AB  - Solid-state reaction between BaTiO3 and Fe2O3 was used to produce a multiferroic heterostructure composite. Commercial BaTiO3 and Fe(NO3)3•9H2O were suspended in ethanol for 30 minutes in an ultrasound bath. The prepared mixture was thermally processed at 300 oC for 6 h. Sintering at 1300 oC for 1 h resulted in a mixture of different phases, BaTiO3, BaFe12O19 and Ba12Ti28Fe15O84, which were confirmed by x-ray powder diffraction. A dense microstructure with a small volume fraction of closed porosity was indicated by the scanning electron microscopy, while a homogeneous distribution of Fe ions over BaTiO3 phase was visible from energy dispersive spectroscopy mapping. Doping of BaTiO3 with Fe2O3 resulted in formation of magnetic hexaferrite phases, as confirmed by dielectric measurements that showed a broadened maximum of the permittivity measured as a function of temperature.

Structural And Functional Investigation Of Fe/Pb/Zr-co-doped Barium Titanate Ceramics: From Theory To The Experiment

AB  - Mixtures of high purity powders of 50 mass% Fe, 4 mass% Pb, 3 mass% Zr and 43 mass% BaTiO3 were activated in a rotary ball mill for durations ranging from 30 min to 300 min; samples were then sintered in the air atmosphere for 2 hours at 1200 °C. Crystal structure prediction has been performed using Bond ValenceCalculation (BVC) method.Moreover, theoretical stability of theperovskite structure for synthesized and calculated Fe/Pb/Zr-codoped barium titanatecompounds has been investigated using the Goldschmidttolerance factor (Gt) and global instability index (GII).It was observed that magnetization of the system decreased after the sintering, with the most dramatic drop of 90.11% belonging to the sample activated for 150 min. In comparison with initial powders, X-ray powder diffractiondata confirmed the presence of newphases of BaFe12O19 and Ba1.696Ti0.228O3 in sintered samples. Utilizing the field emission scanning electron microscopy (FESEM), it was found that with the increase of activation time the morphology of the samples progressed from irregural, spherical grains to mostly rod-like ones. Energy dispersive X-ray (EDX) analysis identified the presence of Pb and Zr occupying the same locations on the surface of sintered samples, whilst Fe was uniformly deployed regardless of the activation time.

AB  - U radu su ispitivani strukturna svojstva legure 49Fe49Co2V proizvedene PIM/MIM tehnologijom, tako što je polazni granulat pripremljen mešanjem FeCoV praha sa niskoviskoznim vezivom. Nakon brizganja sirovi uzorci su najpre tretirani rastvaračem a zatim i termički s istim ciljem odstranjivanja
veziva. MIM tehnologija je završena visokotemperaturskim sinterovanjem tokom 3,5 sata na temperaturama od 1370 °C do 1460 °C u atmosferi vodonika, kojim se obezbedjuju potrebne magnetne i mehaničke karakteristike. Strukturna svojstva veličine čestica Dmax, Feret X, Feret Y su ispitivana u zavisnosti od temperature sinterovanja.

Microstructural and optical properties of MgAl2O4 Spinel: Effect of Mechanical Activation, Yttrium and Graphene addition

AB  - Magnesium aluminate and other alumina-based spinels attract attention due to their high hardness, high mechanical strength, and low dielectric constant. MgAl2O4 was produced by solid-state reaction between MgO and α-Al2O3 powders. Mechanical activation of 30 minutes in a planetary ball mill was used to increase the reactivity of powders. Yttrium oxide and graphene were added to prevent abnormal grain growth during sintering. Samples were sintered by hot-pressing under vacuum at 1450 °C. Phase composition and microstructure of sintered specimens were characterized by X-ray diffraction analysis and scanning electron microscopy. Rietveld analysis revealed 100 % pure spinel phase in all sintered specimens, and decrease in crystallite size with the addition of yttria or graphene. Density measurements indicated that the mechanically activated specimen reached 99.6 % relative density, while other specimens were above 96.5 % relative density. Furthermore, the highest solar absorbance and highest spectral selectivity as a function of temperature were detected for the mechanically activated specimen with graphene addition. Mechanical activation is an efficient method to improve the densification behaviour of MgAl2O4 produced from mixed oxide powders, while additives improve microstructure and optical properties.

