AB - Primary seawater magnesium-based cell with AgCl or PbCl2 cathodes is widely used as power sources. In this paper, we consider the cyclic galvanostatic formation of silver and lead chlorides and their electrochemical behavior for potential applications in the new concept of the seawater quasi-rechargeable magnesium cell. For potential cells, the voltage for Mg alloy AZ63 and AgCl is ~ 1.5 V, and for the PbCl2, ~ 1 V. High discharge specific capacity, energy, and power are obtained under the very high discharge rate. It is also presented that systems could be potentially used in emergency situations for a few days up to a few weeks as a power source in the life-saving boat for sporadic emitting GPS-SOS tacking signals and night signal lights.

AB - In this study, we report the influence of vanadium oxide (VO), as a photosensitive component, on the photoactivity of TiO2 nanotubes (TNTs). A series of TNTs of varying tube diameter were synthesized by the anodization of titanium foils at different voltages, while vanadium oxide was deposited on TNTs by wet chemical deposition. An improvement in the optical properties of nanotubes was observed after the deposition of vanadium oxide. An improvement in the optical properties (redshift in UV-Vis spectra) of TNTs and TNT/VO was noted. The photocatalytic activity was improved with increasing tube diameter, while it was weakened after the deposition of VO. Furthermore, photoactivity was investigated in photodiodes based on TNTs or TNT/VO and single crystals of CH3NH3PbI3. The photoelectric measurement revealed that different TNT diameters did not influence the I-V characteristic of the photodiodes, while the deposition of VO improved the photocurrent for smaller TNTs.

AB - The crystal growth rate of LiGe2(PO4)3 phase from lithium germanium-phosphate glass was studied. The glass have been homogenized using the previously established temperature-time conditions, which make it possible to remove volatile substances from the glass melt. The atomic absorption spectrophotometry (AAS) was used to determine the chemical content of the obtained glass and scanning electron microscope (SEM) were used to reveal the isothermal process of crystal growth. The crystal growth rates were determined experimentally and theoretically.

AB - Poly(vinylidenefluoride)–ZnO (PVDF–ZnO) nanocomposites with mechanically activated ZnO nanoparticle fillers were investigated using thermal and mechanical analysis and AFM and PFM. Differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) investigated the effect of ZnO nanoparticles on the crystallinity of the polymer, under controlled heating and cooling. Atomic force (AFM) microscopy was used to record the surfaces of the samples. Nanocomposite surface roughness shows the presence of the different phases inside of the matrix, where rough samples contain a higher proportion of the β phase. PFM was performed to investigate the piezoresponse of the composites. Nanoidentation showed that the mechanical activation of the filler (ZnO) increases the Young modulus with the activation time. Molecular simulations in periodic systems (PVDF–ZnO spherical nanocluster and nanocylinder composite) were used to investigate the influence of particle size and shape on the Young modulus of different phases of PVDF.

AB - Alkali activated slag (AAS) is an environmentally friendly material which were extensively investigated in a pass two decade. Currently, these materials are considering as an effective alternative for cement binder. Process of slag alkali activation involves a chemical reaction between solid calcium aluminosilicate materials and a highly alkaline activator. The alkali activation mechanism of slag consists of the slag dissolution in a highly alkaline which is followed by the condensation and hardening processes yielding formation of calcium (alumina) silicate hydrate C– (A)–S–H gel as a reaction product of slag alkali activation. Properties of these materials primarily depends on the choice of solid row materials. Primarily, granulated blast furnace slag, by product of iron production) is considering as a precursor for AAS synthesis. However, an important shift towards the use of steelmaking slag is also observed. Although electric arc furnace slag has already found its application mainly in civil engineering, this investigation has aimed to investigate properties of AAS prepared using the electric arc furnace slag (EAFS) with an emphasize with different possibilities of its application. Characterization of AAS involved XRDP, SEM/EDS and pore size analysis with the aim to build up a detailed illustration of AAS from the stand point of different application.

