AB - Novel hybrid core shell structure with extensive absorption was synthesized by a two-step wet chemical route. Up-converting β-NaYF4:Yb,Tm core was obtained through EDTA assisted hydrothermal process, while the shell of anatase TiO2-Acetylacetonate charge transfer complex (TiO2-Acac) was formed over these via sol-gel method. Tetracycline was used to investigate photocatalytic efficiency of obtained structure under irradiation of reduced power Vis and NIR spectra. Owing to the fact that 1D2→3F4 and 1G4→3H6 emission of Tm3+ matches well with the absorption edge of TiO2-Acac, radiation-reabsorption and FRET processes improve the overall generation of reactive oxygen species and degradation of tetracycline. Beside it, formation of tetracycline intermediates immediately after the addition of this novel hybrid core-shell structures, making them a promising material for water purification through the synergy of catalytic and photocatalytic processes.

AB - Magnesium aluminate has the spinel structure along with good mechanical, chemical, and thermal properties. Magnesium aluminate has a wide range of applications including refractory ceramics, optically transparent ceramic windows, and armors. Its low dielectric permeability and low loss tangent enable its applications for integrated electronic devices, as well. In this paper, MgO and Al2O3 powders were mixed in a one-to-one molar ratio and calcined at temperatures ranging from 1500 to 1800°C to produce phase pure spinel. Thereafter, pellets were crushed and treated in a planetary ball mill for 60 min to obtain a fine powder. All powders were examined for phase composition, crystal structure, and morphology. The obtained results showed that by increasing the temperature, samples with higher density were synthesized. Milling for 1 h led to formation of larger particles, but finer powders after milling. XRPD and Raman spectroscopy showed disorder in the crystal structure after milling.

AB - Micro- and nano-sized core-shell particles for efficient photocatalysis were successfully synthesized by a two step wet-chemical route. The core composed of up-converting (UC) NaYF4:Yb,Tm phase was prepared through EDTA assisted hydrothermal process, while the shell of anatase TiO2 –Acetylacetone (TiO2-Acac) charge-transfer complex was formed via a sol-gel method. During coating, the effect of polyvinylpyrrolidone (PVP) addition on the core and shell coupling was investigated. Two forms of core structures were obtained: hexagonal microprisms of beta-NaYF4:Yb,Tm and alpha-NaYF4:Yb,Tm nanospheres, both coated with TiO2-Acac nanocrystals.

AB - Magnesium aluminate and other alumina-based spinels attract attention due to their high hardness, high mechanical strength, and low dielectric constant. MgAl2O4 was produced by a solid-state reaction between MgO and α-Al2O3 powders. Mechanical activation for 30 min in a planetary ball mill was used to increase the reactivity of powders. Yttrium oxide and graphene were added to prevent abnormal grain growth during sintering. Samples were sintered by hot pressing under vacuum at 1450 °C. Phase composition and microstructure of sintered specimens were characterized by X-ray powder diffraction and scanning electron microscopy. Rietveld analysis revealed 100% pure spinel phase in all sintered specimens, and a decrease in crystallite size with the addition of yttria or graphene. Density measurements indicated that the mechanically activated specimen reached 99.6% relative density. Furthermore, the highest solar absorbance and highest spectral selectivity as a function of temperature were detected for the mechanically activated specimen with graphene addition. Mechanical activation is an efficient method to improve densification of MgAl2O4 prepared from mixed oxide powders, while additives improve microstructure and optical properties.

AB - Up-converting NaYF4:Yb,Er nanoparticles were obtained by polymer-assisted solvothermal synthesis using a common solution of hydrated RE nitrates in ethanol or ethylene glycol. It was shown that polymer choice (polyacrylic acid—PAA, polyvinylpyrrolidone—PVP and chitosan—CS) controls the size and shape of NaYF4:Yb,Er nanoparticles, while the solvent type and pH value affect their crystallinity. Consequently, the spherical nanoparticles of a cubic (α) phase, the average size of which ranged from 60 to 140 nm, were obtained either when PVP/ethanol or PVP/ethylene glycol were used solely during synthesis, whereas NaOH addition induced hexagonal (β) phase nucleation. The formation of the hierarchically organized spherical aggregates and nanofoils was observed when CS and PAA were used during synthesis, respectively. The average crystallite size, microstrain, doping level, lattice parameters, as well as, the presence of the certain ligands on the particle surface were determined and correlated with the intensity of visible-light emission observed under 980 nm laser-diode excitation.

