Sn-Pd electrocatalysts can also be ascribed to the bifunctional effect.

AB - The aim of this work is in situ anodization/anaphoretic deposition of a nano amorphous calcium phosphate (ACP)/chitosan oligosaccharide lactate (ChOL) multifunctional hybrid coating decorated with selenium (Se) on a titanium substrate and in vivo investigation of its immunomodulatory and anti-inflammatory effect. Investigating phenomena at the implant–tissue interface of interest for controlled inflammation and immunomodulation was also the aim of the research. In our earlier research, we designed coatings based on ACP and ChOL on titanium with anticorrosive, antibacterial and biocompatible properties, while in the presented results we show that selenium addition makes this coating an immunomodulator. The immunomodulatory effect of the novel hybrid coating is characterized by the examination of the functional aspects in the tissue around the implant (in vivo): proinflammatory cytokines’ gene expression, M1 (iNOS) and M2 (Arg1) macrophages, fibrous capsule formation (TGF-β) and vascularization (VEGF). The EDS, FTIR and XRD analyses prove the formation of a ACP/ChOL/Se multifunctional hybrid coating on Ti and the presence of Se. A higher M2/M1 macrophage ratio in the ACP/ChOL/Se-coated implants compared to pure titanium implants (a higher level of Arg1 expression) is noted at all time points examined (after 7, 14 and 28 days). Lower inflammation measured by gene expression of proinflammatory cytokines IL-1β and TNF, lower expression of TGF-β in the surrounding tissue and higher IL-6 expression (solely at day 7 post-implantation) is noted in presence of the ACP/ChOL/Se-coated implants.

AB - In this study, the structure, morphology and composition of the synthesized magnetite/3D-printed wollastonite (3D_W/M) composite were characterized, and its adsorption performance with respect to As(V) and Cr(VI) were studied. Magnetite (MG) modified 3D printed wollastonite was obtained by two step procedure: modification of 3D_W with 3-aminoproylsilane (APTES) followed by controlled magnetite (MG) deposition to obtain 3D_W/M adsorbent. The structure/properties of 3D_W/M were confirmed by applying FTIR, XRD, TGD/DTA, and SEM analysis. The adsorption properties of hybrid adsorbents were carried out for As(V) and Cr(VI) removal-one relative to the initial pH value, the adsorbent mass, the temperature, and the adsorption time. Time-dependent adsorption study was best described by pseudo-second order equation, while Weber Morris analysis showed that intraparticle diffusion controled diffusional transport. Similar activation energy, 17.44 and 14.49 kJ•mol-1 for adsorption As(V) and Cr(VI) on 3D_W/M, respectively, indicated main contribution of physical adsorption. Determination of adsorption parameters was performed by applying different adsorption isotherm models, and the best fit was obtained using Freundlich model. The adsorption capacity of 24.16 and 29.6 mg g-1 for As(V) and Cr(VI) at 2o C, Co = 5.5 and 5.3 mg L-1, respectively, were obtained. Thermodynamic study indicated favourable process at a higher temperature. Preliminary fixed-bed column study and results fitting with Bohart-Adams, Yoon-Nelson, Thomas, and Modified dose-response model showed good agreement with results from the batch study.

