AB - Ekološki izvori energije i ekonomične metode prečišćavanja vode i vazduha velika supotreba današnjeg tehnološki razvijenog sveta. Dalje istraživanje je išlo u smeru proširenja saznanja o pojedinačnim i kombinovanimuticajima dopiranja azotom i deponovanja kvatnih tačaka neorganskog senzivatora nafotokatalitičku aktivnost TiO2 nanocevi. AB - Environmental friendly power sources and cost-effective methods for water and airpurification, are a necessity in modern technologically developed world. Photoactive materials canprovide an environmentally friendly alternative to fossil fuels in power production and enable theremediation of changes in the environment. Namely, photoactive materials absorb light, whichexcites electrons that are responsible for generating electricity or participate in the process ofdecomposition of pollutants. There are a large number of photoactive materials, among which TiO2has attracted particular attention, due to its chemical inertness, resistance to photo and chemicalcorrosion and non-toxicity. The photoactivity of TiO2 depends on many factors, such asmorphology, crystal structure and the degree of recombination of charge carriers. The aim of this doctoral dissertation is to improve the photocatalytic and photoelectricactivity of TiO2 nanotubes. For this purpose, TiO2 nanotubes were synthesized by theelectrochemical anodization of a titanium plate. The influence of the anodization process parameterson the morphology and photocatalytic activity of TiO2 nanotubes for color degradation wasinvestigated. It was found that an increased anodization voltage leads to increased heights anddiameters of nanotubes, causing the shift of the absorption limit towards the visible part of thespectrum and the improvement of the photocatalytic activity. The influence of the annealingtemperature on the crystal structure, morphology and the photocatalytic activity of TiO2 nanotubeswas determined. The anatase crystalline modification with a very low rutile phase content wasobtained by annealing nanotubes at 450 °C. When the annealing temperature was further increased(600 and 650 °C), the presence of both phases, anatase and rutile, was observed in different ratios, and the complete transformation of anatase to rutile occurred at 700 °C. Besides the change in thecrystal structure, the influence of the annealing temperature on the morphology of the nanotubeswas observed as well. As the annealing temperature increased, the height and porosity of nanotubesdecreased, so that the nanotube morphology collapsed at 700 °C. The influence of the crystalstructure and morphology of TiO2 nanotubes on the photocatalytic degradation of methyl-orangewas observed. It was concluded that the simultaneous presence of anatase and rutile provides betterphotocatalytic activity than pure anatase and pure rutile. In order to investigate the effect of nitrogen doping of TiO2 on photocatalytic activity, TiO2nanotubes were annealed in an ammonia atmosphere, at a temperature of 450 °C, for differentannealing times. The influence of the annealing time on the amount and type of doping wasinvestigated. It was observed that annealing in an ammonia atmosphere, for different periods, didnot affect the morphology of nanotubes. A chemical analysis of the surface of TiO2 nanotubes by Xray photoelectron spectroscopy showed that the total nitrogen content in nanotubes decreased withlonger annealing times. In addition, the annealing duration in ammonia also influenced the nature ofnitrogen incorporation into TiO2. With a shorter annealing time, a higher content of interstitialnitrogen and a lower amount of substitution nitrogen were observed. With a longer annealing timein ammonia, the amount of interstitial nitrogen decreased, while the substitution nitrogen increased. The absorption spectra showed that the sample with the highest amount of nitrogen and the highestcontent of interstitial nitrogen showed the largest shift towards higher wavelengths. The sameapplies to the photocatalytic efficiency. The greatest photocatalytic degradation of the dye wasachieved in the sample annealed in ammonia for the shortest time.Further research was directed towards expanding the knowledge of individual and combinedeffects of nitrogen doping and deposition of the quantum dots of inorganic sensors on thephotocatalytic activity of TiO2 nanotubes. It was observed that the deposition of CdS quantum dotsdid not affect the morphology of nanotubes, but in some places agglomeration of CdS nanoparticlesoccurred, due to which nanotube openings closed. The photocatalytic efficiency of nitrogen-dopednanotubes was improved after CdS nanoparticle deposition. The sample with the highest amount oftotal nitrogen and interstitial nitrogen in combination with deposited CdS nanoparticles exhibitedthe highest photocatalytic efficiency...

