AB - The recovery from the Second World War brought significant changes and the implementation of socialist ideology in Yugoslavia that went in parallel with the emancipation of women. This is particularly noticeable in the rise of women with university education and their enrolment in various occupations, such as construction engineering and architecture. The increased interest in pursuing architectural education among women has been rising since the 1950s, when they already represented 46% of total students at Belgrade University. The rebuilding of the country meant great urbanistic and architectural projects, with radical reconstruction and reconceptualization of cities and public spaces. Young female architects embraced an opportunity to be equally involved and active in urban development. Their roles and impacts were diverse: they held positions within planning institutes, architectural bureaus, and public offices in urbanism and construction; furthermore, they were responsible engineers at the construction sites; and they became teachers and educators for the new generations of architects and civil engineers. They worked individually, in pairs, and in teams, demonstrating the ability to be actively and equally involved in the profession in every possible aspect and domain. The research positions their roles and contributions within the broader framework of the process of female emancipation in socialist Yugoslavia, focusing on three remarkable architects engaged in the postwar reconstruction of Novi Sad: Julka Majtan, Tatjana Vanjifatov Savić, and Milena Đorđević.

AB - The concept of cultural routes has evolved significantly through the years, often outlining the interactive, synergetic, and sustainable character of such complex tourist products. The success and development of various cultural routes went in line with specialization trends in the tourism sector. Allowing diversity and certain flexibility, it provided opportunities for synergetic relations
between nature, culture, and living societies, being in line with the sustainable development
agenda. Apart from the growing specialization and diversification of tourist products, the
development of cultural routes is also in line with current lifestyle trends that shape tourist
behaviors towards the concept of “active tourism”, “slow tourism” and/or “solo tourism” having in
mind the global trend towards more active individualist society. Cultural routes usually provide
specially designed “tailor-made” products, a variety of information and digital support and tools available for tourists to provide quality information and experiences: maps and tourist guides, accommodation lists and ratings, information on destinations and attractions, useful advice, traveler networks, and blogs, etc. However, its functionality and success are of a more complex nature compared to standard tourist products. The cultural route programs mostly develop in a form of destination networks and projects and highly rely on the enthusiasm and organizational capacities of the organizations that are dedicated to its development and functionality. This study examines the synergetic effects of various tourism concepts and presents successful
management practices in the creation process of the European cultural route “Sultan’s Trail” as
long-distance hiking and cycling destination, applying sustainable tourism practices to
underdeveloped and still undiscovered but attractive region, the Balkans. The aim is to highlight
the synergies between common philosophy and tourist promotion, safeguarding and
conservation of heritage, and enhancing the economic, social, and cultural well-being of tourists and local communities (user’s perspective). It also outlines some challenges and opportunities foreseen from the local perspective, and some issues to overcome in the future from the developer’s perspective.

AB - Examination of tourist behaviour during and after the crisis is of great importance for understanding and coping with the harmful effects of the crisis. The study aims to discover the impact of perceived risks, health status, and travel experience on proximal travel intentions during the Covid-19 outbreak. Perceived risks that coronavirus brought reshaped the collective awareness and altered typical travel habits. The research involved 1109 respondents from four Balkan countries who participated in an online survey at the first peak of the pandemic (April 2020). According to the results, perceived risk negatively influenced travel intentions. The study presumed the positive influence of previous travel experience on travel intentions and indicated its negative impact
on risk perception. Results showed that subjective health condition positively affected travel intention and had no significant effect on risk perception. The profound uncertainty that the tourism sector experienced is primarily reflected in an immense
impact on the travel possibilities and changes in tourist preferences. This study offers an insight into peoples’ travel intentions influenced by a global health crisis, reflecting specific risk negation when it comes to the timing of after-crisis travel plans.

AB - The Serbian economy went through a difficult transition period, and as a result of the transition a new ownership structure of the company was obtained, a changed economic structure (development of the real sector of the economy neglected), as well as uneven investments compared to the previous allocation of economic capacities. This has contributed to greater regional inequality in the territory of the Republic, as well as increased regional polarization in Vojvodina. Economic activity has not been revitalized in all parts of Vojvodina equally, which has led to impoverishment of the population and demographic emptying of some parts. On the other hand, the concentration of economic activities in one of the territorial poles (in the South-Bačka area) widens the gap between the regions and creates preconditions for further strengthening of economic disparities in Vojvodina. The aim of the paper is to analyze, through the analysis of economic and social elements, what are the differences of regional development between statistical regions in Vojvodina, ie to determine what changes have occurred during the transition processes and to propose activities for overcoming regional inequality in Vojvodina. The results of the research represent the synthesis of information obtained by using secondary data sources, applying mathematical and statistical methods and comparing development factors between 2001 and 2018.

