AB - The samples of Sm/Mn codoped BaTiO3 ceramics, prepared by conventional solid state procedure with dopant concentrations ranged from 0.1 up to 5.0 at%, were investigated in this paper. The specimens were sintered at 1290°C and 1350°C in an air atmosphere for two hours. The low doped samples demonstrated the mainly uniform and homogeneous microstructure with average grain sizes ranged from 0.3 μm to 5.0 μm. The appearances of secondary abnormal grains in fine grain matrix and core-shell structure were observed in highly doped Sm/BaTiO3 sintered at 1350°C. Dielectric measurements were carried out as a function of temperature up to 200°C. The low doped samples, sintered at 1350°C, display the high value of dielectric permittivity (εr=6800 ) at room temperature. A nearly flat permittivity-response was obtained in specimens with 5.0 at% additive content. Using a modified Curie-Weiss low the Curie-like constant C´ and a critical exponent γ were calculated. The obtained values of γ pointed out the diffuse phase transformation in heavily doped BaTiO3 samples.

AB - Dy/Mn doped BaTiO3 with different Dy2O3 contents, ranging from 0.1 to 5.0 at% Dy, were investigated regarding their microstructural and dielectric characteristics. The content of 0.05 at% Mn was constant in all the investigated samples. The samples were prepared by the conventional solid state reaction and sintered at 1290°, and 1350 °C in air atmosphere for 2 h. The low doped samples (0.1 and 0.5 at% Dy) exhibit mainly fairly uniform and homogeneous microstructure with average grain sizes ranged from 0.3 μm to 3.0 μm. At 1350 °C, the appearance of secondary, abnormal, grains in the fine grain matrix and core–shell structure were observed in highly doped Dy/BaTiO3. Dielectric measurements were carried out as a function of temperature up to 180 °C. The low doped samples sintered at 1350 °C, display the high value of dielectric permittivity at room temperature, 5600 for 0.1Dy/BaTiO3. A nearly flat permittivity–temperature response was obtained in specimens with 2.0 and 5.0 at% additive content. Using a Curie–Weiss and modified Curie–Weiss low, the Curie constant (C), Curie like constant (C′), Curie temperature (TC) and a critical exponent (γ) were calculated. The obtained values of γ pointed out the diffuse phase transformation in highly doped BaTiO3 samples.

AB - The Er doped BaTiO3 ceramics, with different Er2O3 content, ranging from 0.01 to 1.0 wt% Er, were investigated regarding their microstructural and dielectric characteristics in this paper. Doped BaTiO3 were prepared by using conventional method of solid state sintering at 1380 °C for four hours. SEM analysis of Er/BaTiO3 doped ceramics showed that in samples doped with a rareearth ions low level, the grain size ranged from 20-40 μm, while with the higher dopant concentration the abnormal grain growth is inhibited and the grain size ranged between 2-10μm. Dielectric measurements were carried out as a function of temperature up to180°C at different frequencies. The low doped samples sintered at 1380 °C, display the high value of dielectric permittivity at room temperature, 2160 for 0.01 Er/BaTiO3. A nearly flat permittivity-response was obtained in specimens with higher additive content. Using a Curie-Weiss low and modified Curie-Weiss low the Curie constant C, Curie temperature Tc and a critical exponent of nonlinearity γ were calculated. The Curie temperature of doped samples were ranged from 126 to 130 °C. The Curie constant for all series of samples decrease with increase of dopant concentration and the lowest values were mesured from samples doped with 0.01 wt% of aditive. The obtained value of γ pointed out that the specimens have almost sharp phase transition.