AB - The aim of this work was to synthesize semiconducting oxide nanoparticles using a simple method with low production cost to be applied in natural sunlight for photocatalytic degradation of pollutants in waste water. Iron titanate (Fe2TiO5) nanoparticles with an orthorhombic structure were successfully synthesized using a modified sol–gel method and calcination at 750°C. The as-prepared Fe2TiO5 nanoparticles exhibited a moderate specific surface area. The mesoporous Fe2TiO5 nanoparticles possessed strong absorption in the visible-light region and the band gap was estimated to be around 2.16 eV. The photocatalytic activity was evaluated by the degradation of methylene blue under natural sunlight. The effect of parameters such as the amount of catalyst, initial concentration of the dye and pH of the dye solution on the removal efficiency of methylene blue was investigated. Fe2TiO5 showed high degradation efficiency in a strong alkaline medium that can be the result of the facilitated formation of OH radicals due to an increased concentration of hydroxyl ions.

AB - This work deals with our continued research of oxide materials for potential application in gas/humidity sensing. We have made thick film samples using iron manganite powder synthesized by a sol-gel combustion method with a net-like structure, by screen printing on alumina substrate with PdAg interdigitated electrodes. The thick film samples were fired at two temperatures 600 and 800°C. The powder morphology was retained and only the organic compounds in the paste were burnt-out at 600°C, while at 800°C the thick film surface morphology was different where grain growth and individual particles can be observed. We measured complex impedance in a temperature and humidity chamber at room temperature (25°C) in the relative humidity range 30 – 90 % and frequency 100 Hz - 1 MHz. The thick film surface morphology has a significant influence on the effect of humidity on complex impedance. The complex impedance of thick films fired at 600°C was high and did not decrease noticeably with increase in relative humidity (RH), except for RH 80 and 90%, while thick film samples fired at 800°C had an overall lower impedance that reduced more noticeably with increase in RH 40–70% and even more for RH 80 and 90%.

The complex impedance of thick films fired at 600°C was high and did not decrease noticeably with increase in relative humidity (RH), except for RH 80 and 90%, while thick film samples fired at 800°C had an overall lower impedance that reduced more noticeably with increase in RH 40–70% and even more for RH 80 and 90%.",

AB - We fabricated Sn-doped TiO2 nanotubular film via annealing of anodized TiO2 nanotubes grown on F–SnO2 (FTO) glass. Annealing was carried out at 500 °C in ambient air. Anatase crystal structure was achieved with no change in nanotubular morphology in respect to as-anodized amorphous TiO2 nanotubes. The X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy analysis revealed Sn on the surface of TiO2 film, following the thermal treatment, probably caused by the diffusion from FTO glass. Depth profile examination of the film chemical composition was conducted by elastic recoil detection analysis, which showed that in addition to the diffusion of Sn from FTO, diffusion of Ti to FTO concurrently occurred. Thus, a higher concentration of Sn was found at the bottom of the tubes, while a lower concentration was present on the tubes’ surface top. This explains the improved optical response revealed by a diffuse reflectance spectroscopy. The absorption enhancement demonstrated that Sn-doped TiO2 film was efficient in the degradation of methyl orange dye under visible light.

AB - Highly ordered, anodically grown TiO 2 nanotubes on titanium supports were annealed in ammonia atmosphere in order to incorporate nitrogen doping (≤2 at.%) in the titanium oxide lattice. FESEM micrographs revealed nanotubes with an average outer diameter of 101.5 ± 1.5 nm and an average wall thickness of about 13 nm. Anatase crystals were formed inside the tubes after annealing in ammonia atmosphere for 30 min. With further annealing, rutile peaks appeared due to the thermal oxidation of the foil and rise as the duration of heat treatment was increased. The concentration and chemical nature of nitrogen in the nanotube arrays can be correlated to the optical response of dry-pressed heterojunctions of doped TiO 2 /CH 3 NH 3 PbI 3 single crystals. The N-TiO 2 /perovskite heterojunction with the highest amount of interstitial nitrogen exhibited an improved photocurrent, indicating the importance of the semiconductor doping-based heterojunction optimization strategies to deliver competitive levels of halide perovskite-based optoelectronic devices to be envisioned for urban infrastructures. © 2019

AB - Zinc ferrite nanocrystalline powder was obtained by solid state synthesis of starting zinc oxide and hematite nanopowders. Field emission scanning electron microscopy (FESEM and transmission electron microscopy (TEM), X‐ray diffraction (XRD), X‐ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) and Raman spectroscopy confirmed the formation of nanocrystalline zinc‐ferrite powder with a mixed spinel structure with small amounts of remaining zinc oxide and hematite as impurities. Thick film paste was formed and screen printed on test interdigitated PdAg electrodes on alumina substrate. Formation of a porous nanocrystalline structure was confirmed by scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and Hg porosimetry. Humidity sensing properties of zinc ferrite thick films were investigated by monitoring the change in impedance in the relative humidity interval 30‐90% in the frequency range 42 Hz – 1 MHz at room temperature (25 °C) and 50 °C. At 42 Hz at both analyzed temperatures the impedance reduced ~ 46 times in the humidity range 30‐90%. The dominant influence of grain boundaries was confirmed by analysis of complex impedance with an equivalent circuit.

