AB - Ceramic/polymer composites can be chemically stable, mechanically strong, and flexible, which make them candidates for electric devices, such as pressure or temperature sensors, energy storage or harvesting devices, actuators, and so forth. Depending on the application, various electrical properties are of importance. Polymers usually have low dielectric permittivity, but increased dielectric permittivity can be achieved by the addition of the ceramic fillers with high dielectric constant. With the aim to enhance dielectric properties of the composite without loss of flexibility, 5 wt% of BaTiO3-Fe2O3 powder was added into a polyvinylidene fluoride matrix. The powder was prepared by different synthesis conditions to produce core/shell structures. The effect of the phase composition and morphology of the BaTiO3-Fe2O3 core/shell filler on the structure and lattice dynamics of the polymer composites was investigated. Based on the results of the thermal analysis, various parameters of ceramic/polymer composites were determined. Differences in the phase composition and morphology of the filler have an influence on the formation of various polyvinylidene fluoride allomorphs and the degree of crystallinity. Furthermore, the dielectric performances of pure polyvinylidene fluoride and the polymer/ceramic composites were measured.

AB - Magnesium titanate ceramics were prepared by reactive spark plasma sintering (SPS) at 1200 °C for 5 min. Prior to sintering, MgO and TiO2 powders were mixed by high energy ball milling (HEBM) for 15, 30, or 60 min. The effect of milling time on phase composition was analyzed by X-ray diffraction (XRD) for milled powders and sintered specimens. The morphology of the sintered ceramics was investigated by scanning electron microscopy (SEM), while elemental distribution was determined by energy dispersive spectroscopy (EDS). The presence of the MgTi2O5 phase was detected in XRD and was confirmed by EDS analysis. Microcracking was observed for specimens prepared with longer milling times and attributed to the coefficient of thermal expansion (CTE) mismatch dominantly due to the anisotropic crystal structure of MgTiO3 phase. The sample milled for 15 min showed the highest Vickers hardness due to less or no microcracking and nearly full density. The dielectric measurements in the range of 10 Hz–250 MHz demonstrated extremely high dielectric permittivity, as high as 104 at 1 kHz. An increase in loss tangents was observed due to oxygen vacancy formation, which was promoted by the vacuum environment during SPS. Oxygen vacancy-related dielectric relaxation was also detected and explained.

AB - Suspended viable cells significantly influence the relative complex permittivity (dielectric constant) of the suspension. This influence depends on the concentration, viability, size, and even the cell shape. Hence, by measuring the permittivity, various fermentation processes can be monitored (e.g., in wine making and preparation of milk products). Thereby, the complex impedance (or admittance) between electrodes immersed into the suspension is measured and the permittivity is obtained by a suitable de-embedding procedure.
There exist various data in the literature on this influence, but they do not provide sufficient information for wide implementation of the technique. The aim of the paper was to experimentally investigate various aspects of the measurement procedures and establish practical guidelines and limitations.
Measurements were performed using an LCR meter, a classical vector network analyzer, and a nanoVNA analyzer, in the frequency range from 10 Hz to 100 MHz. Various suspension containers and systems of electrodes were designed and manufactured.
Bipolar systems of electrodes were found to be more suitable for higher frequencies than tetrapolar ones. Open electrode systems were found to be more prone to the influence of the environment than shielded systems (e.g., coaxial).
Good results were obtained for simple yeast suspensions. However, the presence of other cells and dispersed solids (e.g., in pressed grape juice) was found to completely overshadow the yeast cells. Electrochemical effects on the electrodes were found to be insignificant above around 200 kHz. Bubbles on electrodes, delamination, high concentrations of ions, and even temperature variations significantly hindered measurements in many cases.

