AB  - Dense calcium phosphate-based ceramics were fabricated to be used as targets for pulsed laser deposition (PLD). Nanostructured cobalt-substituted hydroxyapatite (Co:HAP) was used as a starting powder. To vary phase composition and microstructure of targets, two sintering approaches were applied, conventional (CS) and two-step sintering (TSS). The obtained results show that in both cases biphasic calcium phosphate (BCP) ceramics (targets) were prepared, with slightly different HAP-to-β–TCP amount ratio and a significantly different microstructure. While the CS method yielded fully dense ceramics with an average grain size of 1.3 μm, the ceramics prepared by TSS had a density of 98.5%, with a predominant grain size below 100 nm. (Ca + Co)P coatings were prepared by PLD of (Ca + Co)P targets. The temperature of the Ti substrate was adjusted to be 25 and 500 °C. The results show that the phase composition of (Ca + Co)P coatings depended on the phase composition of targets as well as on the temperature of the Ti substrate. The coating prepared at 25 °C using CS target consisted of three calcium phosphate phases, HAP, β–TCP and α–TCP; when the TSS target was used, the coating was biphasic, containing HAP and β–TCP. When the substrate was heated to 500 °C, regardless of whether the CS or the TSS target was used, the deposited coatings were composed of HAP and α–TCP. Due to different phase compositions, the (Ca + Co)P coatings deposited at 25 °C showed an improved hardness compared to those deposited at 500 °C. The obtained results confirmed that the phase composition, morphology and mechanical properties of 0.3 μm thick (Ca + Co)P coatings on a Ti substrate can be tailored by employing (Ca + Co)P targets with different microstructures, and also by varying the temperature of the Ti substrate during deposition experiments.

AB  - In this paper, we report the mild sonochemical synthesis of hexagonal (β) NaYF4:Yb,Er mesocrystals at low temperature of 40 °C. The nucleation and transformation of crystal structures is investigated in the course of time, and it is shown that the pure β phase is obtained after 2 h of pulsed sonication. The crystallization of orthorhombic YF3:Yb,Er and cubic (α) NaYF4:Yb,Er precedes the appearance of a thermodynamically stable β NaYF4:Yb,Er phase. Based on the evolution of the nanoparticle morphology, it is concluded that the transition from α to β phase is consistent with the dissolution-recrystallization process, while the final shape of mesocrystals is a consequence of the oriented attachment growth in the newly formed β phase nanocrystallites along two planes. The structural properties of all compounds are analyzed and correlated with their thermal and optical characteristics. The pump power dependence of green and red emissions confirms that only two-photon process is involved in up-conversion, which is superior in β phase mesocrystals.

AB  - In this paper, we report the mild sonochemical synthesis of hexagonal (β) NaYF4:Yb,Er mesocrystals at low temperature of 40 °C. The nucleation and transformation of crystal structures is investigated in the course of time, and it is shown that the pure β phase is obtained after 2 h of pulsed sonication. The crystallization of orthorhombic YF3:Yb,Er and cubic (α) NaYF4:Yb,Er precedes the appearance of a thermodynamically stable β NaYF4:Yb,Er phase. Based on the evolution of the nanoparticle morphology, it is concluded that the transition from α to β phase is consistent with the dissolution-recrystallization process, while the final shape of mesocrystals is a consequence of the oriented attachment growth in the newly formed β phase nanocrystallites along two planes. The structural properties of all compounds are analyzed and correlated with their thermal and optical characteristics. The pump power dependence of green and red emissions confirms that only two-photon process is involved in up-conversion, which is superior in β phase mesocrystals.

AB  - In this preliminary study, we applied the Multivariate Curve Resolution- Alternating Least Squares (MCR-ALS) method to analyze the excitation-emission matrices of multifloral honey samples, combined with differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) to estimate infection of honey bee colonies with N. ceranae or V. destructor. Fluorescence spectroscopy combined with MCR-ALS was used to determine the ratio of the spectral components originating from proteins (C1) and phenolics (C2), two minor but essential constituents of honey, as a ratiometric indicator of infection level in related hives. The C1/C2 ratio decreased linearly with the increase of infection in both N. ceranae and V. destructor cases, the R2 was 0.941 and 0.912, respectively. Additionally, DSC has shown that the magnitude of changes in sugar environments of the honey samples, reflected in sugar phase transitions, rises with increasing infection level in bee colonies. These results indicate that fluorescence combined with MCR-ALS could be used for rapid, non-destructive and cheap screening of honey to estimate the level of infection of honey bee colonies.