AB - The organo-inorganic perovskites are extraordinary materials that have recently revolutionized the field of photovoltaics due to their low-cost fabrication and high optical absorption. In a short period, they reached great efficiency. Many parameters which affect the quality of perovskite films can be optimized, so the efficiency of these devices can be further improved. In perovskite solar cells, the perovskite layer is an active layer that absorbs the visible part of the spectrum, resulting in the formation of the electron-hole pair. To decrease the recombination of charge carriers, the construction of solar cells requires the existence of two additional layers in order to separate the holes and electrons. TiO2 could be used as an electron transport layer because its conduction band (CB) lies under the CB of perovskite. In that way, electrons diffuse from CB of perovskite to CB of TiO2. For these experiments, TiO2 nanotubular structure provides a one-dimensional transmission channel for the charge carriers, which resulting in faster carrier transport. Perovskite methylammonium lead bromide (MAPbBr3) was coupled with TiO2 nanotube arrays which were synthesized by anodization of Ti foil and annealed at 450 °C. The most used methods for deposition of perovskite materials on mesoporous and planar TiO2 are: one-step deposition, two-step sequential deposition, and vapor-assisted solution processing. Disadvantage of these methods is a small contact area between TiO2 and perovskite. The aim of this research was to increase the contact surface of the perovskite and TiO2 nanotubes by filling the nanotubes with the perovskite material in order to improve electron transport.

AB - In this work, corrosion behavior of cooper in corrosion media consisted of aerated aqueous electrolyte of 3% NaCl with addition of different amount of cynarae extract as green corrosion inhibitor, is presented. Techniques used in this study involved open circuit measurements, evaluation of charge transfer resistance and corrosion current density during exposure to corrosion environment. Also, electrochemical impedance spectroscopy measurements are presented. Potentiodymamic polarization curves were also used for the evaluation of the corrosion current density and corrosion potential of coper in corrosion media. Based on these results, it was concluded that the satisfactory results of corrosion inhibition exceeding 70 % were obtained with small amount of only 37*10-2 of mas. % of cynarae extract, based on open circuit behavior which involved decrease of the open circuit potentials of copper in the presence of cynarae extract it was concluded that this extract served as cathodic inhibitor.

AB - Intrinsically conducting polymers, especially polyaniline (PANI), are widely investigated in the field of energy storage and conversion due to the highly reversible electrochemistry of doping/dedoping. These reactions are responsible for PANI’s high capacitance, often reported as pseudocapacitance. In this work, PANI electrodes were obtained by electrochemical polymerization of aniline monomer, with different polymerization charges ranging between 0.125 and 1.0 mA cm-2, on a graphite electrode, at the constant current density of 2.0 mA cm-2. The electrolyte used in this study consisted of 1.0 mol dm-3 H2SO4 and 0.2 mol dm-3 aniline. Electrochemical characterization of the PANI electrode involved cyclic voltammetry, chronopotentiometric charge/discharge and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy at constant potentials. Specific capacitance was determined from these techniques following the procedure for pseudocapacitive electrodes. After 250 cycles of charge/discharge with the current density of 10 mA cm-2, only 7 % of the capacitance was lost, indicating good stability of PANI that likely originates from its structure comprising a shared divalent sulfate ion between two monomer units.
AB - Elektroprovodni polimeri, prvenstveno polianilin (PANI), su intenzivno proučavani u oblasti konverzije i skladištenja električne energije, zahvaljujući visokoj reverzibilnosti reakcije dopovanja/dedopovanje.