AB - Magnesium aluminate has the spinel structure along with good mechanical, chemical, and thermal properties. Magnesium aluminate has a wide range of applications including refractory ceramics, optically transparent ceramic windows, and armors. Its low dielectric permeability and low loss tangent enable its applications for integrated electronic devices, as well. In this paper, MgO and Al2O3 powders were mixed in a one-to-one molar ratio and calcined at temperatures ranging from 1500 to 1800°C to produce phase pure spinel. Thereafter, pellets were crushed and treated in a planetary ball mill for 60 min to obtain a fine powder. All powders were examined for phase composition, crystal structure, and morphology. The obtained results showed that by increasing the temperature, samples with higher density were synthesized. Milling for 1 h led to formation of larger particles, but finer powders after milling. XRPD and Raman spectroscopy showed disorder in the crystal structure after milling.

abstract = "Magnesium aluminate has the spinel structure along with good mechanical, chemical, and thermal properties. XRPD and Raman spectroscopy showed disorder in the crystal structure after milling.,

AB - Perovskite ceramic material based on MgTiO3 is used in various types of electronic devices owing to its dielectric properties, high dielectric constant, and low losses. These features can be tailored by setting preparation conditions. Densification of magnesium titanate by Spark Plasma Sintering (SPS) was the aim of this work. First, the mechanical activation in the highenergy ball mill was applied on the powder of MgO-TiO2 mixed in mole ratio 1:1. Prepared powder mixtures, activated for different times, were SPS sintered, at 1200 oC with a heating rate of 100oC/min. After reaching the desired temperature, a uniaxial pressure of 50 MPa was applied, and dwelled at this condition for 5 min, followed by cooling to room temperature at 5oC/min. The starting powders, activated mixtures, and sintered ceramics bodies were investigated by X-ray diffraction, scanning electron microscopy (SEM), and energy dispersive spectroscopy (EDS). The presence of the MgTi2O5 phase was noticed for the nonmilled ceramics. In the samples obtained from milled powders, MgTi2O5 was detected in EDS spectra in a lower amount, below the threshold of the XRD method. Dielectric measurements were performed at a wide range of frequencies and temperatures. The highest value of the hardness was obtained from powder milled for 15 min before SPS.

AB - A novel high-precision model of a custom-made coaxial chamber used for broadband measurement of the relative complex permittivity at microwave frequencies is presented. The model is based on a surface integral-equation formulation of the method of moments tailored for bodies of revolution. All singular integrals encountered in the numerical analysis are calculated in a unified way with a novel integral transformation, which enables the precision of up to 12 significant digits using the 64-bit representation of real numbers. The dielectric parameters are estimated from the reflection-coefficient measurement of the chamber with a disk-shaped dielectric sample by comparison of the measured data with the high-precision numerical analysis of the chamber. The complete measurement procedure is illustrated and verified using samples of known dielectric properties.

AB - Our research group has developed a method for measurement of complex relative permittivity of various dielectric materials in the frequency range from around 1 kHz up to several GHz. Material samples have preferably a disk shape. The thicknesses of the samples can be in a wide range, from about 10 μm (thick films) up to several mm. We have designed and manufactured a set of coaxial chambers, which we use as test fixtures. We have also developed two numerical-simulation programs for the electromagnetic analysis of bodies with rotational symmetry. One program is suitable for the low-frequency analysis. It is based on an electrostatic approach. The other program is based on an electrodynamic approach and it is tailored for microwave frequencies. In measurements, we use impedance meters and network analyzers to obtain the input impedance of a chamber with a sample. Thereafter, we implement our software for the electromagnetic modeling to extract the relative permittivity of the measured sample. As examples of verification of our method, we present here results for the relative permittivities of two sets of samples whose sizes are on the extreme limits of the method. The first set comprises poly (vinylidene fluoride) and mechanically activated ZnO nanoparticle composite films, whose relative permittivities are around 1.8. The second set comprises large, high-density samples of spinel (aluminum magnesium oxide) ceramics, sintered under various conditions. The measured relative permittivities of these samples are around 7.5. In all cases, good agreement with other available data has been obtained.