AB - Nanocrystalline iron manganite was synthesized using a sol-gel self-combustion method with glycine as fuel, followed by calcination at 900 °C for 8 hours. Structural characterization was performed using X-ray diffraction (XRD) and field emission scanning electron microscopy (FESEM). It confirmed the formation of nanocrystalline iron-manganite with a perovskite structure. Humidity sensing properties of bulk and thick film samples of the obtained nanocrystalline iron manganite powder were analyzed. Organic vehicles were added to the powder to form a thick film paste that was screen printed on alumina substrate with test PdAg interdigitated electrodes. Impedance response of bulk and thick film samples was analyzed in a humidity chamber in the relative humidity range 30-90% in the frequency range 42 Hz to 1 MHz in view of applying iron-manganite for humidity sensing applications.

AB - In this work, spinel magnesium cobalt ferrites (CoxMg1-xFe2O4, x = 0.0, 0.1, 0.3, 0.5, 0.7, 0.9) were synthesized by a sol-gel combustion method. Magnesium nitrate, cobalt nitrate and iron nitrate were used as oxidizers and citric acid was used as a reducing agent. The effects of cobalt ions on structural and morphological properties were investigated and characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD), Raman spectroscopy, Field emission scanning electron microscope (FESEM) and Fourier transform infrared (FT-IR) spectroscopy. A cubic spinel structure formed with a varied distribution of cobalt and magnesium ions on tetrahedral and octahedral sites that depended on their content. All ferrite powders consisted of multigrain agglomerates. Optical properties were investigated by UV- vis spectrophotometry. The photocatalytic activity of as prepared samples was evaluated by measuring the rate of photodegradation reaction of methylene blue (MB) under visible light irradiation. After 240 min, compared to other samples, the sample labeled as Co0.1Mg0.9Fe2O4 showed the best rate of photodecomposition of MB resulting in reduction of 90% of its initial concentration.

Fe(NO3)3 9H2O and Ti(OC3H7)4 as starting reagents, oxalic acid as chilate agent and cetyltrimethylammonium bromide as surfactant. The aim of this study was to asses the photocatalytic degradaton of the antibiotic Oxytetracycline (OTC) using visible light irradiation. As prepared nanoparticles were characterized by XRD, BET, FESEM and UV-vis DRS. The optimal operating conditions of oxytetracycline photocatalytic degradation were achived by changing the pH of the solution and changing the concentration of photocatalyst.

AB - Nanocrystalline cobalt magnesium ferrites with varying cobalt and magnesium content (CoxMg1-xFe2O4, 0<x<1) were synthesized using the sol-gel self-combustion method with citric acid as fuel, followed by calcination at 700 C for 2 hours. Structural characterization was performed using Xray diffraction (XRD), field emission scanning electron microscopy (FE-SEM) and Raman spectroscopy. It confirmed the formation of agglomerated nanocrystalline ferrites with an inverse cubic spinel structure. The optical band gap energy was determined using UV/Vis spectrophotometry. It reduced with increased Co content. Visible light photocatalytic activity was tested using natural and artificial light sources through a series of experimental degradations of the methylene blue (MB) solution.

AB - In this study, pseudobrookite (Fe2TiO5) nanoparticles were fabricated by a modified sol-gel method using Fe(NO3)39H2O and Ti(OC3H7)4 as starting reagents and ethanol as solvent. Oxalic acid was used as a chelating agent while cetyltrimethyammonium bromide (CTAB) and citric monohydrate were used as surfactants. Structral and morphological characterization using X-Ray Diffraction (XRD) and Field Emission Scanning Electron Microscopy (FESEM) analysis confirmed the formation of pseudobrookite nanoparticles. As synthetized Fe2TiO5 nanoparticles were utilized as photocatalysts for decolorisation of Methylene blue (MB) under visible light irradiation. It was observed that the adsorption of MB onto Fe2TiO5 nanoparticles is strongly dependent on the solution pH. Maximum decolorozation was observed for Fe2TiO5 nanoparticles prepared with CTAB under alcaline conditions (pH=10.5).

abstract = "In this study, pseudobrookite (Fe2TiO5) nanoparticles were fabricated by a modified sol-gel method using Fe(NO3)39H2O and Ti(OC3H7)4 as starting reagents and ethanol as solvent. Maximum decolorozation was observed for Fe2TiO5 nanoparticles prepared with CTAB under alcaline conditions (pH=10.5).",