AB  - Nanostructured Fe2TiO5 (pseudobrookite), a mixed metal oxide material holds significant promise for utilization in energy and environmental applications. However, its full application is still hindered due to the difficulty to synthesize monophasic Fe2TiO5 with high crystallinity and a large specific surface area. Herein, Fe2TiO5 nanofibers were synthesized via a versatile and low-cost electrospinning method, followed by a calcination process at different temperatures. We found a significant effect of the calcination process and its duration on the crystalline phase in the form of either pseudobrookite or pseudobrookite–hematite–rutile and the morphology of calcined nanofibers. The crystallite size increased whereas the specific surface area decreased with an increase in calcination temperature. At higher temperatures, the growth of Fe2TiO5 nanoparticles and simultaneous coalescence of small particles was noted. The highest specific surface area was obtained for the sample calcined at 500 °C for 6 h (SBET = 64.4 m2 g−1). This work opens new opportunities in the synthesis of Fe2TiO5 nanostructures using the electrospinning method and a subsequent optimized calcination process for energy-related applications.

BT/ZnO composite materials with improved functional properties

AB  - Due to a high-power conversion efficiency (PCE), perovskite solar cells (PSCs) are the most developing area of research in the past decade. Although lead−based inorganic−organic PSCs has achieved the highest PCE of 25.2%, the toxic nature of lead and poor stability of organic components strongly limits its commercialization. This problem can be overcome by developing of inorganic perovskites with a high PCE. Barium titanate (BaTiO3, BT) belongs to the perovskite crystal structure materials with remarkable dielectric, ferroelectric and ferromagnetic properties. In this research, to enhance functional properties of BT we employed functionalization with MEMO silane followed by in-situ alloying with ZnO in different BT to ZnO wt.%. Synthesized ZnO@MEMO@BT composites were tested as photo- and photo-electro catalysts under simulated sunlight irradiation. An enhanced catalytic activity of ZnO@MEMO@BT composites, compared to pure BT is probably due to the modified binding energy and an optimized band structure. In order to investigate the origin of improved catalytic efficiency, pristine BT and composites were characterized using a variety of techniques, including X-ray powder diffraction (XRD), Raman and Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy, field emission scanning electron microscopy (FESEM), UV-Vis diffuse reflectance and photoluminescence spectroscopy. The enhanced photo(electro)catalytic activity of the composite materials can be attributed to the synergetic effect of the surface defects and the ZnO/BT heterojunction particles, which enabled charge separation, thereby hindering the recombination of photogenerated carriers.

AB  - Micro- and nano-sized core-shell particles for efficient photocatalysis were successfully synthesized by a two step wet-chemical route. The core composed of up-converting (UC) NaYF4:Yb,Tm phase was prepared through EDTA assisted hydrothermal process, while the shell of anatase TiO2 –Acetylacetone (TiO2-Acac) charge-transfer complex was formed via a sol-gel method. During coating, the effect of polyvinylpyrrolidone (PVP) addition on the core and shell coupling was investigated. Two forms of core structures were obtained: hexagonal microprisms of beta-NaYF4:Yb,Tm and alpha-NaYF4:Yb,Tm nanospheres, both coated with TiO2-Acac nanocrystals.