AB - Solid-state reaction between BaTiO3 and Fe2O3 was used to produce a multiferroic heterostructure composite. Commercial BaTiO3 and Fe(NO3)3•9H2O were suspended in ethanol for 30 minutes in an ultrasound bath. The prepared mixture was thermally processed at 300 oC for 6 h. Sintering at 1300 oC for 1 h resulted in a mixture of different phases, BaTiO3, BaFe12O19 and Ba12Ti28Fe15O84, which were confirmed by x-ray powder diffraction. A dense microstructure with a small volume fraction of closed porosity was indicated by the scanning electron microscopy, while a homogeneous distribution of Fe ions over BaTiO3 phase was visible from energy dispersive spectroscopy mapping. Doping of BaTiO3 with Fe2O3 resulted in formation of magnetic hexaferrite phases, as confirmed by dielectric measurements that showed a broadened maximum of the permittivity measured as a function of temperature.

abstract = "Solid-state reaction between BaTiO3 and Fe2O3 was used to produce a multiferroic heterostructure composite. Doping of BaTiO3 with Fe2O3 resulted in formation of magnetic hexaferrite phases, as confirmed by dielectric measurements that showed a broadened maximum of the permittivity measured as a function of temperature.",

AB - ZnO powder was mechanically activated for 10 and 30 minutes in a high energy planetary ball mill, and mixed with 2 wt% PVDF solution to obtain nanocomposite films (50 μm) by casting. ZnO powder activated for 10 and 30 minutes was used as filler. The difference in the dielectric properties for composites with the powder with prolonged time of mechanical activation was investigated, as well as the influence of ageing using dielectric measurements at higher frequencies. Dielectric measurement showed that the ageing process does not significantly affect the properties of the composites, while the prolonged activation times can be correlated with the changes in the values of the dielectric constant. The introduction of mechanically activated ZnO powders into the matrix leads to an increase in the dielectric permittivity of the polymer. Values of dielectric permittivity for different frequencies at 300 K decrease from approximately 3.1 (60 Hz) to 1.8 (30 MHz) for nanocomposite with ZnO activated for 10 minutes, while the permittivity for nanocopomosite with ZnO activated for 30 minutes permittivity was 2.6.

AB - We have developed rotationally symmetrical coaxial chambers for measurements of dielectric parameters of disk-shaped samples, in the frequency range from 1 MHz to several hundred MHz. The reflection coefficient of the chamber is measured and the dielectric parameters are hence extracted utilizing a high-accuracy quasistatic numerical model of the chamber and the sample. We present this model, which is based on the method-of-moments solution of a set of integral equations for composite metallic and dielectric bodies. The equations are tailored to bodies of revolution. The model is efficient and accurate so that the major contribution of the measurement uncertainty comes from the measurement hardware.

AB - The increase in the utilization of ceramic/polymer composites as components for electric devices is mainly based on their high chemical stability, mechanical strength, and flexibility. The polymers usually have poor dielectric performances. In order to increase the dielectric permittivity, ceramic fillers with high dielectric constant have been used as active fillers, and usually in large amounts, which have a detrimental effect on the mechanical properties of the composite. With the aim to enhance the dielectric properties of the composite without loss of polymer’s flexibility, 5 wt.% of BaTiO3/Fe2O3 core/shell powders, prepared by different synthesis conditions, was added into the PVDF matrix. The effect of the phase composition and morphology of the starting BaTiO3/Fe2O3 core/shell filler on the crystal structure and lattice dynamics was investigated. Based on the results of the thermal analysis, TG/DSC, various parameters of ceramic/polymer composites were determined. We were able to corroborate that differences in the phase composition and morphology of BaTiO3/Fe2O3 core/shell filler have an influence on the formation of various PVDF allomorph modifications, as well as the level of crystallinity. The dielectric performances of the pure PVDF and polymer/ceramic composites were measured. An enhancement in the dielectric permittivity and decrease in the loss tangent were revealed.

AB - Solid-state mechanical activation of MgO and α-Al2O3 powders was used to produce MgAl2O4. The cation site occupancy in the resulting MgAl2O4 spinel was investigated using different methods. Differential thermal analysis and thermal gravimetry showed that mechanical activation reduced the spinel formation temperature by around 200 °C, and the corresponding activation energy by about 25%. In addition, characteristic temperatures for evaporation of physisorbed water and decomposition of Mg(OH)2 shifted to lower values, and peaks were more pronounced. Raman spectra were used to characterize the degree of inversion as a function of the sintering temperature for all of the sintered specimens, indicating that the breaking point for ordering of the crystal structure was around 1500 °C for non-activated samples, and 1400 °C for activated samples.