AB  - ZnO powder was mechanically activated for 10 and 30 minutes in a high energy planetary ball mill, and mixed with 2 wt% PVDF solution to obtain nanocomposite films (50 μm) by casting. ZnO powder activated for 10 and 30 minutes was used as filler. The difference in the dielectric properties for composites with the powder with prolonged time of mechanical activation was investigated, as well as the influence of ageing using dielectric measurements at higher frequencies. Dielectric measurement showed that the ageing process does not significantly affect the properties of the composites, while the prolonged activation times can be correlated with the changes in the values of the dielectric constant. The introduction of mechanically activated ZnO powders into the matrix leads to an increase in the dielectric permittivity of the polymer. Values of dielectric permittivity for different frequencies at 300 K decrease from approximately 3.1 (60 Hz) to 1.8 (30 MHz) for nanocomposite with ZnO activated for 10 minutes, while the permittivity for nanocopomosite with ZnO activated for 30 minutes permittivity was 2.6.

AB  - The increase in the utilization of ceramic/polymer composites as components for electric devices is mainly based on their high chemical stability, mechanical strength, and flexibility. The polymers usually have poor dielectric performances. In order to increase the dielectric permittivity, ceramic fillers with high dielectric constant have been used as active fillers, and usually in large amounts, which have a detrimental effect on the mechanical properties of the composite. With the aim to enhance the dielectric properties of the composite without loss of polymer’s flexibility, 5 wt.% of BaTiO3/Fe2O3 core/shell powders, prepared by different synthesis conditions, was added into the PVDF matrix. The effect of the phase composition and morphology of the starting BaTiO3/Fe2O3 core/shell filler on the crystal structure and lattice dynamics was investigated. Based on the results of the thermal analysis, TG/DSC, various parameters of ceramic/polymer composites were determined. We were able to corroborate that differences in the phase composition and morphology of BaTiO3/Fe2O3 core/shell filler have an influence on the formation of various PVDF allomorph modifications, as well as the level of crystallinity. The dielectric performances of the pure PVDF and polymer/ceramic composites were measured. An enhancement in the dielectric permittivity and decrease in the loss tangent were revealed.

Magnetic features of MnZn ferrite for electronic applications

AB  - MnZn ferrites are one of the most common soft magnetic materials for application in microelectronics as a material for microwave components (transformers, transducers, inductors, magnetic fluids, sensors,). MnZn ferrites attracted attention due to wide range of relative magnetic permeability values (from 103 to 104), high resistivity (consequently low magnetic losses) as well as high thermal stability (high saturation magnetic flux density at high temperatures (Bs > 0.4 T at 100 OC) and a relatively high Curie temperature of about 230 OC).Recently, a variety of technologies have been examined for MnZn ferrite production: powder/ceramic injection moulding (PIM/CIM), chemical co-precipitation method, conventional ceramic processing, sol-gel or microemulsion. In this study a toroidal samples of MnZn ferrites with dimensions appropriate for applications in electronic industry (i.e. microelectronics: inner diameter 3.5 mm, outer diameter 7 mm, height 2 mm) were investigated. Magnetic properties were measured by hysteresis graph (B-H curve at level of magnetic excitation up to 1 kA/m and at different frequencies from 5 Hz to 10 kHz). Relative magnetic permeability as well as magnetic power (active) losses was analyzed as frequency dependent. Very stable maximum magnetic permeability was observed for magnetic field of 200 A/m in the frequency range from 50 Hz (μr ≈ 480) to 10 kHz (μr ≈ 450). Active power referred to unit mass of about 30 W/kg was recorded at frequency of 1 kHz (@ 280 mT). As the hysteresis losses are proportionally to the frequency (~ f) and eddy-current losses are proportionally to the square of frequency (~ f2) it was performed separation between these two components from total magnetic power (active) losses. Numerical fitting of this functionality on frequency were performed and analysed. The results obtained were compared with the catalogue data for other MnZn ferrite components for applications in electronics.