AB - Magnesium aluminate has spinel structure and very good mechanical, chemical, and thermal properties. Owing to these properties, it has a wide range of applications including refractory ceramics, optically transparent ceramic windows and armors. Its low dielectric permeability and low loss tangent enable its using for integrated electronic devices, as well. Furthermore, as a porous ceramic, magnesium aluminate has important application as humidity sensor, catalyst and filter for waste water purification. In this paper, synthesis and characterization of MgAl2O4 was performed. Stochiometric ratio of MgO and Al2O3powders was mixed and calcined within the temperatures range 1500-1800 oC to produce pure spinel phase. Thereafter pellets were crushed and treated in planetary ball mill for 60 minutes to obtained fine grain. All powders, calcined and milled, were examined for phase composition, crystal structure, and morphology. The obtained results showed that by increasing the temperature denser samples but more fragile have been synthesized. Milling for 1 hour leads to crumble of bigger particles and getting finer, single phase powders. XRPD and Raman spectroscopy showed disorder in crystal structure after milling.

AB - The emerging up-conversion nanoparticles (UCNPs) offer a wide range of biotechnology applications, from biomarkers and deep tissue imaging, to single molecule tracking and drug delivery. Their successful conjugation to biocompatible agents is crucial for specific molecules recognition and usually requires multiple steps which may lead to low reproducibility. Here, we report a simple and rapid one-step procedure for in situ synthesis of biocompatible amino-functionalized NaYF4:Yb,Er UCNPs that could be used for NIR-driven fluorescence cell labeling. X-ray diffraction showed that UCNPs synthesized through chitosan-assisted solvothermal processing are monophasic and crystallize in a cubic α phase. Scanning and transmission electron microscopy revealed that the obtained crystals are spherical in shape with a mean diameter of 120 nm. Photoluminescence spectra indicated weaker green (2H11/2, 4S3/2 → 4I15/2) and stronger red emission (4F9/2 → 4I15/2), as a result of enhanced non-radiative 4I11/2 → 4I13/2 Er3+ relaxation. The presence of chitosan groups at the surface of UCNPs was confirmed by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, thermogravimetry and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. This provides their enhanced internalization in cells, at low concentration of 10 μg ml-1, without suppression of cell viability after 24 h of exposure. Furthermore, upon 980 nm laser irradiation, the amino-functionalized NaYF4:Yb,Er UCNPs were successfully used in vitro for labeling of two human cell types, normal gingival and oral squamous cell carcinoma. © 2018 The Royal Society of Chemistry.

AB - The efficiency of photo-oxidation of pollutants catalysed by semiconductors is still limited for real-world applications due to several drawbacks, such as a) insufficient absorption of visible radiation, which predominates in solar spectrum, b) rapid free electron to hole recombination, c) small surface area, built from equilibrium crystallographic facets with low adsorption capacities and d) photo-corrosion. The present study disclosures new mesoporous heterostructures, built from exfoliated lepidocrocite-like ferrititanates and TiO2 (anatase)-acetylacetone charge transfer complex, capable of reducing free electron-to-hole recombination rate through a robust charge separation and sensitive to the visible light spectrum. The synthesis route is based on soft-chemistry and low temperature calcination at 300 °C. Two different partially pillarized heterostructures, denoted as HM-1 and HM-2, have been synthesized. It was observed that the heterostructure HM-1 was four times more active toward photocatalytic degradation of NO gas in comparison to the benchmark photocatalytic material P25. The lower activity of the heterostructure HM-2, comparable to that of P-25, was attributed to the high value of Urbach energy that indicates high number of defect sites within energy band-gap of the constituent semiconductor components. [Ti] anatase/[Ti] ferrititanate mol ratio might also play a role in photocatalytic efficiency. © 2018 Elsevier B.V.

abstract = "The efficiency of photo-oxidation of pollutants catalysed by semiconductors is still limited for real-world applications due to several drawbacks, such as a) insufficient absorption of visible radiation, which predominates in solar spectrum, b) rapid free electron to hole recombination, c) small surface area, built from equilibrium crystallographic facets with low adsorption capacities and d) photo-corrosion. © 2018 Elsevier B.V.",