AB - Electrochemical synthesis of poly(aniline-co-(sulfanilic acid)) was performed on a graphite electrode with constant current densities from an aqueous electrolyte containing 1.0 mol dm-3 H2SO4 and 0.25 mol dm-3 monomers with different ratios of aniline and sulfanilic acid. Optimal conditions for copolymerization were set to the current density of 0.75 mA cm-2 and the electrolyte containing 0.15 mol dm-3 aniline and 0.10 mol dm-3 sulfanilic acid. Electrochemical characterization of the poly(aniline-co-(sulfanilic acid)) electrode was performed using cyclic voltammetry and galvanostatic charge/discharge techniques. Electrical properties such as specific power and specific energy at different discharge currents were also determined. Based on the Ragon plot, it was observed that the poly(aniline-co-(sulfanilic acid)) electrode exhibited battery features at low discharge currents. In contrast, it was possible to achieve specific power of supercapacitors at high discharge currents. Moreover, after 4000 cycles of charge/discharge poly(aniline-co-(sulfanilic acid)), capacity retention exceeding 90 % was obtained.

abstract = "Electrochemical synthesis of poly(aniline-co-(sulfanilic acid)) was performed on a graphite electrode with constant current densities from an aqueous electrolyte containing 1.0 mol dm-3 H2SO4 and 0.25 mol dm-3 monomers with different ratios of aniline and sulfanilic acid. Moreover, after 4000 cycles of charge/discharge poly(aniline-co-(sulfanilic acid)), capacity retention exceeding 90 % was obtained., Elektrohemijska kopolimerizacija anilina i sulfanilne kiseline ostvarena je u galvanostatskim uslovima različitim gustinama struje na grafitnoj elektrodi.

AB - Polyaniline (PANI), due to its highly reversible electrochemistry with superior energy storage and delivery characteristics, is considered as an electrode material in batteries, capacitors, and hybrid systems. We used a facile electrochemical synthesis for the formation of the PANI electrode using galvanostatic polymerization of aniline on the graphite electrode at the current density of 2.0 mA cm−2 from the aqueous electrolyte containing 0.25 mol dm−3 aniline and 1.0 mol dm−3 H2SO4. Electrochemical and electrical characterization suggested excellent energy storage features of the PANI electrode in a three-electrode system with specific energy up to 53 Wh kg−1 and specific power up to 7600 W kg−1. After 2000 successive charge/discharge cycles at 9.5 Ag−1, the PANI electrode retained 95% of the initial capacity, with practically unaltered Coulombic efficiency of nearly 98%, providing a good base for future studies and practical applications.

AB - In this study, the structure, morphology and composition of the synthesized magnetite/3D-printed wollastonite (3D_W/M) composite were characterized, and its adsorption performance with respect to As(V) and Cr(VI) were studied. Magnetite (MG) modified 3D printed wollastonite was obtained by two step procedure: modification of 3D_W with 3-aminoproylsilane (APTES) followed by controlled magnetite (MG) deposition to obtain 3D_W/M adsorbent. The structure/properties of 3D_W/M were confirmed by applying FTIR, XRD, TGD/DTA, and SEM analysis. The adsorption properties of hybrid adsorbents were carried out for As(V) and Cr(VI) removal-one relative to the initial pH value, the adsorbent mass, the temperature, and the adsorption time. Time-dependent adsorption study was best described by pseudo-second order equation, while Weber Morris analysis showed that intraparticle diffusion controled diffusional transport. Similar activation energy, 17.44 and 14.49 kJ•mol-1 for adsorption As(V) and Cr(VI) on 3D_W/M, respectively, indicated main contribution of physical adsorption. Determination of adsorption parameters was performed by applying different adsorption isotherm models, and the best fit was obtained using Freundlich model. The adsorption capacity of 24.16 and 29.6 mg g-1 for As(V) and Cr(VI) at 2o C, Co = 5.5 and 5.3 mg L-1, respectively, were obtained. Thermodynamic study indicated favourable process at a higher temperature. Preliminary fixed-bed column study and results fitting with Bohart-Adams, Yoon-Nelson, Thomas, and Modified dose-response model showed good agreement with results from the batch study.