abstract = "In this study, the structure, morphology and composition of the synthesized magnetite/3D-printed wollastonite (3D_W/M) composite were characterized, and its adsorption performance with respect to As(V) and Cr(VI) were studied. AB - The aim of this study was to investigate covalent immobilization of horseradish peroxidase (HRP) on magnetic nanoparticles (Mag) encapsulated in calcium alginate beads (MABs) for color degradation, combining easy and fast removal of biocatalyst from the reaction mixture due to its magnetic properties and strong binding due to surface alginate functional groups. MABs obtained by extrusion techniques were analyzed by optical microscopy, FEG-SEM and characterized regarding mechanical properties, magnetization and HRP binding. HRP with initial concentration of 10 mg/gcarrier was successfully covalently bonded on MABs (diameter ~1 mm, magnetite/alginate ratio 1:4), with protein loading of 8.9 mg/gcarrier, immobilization yield 96.9% and activity 32.8 U/g. Immobilized HRP on MABs (HRP-MABs) was then used to catalyze degradation of two anthraquinonic dyes, Acid Blue 225 (AB225) and Acid Violet 109 (AV109), as models for wastewater pollutants. HRP-MABs decolorized 77.3% and 76.1% of AV109 and AB225, respectively after 15 min under optimal conditions (0.097 mM H2O2, 200 mg of HRP-MABs (8.9 mg/gcarrier), 0.08 and 0.1 g/mg beads/dye ratio for AV109 and AB225, respectively). Biocatalyst was used for 7 repeated cycles retaining 75% and 51% of initial activity for AB225 and AV109, respectively, showing potential for use in large scale applications for colored wastewater treatment.

AB - Hazelnut shell ash was investigated as a new base catalyst for the transesterification of used cooking sunflower oil to biodiesel. To understand its catalytic properties, the prepared ash was characterized by EDX, XRD, TGA/DTA, Hg porosimetry, N2 physisorption, FE-SEM, and basic strength measurements. The effects of the catalyst loading in the range of 1–5% of the oil weight and the methanol-to-oil molar ratio of 6:1–18:1 on the kinetics of the fatty acid methyl esters synthesis were established. Moreover, the leaching and reusability of the catalyst were assessed. The obtained results revealed that hazelnut shell ash was mostly composed of K, Ca, and Mg. The highest ester content (98%) was achieved at the catalyst loading of 5%, the methanol-to-oil molar ratio of 12:1, and the reaction time of 10 min. The contribution of homogeneous catalysis because of the catalyst leaching was confirmed but did not determine the overall reaction rate. The catalyst can be reused after the recalcination at 800 °C for 2 h achieving the high methyl esters content (>96%) in 30 min after three subsequent runs. The overall reaction followed the pseudo-first-order kinetics with respect to triacylglycerols. A linear relationship between the apparent reaction rate constant and the catalyst loading and the methanol-to-oil molar ratio was determined. The determined value of the reaction rate constant was 0.0576 dm6/(min•mol2).

AB - This paper deals with the deposition of calcium phosphate and hybrid coatings based on calcium phosphate ceramics on titanium with improved properties by in situ anodization/anaphoretic deposition process. Hybrid coatings consisted of chitosan oligolactate (ChOL) and ChOL with Se as immunomodulatory oligoelement. The paper contributes to solving the problem of multi-stage pre-treatment and post-treatment of titanium and oxidized titanium surface to obtain a coating on the substrate, adhesion of the coating, antimicrobial and cytotoxic properties that occur in biomaterials, as well as reduced immune inflammatory response of the organism. The in situ method results in improved adhesion bioactive coating, increased bioactivity and biocompatibility with increased antimicrobial properties and absence of cytotoxicity. The studied biomaterials have improved properties such as: corrosion resistance, absence of toxicity to the human body and adequate strength, which enables their potential use in medicine and dentistry. The innovation is reflected in combining calcium phosphate coating synthesis and surface modification by partially incorporating a ceramic coating into the crystalline structure of the substrate. The characterization of the coatings obtained in this manner was performed by various physico-chemical, biochemical and biological methods. These characterization techniques included: FE-SEM, XRD, FTIR, cytotoxicity and in vivo testing.