AB - Cultural routes as a contemporary approach in the presentation and preservation of cultural heritage while envisioning the sustainable tourism development principles has recently obtained considerable popularity. The establishment of cultural routes is widely seen as a successful tool for bridging distant places and people in recognizing their joint interests in preserving and utilizing cultural heritage while enhancing tourism offer. Ottoman heritage in Europe is considered somewhat a contested heritage, as it still represents a materialized manifestation of the complex social, ideological, and
political contexts of national identities and contemporary societies. Thus, it is significant to explore perceptions of tangible
and intangible heritage in different countries networked within the cultural route and their common goal in raising locals’
awareness, outlining the importance and capitalizing on their shared heritage through tourism. This work presents partial
results of wider research aimed at the identification of overall perceptions regarding Ottoman heritage in different European
countries and examination of general attitudes towards the development of the Sultans Trail cultural route stretching from Vienna to Istanbul. In the pilot stage of the research, we were addressing youth, in particular university students, examining their knowledge, attitudes and opinions concerning Ottoman heritage in their country and Europe. The online survey was directed to students at different Universities in participating countries - Serbia, Bulgaria, Croatia, Hungary, Austria and Turkey. Non-probability sampling was applied using a combination of purposive, quota and snowball techniques. Questions related to Ottoman heritage in Europe and a cultural route development perspective, meanings, preservation levels, attractiveness, problems and potentials were included. Preliminary results indicate differences in perception of Ottoman heritage among different countries, outlining the potential difficulties in the cultural route development process and strong resistance among some student groups in recognizing Ottoman heritage as a common heritage within national space.

AB - The chapter discusses the issues of the gradual transformation of low-density areas to spaces with predominant tourism function reflected in the expansion of second-homes. It attempts to identify a possible interrelation between the rural diversification process and the expansion of second-home tourism. For this purpose, a sample of 55 small villages in Southern and Eastern Serbia was investigated. The goal was to identify why these villages experience different fate, ranging from those that are likely to be ultimately abandoned to those gradually becoming seasonal “tourist” villages. The research utilized qualitative (observations and semi-structured interviews with permanent and seasonal residents) and quantitative data (official statistics of secondary sources). The findings from the field research enabled the creation of a framework for evaluating tourism development potential and existing rural capital. Additionally, statistical tests (correlations and regressions), in the identification of factors affecting the diversification of rural space, were performed. The study confirmed that small peripheral villages with seasonal vitality characteristics show economic reorientation toward the service sector. Expansion of second-home tourism and initiation of rural diversification process gives a hope that these villages may be sustained for the future.

AB - This study examines the relationship between environmental attitudes and human value sets in forming an eco-tourist market segment within the European region. Different studies indicated that environmental attitudes reflected in general motivations were closely and positively related. Some findings showed that the examination of environmental attitudes that concern psychological factors (motivation) could be more powerful and meaningful than socio-demographic characteristics. The purpose of this study is to examine if human values that indicate basic motivational aspects, when inter-related with high environmental sensibility shared by different people from Europe, could be used for the creation of a specific market segmentation model. The findings identified three main factors that determine tourist values, while at the same time, the multiple discriminant analysis indicated the existence of several clusters, allowing for an identification of ‘eco-friendly’ tourist segments. By using data collections from the European Social Survey, the model also allowed comparability between surveyed countries by crosschecking multiple psycho-sociological and demographic factors, focusing on the environmentally sensitive groups, the so-called ‘eco-careful’ (hard) and ‘eco-sensible’ (soft) tourists. Furthermore, the study looked at potential demand markets that are interested in preserved nature, recreation, and adventure tours. The study confirmed that basic human values play an important role in explaining motivation aspects in tourism-related choices.

AB - Recent tourism research showed that, due to the COVID-19 pandemic, various psychological aspects affected people’s decisions and travel behavior (Miao et al., 2021; Yang et al., 2020; Gössling et al., 2020). Tourism has never experienced such a global collapse, fiercely supported by governmental decisions in holding back all tourism-related activities. This research attempts to offer insights into a sounder understanding of tourist behavior and travel patterns by systematically identifying psychological manifestations reflected in the basic human value system. Using statistical tests, hypothesized group divide based on specific value sets related to safety and conformity and on the opposite travel needs, being embedded in the hierarchy of human values. The study further indicated that defined risk-related cluster groups have different sociodemographic characteristics and geographical distribution.

