The compilation of words by Jovan Balugdzic entitled Srbske reči (in English: Serbian words) (1848) is the forerunner of voluminous compilation activities that took place under the auspices of The Serbian Academy
of Sciences and Arts, especially since 1893, when the Lexicographical department stepped into this role. Having a rather complex composition, Balugdzic’s compilation includes a number of words that belong to the general lexical fund, a few words with pejorative meanings, a few terminological lexemes (ајкача, вашацъ, десетићъ, дрекъetc.) characteristic of the Srem environment from the end of the first half of the 19thcentury, which is its most important part. As for its methodological aspect, it relies on Vuk’s Srpski rječnik (in English: The Serbian Dictionary) and in a certain way it represents amodest addition to it. Balugdzic noticed the existence
of phraseological unity in certain words (for example, in the word логом: „нележилогомъ, т. є. ниєпао у креветъ, негоодећинеможе”), which undoubtedly reveals his lexicographical giftedness.
The compilation of words by Damjan Preradovic Nekoliko srpskih reči kojih nema u Vukovu rečniku (in English: A few Serbian words missing from Vuk’s dictionary) (1895) is somewhat ‘looser’, broader, and that lexicographical tightness that is present in Balugdzic’s compilation cannot be found in it. Methodologically also based on Vuk’s Srpski rječnik, it is more oriented towards ethnographical content - Preradovic aimed at an ethnographical amendment of Vuk’s lexicon, that is at completing it with ethnographical content, and this is the main characteristic of his lexical compilation from Srem. The central part of Preradovic’s compilation is dedicated tothe lexis of games, especially children’s games (пиљање, елечкиње or ерлечкиње, кошање, прескок etc.) and is accompanied by less known lexis from Sremtypical of these games. In addition to a few lexemes that belong to the general lexical fund, Preradovic’s compilationalso contains a small number of botanical
terms (јагањичак or јагањчевина, каљак, кариџа etc.).
Designed in a different way and with varied lexical content, these compilations include some aspects of the lexicon of Srem, which was apparently in active use during the 19th century. As reliable and valid sources, the greater part of Balugdzic’s and Preradovic’s word compilation sentered into Rečnik srpskih govora
Vojvodine (in English: The Dictionary of Serbian Dialects of Vojvodina); for Rečnik SANU (In English: The Dictionary of the Serbian Academy of Sciences and Arts) (as a work that also represents provincial lexis), they also represent an important lexicographical testimony, among numerous other manuscript compilations
from Vojvodina.",