AB - Sintering process is a complex of different synergetic effects during the ceramics materials consolidation. The microstructural level properties control is very important as a stage in advanced materials prognosis. SEM analysis of Yb/BaTiO3 doped ceramics showed that in samples doped with a low level of dopant and sintered at higher temperatures the grain size ranged from 10-60μm, while with the higher dopant concentration the grain size ranged between 2-15μm. The morphology of sintered BaTiO3-ceramics grains points out the validity of developing new structure analytical methods based on different geometries of grains' model systems. The idea of electrical properties of BaTiO3-ceramics being influenced by intergrain microcontacts can be successfully followed if we start with the two-sphere Coble’s model and also the correction of the Coble’s model. In this paper, the grains contact models based on spherical, ellipsoidal and polyhedral geometries are presented making a new modeling tool for structure research of BaTiO3-ceramics materials. Intergranular impedance analysis of grains clusters was also introduced. Obtained results enabled establishment of interrelation between structural and electrical parameters.

AB - In this article, ytterbium and erbium oxides are used as doping materials for barium titanate (BaTiO3) materials. The amphoteric behavior of these rare-earth ions leads to the increase of dielectric permittivity and decrease of dielectric losses. BaTiO3 ceramics doped with 0.01-0.5 wt% of Yb2O3 and Er2O3 were prepared by conventional solid-state procedure and sintered at 1320°C for 4 h. In BaTiO3 doped with a low content of rare-earth ions (0.01 wt%) the grain size ranged between 10 and 25 μm. With the higher dopant concentration of 0.5 wt%, the abnormal grain growth is inhibited and the grain size ranged between 2 and 10 μm. The measurements of capacitance and dielectric losses as a function of frequency and temperature have been carried out in order to correlate the microstructure and dielectric properties of doped BaTiO 3 ceramics. The temperature dependence of the dielectric constant as a function of dopant amount has been investigated. © 2009 The American Ceramic Society.

AB - BaTiO3-ceramics are known as some of the most useful electroceramics with a various applications. In this study the effect of Er 2O3 as additive on the microstructure and dielectric properties of doped BaTiO3 was investigated. The samples doped with 0.01 to 1.0 wt% Er2O3 were prepared using by conventional solid state procedure, and were sintered at 1350°C for four hours. The microstructure of sintered specimens was investigated by SEM-5300 and capacitance and dielectric loss measurements have been done using LCR-metra Agilent 4284A in the frequency range from 20Hz to 1MHz. The microstructure study with low additive concentration shows abnormal grain size, with average grain size between 20-60 μm. With the higher dopant concentracion the abnormal grain growth is inhibited and the grain size ranged between 5-15μm. The dielectric constant decrease with increase of dopant concentration and for all of the investigated samples ranged from 650 to 1600 at room temperature. The dissipation losses a linear decrease v.s frequency is mesured for all investigated samples. We applied a fractal method for the microstructure analysis. This method for analysis of the structure of ceramics provides a new approach for describing, predicting and modeling the grain shape and relations between the BaTiO3 ceramic structure and dielectrical properties.

AB - Doped barium-titanate ceramic is attracting much interest for its application as resistors with a positive temperature coefficient of resistivity (PTCR), multilayer ceramic capacitors (MLCC), thermal sensors etc. In this article the influence of Yb2O3, Er2O 3 and Ho2O3 on microstructure development and dielectric properties of BaTiO3 ceramics has been presented. BaTiO3-ceramics doped with 0.5 up to 1 wt % of Yb2O 3, Er2O3 and Ho2O3 were prepared by conventional solid state procedure and sintered up to 1320°C for two hours. Microstructure investigations of doped BaTiO3 was performed using the scanning electron microscopy (SEM), energy dispersive spectrometer (EDS) and stereological methods. The measurements of capacitance and dielectric losses as a function of frequency and temperature were evaluated by matching model. Special attention has been focused on the study of the changes in morphology, grain and pore size distribution of the sintered specimens and their correlation with the change of capacity, dielectric permittivity and Curie temperature.

AB - In this article the solid state reaction of BaTiO3 formation from a mechanically activated BaCO3-TiO2 system has been investigated. An equimolar mixture of BaCO3 and TiO2 powders was activated in a planetary ball mill in a continual regime for 0, 30 and 90 min, pressed and thermally treated up to 1200°C. The efect of the milling and firing regime on the phase formation was investigated by the X-ray diffraction (XRD) method and differential thermal analysis (DTA). Deconvolution of the experimental DTA curve corresponding to the BaTiO3 synthesis process has been performed. The influence of the activation time on the change of characteristic temperature for each elementary step in the complete solid-state reaction of BaTiO3 formation, was analyzed. These results were correlated with the ones obtained by SEM characterization and by XRD analysis.