AB - Sintering of pure cordierite 2MgO:2Al2O3:5SiO2, and cordierite with the addition of 5 mass % TeO2 was studied. Green bodies were prepared from powder mixtures mechanically activated in a high-energy planetary mill, shaped by uniaxial (20 MPa) and cold isostatic pressing (1000 MPa). The pressure-less sintering of these specimens was performed at 1350°C for 1 h. High relative density over 95% of the theoretical value was obtained through solid-state reaction and pressure-less sintering of powder activated for 40 min, and for the first time reported in the literature. Phase composition and microstructures of sintered samples were determined by XRD and SEM, coupled with EDS mapping. The real part of the complex relative permittivity of the samples was measured at 200 MHz. The loss tangent of all samples was below the resolution of the measurement setup. A strong correlation between the relative permittivity and the density agrees with previously published data.

AB - Mechanical activation is commonly used as a pre-sintering process in order to enhance the reactivity of materials, reduce the particle size, increase diffusion rates, accelerate the reaction, and lower the sintering temperature. The mechanical activation can affect the final electrical and mechanical characteristics. In this paper we consider the influence of the mechanical activation on the permittivity and the loss tangent. We outline methods for evaluation of these parameters, with emphasis on our coaxial-chamber technique for measurements in the VHF band.

AB - Steatite, as ceramic with composition predominantly resting on magnesium silicate, was produced from economic resources – talc, aluminosilicate clays, and either BaCO3 or feldspar as flux. Titanium dioxide was a doping agent. Four steatite mixtures were mechanically activated in a planetary ball mill for 30, 45 or 60 min, prior to the thermal treatment. Two-step sintering with initial phase set at 1350 °C and holding period conducted at 1250 °C was applied to initiate diffusion and prevent grain growth. Thereby, a high density ceramic material with low-porous submicron structure was acquired. The effects of TiO2 addition on densification, microstructure, and dielectric characteristics of steatites were monitored. The thermal stability of green mixtures was tested by differential thermal and thermogravimetric analyses. Changes in crystallinity and mineral phase composition were observed by the X-ray diffraction technique. Microstructural visualization with spatial arrangements of individual chemical elements on surface of the sintered ceramics was acquired by scanning electron microscopy accompanied with EDS mapping. In order to test the possibility of employment of the obtained steatites in insulation materials, electrical measurements were conducted by recording variations of the dielectric constant and loss tangent as a function of alternations in the mix-design and the mechanical activation period.

AB - Alumina-based compounds have many technological applications and attract great attention even after decades of investigation, due to their good chemical, electrical, and mechanical properties. A mixture of several alumina modifications (α-, κ-, γ-Al2O3) doped with 1 wt% of Mn2O3 was used for this experiment. The powder was mechanically activated for 60 min in an ethanol medium. After compaction, green bodies were sintered in the temperature range from 1200 to 1400 °C. Microstructures of the obtained specimens were investigated by scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and Energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDS). The influence of morphological changes on electrical and mechanical properties was examined in detail. We have developed a test fixture and corresponding software for measurement of the relative dielectric permittivity and the loss tangent of ceramic specimens. This new method overcomes the problems of dimensions and shape of samples, as well as the problem of applying silver paste. The accuracy is around 2% for ε'r and 0.003 for tanδ. We demonstrate that the mechanical activation (MA) has the dominant influence on lowering the characteristic temperatures and microstructure development, which further leads to increased permittivity and tensile strength.