AB  - Industrial/technological growth is directly connected with environmental pollution, but its influence can be minimized through pollution abatement approaches such as the treatment of industrial wastewater. In this study, novel porous amine-functionalized silicate minerals, specifically, cordierite was investigated for the removal of toxic heavy metals from industrial wastewaters. Cordierite supports were synthesized by mixing MgO, Al2O3 , and SiO2 powders in 2:2:5 molar ratios, and mechanically activated via ball milling in ethanol for 10, 40, or 80 min. Pellets were sintered by heating in air at 20°C min-1 to 1,350°C, for 2 h. Porous supports were produced by coarsely crushing the sintered pellets and mixing the crushed and sieved cordierite powder with 20 wt.% of a pore-forming agent, either nanocellulose or yeast. The resulting pellets were sintered by heating at 5°C min-1 to 700°C in air. The synthetic cordierite support was modified by treatment in poly-ethylenimine. Activated supports were then tested for the removal of Ni2+ and Cd2+ ions. The phase composition of the cordierite supports was analyzed by the X-ray diffraction, Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy, and scanning electron microscopy. Analysis of adsorption isotherms, kinetics, and thermodynamic parameters indicated that adsorption was a spontaneous, endothermic process with a maximum adsorption capacity of 36 mg g-1 for Cd2+ and 43 mg g-1 for Ni2+. This work has shed light on the mechanism of heavy metal removal from the aquatic medium using the novel hybrid functionalized cordierite-based ceramic.

AB  - NTC thick-film segmented thermistors were used as anemometer sensing devices. They were screen printed of thick-film thermistor paste based on modified NiMn2O4 fine powder, organic vehicle, and glass frit. Their electrical properties, such as resistance vs. temperature R(T) and thermistor exponential factor B were obtained using measurements in the climatic test chamber. A uniaxial anemometer was formed using a thick-film segmented thermistor, which was placed in the hole drilled in rectangular piece of thermally insulating material. The uniaxial anemometer was used for the optimization of operating point of segmented thermistors as self-heating/wind sensing devices. The dc supply voltage was correlated with the air temperature sub-ranges (RCV). The power save mode such as 30s self-heating/5 min pause was used to measure the thermistor response on stable wind blow. The three-axis' anemometer was formed using five sensor devices placed in five holes drilled in the cubical piece of thermally insulating material: three thermistor sensors measure wind speed on the x, y, z - axes, the fourth sensor Pt 1000 measures the air temperature T, while the fifth sensor (capacitive type) measures humidity H. The obtained sensitivity and inaccuracy were compared with respective ones of other anemometers.

abstract = "NTC thick-film segmented thermistors were used as anemometer sensing devices. They were screen printed of thick-film thermistor paste based on modified NiMn2O4 fine powder, organic vehicle, and glass frit. Their electrical properties, such as resistance vs. temperature R(T) and thermistor exponential factor B were obtained using measurements in the climatic test chamber. A uniaxial anemometer was formed using a thick-film segmented thermistor, which was placed in the hole drilled in rectangular piece of thermally insulating material. The uniaxial anemometer was used for the optimization of operating point of segmented thermistors as self-heating/wind sensing devices. The dc supply voltage was correlated with the air temperature sub-ranges (RCV). The power save mode such as 30s self-heating/5 min pause was used to measure the thermistor response on stable wind blow. The three-axis' anemometer was formed using five sensor devices placed in five holes drilled in the cubical piece of thermally insulating material: three thermistor sensors measure wind speed on the x, y, z - axes, the fourth sensor Pt 1000 measures the air temperature T, while the fifth sensor (capacitive type) measures humidity H. The obtained sensitivity and inaccuracy were compared with respective ones of other anemometers.",

AB  - Magnesium aluminate, MgAl2O4, and other alumina-based spinels are refractory ceramics with high hardness and resistance to chemical attack while also being possible microwave dielectrics. Pure MgAl2O4 can be optically transparent when fully dense. Spinels exhibit inversion, which results in disorder among occupancy of A and B site cations. The goal of this study was to examine the effects of mechanical activation and composition on the temperature required for spinel formation and the site occupancy in the resulting spinel. 
MgAl2O4 was produced by solid state reaction between MgO and alpha-Al2O3. The starting powders were mixed by ball milling to homogenize the powders without significant particle size reduction. Mechanical activation of mixed powders was performed in a high-energy planetary ball mill in air for 1 h. Powders were compacted at 300 MPa. Heat treatments were performed in air, at temperatures ranging from 1200 to 1500 °C with 2 h dwell time, to determine the amount of spinel formation as a function of temperature. Phase composition and microstructure of initial powders and heated samples were determined by means of X-ray diffraction, particle size analysis, and scanning electron microscopy. The influence of milling and consolidation parameters were studied by electrical measurements and mechanical characterization. 
The main results of this study were that mechanical activation for 60 minutes initiated a mechano-chemical reaction, and resulted in spinel formation at much lower temperatures than within non-activated powders. Microstructures of ceramics sintered below 1400 oC indicated that final stage sintering started at much lower temperatures for activated samples than for non-activated samples. 
Changes in microstructure parameters, as a consequence of mechanical treatment and subsequent heating of investigated powder mixtures, strongly affect electrical and mechanical properties of the final ceramics.