AB - In this feature article, we highlight our works on compositional and structural dependence of up-converting rare earth (RE) fluorides obtained through ethylenediamine tetraacetic acid (EDTA) assisted hydrothermal synthesis. Various nanostructures were obtained by tuning of experimental conditions, such as precursor’s concentration, degree of doping, reaction time and solvent used during synthesis. We correlated in detail the structural, morphological and optical properties of YF3 and NaYF4 compounds co-doped with Yb3+ and Er3+ (introduced in total mol% of 8 and 20). For this purpose, X-ray powder diffraction, scanning and transmission electron microscopy, energy dispersive X-ray and Furrier transform infrared spectroscopy, as well as, the photoluminescence spectra and decay times were recorded and analyzed. The particle size and phase content were found to be dependent on the nucleation rate, which, in turn, was governed by the precursor concentration, degree of doping and solvent type. The transformation from cubic to hexagonal NaYF4:Yb3+/Er3+ phase was found to be sensitive to the reaction time and precursors concentration, while the crystallization of orthorhombic YF3:Yb3+/Er3+ phase is achieved through lowering of dopants concentration or by changing of solvent during hydrothermal treatment. The up-conversion photoluminescence demonstrated morphology and crystal phase dependence and is found to be superior in microcrystalline samples, independent on their phase composition.

AB - Over the last decade, solvothermal decomposition of organometallic compounds has been indicated as one of the most convenient method for the synthesis of monodisperse lanthanide doped upconverting fluorides. Due to their hydrophobic nature such particles could not be used for a conjugation of the molecular targeting agents which is necessary for optical imaging of biological tissues. In this work, hydrophilic NaYF4:Yb,Er (17 mol% Yb; 3mol% Er) nanoparticles were synthesized by facile one-pot hydrothermal synthesis performed with a help of chitosan (CS) and poly(acrylic acid) (PAA). Obtained powders were analyzed by X-ray powder diffraction (XRPD), field emission scanning electron microscopy (FESEM), Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) and photoluminescence (PL) spectroscopy. The obtained results implied that particle size, shape and surface characteristics are dependent on the polymer choice. Although both powders crystallize in the same crystal arrangement (cubic, Fm-3m) more intense red emission, assigned to the Er3+ 4F9/2 → 4I15/2 electronic transitions, characterize spherical NaYF4:Yb,Er@CS particles. To asses a biological safety of their use, viability of the human gingival fibroblasts (HFG) was additionally tested by a colorimetric MTT assay.

AB - In this work, the processing of α-Al2O3 ceramics is studied in order to attain the microstructure and mechanical and thermal properties suitable for its application as a special refractory material in sintering furnaces. Samples of a commercial powder with addition of 3% polyvinyl alcohol, a binder additive, was compacted by uniaxial cold pressing and sintered in air at 1500 oC. The effects of powder preparation conditions and the consolidation process on density, thermal expansion and conductivity, hardness, flexural strength and microstructure were analyzed. Ceramics with densities of approximately 90% were obtained, with an average hardness of 14.9 ± 0.6 GPa, characteristic strength of 238 MPa and Weibull modulus of 8. The microstructure had grain sizes between 1 and 2 μm. Processing and powder consolidation and sintering parameters resulted in alumina ceramic with suitable properties for its intended purpose.

A better dispersion of silanized TTNT in PA11 caused increase of crystallinity and decrease of the long period of PA11 lamellar structure. The increase of glass transition (∼33%) and decomposition temperature (∼3%), as well as, the improvement of Young's, storage and loss modulus (of 17, 27 and 17% respectively) was achieved in the composites loaded with the highest content (2 wt%) of nanofiller silanized by 3-aminopropyltriethoxysilane (APTES), owning to a chemical interaction established at the silanized TTNT-PA11 interface. Contrary to it, lack of compatibility at the pristine TTNT-PA11 interface led to drop (up to 20%) in the strength at break in these composites.

AB - The preparation of polyamide 11 (PA11) based composites reinforced with pristine and surface-modified titanate nanotubes (TTNT) is reported. Twin-screw melt compounding was used to produce composites with up to 2. wt% of TTNT. To enhance dispersion and TTNT compatibility with the thermoplastic, these were modified with cetyltrimethylammonium bromide (CTAB) and sodium dodecyl sulphate (SDS). Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy and thermogravimetry were used to demonstrate that surface modification prior to composite processing was successful, while scanning transmission electron microscopy combined with energy-dispersive X-ray analysis confirmed the retention of surfactants on TTNT in composites. Nevertheless, scanning and transmission electron microscopy revealed incomplete dispersion of TTNT inside polyamide. The improved wettability on the TTNT-PA11 interface was observed for composites comprising surface-modified TTNT. Consequently, these composites exhibited better thermal and mechanical properties than those containing pristine TTNT. A significant rise of the decomposition temperature was detected in composites containing TTNT modified with CTAB, while the uppermost increment of the storage and Young's modulus (of about 35% and 26%, respectively) was achieved in the composite comprising 0.5. wt% of TTNT modified with SDS. The increase of the nanofiller content improved the yield strength and led to the drop in the strain at break. © 2015 Elsevier Ltd.