AB  - Freeze drying was compared with spray drying regarding feasibility to process wild thyme drug in order to obtain dry formulations at laboratory scale starting from liquid extracts produced by different extraction methods: maceration, heat-, ultrasound-, and microwave-assisted extractions. Higher powder yield (based on the dry weight prior to extraction) was achieved by freeze than spray drying and lower loss of total polyphenol content (TPC) and total flavonoid content (TFC) due to the drying process. Gelatin as a coating agent (5% w/w) provided better TPC recovery by 70% in case of lyophilization and higher powder yield in case of spray drying by diminishing material deposition on the wall of the drying chamber. The resulting gelatin-free and gelatin-containing powders carried polyphenols in amount ~190 and 53-75 mg gallic acid equivalents GAE/g of powder, respectively. Microwave-assisted extract formulation distinguished from others by higher content of polyphenols, proteins and sugars, higher bulk density and lower solubility. The type of the drying process affected mainly position of the gelatin-derived -OH and amide bands in FTIR spectra. Spray dried formulations compared to freeze dried expressed higher thermal stability as confirmed by differential scanning calorimetry analysis and higher diffusion coefficient; the last feature can be associated with the lower specific surface area of irregularly shaped freeze-dried particles (151-223 µm) compared to small microspheres (~8 µm) in spray-dried powder.

AB  - Amorphous calcium phosphate (ACP) is a material of high interest for dentistry, orthopedics, and other biomedical sectors. Being intrinsically metastable, the process of transformation of ACP into a crystalline phase upon heating is of high relevance for the development of innovative bioceramics. Here we have first studied the thermal behavior of a citrate-stabilized ACP (Cit-ACP) also doped with fluoride ions (Cit-FACP) prepared at three different nominal Cit/Ca ratios (i.e. 4, 2, 1) by differential thermal analysis. Next, the physico-chemical features of the crystalline products as well as the in vitro cell response to the materials were investigated. A citrate and fluoride free ACP sample was also tested as the blank. We have found that the activation energy of crystallization of Cit-(F)ACP samples is lower in comparison to the blank ACP and this is influenced by the nominal Cit/Ca molar ratio. Interestingly, we have discovered that the thermal treatment of Cit-(F)ACP at 800 °C yields hydroxyapatite (HA) or fluorapatite (FHA) as the main products differently from blank ACP that, like most of the ACPs reported in the literature, yields β-tricalcium phosphate. This was attributed to the Ca/P ratio of Cit-(F)ACP, which is similar to HA. A study of the crystalline products has revealed that all the (F)HA samples were non-cytotoxic, and retained carbonate ions in the crystal structure despite the heat treatment that should have induced decarbonation. The morphology of the products is influenced by the nominal Cit/Ca ratio and the presence of fluoride, ranging from spherical nanoparticles to micrometric hexagonal rods. Overall, our results prove that the thermal crystallization of Cit-(F)ACP is markedly different from classic ACP based materials and the thermal treatment of Cit-(F)ACP represents an attractive route for producing pure bioactive HA ceramics.

As-spun fibers were characterized by TG/DTA, Scanning Electron Microscopy and FT-IR spectroscopy analysis. X-ray diffraction and FT-IR spectroscopy analysis confirmed the formation of nickel manganite with a cubic spinel structure, while N2 physisorption at 77 K enabled determination of the BET specific surface area as 25.3 m2/g and (BJH) mesopore volume as 21.5 m2/g. The material constant (B) of the nanocrystalline nickel manganite fibers applied by drop-casting on test interdigitated electrodes on alumina substrate, dried at room temperature, was determined as 4379 K in the 20–50 °C temperature range and a temperature sensitivity of −4.95%/K at room temperature (25 °C). The change of impedance with relative humidity was monitored at 25 and 50 °C for a relative humidity (RH) change of 40 to 90% in the 42 Hzπ1 MHz frequency range. At 100 Hz and 25 °C, the sensitivity of 327.36 ± 80.12 kΩ/%RH was determined, showing that nickel manganite obtained by electrospinning has potential as a multifunctional material for combined humidity and temperature sensing.