AB - In this paper the influence of tribophysical activation on non-isothermal sintering of barium titanate has been investigated. BaTiO3 Powders were tribophysically activated in a planetary ball mill for 0, 60 and 120 min., pressed and non-isothermally sintered up to 1380 degrees C. Dilatometric analysis was performed in air in the temperature range from room temperature to 1380 degrees C with heating rates of 10, 20 and 30 degrees C/min. The samples were analyzed by the X-ray powder diffraction method. Investigation of the morphology of microstructure constituents was performed using the scanning electron microsocopy method. With the purpose of optimizing technological parameters the results obtained by microstructure analysis were correlated with the results of quantitative dilatometric analysis.

AB - Increasing demands on the quality of electronic ceramics requires a well-controlled correlation between particle morphology and processing conditions. Since mechanical activation is one of the methods for modification of physico-chemical properties of dispersed systems, in this study a correlation between the densification rate and microstructure evolution of mechanically activated BaTiO3 has been analyzed. The shrinkage behaviour of mechanically activated samples, sintered under non-isothermal conditions has been analyzed by a sensitive dilatometer. Densification rate as a function of relative density for different activation times has been calculated. Microstructure investigations of sintered samples were carried out, using a scanning electron microscope (SEM). The presented results enable establishing processing parameters that are indispensable for obtaining materials with advanced properties.

AB - Mechanical activation and sintering are used for obtaining zinc titanate, Zn2TiO4. Starting powder mixtures of ZnO and TiO2, in the molar ratio that is in accordance with the stoichiometry ofzinc titanate Zn2TiO4, were echanically activated using a planetary mill during different time intervals from 0 to180 minutes. Scanning electron microscopy was employed to probe the powdersmicrostructure. Progress of the solid-state reaction from the starting powders and evolution of the phases were followed using X-ray powder diffraction. Sintering kinetics was investigated duringisothermal heating at 1100oC from 0 to 120 minutes. The main conclusion based on the analysis made is that Zn2TiO4 ceramics could be obtained by mechanical activation after a certain time without additional thermal treatment. Also, shorter activation times together with calcination at 900oC show that the required sintering temperature and sintering time could be lower than those reported in literature.

AB - Spray pyrolysis was used for the deposition of well defined submicronic to nanosize particles based on ZnO. The influence of the temperature in the range from 345 to 1165 K, solution concentration (0.004 and 1.5 mol dm(-3)) and the residence time on the particle morphology is discussed. X-ray diffraction, differential scanning calorimetry and scanning electron microscopy were used in particle characterization. With the presumption that certain particle morphology is formed during the evaporation/drying stage of spray pyrolysis, the corresponding mathematical model for droplets evaporation is developed and correlated with the empirical results.

AB - Submicrometer spherical particles of mullite powder were synthesized by ultrasonic spray pyrolysis of emulsion and solutions, using tetra-ethyl-orthosilicate (TEOS) or silicic-acid and Al(NO3)(3) . 9H(2)O as initial compounds. Crystallization of mullite phase was determined by differential thermal (DT), thermogravimetric (TG), infrared (IR), and x-ray analyses. The synthesis of mullite from TEOS emulsion occurs by crystallization of gamma-Al2O3 (or Al, Si-spinel) from the amorphous phase and its subsequent reaction with amorphous SiO2, as well as by crystallization of pseudotetragonal mullite below 1000 degrees C and its subsequent phase transformation into orthorhombic mullite, in the powders produced from silicic acid solutions, synthesis of mullite occurs only by crystallization of gamma-Al2O3 between 900 and 1000 degrees C and its further reaction with amorphous SiO2 between 1100 and 1200 degrees C. Particle formation mechanism depended directly on the initial emulsion or solution preparation. i.e., on the phase separation in the emulsion and on the silicic-acid crosslinking conditions.
