AB - The influence of gamma radiation on the structure and glass transition behaviour of poly-L-lactide (PLLA) has been studied. Since PLLA exposed to high-energy radiation in the presence of air is prone to chain scission reactions and large degradation, changes in molecular weight were obtained by the gel permeation chromatography (GPC). Alterations in the glass transition behaviour were investigated by differential scanning calorimetry (DSC). The apparent activation energy, Delta H*, for the glass transition was determined on the basis of the heating rate dependence of the glass transition temperature, T(g). Our findings support the fact that chain scission is the main reason for the decrease of Tg and Delta H* with the absorbed dose. At low doses, despite large changes in molecular weight, only small alterations are observed in the glass transition temperature and apparent activation energy. Further increase in the absorbed dose introduces not only significant changes in the molecular weight but also in the glass transition temperature and the activation energy. Such glass transition behaviour is a manifestation of a well-known effect of molecular weight on Tg, postulated by the Fox-Flory equation. However, all the observed alterations are small and tolerable at absorbed doses required for sterilization (up to 25 kGy in most circumstances). Furthermore, this study reveals that the radiation-induced changes in the molecular weight and the glass transition temperature occur in a predictable and fairly accurate manner. Therefore, gamma radiation can be used not only for sterilization but also for tailoring desirable end-use properties of PLLA based implants.

AB - Hydroxyapatite/poly L-lactide (HAp/PLLA) is a composite biomaterial which has been widely utilized for substitution and reparation of the hard bone tissue. It is well known that gamma irradiation has been successfully employed in the modification/sterilization of such porous composites and that it has advantages over other procedures. In this study, differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) measurements were made to investigate the influence of the radiation on glass transition behavior and structural relaxation, as well as to estimate the activation energy for this process. The apparent activation energy Delta H* for structural relaxation in the glass transition region was determined on the basis of the heating rate dependence of the glass transition temperature T-g. Furthermore, the results were correlated with those obtained by gel permeation chromatography (GPC). Our findings support the fact that the radiation-induced chain scission in the PLLA phase is the main reason for the decrease of the glass transition temperature and/or activation energy with the absorbed dose.

AB - The effects of gamma irradiation on the structure and properties of hydroxyapatite/poly L-lactide (HAp/PLLA) biomaterial have been investigated. Effects of radiation on microstructure, degradation of polymer part and thermal stability of composite were determined by scanning electronic microscopy (SEM), gel permeation chromatography (GPC) and thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), respectively. Mechanical properties were obtained through mechanical strength and elasticity modulus. Presented results show that properties of HAp/PLLA decay with irradiation dose, but for doses required for sterilization, changes and damaging effects are acceptable. (C) 2006 Elsevier Ltd. AB - Promena strukture i osobina biokompozitnog materijala HAp/PLLA tokom mehanohemijskog tretmana predmet su analize u ovom radu. Smeša HAp/PLLA uparena je u vakuumu i zatim podvrgnuta suvom mlevenju u planetarnom mlinu do 480 minuta. Korišćene su rendgenostrukturna analiza (XRD), diferencijalna skanirajuća kalorimetrija (DSC), skenirajuća elektronska mikroskopija (SEM) transmisiona elektronska mikroskopija (TEM) i infracrvena spektroskopija (IR) za karakterizaciju dobijenog materijala. Na osnovu primenjenih analiza utvđen je uticaj mehanohemijskog tretmana na promene kompozitnog biomaterijala. U najvećoj meri dolazi do smanjenja kristaliničnosti poli-L-laktida(PLLA) i smanjenja veličine kristalita hidroksiapatita (HAp). Sa povećanjem vremena mehanohemijskog tretmana dobija se homogena raspodela faza.
AB - Mechanochemically treated hydroxyapatite/poly-L-lactide (HAp/PLLA) composite biomaterial undergoes significant changes in structure and properties. These were the subject of the analysis presented in this paper. HAp/PLLA mixture was evaporated in vacuum and then subjected to dry milling in a planetary ball mill for 480 minutes. Characterization of the material obtained was carried out using X-ray diffraction (XRD), differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), scanning electronic microscopy (SEM), transmission electronic microscopy (TEM) and infrared spectroscopy (IR). These techniques confirmed that mechanochemical treatment induces changes in the composite biomaterial. The most significant changes are reduction of PLLA crystallinity and size of HAp crystalites. Homogeneous phase arrangenment is obtained by extending the duration of mechanochemical treatment.