AB  - Freeze drying was compared with spray drying regarding feasibility to process wild thyme drugs in order to obtain dry formulations at laboratory scale starting from liquid extracts produced by different extraction methods: maceration and heat-, ultrasound-, and microwave-assisted extractions. Higher total powder yield (based on the dry weight prior to extraction) was achieved by freeze than spray drying and lower loss of total polyphenol content (TPC) and total flavonoid content (TFC) due to the drying process. Gelatin as a coating agent (5% w/w) provided better TPC recovery by 70% in case of lyophilization and higher total powder yield in case of spray drying by diminishing material deposition on the wall of the drying chamber. The resulting gelatin-free and gelatin-containing powders carried polyphenols in amount ~190 and 53–75 mg gallic acid equivalents GAE/g of powder, respectively. Microwave-assisted extract formulation was distinguished from the others by a higher content of polyphenols, proteins and sugars, higher bulk density and lower solubility. The type of the drying process mainly affected the position of the gelatin-derived -OH and amide bands in FTIR spectra. Spray-dried formulations compared to freeze-dried expressed higher thermal stability as confirmed by differential scanning calorimetry analysis and a higher diffusion coefficient; the last feature can be associated with the lower specific surface area of irregularly shaped freeze-dried particles (151–223 µm) compared to small microspheres (~8 µm) in spray-dried powder.

AB  - Nanocrystalline Zn2SnO4/SnO2 powder was obtained by a solid state reaction of ZnO and SnO2 nanopowders mixed in the molar ratio 1:1. The phase composition of the obtained powder was studied by XRD and Raman spectroscopy, morphology and texture were characterized by FESEM, TEM, BET and Hg porosimetry, while XPS and FTIR spectroscopy were used to determine the surface chemistry. The influence of humidity on complex impedance was monitored on bulk samples in the relative humidity (RH) range 30–90% in a climatic chamber in the frequency range 42 Hz- 1 MHz at working temperatures of 25 and 50 °C. Change in RH had a significant influence on impedance reduction, especially noticeable in the lower frequency range, indicating potential application of this nanocomposite as a humidity sensing material. Increase in RH led to an increase in AC conductivity that changed with frequency according to the Jonscher power law. The frequency exponent decreased with increase in RH and sample temperature indicating that the correlated hopping barrier model is the dominant conduction mechanism. Complex impedance was analyzed using an equivalent circuit consisting of a parallel resistance and constant phase element, showing the dominant influence of grain boundaries at both working temperatures (25 and 50 °C). The resistance decreased, while the capacitance and relaxation frequency increased with increase in RH. At high humidity an added Wartburg element enabled modeling of the charge diffusion process

Gentiana root extract was spray dried using five different carriers (maltodextrin, whey protein, pectin, starch, gelatine) at various concentrations. Powders were characterized in terms of physical properties and encapsulation efficiency of bioactive compounds. The moisture content of all powders was between 1.78 and 3.46 %, and bulk density from 0.23 to 0.32 g/mL. Powders produced with maltodextrin and whey protein provided the highest yield (around 75 and 70 %, respectively) and the lowest hygroscopicity (6 and 7%, respectively). Gelatin and pectin provided powders with the highest encapsulation efficiency of total phenolic as well as the individual compounds. The stability of encapsulated bioactive compounds was studied after 6 months, and the most stable in all samples were gentiopicrin and sweroside with their content decreased by 10 % only. This study has shown that spray drying of gentian root extract produces powders with good physical properties and encapsulation of bioactives.

AB  - NiMn2O4, with a cubic spinel structure and numerous and various applications in modern technology, were synthesized with two synthetic routes: sol-gel combustion method with glycine as fuel and electrospinning method with polyvinylpyrrolidone (PVP). Both amorphous powders from sol-gel synthesis and as-spun fibers from electrospinning synthesis were calcined, electrospun fibers at 400 °C and the sol-gel synthesized powders at 800 °C. Electrospun fibers were previously characterized with DTA-TGA to investigate the influence of thermal process on a polymer fiber.
The obtained powders were characterized accordingly. Structural analysis was done via X-ray diffraction (XRD) and results show spinel structure with no impurity. The texture and morphology was investigated via N2 physisorption and transmission electron microscopy (TEM), respectively. Chemical states of elements were investigated by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). The electrochemical performance of the synthesized materials as supercapacitors was tested via cyclic voltammetry (CV), electric impedance spectroscopy (EIS), and chronopotentiometry (CP) to aquire galvanostatic charge-discharge (GCD) curves. Experiments were done in 6 M KOH solution with nickel foam as a working electrode. The results show good electrochemical capacity circa 200 F/g, with the potential for further structural improvement of the materials.