AB - This paper deals with the issue of defining a new method of anodizing/anaphoretic deposition for the application of calcium phosphate and hybrid coatings based on calcium phosphate ceramics on titanium and anodized titanium coatings with improved properties. Hybrid coatings consisted of chitosan oligolactate (ChOL) and ChOL with Se as immunomodulatory oligoelement. The paper contributes to solving the problem of multi-stage pre-treatment and posttreatment of titanium and oxidized titanium surface to obtain a coating on the substrate, adhesion of the coating, antimicrobial and cytotoxic properties that occur in biomaterials, as well as reduced immune inflammatory response of the organism. It primarily deals with the creation and optimization of a new in situ anodizing/anaphoretic deposition process for obtaining multifunctional composite biomaterials. The aim of the research was to define new in situ anodizing/anaphoretic deposition process and adequate modification of process parameters for application of composite calcium phosphate coatings on titanium and its alloys, wherein innovation is reflected in combining calcium phosphate coating synthesis and surface modification by partially incorporating a ceramic coating into the crystalline structure of the substrate. The characterization of the coatings obtained in this manner was performed by various physico-chemical, biochemical and biological methods. These characterization techniques included: AFM, SEM, FE-SEM, roughness testing, XRD, FTIR, bioactivity, biocompatibility, cytotoxicity, antimicrobial activity and in vivo testing.

AB - The development of carbon materials with desirable textures and new aqueous electrolytes is the key strategy to improve the performance of supercapacitors. Herein, a deep eutectic solvent (DES) was used for in situ templating of a carbon material. A carbon material was characterized (XRD, N2-physisorption, FTIR, SEM and EDS) and used as an electrode material for the first time in multivalent-based supercapacitors. In situ templating of carbon was performed using a novel DES, which serves as a precursor for carbon and for in situ generation of MgO. The generation of MgO and its roles in templating of carbon were discussed. Templating of carbon with MgO lead to an increase in surface area and a microporous texture. The obtained carbon was tested in multivalent-ion (Al3+ and Mg2+) electrolytes and compared with H2SO4. The charge-storage mechanism was investigated and elaborated. The highest specific capacitance was obtained for the Al(NO3)3 electrolyte, while the operating voltage follows the order: Mg(NO3)2 > Al(NO3)3 > H2SO4. Electrical double-layer capacitance (versus pseudocapacitance) was dominant in all investigated electrolytes. The larger operating voltage in multivalent electrolytes is a consequence of the lower fraction of free water, which suppresses hydrogen evolution (when compared with H2SO4). The GCD was experimentally performed on the Al(NO3)3 electrolyte, which showed good cyclic stability, with an energy density of 22.3 Wh kg−1 at 65 W kg−1.

AB - Nickel manganite nanocrystalline fibers were obtained by electrospinning and subsequent calcination at 400 °C. As-spun fibers were characterized by TG/DTA, Scanning Electron Microscopy and FT-IR spectroscopy analysis. X-ray diffraction and FT-IR spectroscopy analysis confirmed the formation of nickel manganite with a cubic spinel structure, while N2 physisorption at 77 K enabled determination of the BET specific surface area as 25.3 m2/g and (BJH) mesopore volume as 21.5 m2/g. The material constant (B) of the nanocrystalline nickel manganite fibers applied by drop-casting on test interdigitated electrodes on alumina substrate, dried at room temperature, was determined as 4379 K in the 20–50 °C temperature range and a temperature sensitivity of −4.95%/K at room temperature (25 °C). The change of impedance with relative humidity was monitored at 25 and 50 °C for a relative humidity (RH) change of 40 to 90% in the 42 Hzπ1 MHz frequency range. At 100 Hz and 25 °C, the sensitivity of 327.36 ± 80.12 kΩ/%RH was determined, showing that nickel manganite obtained by electrospinning has potential as a multifunctional material for combined humidity and temperature sensing.

AB - Monitoring the occurrence and rate of corrosion, the formation of thermal oxides on the surface of metal parts of the power plant, as well as the method of their elimination in a way that is technologically suitable, economically affordable and environmentally justified is shown in this technical solution. It has been established that the metal elements affected by corrosion were made from stainless steel AISI 304. Accordingly, the occurrence of corrosion and thermal oxides was monitored based on the material and the composition of the dust with which the metal parts are in contact. The emergence of thermal oxides on the surface of stainless steels is a consequence of the elevated temperature at the welding site.
The pH value of both solutions was measured: standard and saturated solution of dust from the plant. The composition of the dust samples was determined by FTIR. The other tests were defined based on the ions present in the solution.
The corrosion potential, the value of the polarization resistance, as well as the corrosion current density were determined. All tests of stainless steel in the standard solution and in the saturated solution of dust were performed for one hour within a span of 25 days.

