SASA Dictionary as the Gold Standard for Good Dictionary Examples for Serbian

AB  - In this paper we present a model for selection of good dictionary examples for Serbian and the
development of initial model components. The method used is based on a thorough analysis of
various lexical and syntactic features in a corpus compiled of examples from the five digitized
volumes of the Serbian Academy of Sciences and Arts (SASA) dictionary. The initial set of
features was inspired by a similar approach for other languages. The feature distribution of
examples from this corpus is compared with the feature distribution of sentence samples
extracted from corpora comprising various texts. The analysis showed that there is a group of
features which are strong indicators that a sentence should not be used as an example. The
remaining features, including detection of non-standard and other marked lexis from the SASA
dictionary, are used for ranking. The selected candidate examples, represented as featurevectors,
are used with the GDEX ranking tool for Serbian candidate examples and a supervised
machine learning model for classification on standard and non-standard Serbian sentences, for
further integration into a solution for present and future dictionary production projects.

The Dictionary of the Serbian Academy: from the Text to the Lexical Database

AB  - In this paper we discuss the project of digitization of the Dictionary of the Serbo-Croatian Standard and Vernacular
Language. Scanning and character recognition were a particular challenge, since various non-standard
character set encoding was used in the course of the almost 60-year long production of the dictionary. The first
aim of the project was to formalize the micro-structure of the dictionary articles in order to parse the digitized
text of and transform it into structured data stored in relational lexical database. This approach is compatible
with several standard structured forms and ontologies (TEI, LMF, Ontolex, LexInfo). A lexical database model
was designed in compliance with these structured forms, following mostly the lemon model. Mapping of
the lexical entry markers to LexInfo and TEI enabled export of the lexical data to the mentioned formats. A
software solution for the dictionary text analysis, parsing and lexical database population was developed and
tested on the first and the last published volumes of the dictionary (which contain 27,141 articles in total). An
evaluation of the results shows that the developed model and software solution can be successfully used for
the other volumes as well.

AB  - Циљ овога рада јесте да покаже како богата и разноврсна лексичка грађа Речника САНУ може послужити за израду разноврсних терминолошких речника (овде на примеру речника кулинарства) и како се процесом дигитализације Речник може обогатити, осавременити и како се рад на њему може убрзати.
AB  - This paper discusses the possibility of creating culinary vocabulary based on the culinary lexis
contained in the SASA Dictionary of Serbo-Croatian Literary and National Language, which is
built as a thesaurus.
To obtain the relevant data, it was necessary to find a method of extracting this lexicon, given
that unlike most other areas of terminology, it is not systematically labelled with appropriate
qualifiers.
As a starting point, we used a digitized version of Chef Katarina Popovic Mid.ine fs Big Serbian Cookbook (processed using the Unitex tool and morphological dictionaries for the Serbian language in DELA format). After this we applied the Leximir tool to extract a list of the lemma frequencies in the cookbook, which were then filtered and classified by applying semantic markers. The obtained list was compared to the list of the lexical entries in the SASA dictionary; the extracted entries from the dictionary that have no information about the culinary domain should be amended, and words that do not exist in the dictionary should be entered.
In this research syntactic graphs are also used for the extraction of multiword lexical units which are allocated to the frequency of terms that are significantly more frequent in a culinary text than in the corpus of contemporary Serbian language.
Using this approach, we were able to identify an extremely rich collection of terms for the culinary lexicon contained in the SASA Dictionary and to show how during the digitization process traditional vocabulary becomes a base for terminology dictionaries that allows different uses. In addition, the process of the digitalization and modernization of work on the SASA Dictionary ensures its enrichment with new, modern lexica and new examples, and thus accelerates work on the SASA Dictionary.

AB  - У Упутству намењеном обрађивачима који раде на изради Речника српскохрватског књижевног и народног језика дате су детаљне и прецизне смернице које описују микроструктуру речничког чланка, укључујући и разрешење могућих недоумица. Упутство је намењено састављању штампане верзије Речника па се поједине смернице односе на графичко обликовање одреднице (употреба одређеног типа слова и сл.). У припреми дигиталног издања Речника, микроструктура речничког чланка мора се описати на начин који ће омогућити различита претраживања текста Речника (изван уобичајеног редоследа одређеног азбучним поретком одредница). У том светлу у раду се описује начин разлагања речничког чланка у дигиталном облику на поља обележена XML-етикетама, а сагласно међународним стандардима (LMF, TEI). Микроструктура чланка описана на овај начин не зависи више од могуће графичке презентације, а омогућава вишеслојну претрагу текста Речника.