The core composed of up-converting (UC) NaYF4:Yb,Tm phase was prepared through EDTA assisted hydrothermal process, while the shell of anatase TiO2 –Acetylacetone (TiO2-Acac) charge-transfer complex was formed via a sol-gel method. During coating, the effect of polyvinylpyrrolidone (PVP) addition on the core and shell coupling was investigated. Two forms of core structures were obtained: hexagonal microprisms of -NaYF4:Yb,Tm and -NaYF4:Yb,Tm nanospheres, both coated with TiO2-Acac nanocrystals.

AB  - The aim of this research was to improve photo(electro)catalytic properties of BaTi1-xSnx (BTS, x = 0, 0.05, 0.10) powders. For that purpose we employed ZnO to prepare ZnO@BTS composite. In situ microwave processing of a ZnO precipitate on previously synthesized BTS particles was used to produce ZnO@BTS composites. The phase composition and crystal structure of BTS, ZnO and ZnO@BTS were examined by X-ray powder diffraction (XRD) and Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR). The powders particles morphology was investigated by field emission scanning electron microscopy (FESEM). The optical properties were studied using UV-Vis diffuse reflectance (DRS) and photoluminescence spectroscopy (PL). Linear voltammetry was used to examine the photoelectrochemical properties of the materials. Photocatalytic properties were tested based on the decolorization of methylene blue (MB) dye in the presence of powder particles, under the influence of simulated sunlight radiation. BTS powders have good electron transfer properties, which has been shown in their function as electrocatalysts, where they have shown better properties than ZnO and ZnO@BTS composites. In contrast, they showed poor photocatalytic efficacy. The precipitation of ZnO particles on BTS, by the method of microwave processing,
significantly improves the photocatalytic efficiency of the formed composites, concerning the starting BTS powders. Among the composites, ZnO@BT composite proved to be the most effective photocatalyst.

AB  - Roots of the willow gentian (Gentiana asclepiadea L., Gentianaceae) are used in folk medicine to treat gastrointestinal diseases.Spray drying is the most commonly used technique for microencapsulation of plant extracts in the pharmaceutical, cosmetic and food industries. The choosing of suitable carriers is one of the critical points in the development of microencapsulated powder with the desired physicochemical properties.The extract of the willow gentian roots was spray-dried using different carriers (maltodextrin (MD) and whey protein (WP)at concentrations of 20, 40, and 60%; pectin (P), starch (S), and gelatin (G) at concentrations of 2.5, 5, and 7.5%).The aim of this study was to examine the ability of the obtained powdersto dissolveand absorb water.For this purpose, the values of water solubility (WSI) and water absorption index (WAI) were determined.WSI is a measure of the powder degradation and dissolving in water, while WAI represents an indicator of water absorption ability. It is desirable that instant tea powders show high WSI and low WAI values.WSI values ranged from 71.15% (7.5% P) to 91.94% (7.5% G) indicating good powder disintegration properties. Concentration-dependent decrease in WSI values was observed for WP, P and S, while the opposite trend was observed in the case of MD.The carrier-free powdershowed relatively low WAI value (13.32%). Powders with 20% MD and 5% S showed slightly lower WAI values (12.77 and 12.72%, respectively). On the other hand, powders with 5 and 7.5% P showed remarkably high WAI values of 91.59 and 91.49%, respectively. A concentration-dependent increase in WAI was observed in powders encapsulated withMD and WP.All encapsulated powders showed acceptable disintegration properties (high WSI), while in terms of water absorption (low WAI) powders with 20% MD and 5% S were the most suitable.