Rešenje je prodato naručuicu u toku 2020.godine, a od januara 2021.godine primenjeno u postrojenju naručioca, ELNOS BL d.o.o., koji su izjavom potvrdili primenu ovog tehničkog rešenja u svom poslovanju., Monitoring the occurrence and rate of corrosion, the formation of thermal oxides on the surface of metal parts of the power plant, as well as the method of their elimination in a way that is technologically suitable, economically affordable and environmentally justified is shown in this technical solution.
Technological recommendations on how to eliminate corrosion and thermal oxides are provided.

AB - Cathodic material for sodium-ion rechargeable batteries based on NaxMnO2 were synthesized by glycine nitrate method and subsequent annealing at high temperatures. Different crystal structures with different morphologies were obtained depending on the annealing temperature: hexagonal layeredα-Na0.7MnO2.05 nanoplates were obtained at 850 °C, while 3-D tunnel structured Na0·4MnO2 and Na0·44MnO2, both with rod-like morphology, were obtained at 800 °C and 900 °C, respectively. The investigations of the electrochemical behavior of obtained cathodic materials in aqueous NaNO3 solution have shown that Na0·44MnO2 obtained at 900 °C has shown the best battery performance. Its initial discharge capacities are 123.5 mA h/g, 113.2 mA h/g, and 102.0 mA h/g at the high current densities of 1000, 2000 and 5000 mA/g, respectively.

AB - In the past century, the use of polymers and composites with a polymer matrix has expanded to such a level that today it is impossible to imagine life without these materials. Epoxy resin and epoxy-based composites are widely used as construction materials, due to their excellent adhesion, thermal and chemical stability. Fractal nature analysis can provide insight in morphological changes at fiber-matrix interface level, which could give direction for the processing of composites. This mathematical technique can be performed on field emission scanning electron microscopy (FESEM) images, by identifying fiber phase and pores shapes and boundaries, as well as fiber-matrix bonding at the interface. In this study, fiberglass mat was used for the reinforcement of epoxy. FESEM image of enlarged fiber after the composite fracture was used for the reconstruction of data. With the use of affine fractal regression model, software Fractal Real Finder was employed for the reconstruction of fiber shape and the determination of Hausdorff dimension.

AB - Polymer matrix composites (PMCs) are very attractive materials due to a possibility to achieve versatile properties by combining with ceramic or metal reinforcement in different shapes and sizes. As a result, PMCs have found application in nearly every field, from household appliances to aerospace industry. Modern microelectronic devices contain conductive polymers with fillers that enhance their electrical properties. In addition, PMCs are being used as insulators and adhesives, contributing to the long life of electronic devices. Epoxy resins are the most commonly used insulators and adhesives. In order to improve their fracture toughness, glass fibers can be used as an efficient reinforcement. However, with the purpose of designing a composite with good mechanical properties and durability, deep knowledge of microstructure is required. In addition, microstructural analysis can be used to connect shape and size of pores or reinforcement with various physical properties. Fractal nature analysis is a valuable mathematical tool that can be employed for different shapes and forms rendering. In this manner, successful design and prediction of composite’s properties could be obtained. In this research, field emission scanning electron microscopy (FESEM) images were used for fractal analysis of glass fibers, with the aim of reconstructing the shape.