AB - The aim of this study was to investigate covalent immobilization of horseradish peroxidase (HRP) on magnetic nanoparticles (Mag) encapsulated in calcium alginate beads (MABs) for color degradation, combining easy and fast removal of biocatalyst from the reaction mixture due to its magnetic properties and strong binding due to surface alginate functional groups. MABs obtained by extrusion techniques were analyzed by optical microscopy, FEG-SEM and characterized regarding mechanical properties, magnetization and HRP binding. HRP with initial concentration of 10 mg/gcarrier was successfully covalently bonded on MABs (diameter ~1 mm, magnetite/alginate ratio 1:4), with protein loading of 8.9 mg/gcarrier, immobilization yield 96.9% and activity 32.8 U/g. Immobilized HRP on MABs (HRP-MABs) was then used to catalyze degradation of two anthraquinonic dyes, Acid Blue 225 (AB225) and Acid Violet 109 (AV109), as models for wastewater pollutants. HRP-MABs decolorized 77.3% and 76.1% of AV109 and AB225, respectively after 15 min under optimal conditions (0.097 mM H2O2, 200 mg of HRP-MABs (8.9 mg/gcarrier), 0.08 and 0.1 g/mg beads/dye ratio for AV109 and AB225, respectively). Biocatalyst was used for 7 repeated cycles retaining 75% and 51% of initial activity for AB225 and AV109, respectively, showing potential for use in large scale applications for colored wastewater treatment.

AB - The initial corrosion behavior of AZ63 magnesium alloy was investigated in 1, 3, 5 and 7 wt.% NaCl solutions by means of corrosion potential, linear polarization, electrochemical impedance spectroscopy, and polarization measurements, during exposure in the corrosion media. Results show that the increase in chloride concentration provokes an increase in the corrosion rate. Based on the obtained kinetics parameters the mechanisms of anodic dissolution and hydrogen evolution reactions were discussed, and kinetic models were proposed. It is concluded that anodic dissolution proceeds under Temkin conditions and hydrogen evolution reaction depends on the surface coverage of Mg(OH)2 species.

AB - Pure Ti films deposited by radio-frequency magnetron sputtering on FTO glass were anodized to fabricate TiO2 nanotubes (NTs) arrays. The TiO2 NTs/FTO samples were sintered at 450, 550 and 630°C, in ambient air. The thermal treatment did not influence the crystal phase composition, preserving in all cases the anatase single phase. As expected, the crystalline anatase quality improved with the annealing temperature. Nevertheless, slight differences in nanotubular morphology, such as the appearance of grains inside the walls, were observed in the case of the sample sintered at 630°C. Chemical analysis by X-ray Photoelectron Spectroscopy of annealed samples revealed the presence of Sn inside TiO2 NTs, due to diffusion of Sn from the substrate to TiO2. For the substrate was used FTO glass whose top layer consists of SnO2 doped with F. Rutherford Backscattering Spectrometry and Time-of-Flight Elastic Recoil Detection Analysis were carried out to study the elemental depth profile of the films. It was found that the temperature of sintering controls the Sn diffusion inside TiO2 film. Sn atoms diffuse towards the TiO2 NTs surface for the samples annealed at 450 and 550°C. The diffusion is however hindered in the case of the heat treatment at 630°C. Besides, the Ti diffusion into the SnO2 underlayer was observed, together with the formation of TiO2/SnO2 interfaces. One then expected but not a great difference in absorption between samples, since all contained anatase phase, as confirmed by Diffuse Reflectance Spectroscopy. A higher amount of Sn was however detected for the sample annealed at 550°C, which accounts for a slight red absorption shift. The importance of controlling the annealing parameters of the anodized TiO2/FTO structures was highlighted through the formation of TiO2-SnO2 interfaces and the Sn insertion from FTO, which can play an essential role in increasing the photoperformances of TiO2 NTs/FTO based structures of photovoltaic cells.

