abstract = "With seven plays and one hundred and twenty-four theatre reviews, written
in twenty-five years of his life, Milutin Bojić was vitally connected to drama and
theater. He wrote historical dramas in verse - from heptameter, through symmetric
decasyllable to the trochaic symmetrical dodecasyllable, from which he created a
new verse of Serbian drama and social drama in prose. Miodrag Pavlović praises
his historical dramas, and Jovan Hristić his social dramas. He followed every
theatrical performance in Belgrade and his theatre criticism provides an insight
into the theatrical life of Belgrade before World War I, and also reveals his poetic
principles. In historical dramas, he thematizes the Serbian Middle Ages and the
downfall of the Serbian despotism, distancing himself from the epic tradition and
idealized images of the most powerful Serbian rulers (King Milutin, Tsar Dusan),
writing even the comedy Uroš’s Marriage about the circumstances at the court of
the most powerful Serbian tsar. Bojić had a developed sense for history, the need
to establish continuity with the Middle Ages and the Byzantine tradition; he had a
gift for irony and comedy, for the intertwining of the comic and the “serious”. His
social drama Queen Olga, written in prose, deserves special attention. The paper
is mostly written as the author’s critical dialogue with insights and assessments of
Jovan Hristić. Bojić’s untimely death interrupted the development of one of the
greatest talents in drama, but Milutin Bojić remains a great ring in the precious
series of Serbian poets who were prominent playwrights: Sterija, Njegoš, Đura
Jakšić, Laza Kostić, Milutin Bojić, Ljubomir Simović.,