AB - Solid-state reaction between BaTiO3 and Fe2O3 was used to produce a multiferroic heterostructure composite. Commercial BaTiO3 and Fe(NO3)3•9H2O were suspended in ethanol for 30 minutes in an ultrasound bath. The prepared mixture was thermally processed at 300 oC for 6 h. Sintering at 1300 oC for 1 h resulted in a mixture of different phases, BaTiO3, BaFe12O19 and Ba12Ti28Fe15O84, which were confirmed by x-ray powder diffraction. A dense microstructure with a small volume fraction of closed porosity was indicated by the scanning electron microscopy, while a homogeneous distribution of Fe ions over BaTiO3 phase was visible from energy dispersive spectroscopy mapping. Doping of BaTiO3 with Fe2O3 resulted in formation of magnetic hexaferrite phases, as confirmed by dielectric measurements that showed a broadened maximum of the permittivity measured as a function of temperature.

AB - To investigate the magnetic behavior of starch-coated cobalt ferrites, well-established synthetic methods, i.e., coprecipitation, mechanochemical, ultrasonically assisted coprecipitation, microemulsion, and microwave-assisted hydrothermal syntheses were chosen for their preparation. The obtained materials had pure single-phase spinel structures. Scanning and transmission electron microscopy analyses revealed that the morphology of the samples is not uniform, and particle aggregation is a dominant process. Fourier transform infrared spectra and thermogravimetric analysis confirmed the presence of starch in all–coated samples. The unusually higher saturation magnetization of starch-coated samples than their as-prepared analogs, obtained by coprecipitation, ultrasonically assisted coprecipitation, and microwave-assisted hydrothermal methods, might be explained by the Ostwald ripening mechanism induced by the coating process. A decrease in magnetization was noticed for the starch-functionalized nanomaterials synthesized by mechanochemical and microemulsion methods, in comparison to their as-prepared analogs, i.e., the size distribution of such nanoparticles is narrow, and the average diameter of the grains is near critical for the Ostwald ripening process.

AB - The mechanical activation of the starting mixtures of cordierite (2MgO*2Al2O3*5SiO2) with 5.00 mass % TiO2 was performed in a high energy ball mill during 10-80 min. The applied compaction pressure before the sintering process was 2t/cm2. The sintering process was performed at 1350°C for 2h and 4h in air atmosphere. Scanning electron microscopy was performed to analyze the microstructure of both compacted and sintered samples. Atomic force microscope was used to investigate the surface of the sintered samples. This paper investigates the influence of prolonged sintering time on the densities of the sintered samples, along with electrical properties.

AB - In order to improve the interpretation of measurement results and to achieve the optimal performance of microfluidic biosensors, advanced mathematical models of their time response and noise are needed. The random nature of adsorption–desorption and mass transfer (MT) processes that generate the sensor response makes the sensor output signal inherently stochastic and necessitates the use of a stochastic approach in sensor response analysis. We present a stochastic model of the sensor time response, which takes into account the coupling of adsorption–desorption and MT processes. It is used for the analysis of response kinetics and ultimate noise performance of protein biosensors. We show that slow MT not only decelerates the response kinetics, but also increases the noise and decreases the sensor’s maximal achievable signal-to-noise ratio, thus degrading the ultimate sensor performance, including the minimal detectable/quantifiable analyte concentration. The results illustrate the significance of the presented model for the correct interpretation of measurement data, for the estimation of sensors’ noise performance metrics important for reliable analyte detection/quantification, as well as for sensor optimization in terms of the lower detection/quantification limit. They are also incentives for the further investigation of the MT influence in nanoscale sensors, as a possible cause of false-negative results in analyte detection experiments.

AB - The cytotoxicity of amorphous calcium phosphate (ACP) and chitosan lactate (ChOL) multifunctional and hybrid composite coatings on MRC-5 human lung fibroblast cell line was elucidated. ACP/TiO2 and ACP/TiO2/ /ChOL were deposited onto Ti by a novel in situ anodization/anaphoretic process at constant voltage. Cytotoxicity tests showed that there was no significant decrease in the survival of healthy MRC-5 cells exposed to composite samples without chitosan lactate, while there was an increase in the number of viable cells in the sample containing ChOL. These findings show that there was improved cell proliferation, differentiation and cell viability in the ChOL-containing sample, which makes ACP/TiO2/ChOL coating a good candidate for applications in medicine and stomatology.