AB - There are different aspects of perceptions of tourism sustainability. Yet, studies are limited in putting the focus on policy enablers’ perceptions. In this line, the policymakers represent those who contribute to managing and controlling tourism destination development. The aim of the paper is to identify the level of sustainability of tourism destinations in Serbia from a policy perspective (such as governmental bodies, contributors to management strategies, tourist organizations, etc.). By identifying the main tourism impacts from the three-pillar sustainability dimension, the research determines destinations’ operating sustainability. Based on a multi-staged methodology, data was collected by using a qualitative method (expert's judgment and content analysis of the existing strategic tourism development documents) and a quantitative method (219 half-structured deep interviews). A model is proposed that posts directions for the systematic organization of policymakers to infer conclusions on the current state of well-being of tourism destinations. Such a model enables a thorough assessment of the progress of sustainability, thus initiating strategic tourism development reforms.

AB - Memorials as architectural objects condensed in their programs various functions directed to the building collective consciousness, memory, and ideology. Precisely the strong ideological background and fundamental associations to the previous federal-state caused Yugoslav memorial heritage to become especially vulnerable and marginalized in contemporary society. Even though nowadays society recognizes them as political symbols of the “problematic” socialist past, their true symbolism rests on firm historical foundations. The digital age has opened up a new approach to perceiving their values. Free of their initial contexts, these monuments started to lose their original functions and meanings. Their aesthetic or scenic quality prevails in
building new, media-based narratives, which results in emergence of radically different social relations to heritage itself. This paper presents the problems of the development of new, non-traditional functions of the Yugoslav monumental heritage, generated during their digital promotion, commercialization, and even fetishization and banalisation. Memorials and memorial complexes, created as representatives of freedom, human sacrifices, power, success, unity, eternity, became separated from their initial contexts, removing their original values
in the process of contemporary reutilization. This raises ethical issues regarding their “exploitation”, proper interpretation, promotion, and presentation in global digital contexts

AB - Youth tourism is a fast-growing and increasingly important
segment of the global tourism market. Youth traveler’s preferences in the
Balkan region are still insufficiently explored. The crisis caused by the
Covid-19 virus has had a significant impact on tourism and it will bring
long-term changes to travel patterns. The aim of the paper is to determine
the impact of the Covid-19 crisis on the future travel plans of young people.
The research included 462 respondents from the three Balkan countries:
Serbia, Croatia and Bosnia and Herzegovina which participated in online
survey during the crisis peak. The literature review and the first part of the
research will point out the usual travel preferences of young people. The
second part of the research will show the travel plans of young people after
the end of the crisis and the differences among them in the three analyzed
countries. The results of the research will fill the gap in the research of
the youth tourism segment and their reaction to the crisis, but it also
could serve as a guide for the public and private sector in order to help the
creating of incentives for travel and designing an attractive tourist offer to
young people.

AB - This is a study about inter-ethnic marriages between the members of two antagonistic nations in the Western Balkans: Serbian and Albanian. The first part of the paper describes the geographical and socio-cultural framework of the research, along with presenting key historical factors that have contributed to the long-lasting antagonism between the above-mentioned ethnic groups. The second part of the paper is an analysis of media coverage of inter-ethnic marriages between Serbian men and Albanian women. By depicting the socio-cultural context in which these "ordinary" people have founded their marriages, some gender-related issues were opened and the binding of various historical, cultural, and demographic factors that are reflected in the lives of the “invisible” Albanian women in Serbia was shown. Their “invisibility” and marginalization have been deepened by the absence of their administrative status in Serbia, the absence of the right to healthcare, social protection, and the complete economic dependence on a man/husband. As a result of this, the marginalization, invisibility, and submission of these women to the will of their husbands is another example of the reproduction of strong patriarchy in the Western Balkans in the 21st century.

AB - Being the basic need of humans, but also an attractive element of the tourist offer, gastronomy is related to the attractiveness of a destination, and Balkan gastronomy is considered to be one of the most positive aspects of the tourist image of the region. This study aims to investigate the locals' perception of gastronomic specificity of ‘Balkan food’ and national (local) food as well. Furthermore, the study investigated how ‘Balkan food’ is perceived in terms of its tourist potential, uniqueness, quality, nutrition and its general role in the creation of a joint ‘Balkan’ tourist brand. The methodology included a historical approach and a survey which involved110 respondents. Out of 21 traditional dishes identified in the official tourist promotional activities of selected countries and a review of the relevant literature, the following are identified as regional ‘Balkan’ dishes: ‘pečenje’, ‘musaka’, ‘ćevapi’ and ‘sarma’. The following are identified as national dishes: ‘pastrmajlija’, ‘sogan dolma’, ‘raštan’, ‘pašticada’, ‘burek’ and ‘svadbarski kupus’. The results indicated that some nations have specific knowledge of certain dishes being considered national and regionally present, while other nations show a lack of knowledge of food origin and regional presence in identified countries. Furthermore, the results showed that different dimensions of Balkan cuisine significantly contribute to the tourist potential of the region, while the contribution of its nutritive characteristics is perceived as less important. Results showed that ‘Balkan food’ is considered to be important for the improvement of the ‘Balkans'’ image and promotion, as well as important for the creation of the regional tourism brand.