AB - Titanium dioxide is a photocatalyst, known not only for its ability to oxidize organic contaminants, but also for its antimicrobial properties. In this article, significant enhancement of the antimicrobial activity of TiO2 (up to 32 times) was demonstrated after its activation by ball milling. The antimicrobial activity was analyzed for one fungal and 13 bacterial ATCC strains using the microdilution method and recording the minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) values. In order to further investigate the correlation between the mechanical activation of TiO2 and its antimicrobial activity, the structure, morphology and phase composition of the material were studied by means of Electron Microscopy, X-ray diffraction and nitrogen adsorption-desorption measurements. UV-Vis diffuse reflectance spectra were recorded and the Kubelka-Munk function was applied to convert reflectance into the equivalent band gap energy (Eg) and, consequently, to investigate changes in the Eg value. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy was used to analyze the influence of mechanical activation on the Ti 2p and O 1s spectra. The presented results are expected to enable the development of more sustainable and effective advanced TiO2-based materials with antimicrobial properties that could be used in numerous green technology applications.

AB - Different semiconductors have been studied as photoanode material for solar cells. Among them, TiO2 has been shown to be the best material due to its chemical stability and good charge transport capability. It is usually deposited onto FTO glass (F-SnO2), and then heated at high temperature in order to obtain inter-crystalline electric contact for improving electron conductivity. The focus of this research was chemical analysis of the TiO2 nanotubes (NTs) obtained by anodization of titanium film on FTO glass using NH4F in ethylene glycol electrolyte. There are only few studies suggesting that the electrolyte is a source of N dopant in TiO2, but also Sn diffusion from FTO support was reported. This study aims to show the chemical distribution of elements of interest along the nanotubes depth. For that purpose the time-of-flight elastic recoil detection analysis (ToF-ERDA) and Rutherford backscattering (RBS) methods were used as complementary techniques for chemical analysis of both light, such is N, and heavy elements, such is Sn. The TiO2 NTs films were annealed at different temperatures (450– 630 °C) and the impact of the heating temperature on the chemical distribution was followed.

AB - Semiconductor TiO2 photocatalysis is a heterogeneous catalysis, where the photons of the sun or artificial light source are activating the catalyst that enters in reactions. The targeted real-world applications are in environmental protection and remediation such as wastewater treatment, air purification and decomposition of harmful organic pollutants. In this talk, I present the synthesis of nanotubular, thin TiO2 coatings with altered morphology and crystallinity made by anodization technique. The influence of the anodization parameters and post-synthesis annealing conditions on the photocatalytic methyl orange dye decomposition was assessed. Different morphology, crystallinity and introducing a dopant into lattice increase electron transport and electron lifetime which further improve photocatalytic activity.

AB - One-dimensional (1D) TiO2 nanotubes perpendicular to the substrate were obtained by electrochemical oxidation of titanium foil in an acid electrolyte. In order to alter the crystallinity and the morphology of films the as-anodized amorphous TiO2 nanotube films were sintered at elevated temperatures. The evolution of the morphology was visualized via scanning electron microscopy (SEM), while the crystalline structure was investigated by X-ray diffraction (XRD) and Raman spectroscopy. The chemical composition was studied by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). The effects of crystallinity and morphology of TiO2 nanotube (NTs) films on photocatalytic degradation of methyl orange (MO) in an aqueous solution under UV light irradiation were also investigated. The TiO2 nanotubes sintered at 650°C for 30 min had the highest degree of crystallinity and exhibited the best photocatalytic activity among the studied TiO2 nanotube films. AB - Pseudobrookite based nanopowder was obtained by solid state synthesis of starting hematite and anatase nanopowders in the weight ratio 55:45. Structural and morphological properties were analyzed using X-ray diffraction (XRD), BET, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), Raman spectroscopy, UV/Vis diffuse reflectance spectroscopy, Field emission scanning electron microscopy (FESEM) and Transmission electron microscopy (TEM) confirming the formation of nanocrystalline pseudobrookite. The obtained powder was mixed with a binder (ethyl cellulose), dispersant (α-terpinol) and adhesion agents (acetic acid and distilled water) to obtain a thick film paste. It was screen printed on alumina substrate with interdigitated PdAg electrodes and fired at 600 °C for 30 min. Formation of a porous nanocrystalline thick film structure was shown using Scanning electron microscopy (SEM), while Hall measurements enabled determination of carrier mobility. Change of impedance response in the frequency range 42 Hz–1 MHz with humidity was analyzed at room temperature (25 °C) and 50 °C in the relative humidity range 30–90% and 40–90%, respectively. At 42 Hz, and room temperature the impedance reduced ∼28 times, while at 50 °C it reduced ∼147 times in the relative humidity range 40–90%. The sensor showed rapid response (16 s) and relatively low hysteresis (8.39% at 25 °C and 2.64% at 50 °C) showing that this is a promising material for application in humidity sensing.
