AB - Far infrared reflection spectra of NiO polycrystals sintered at 1100 °C for various times (30–240 min) were measured at room temperature using a FTIR Spectrometer—Brucker 113V. The measured spectra depended on the sintering time due to differences in the microstructural morphology of the material and were compared with the NiO single crystal reflectivity diagram. Numerical analyses of the experimental spectra were performed using Kramers-Kronig analysis, a four-parameter model of coupled oscillators and the effective medium modeling theory. In the three-component effective medium model based on Bruggeman's theory we assumed the presence of pores, intergranular material and crystalline grains. The intergranular material and crystalline grains were defined as single and coupled ionic oscillators.

AB - Ceramic materials with a perovskite related structures such as non-doped and doped barium titanate ceramics are attracting much interest for their application as capacitor dielectrics, resistors, thermal sensors, etc. Since mechanical activation can be used in order to modify properties of these materials, in this study microstructure evolution and electric properties of mechanically activated BaTiO3 have been analyzed. The sintering process of high purity non-doped mechanically activated BaTiO3 was monitored using a sensitive dilatometer with a heating rate of 10 degrees C/min. Investigation of the microstructure evolution of mechanically activated BaTiO3 was performed using scanning electron microscope (SEM) and digital pattern recognition (DPR) methods. A dielectric study of the paraelectric-ferroelectric phase transition in the barium titanate ceramics was performed by recording the temperature dependence of dielectric permittivity.

AB - Opportunities for the synthesis of ultrafine spherical particles with uniformly distributed components and phases are of special importance when materials for photonic application are considered. In this study, the nanophase, spherical, luminescent polycrystalline and YAG:Ce particles were synthesized from aerosols of the corresponding nitrate solutions ultrasonically generated with frequencies of and , respectively. Detailed phase and structural analysis, compositional homogeneity, and particle morphology were determined in accordance to X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), and energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDS). Quantitative SEM/EDS analysis indicated high material purity and compositional homogeneity. The phase development and structural changes imply nanocrystalline inner structure (crystallites below after thermal treating), which influences luminescence behavior. Luminescence measurements indicate that both the radioluminescence and thermoluminescence emission spectra of the are totally dominated by the line emission characteristic of the Eu, fully substituted onto host lattice sites. By contrast, the cerium dopants in YAG display only very weak Ce luminescence after annealing, but there are broad emission bands characteristic of host lattice defect sites. The spectra are clearly altered by heat treatments and the thermoluminescence indicates a range of independent defect emission sites.

AB - In this work, the influence of the Eu3+ luminescence center concentration on the structural, morphological and spectroscopic properties of powders obtained by an aerosol method was studied. In the method, gadolinium and europium nitrate solutions were ultrasonically aerosolised and fed into a high-temperature (up to 1200 °C) tubular flow reactor to control the aerosol decomposition. During decomposition, the aerosol droplets undergo evaporation/drying, precipitation and thermolysis in a single-step continuous process. Spherical, solid, agglomerate-free, submicron-sized particles with the crystallite sizes below 20 nm have been obtained. In order to control the particle crystal structure and to establish the conditions for the stabilization of the low-temperature gadolinia cubic phase, process parameters such as synthesis temperature, droplet/particle residence time and annealing temperatures were varied. The particle morphology, phase and chemical structure were studied by X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and EDS. Structural changes (crystallite size and microstrains) after powders thermal treatment were carried out using the Koalariet-XFit program as the profile-matching tool. The results obtained and the mechanisms for ultrafine phosphor particle generation are discussed in terms of precursor chemistry, process parameters and luminescence properties.
