Jovan Dučić (1871–1943) saw the first play in his life – Boj na Kosovu (The Kosovo Battle) – in
Mostar, in the summer of 1884. He later joined Srpsko Pjevačko Društvo Gusle (The Serbian Society
Gusle), whose drama section was very active. In Society Gusle he acted, recited, and practiced his
rhetorical skills writing speeches and having debates. At the first Saint Sava celebration in Mostar
in 1887, he had his first acting role in Subotić᾽s play Krst i kruna (Cross and Crown), playing the
Prologue, dressed in a folk costume. As a contributor and editor of Zora he wrote about theatre and
acting. He believed that the three playwrights: Sophocles, Shakespeare and Ibsen represented the
whole world drama. On the occasion of the coronation of Petar I Karađorđević on 8 September 1904
in Belgrade he wrote a poem Krunisanje Dušanovo (Coronation of Dušan) and a verses Apoteoza
Karađorđu (Apotheosis to Karađorđe), which were presented as part of a collage program Iz srpske
prošlosti (From the Serbian Past) on the stage of the National Theatre. There have been allegations
that he also wrote a play. However, it can be reliably concluded that Jovan Dučić did not write
plays. He never even mentioned that he wrote a play, although he sometimes did announce what
he was writing or what he would write, thus confirming that he did not write plays. From the age of
thirteen, from an early age, he enjoyed theatrical achievements, loved and understood theatrical art,
and contributed to its development in Mostar, and of course in Bosnia and Herzegovina. He was an
actor, a contributor and editor of the magazine Zora, but never a playwright.",