Characterization of MgAl2O4 sintered ceramics

AB  - Single crystalline phase MgAl2O4 is made from the predetermined composition of MgO-Al2O3 powder mixture by using ball-milling. Mixtures of MgO and Al2O3 are treated in planetary ball mill for 30, 60, 90 and 120 minutes, in air. The aim of this experiment was to examine phase composition, microstructure, and densification behavior of all sintered samples and to find out which sample has the best features for further use. AB  - Single phase MgAl2O4 was made from a one-to-one molar ratio of MgO and Al2O3 powders mixed using ball-milling. Mixtures of MgO and Al2O3 were subsequently treated in planetary ball mill for 30, 60, 90 and 120 minutes in air. The aim of this study was to examine phase composition, microstructure, and densification behavior of sintered specimens. After sintering in dilatometer at 1500 °C, the powder was converted to single phase MgAl2O4. The results show that mechanical activation improved the densification behavior of MgAl2O4 sintered specimens, and it reduced the onset temperature for sintering by approx. 100 oC. Based on dilatometer data, powders were subsequently densified at 1450 oC by hot pressing. Almost аll specimens exhibited full density, while sample activated for 30 minutes showed the fastest densification rate.

AB  - Magnesium aluminate has spinel structure and very good mechanical, chemical, and thermal properties. Owing to these properties, it has a wide range of applications including refractory ceramics, optically transparent ceramic windows and armors. Its low dielectric permeability and low loss tangent enable its using for integrated electronic devices, as well. Furthermore, as a porous ceramic, magnesium aluminate has important application as humidity sensor, catalyst and filter for waste water purification. In this paper, synthesis and characterization of MgAl2O4 was performed. Stochiometric ratio of MgO and Al2O3powders was mixed and calcined within the temperatures range 1500-1800 oC to produce pure spinel phase. Thereafter pellets were crushed and treated in planetary ball mill for 60 minutes to obtained fine grain. All powders, calcined and milled, were examined for phase composition, crystal structure, and morphology. The obtained results showed that by increasing the temperature denser samples but more fragile have been synthesized. Milling for 1 hour leads to crumble of bigger particles and getting finer, single phase powders. XRPD and Raman spectroscopy showed disorder in crystal structure after milling.

AB  - Iron oxide, in the form of magnetite (MG)–functionalized porous wollastonite (WL), was used as an adsorbent for heavy metal ions (cadmium and nickel) and oxyanions (chromate and phosphate) removal from water. The porous WL was synthesized from calcium carbonate and siloxane by controlled sintering process using low molecular weight submicrosized poly(methyl methacrylate) as a pore-forming agent. The precipitation of MG nanoparticles was carried out directly by a polyol-medium solvothermal method or via branched amino/carboxylic acid cross-linker by solvent/nonsolvent method producing WL/MG and WL-γ-APS/MG adsorbents, respectively. The structure/properties of MG functionalized WL was confirmed by applying FTIR, Raman, XRD, Mössbauer, and SEM analysis. Higher adsorption capacities of 73.126, 66.144, 64.168, and 63.456 mg g−1 for WL-γ-APS/MG in relation to WL/MG of 55.450, 52.019, 48.132, and 47.382 mg g−1 for Cd2+, Ni2+, phosphate, and chromate, respectively, were obtained using nonlinear Langmuir model fitting. Adsorption phenomena were analyzed using monolayer statistical physics model for single adsorption with one energy. Kinetic study showed exceptionally higher pseudo-second-order rate constants for WL-γ-APS/MG, e.g., 1.17–13.4 times, with respect to WL/MG indicating importance of both WL surface modification and controllable precipitation of MG on WL-γ-APS.