AB - Corundum (alpha-alumina) is one of the most exploited materials in ceramic industry due to its good physico-chemical properties, mechanical properties, and, importantly, due to its low cost. Advantageous properties, such as hardness, dielectric and thermal properties, and refractoriness, open the door to a wide range of applications of corundum. Porous alumina ceramics is often used for filters and as a catalytic substrate, whereas dense alumina ceramics is frequently used in automotive and aerospace industry. Hence, there is a great interest in exploring this type of ceramics. The aim of this work is to explain the influence of preparation parameters (mechanical activation, addition of transition metal oxides, and sintering conditions) on the final electrical and mechanical properties of alumina.
As a starting powder, a mix of a few alumina modifications (α-, κ-,γ - Al2O3) was used. It was doped with 1 wt % of Mn2O3, Cr2O3, and NiO, respectively. Three of the obtained mixtures were homogenized and three were ball milled for 60 min. Particle size analysis, SEM, and EDS were performed in order to demonstrate changes in the microstructure after milling. DTA/TG analyses were used to determine all characteristic temperatures. After sintering at 1400 oC in an air atmosphere, mechanical, electrical, and physico-chemical properties of the obtained ceramics were determined.
Results showed that the mechanical treatment lead to a decrease in temperatures of phase transitions and sintering for approximately 100 oC. Incorporation of cations of transition metals into the crystal lattice of alumina was noticed. Activated and sintered samples showed a higher tensile strength and higher relative dielectric permittivity then the sample doped with Cr2O3.
The main conclusion of this investigation is that the mechanical activation has the dominant influence on lowering the characteristic temperatures of all detected phase transitions and sintering processes. Using a mixture of several crystalline phases of alumina as a starting powder alleviates the incorporation of transition-metal cations into the alumina crystal lattice, leading to changes in microstructures of the prepared ceramics. Finally, changes in the microstructure and lattice disordering have the dominant influence on the final mechanical properties.

AB - Magnesium aluminate, MgAl2O4 and other alumina-based spinels are ceramics with high hardness, high melting point and mechanical strenght. Spinels can also be used as dielectrics in microwave applications. The goal of this study was to examine the effects of mechanical activation and sintering temperatures on physico-chemical properties of spinel. MgAl2O4 was produced by solid state reaction between MgO and α-Al2O3. The starting powders were mixed by ball milling to homogenize without significant particle size reduction. Mechanical activation of mixed powders was performed in a high-energy planetary ball mill in air for 1 h. Powders were compacted at 300 MPa. Heat treatments were performed in air, at temperatures ranging from 1200 to 1600 °C with 2 h dwell time, to determine the amount of spinel formation as a function of temperature. Phase composition and microstructure of initial powders and heated samples were determined by means of X-ray diffraction, particle size analysis, and scanning electron microscopy. The influences of milling and consolidation parameters were studied by electrical measurements and mechanical characterization. The main conclusion of this study was that mechanical activation for 60 min initiated a mechano-chemical reaction, resulted in spinel formation at much lower temperatures than within non-activated powders, and indicated that final sintering stage started at much lower temperatures for activated powders. Changes in microstructure parameters, as a consequence of mechanical treatment and subsequent heating of investigated powder mixtures, strongly affect electrical and mechanical properties of the final ceramics.

AB - Magnesium aluminate and other alumina-based spinels are refractory ceramics with excellent properties, such as high hardness, high mechanical strength, and low dielectric constant, applicable in many modern industries. MgAl2O4 was produced by solid state reaction between MgO and alpha-Al2O3 powders. Mechanical activation represents a very efficient method for increasing the reactivity of powders, accelerating chemical reactions and decreasing the sintering temperatures. Mechanical activation of mixed powders was performed in a high-energy planetary ball mill in air for 60 minutes. Sintering was performed in air at temperatures ranging from 1200°C to 1600 °C with a 2 h dwell time. Initial powders and sintered samples were characterized using X-ray diffraction and scanning electron microscopy. Differential thermal analysis (DTA) and thermal gravimetry (TG) were used to determine the temperatures for synthesis reactions and phase transformations. Based on the DTA results, several different processes occured during heating, including evaporation of physisorbed water, decomposition of Mg(OH)2, and spinel formation. With mechanical activation, all characteristic temperatures shifted to lower values, and peaks were more pronounced. Raman spectra were used to characterize the degree of inversion as a function of sintering temperature for all of the sintered specimens.