AB - Hydroxyapatite/poly-L-lactide (HAp/PLLA) is a ceramic/polymer composite, whose application as a resorbable biomaterial for the substitution and repair of hard bone tissue is widely promising in orthopedic, oral, maxillofacial, and reconstructive surgery. Hot processing is a necessary step for obtaining HAp/PLLA composite blocks with mechanical properties similar to those of bones. In this article, the changes in structure and physicochemical properties of HAp/PLLA composite, hot pressed for different pressing times (5, 15, 30, 45, and 60 min), were studied. Because the morphology of HAp/PLLA composite biomaterial is very sensitive to this procedure, its surface microstructure was analyzed by scanning electron microscopy (SEM) coupled with an energy-dispersive X-ray (EDX) detector system. Structural changes occurring in the material, mostly changes in crystallinity of PLLA, were studied by wide-angle X-ray structural analyses (WAXS) and infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy. Using differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), and gel permeation chromatography (GPC), the influence of hot pressing on the properties, crystallization kinetics, and decomposition of HAp/PLLA composite biomaterial was analyzed. AB - Injectable and gas-permeable composite cements, polydimethylsiloxane/hydroxyapatite (PDMS/HAp), were synthesized using bi-component polysiloxane precursors (RTV-A and RTV-B), which react by hydrosilylation, and different mass fractions of hydroxyapatite (HAp) having particle size of about 100 nm. The effect of HAp mass fraction (0-60%) on the thermodynamic and kinetic parameters of polysiloxanes cross-linking, i.e., PDMS/HAp composite preparation, was investigated by means of differential scanning calorimetry (DSC). It was determined that small mass fractions of HAp (up to about 10%) cause a decrease in temperature (T-max), and activation energy (E-a) of the investigated cross-linking process, while the total heat of the process (H-tot) increases. For the HAp mass fraction greater than 20%, an opposite effect was observed. The temperature and the time interval of cross-linking increase rapidly for smaller, but slowly, almost insignificantly, for larger HAp mass fractions. The determined order (n) of the reaction shows a trend similar to H-tot, but due to small variations found, this does not merit discussion.

AB - An injectable polydimethylsiloxane/hydroxyapatite (PDMS/HAp) composite cement was synthesised using linear PDMS and HAp (particles of about 100 nm in size) of different mass fractions. The effect of HAp mass fraction (5-60 mass%) on the hardness of PDMS/HAp composite cement was investigated. The hardness achieved is 25-49degreesShA. Differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) was used to study the cross-linking process and the influence of HAp on the temperature and duration of PDMS/HAp cross-linking. The microstructure of composite cement surfaces after 10 days in vivo tests was observed by scanning electron microscopy (SEM). The presence of well-adhered macrophages, fibroblasts and monocytes was found on the implant surface upon its extraction from the organism.

AB - Hydroxyapatite/poly-L-lactide (HAp/PLL) composite biomaterial can be obtained by different processing methods. Three-dimensional blocks of HAp/PLLA composite biomaterial with mechanical characteristics close to the natural bone tissue can be obtained by hot pressing procedure. Effects of synthesis and compacting on the structure and characteristics of the HAp/PLLA composite biomaterial were studied in this work. Using wade angle X-ray structural analyses (WAXS), differentially scanning calorimetry (DSC), thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) and infrared (IR) spectroscopy, the changes occurring in the material during synthesis and hot pressing were monitored. Surface microstructure was analyzed by scanning electronic microscopy (SEM) coupled with electron-dispersion analysis (EDX). The results obtained indicate a possible decrease in the degree of crystallinity with hot pressing time increase. A block of HAp/PLLA composite biomaterial with 1.6 times lower crystallinity of the polymer phase was obtained by hot pressing in a given time interval with a maximum of 60 minutes. Results of TG analysis show that PLLA stability decreases with increasing hot pressing time, and vice versa. IR study proved that neither destructive changes in constituents nor formation of new phases occurred during hot pressing.
