AB - Controlled magnesium hydroxide particles were successfully synthesized via a simple hydrothermal method. The influence of temperature and reaction time on the hydrothermal synthesis of Mg(OH)(2) was studied. The results provide new parameters to control the morphologies, particle sizes, agglomeration level and crystallographic structures of the brucite nanosized. The physic chemical properties of synthesized Mg(OH)(2) nanoparticles have been characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), transmission electron microscopy (TEM) combined with selected area electron diffraction (SAED), high resolution transmission electron microscopy (HR-TEM) and thermogravimetry/differential scanning calorimetry (TG/DSC). It has been shown that the prolongation of reaction time improves the crystalline degree of magnesium hydroxide particles. It was also possible to detect a relevant increase in the degree of crystallinity and a faster crystal growth with defined hexagonal morphologies in the samples obtained at higher temperature. Our results show that this simple hydrothermal route is highly interesting for the large scale production of these nanomaterials. (C) 2014 Elsevier Ltd and Techna Group S.r.l. All rights reserved.

AB - ZnO nanoparticles were synthesized in a horizontal three zones furnace at 500 °C using different zinc nitrate hexahydrate concentrations (0.01 M, 0.1 M, and 1.0 M) as a reactive precursor solution by air assisted Ultrasonic Spray Pyrolysis (USP) method. The physico-chemical, structural and functional properties of synthesized ZnO nanoparticles have been characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), energy dispersive spectroscopy (EDS), high resolution transmission electron microscopy (HRTEM), Brunauer, Emmett and Teller (BET) method, UV–vis spectroscopy and photoluminescence (PL) measurements. Also, the photocatalytic activities of ZnO synthesized from different precursor concentrations were evaluated by removal rate of methyleneblue (MB) under UV irradiation (365 nm) at room temperature. SEM revealed two types of ZnO nanoparticles: a quasi-spherical, desert-rose like shape of the secondary particles, which does not change significantly with the increasing of precursor solution concentration as well as some content of the broken spheres. Increasing the precursor solution concentration leads to the increase in the average size of ZnO secondary particles from 248 ± 73 to 920 ± 190 nm, XRD reveals the similar tendency for the crystallite size which changes from 23 ± 4 to 55 ± 12 nm in the analyzed region. HRTEM implies the secondary particles are with hierarchical structure composed of primary nanosized subunits. The PL spectra imply a typical broad peak of wavelength centered in the visible region exhibiting the corresponding red-shift with the increase of solution concentration: 560, 583 and 586 nm for the 0.01, 0.1 and 1.0 M solution, respectively. The reported results showed the photocatalytic efficiency of ZnO nanoparticles was enhanced by increased precursor concentration.

AB - Sub-micronic particles are of considerable interest for a wide variety of applications, such as catalyst or optical ceramics, due to their unique properties determined by size, composition and structure. In this work, we have reported a simple, rapid, single-step aerosol processing for the continuous synthesis of nanostructured particles having homogeneous composition and narrow size distributions, good crystallinity and fluorescence response. This paper presents the synthesis, optimization and characterization of hybrid Ag@Y2O3:Eu (9 at.% Eu3+) phosphor particles by means of spray pyrolysis method from water solutions of common nitrates precursors. The effect of silver concentration on particle structure, morphology and functional properties was specially evaluated. The as-prepared samples were additionally heated from 800 to 1200 °C/12 h under constant argon flow to avoid the silver oxidation. It was evident the cubic phase with Ia-3 symmetry as the principal one in all as-prepared and thermally treated samples. For the case high silver nitrate concentrations in precursor solutions a minority crystalline phase having Fm3m symmetry was identified. The luminescence emission spectra have been taken after excitation at 235 nm wavelength. It is evident the increase in the emission caused by the presence of metallic silver nanoparticles onto Y2O3:Eu3+ particle surface. It was also determined the silver concentration influence on the fluorescence response.

AB - Scanning-Transmission and Transmission Electron Microscopy techniques (STEM and TEM) have been applied to the characterization of nanostructured gadolinium oxides doped with europium synthesized by spray pyrolysis. The High Angle Annular Dark Field (HAADF) – Scanning Transmission Electron Microscopy (STEM) tools have been used to perform a tomographic study to identify morphological characteristics of nanostructured particles, and to differentiate them according to the heat treatments to which these have been subjected. With these techniques it has been possible to confirm the hollowness and porous nature of samples subjected to low temperature annealing (900 °C). Moreover, the beginning of the densification and sintering processes in samples subjected to thermal treatment at higher temperature (1100 °C) have been evaluated. Chemical analysis by electron energy loss spectroscopy (EELS) and X ray energy dispersive spectroscopy (EDS) carried out in STEM mode have allowed to confirm the high uniformity and the expected chemical composition. The high resolution tools either allowed to confirm the presence of a cubic (Ia3 symmetry) and the monoclinic (c2/m symmetry) phases in the nanostructured particles.

abstract = "Scanning-Transmission and Transmission Electron Microscopy techniques (STEM and TEM) have been applied to the characterization of nanostructured gadolinium oxides doped with europium synthesized by spray pyrolysis. The high resolution tools either allowed to confirm the presence of a cubic (Ia3 symmetry) and the monoclinic (c2/m symmetry) phases in the nanostructured particles.",

AB - Spray Pyrolysis (SP) is performed at 700°C in dry air atmosphere using common nitrate aqueous solutions (0,1M) as precursor in order to obtain nanostructured particles with the composition Gd2-xEuxO3 (x= 0.05, 0.10 and 0.30). In this work, three samples with different atomic europium concentration (1, 2 and 6%) were studied. After, the obtained particles were subjected to different thermal treatments with varying temperatures between 800 and 1000oC/12 h in dry air atmosphere. The obtained particles were characterized by XRD, SEM techniques, laser dispersion and steady state fluorescence spectroscopy. The existence of two cubic phases with different symmetry cubic phases (Ia-3, Fm-3m) was identified within the "as-prepared" samples. Moreover, the presence of Gd2O3 monoclinic phase (C2/m) which disappears during the thermal treatments was proved. In all thermally treated samples, it was observed the stabilization of an only Ia-3 phase. Fluorescence emission measurements in all studied samples the presence of Eu2+ (λ= 430nm), whose intensity increases as long as the content of the monoclinic phase decreases of the Eu3+ percentage.