AB - The purpose of this study was to examine if human values sets indicating basic motivational aspects, shared by active sport participants, could be used for the creation of a specific market segmentation model. While the exploration of motivation scales and sport tourist typologies was vast, although limited to small samples, this research constructed a model that tested its applicability and validity on the large general samples. By using data collections from the European Social Survey, the model allowed comparability between surveyed countries by cross-checking multiple psychosocial and demographic factors. The findings identified four main factors that determine active sport tourist values, while at the same time, multiple-discriminant analysis indicated the existence of three active sport clusters, indicating preferences of different sport tourist segments. Furthermore, the study analyzed potential demand markets according to the geographical distribution of active sport segments. The study confirmed that basic human values play an important role in explaining motivation aspects in sport- and tourism-related choices. Overall, the findings may assist marketers in monitoring changes in preferences of sport participants and focus on specific marketing strategies for different segments.

AB - Rural tourism offers opportunity to local communities to oppose the process of rural abandonment. This study assesses the tourism potential of two almost depopulated villages in Serbia, Gostuša (Pirot) and Poganovo (Dimitrovgrad), and identifies their second-home tourism perspectives. They have similar geo-demographic characteristics, but different development patterns. A practical understanding of residents' perception was gained along with identifying the socioeconomic indicators. A comprehensive comparison is made to identify the diversification level of the rural economy in these villages. The study also assesses the rural capital and concludes that it is not realistic to expect fast and sustainable tourism development in these peripheral rural areas. Finally, the study extracts the factors of influence and predicts trends of the diversification process and second-home tourism expansion in rural areas of Balkan Mt.

AB - Sustainability of tourism destinations has become the main focus in planning and managing tourism development. Despite existing legislation and an institutional framework to safeguard balanced tourism growth, many destinations fail to properly address it. So far, studies are limited in exploring sustainable tourism impacts from a policy perspective. This study follows previous ones in using the triple bottom line sustainability approach to define tourism impacts. It argues, in particular, for a nexus between understanding of policy perception and sustainability, and it applies this to tourist destinations in Serbia to determine whether they are operating sustainably. For this purpose, the data were collected using a combination of multiple methods, involving interviews with policymakers and content analysis of strategic documents. This study further suggests a model that assesses the extent of the sustainability of tourist destinations. The results illustrate the importance of understanding policy perceptions in shaping and facilitating sustainability and informing policy enablers on how to improve and reform current tourism development. The model can be adopted and applied to any tourist destination facing an inevitable need to re-shape their tourism development plans and policies, while the implications address the need to build a participative policy approach to sustainable tourism development.

AB - Cvijić’s observations concerning the problems of the geopolitical and socio-economic position of the Balkans, with particular emphasis on regional ties with the West and East, transversal and longitudinal roads, civilization zones, ethnological and psychological characteristics of the people, migration movements, etc. are even now of exceptional value and can be used for the explanation of contemporary issues in society. Herewith, we will try to indicate that the considerations on the importance of the cultural exchange, civilizational impacts and cultural transmission roads are present and discussed in the book La péninsule balkanique —géographie humaine (Balkan Peninsula: human geography) of Jovan Cvijić. We also indicate that in a certain way, he gave the basis for defining contemporary cultural routes of South East Europe (the Balkans). In particular, comparative analysis of the distribution of Cvijić’s civilization zones and transversal and longitudinal roads through which different civilizations made their impact with recently created Cultural corridors of South East Europe, some direct parallels can be extracted and commented. Furthermore, some issues related to the process of thematically defining and the inclusion of countries and certain historic sites to the cultural routes are also discussed.

jačanje konkurentnosti i podizanje kvaliteta ponude, povećanje publiciteta i izgradnju imidža mesta/manifestacije i drugo.
Takođe, posetioci manifestacija su izloženi delovanju i nekih drugih negativnih pojava: džeparenja, krađe, zaraze, prevare prilikom menjanja novca, ponuda psihoaktivnih supstanci i drugih nevolja.
Proaktivan pristup bezbednosti na festivalu omogućiće veće zadovoljstvo posetilaca, bržu izgradnju brenda i dugoročan kontinuitet održavanja same manifestacije. Generalno, rezultati pokazuju da bezbednost turistâ predstavlja vodeći faktor konkurentnosti kako manifestacije tako i same turističke destinacije.