AB - The newer methods of electric arc furnace dust (EAFD) valorisation include its stabilization into materials which potentially can be used in construction. This is the most promising method because of the low costs and waste reduction. The purpose of these study was to investigate the properties of alkali activated cement (AAC) based on fly ash (FA) or steelmaking electric arc furnace slag (EAFS) as an agent fora stabilization/solidification of EAFD. The control type of AAC samples were prepared by mixing of solid precursor (FA or EAFS) with a mixture of 10 M NaOH and Na2SiO3 solutions followed by curing at in the oven for 48 h at 65 C. The samples of AAC doped with EAFD were prepared at the same conditions but the EAFD was added to the starting mixtures with FA in quantities of 10, 20 and 30% of total solid phase and 1, 2, 5 and 7 % of total EAFS solid phase. The results have shown that both, FA and EAFS can be successfully used as an agent for EAFD stabilization. AAC samples based of FA and EAFS exhibited strength which is suitable for both, landfill and construction applications. Stabilization of EAFD into the AAC matrix occurred by chemical and physical immobilization. Chemical immobilization of Zn into the reaction product of FA and EAFS alkali activation was confirmed by SEM/EDS investigations. The leaching of Zn from both, AAC matrix based on FA and EAFS is inferior in comparison to pristine EAFD and met the criteria for granular waste disposal at landfills for non-hazardous waste according the EN 12457-2 test.

AB - The Nonlinear Laser Scanning Microscopy (NLSM) contributes to the cell labeling through addressing two main issues: photobleaching and phototoxicity. Moreover, an increase of the penetration depth and a reduction of background autofluorescence are achieved. We have used a multidisciplinary approach combining expertise in material science, nanoparticles synthesis and characterization, cancer cell and tissue labeling, and high resolution imaging, in order to accomplish in vitro imaging of the cancer cells. We have imaged the oral squamous carcinoma cells and human gingival cells. We have demonstrated that we are able to take high contrast images. We have shown position of the nanoparticles in cells, through colocalization of the cell auto-fluorescence and the nanoparticles up-conversion.We plan to improve our abilities through further optimization of the up-converting nanoparticles (smaller and brighter particles) and microscopy technique.

AB - Freeze drying was compared with spray drying regarding feasibility to process wild thyme drug in order to obtain dry formulations at laboratory scale starting from liquid extracts produced by different extraction methods: maceration, heat-, ultrasound-, and microwave-assisted extractions. Higher powder yield (based on the dry weight prior to extraction) was achieved by freeze than spray drying and lower loss of total polyphenol content (TPC) and total flavonoid content (TFC) due to the drying process. Gelatin as a coating agent (5% w/w) provided better TPC recovery by 70% in case of lyophilization and higher powder yield in case of spray drying by diminishing material deposition on the wall of the drying chamber. The resulting gelatin-free and gelatin-containing powders carried polyphenols in amount ~190 and 53-75 mg gallic acid equivalents GAE/g of powder, respectively. Microwave-assisted extract formulation distinguished from others by higher content of polyphenols, proteins and sugars, higher bulk density and lower solubility. The type of the drying process affected mainly position of the gelatin-derived -OH and amide bands in FTIR spectra. Spray dried formulations compared to freeze dried expressed higher thermal stability as confirmed by differential scanning calorimetry analysis and higher diffusion coefficient; the last feature can be associated with the lower specific surface area of irregularly shaped freeze-dried particles (151-223 µm) compared to small microspheres (~8 µm) in spray-dried powder.

AB - Four silver-based coordination polymers, {[Ag(L1)2]NO3}∞ (1), {[Ag(L1)2]ClO4}∞ (2), {[Ag(L2)2]NO3·H2O}∞ (3) and {[Ag(L2)2]ClO4}∞ (4), were synthesized using the thiomorpholine-4-carbonitrile (L1) and piperazine-1,4-dicarbonitrile (L2) ligands. Compounds 1 and 2 are two-dimensional, while 3 and 4 are three-dimensional. L1 and L2 are 1,4-bis-monodentate ligands in all compounds, while Ag(I) ions are four-coordinated in a slightly distorted tetrahedral geometry. Topological analysis in standard representations suggests that underlying nets in 1 and 2 have an sql topology, while 3 and 4 exhibit a dia topology. Thermal analysis shows that 3 loses crystalline water at room temperature, while other compounds show good thermal stability. All compounds show good photocatalytic activity for photocatalytic degradation of the mordant blue 9 dye, with reaction rates in the range 0.029 to 0.061 min−1. The best result was obtained for compound 4, which can be correlated to its largest lattice volume.