AB  - Due to tunable opto-electronic properties ZnO-based nanoparticles (ZnONPs) have been used for application in electronics, optoelectronics, photo(electro)catalysis, etc. Besides, as bio-inert, ZnONPs have a great potential in medicine for biosensing, bioimaging, drug and gene delivery, implants or as antimicrobial and anticancer agents. One of suggested governing mechanism of the biological activities of ZnONPs is based on the formation of reactive oxygen species (ROS). Actually, when ZnONP absorb photon with energy equal or greater than its band gap, electrons (e−) are excited from the valence band (VB) to the conduction band (CB) leaving the holes (h+) in VB. In following, the photogenerated h+ and e− migrate from bulk to surface. The photogenerated h+ at the VB react with water molecules adsorbed at the particle surface to produce hydroxyl radicals (OH•), while e− in CB react with oxygen molecules generating anionic superoxide radicals (O2−•). Radicals can be transformed in highly reactive hydroxyl radicals and so on. Derivatives of this active oxygen can damage the bacterial/tumor cells. However, in sufficiency ROS can damage normal cells as well. Thus, an understanding of ZnONPs crystal structure-activity relationship is crucial for the design of materials safe for application in treating diseases like cancer. In this study we established correlation between the surface-to-bulk defects ratio in ZnONPs and ROS formation. To vary surface-to-bulk defects ratio, series of ZnONP samples were synthesized by microwave processing of precipitate in the presence of a different amount (5, 10 and 20 wt.%) of surfactants, precisely, CTAB and citric acid. The particles crystallinity and phase purity were investigated by X-ray diffraction, Raman and FTIR spectroscopy. The particles morphology and texture properties were observed with FE–SEM and BET, respectively. The optical properties were studied using UV–Vis DRS and PL spectroscopy. ZnONP samples with different surface-to-bulk defect ratio were examined on ROS formation. Surface-to-bulk defect ratio in ZnONP was correlated with ROS formation, besides; their influence on cytotoxicity to normal and cancerous cells was comprehended.

AB  - The newer methods of electric arc furnace dust (EAFD) valorisation include its stabilization into materials which potentially can be used in construction. This is the most promising method because of the low costs and waste reduction. The purpose of these study was to investigate the properties of alkali activated cement (AAC) based on fly ash (FA) or steelmaking electric arc furnace slag (EAFS) as an agent fora stabilization/solidification of EAFD. The control type of AAC samples were prepared by mixing of solid precursor (FA or EAFS) with a mixture of 10 M NaOH and Na2SiO3 solutions followed by curing at in the oven for 48 h at 65 C. The samples of AAC doped with EAFD were prepared at the same conditions but the EAFD was added to the starting mixtures with FA in quantities of 10, 20 and 30% of total solid phase and 1, 2, 5 and 7 % of total EAFS solid phase. The results have shown that both, FA and EAFS can be successfully used as an agent for EAFD stabilization. AAC samples based of FA and EAFS exhibited strength which is suitable for both, landfill and construction applications. Stabilization of EAFD into the AAC matrix occurred by chemical and physical immobilization. Chemical immobilization of Zn into the reaction product of FA and EAFS alkali activation was confirmed by SEM/EDS investigations. The leaching of Zn from both, AAC matrix based on FA and EAFS is inferior in comparison to pristine EAFD and met the criteria for granular waste disposal at landfills for non-hazardous waste according the EN 12457-2 test.

Dilatometric study of the ZnTiO3 phase transition kinetic influenced by nano powder sintering

AB  - Sintering is often accompanied with phase transition. Phase transition kinetic is thus
hard to deconvolute due to the superposition of the sintering and phase transition dimensional
change phenomena. Metastabile perovskite phase ZnTiO3 reforms to stabile spinel Zn2TiO4 at
950°C with high kinetic rate. Dimensional change during heating of ZnTiO3 nano powder
compacts up to 1050°C was monitored using dilatometric thermo mechanical analyzer TMA
model SETSYS Evolution. Shrinkage of simultaneous sintering and phase transition were
recorded. The obtained non-isothermally sintered specimens were then second run treated
with same schedule. Sintering phenomenon of the ZnTiO3 nanopowder compact was also
recorded up to 900°C with isothermal holding of 25 minutes. Here phase transition was
avoided with lower temperature and isothermal holding. Second run heating, of isothermally
obtained specimens at 900°C, was recorded with non-isothermal heating schedule to 1050°C.
This has led to the dilatometric curve record of the ZnTiO3 phase transition in polycrystalline
bulk specimen, now recorded without sintering. In such a manner when kinetic is complex,
the separation of phenomena such as sintering, linear expansion and phase transition are
leading to the knowledge of their mutual interconnected relations. Also application of
mathematical operations on dilatometric data leads to the established procedure for the
sintering and phase transition data treatment.