AB - Efficient methods for the synthesis of layered structure nanomaterials (nanosheets), their complete exfoliation (delamination) into the layers of atomic thickness and design of organic-inorganic nanohybrids present important stages toward development of improved polymer-based nanocomposites and pillared heterostructures with potential application in purification technologies such as photocatalysis. A rapid and efficient exfoliation process of protonated layered ferrititanates with lepidocrocite-like structure and formation of organic-inorganic nanohybrids is performed starting from the nanosheets composed of only a few host layers and nanometric lateral dimensions using quaternary ammonium compounds. These nanosheets are initially synthesized from a highly abundant precursor through an alkaline hydrothermal route. We demonstrated that dimethyldioctadecylammonium cations strongly interact with the exfoliated single host layers (0.75. nm thick) providing thermal stability (~ 500 °C) to the as-prepared organic-inorganic nanohybrid over the temperature range commonly applied for the processing of thermoplastic nanocomposites. © 2015 Elsevier Ltd.

AB - Recently, polymer composites reinforced with low fractions of thermomiotic nanoceramics have triggered a lot of research. The efforts have been focused on achieving considerable reduction of the coefficient of thermal expansion (CTE) of polymeric materials without deterioration of other physical properties. In this context, polyethylene (PE) composites reinforced with different loads of Al2Mo3O12 nanofillers (0.5–4 mass %) were fabricated by micro-compounding. To enhance the interfacial interaction between the two components, chemical functionalization of Al2Mo3O12 was performed with vinyltrimethoxysilane (VTMS) prior to micro-compounding. Infrared spectroscopy and thermogravimetry demonstrated the successful grafting of VTMS on the Al2Mo3O12 surface. The composites showed strongly decreased CTEs, up to 46 % reduction for loadings of 4 mass % compared with neat PE, suggesting intimate filler–matrix interactions. The variation of CTEs of the composites in terms of the filler fraction was successfully described by Turner’s model allowing calculation of the bulk modulus of monoclinic Al2Mo3O12 (13.6 ± 2.6 GPa), in agreement with the value obtained by an ultrasonic method. The thermal stability of the composites was improved, although the addition of functionalized fillers decreased the degree of crystallinity of the PE to a small extent. The Young’s modulus and yield strength of the composites increased from 6.6 to 19.1 % and 4.0–6.0 %, respectively, supporting the existence of strong filler–matrix interactions, contributing to an efficient load transfer. Finite element analysis of thermal stresses indicated absence of plastic deformation of the matrix or fracture of the nanofillers, for a 100 K temperature drop.

AB - Rod-like and flake-like up-converting Y2O3:Yb3+/Ho3+ particles which are composed of nanoparticles with size less than 100 nm, are prepared by a simple hydrothermal processing at 473 K (3 h) followed by additional thermal treatment at 1373 K (3 and 12 h). The effect of precursor pH value on the formation of Y2O3:Yb3+/Ho3+ is followed through X-ray powder diffractometry (XRPD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and energy dispersive spectroscopy (EDS). Structural refinement confirms formation of the cubic bixbyte structure (S.G. Ia-3) with the non-uniform accommodation of dopants at C2 and S6 cationic sites. Under 978 nm laser excitation, strong green (530–570 nm) up-conversion is observed in all samples. The emission shows a decrease in intensity with an increase in external temperature, indicating FIR (fluorescence intensity ratio) based temperature sensing behavior of 0.52% for the 5F4 → 5I8/5S2 → 5I8 transitions.

AB - One of the major challenges in the development of nanocomposites based on a polymer matrix and highly polar ceramic nanofillers is the lack of the compatibility between these two components. In order to improve the chemical interaction between titanate nanotubes (TTNT) and polymer matrix, such as nylon 11,3-aminopropyltriethoxysilane (APTES) was grafted onto TTNT. The effects of the TTNT chemical composition i.e. sodium content and solvent type on the grafting silane efficiency were thoroughly studied through CHN elemental analysis, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), surface area and zeta potential measurements. The present study brings evidences supporting aqueous ethanol as more efficient reaction medium for TTNT functionalization with APTES, independent of the sodium content of nanotubes, when compared with pure water. It is also worth noting that within aqueous ethanol medium, TTNT with low sodium content are more efficiently grafted than TTNT with high sodium content. Successful APTES grafting decreases concentration of the hydroxyl groups on TTNT surfaces and enables its future application for the fabrication of nylon 11 nanocomposites.