Higher total powder yield (based on the dry weight prior to extraction) was achieved by freeze than spray drying and lower loss of total polyphenol content (TPC) and total flavonoid content (TFC) due to the drying process. Gelatin as a coating agent (5% w/w) provided better TPC recovery by 70% in case of lyophilization and higher total powder yield in case of spray drying by diminishing material deposition on the wall of the drying chamber. The resulting gelatin-free and gelatin-containing powders carried polyphenols in amount ~190 and 53–75 mg gallic acid equivalents GAE/g of powder, respectively. Microwave-assisted extract formulation was distinguished from the others by a higher content of polyphenols, proteins and sugars, higher bulk density and lower solubility. AB - Magnetite (MG) modified cellulose membrane (Cell-MG), obtained by reaction of 3-aminosilane and subsequently with diethylenetriaminepentaacetic acid dianhydride functionalized waste Cell fibers (Cell-NH2 and Cell-DTPA, respectively), and amino-modified diatomite was used for Azoxystrobin and Iprodione removal from water. Cell-MG membrane was structurally and morphologically characterized using FT-IR and FE-SEM techniques. The influences of operational parameters, i.e. pH, contact time, temperature, and the mass of adsorbent on adsorption and kinetics were studied in a batch system. The calculated capacities of 35.32 and 30.16 mg g-1 for Azoxystrobin and Iprodione, respectively, were obtained from non-linear Langmuir model fitting. Weber-Morris model fitting indicates the main contribution of intra-particle diffusion to overall mass transport resistance. Thermodynamic data indicate spontaneous and endothermic adsorption. The reusability of adsorbent and results from wastewater purification showed that Cell-MG could be used as general-purpose adsorbent. The adsorbent/adsorbate surface interaction was considered from the results obtained using density functional theory (DFT) and calculation of molecular electrostatic potential (MEP). Thus, a better understanding of the relation between the adsorption performances and contribution of non-specific and specific interactions to adsorption performances and design of novel adsorbent with improved properties was deduced

abstract = "Magnetite (MG) modified cellulose membrane (Cell-MG), obtained by reaction of 3-aminosilane and subsequently with diethylenetriaminepentaacetic acid dianhydride functionalized waste Cell fibers (Cell-NH2 and Cell-DTPA, respectively), and amino-modified diatomite was used for Azoxystrobin and Iprodione removal from water. AB - Enzymatic hydrolysis of food proteins is convenient method to improve their functional properties and physiological activity. Herein, the successful covalent attachment of alcalase on alginate micron and submicron beads using the carbodiimide based chemistry reaction and the subsequent application of the beads for egg white and soy proteins hydrolysis were studied. In addition to the electrostatic extrusion technique (EE) previously used by others, the potential utilization of a novel ultrasonic spray atomization technique without drying (UA) and with drying (UAD) for alginate submicron beads production has been attempted. The immobilization parameters were optimized on microbeads obtained by EE technique (803 +/- 23 mu m) with respect to enzyme loading and alcalase activity. UA and UAD techniques resulted in much smaller particles (607 +/- 103 nm and 394 +/- 51 nm in diameter, respectively), enabling even higher enzyme loading of 671.6 +/- 4 mg g(-1) on the carrier and the highest immobilized alcalase activity of 2716.1 IU g(-1) in the standard reaction. The UAD biocatalyst exhibited also better performances in the real food system based on egg white or soy proteins. It has been shown that the immobilized alcalase can be reused in seven successive soy protein hydrolysis cycles with a little decrease in the activity.
