AB - Karst areas are generally disadvantaged for traditional farming due to limited water availability, poor soils and topographic difficulties. Therefore, their population density has always been lower throughout history than in other landscapes. However, because of this fact, their natural vegetation has often remained in better condition than in other areas, and due to their special surface and subsurface morphology, karst areas are popular tourist destinations in many places. As a result, many karst areas have been declared national parks (NPs) in Europe and other continents as well. A national park can have a number of benefits for the protected area: it primarily protects nature, but it also provides employment opportunities and can bring extra financial resources to those who live there. However, there are also certain restrictions that may result in conflicts. In recent decades, there has been an increasing demand that national parks should also serve the well-being of local people in addition to their primary nature conservation goals. The development of tourism is typical in most national parks, but this development may also conflict with nature conservation goals and, in some cases, with local people. Thus, in the park–local people–tourists triangle, all relationships must be properly balanced. To analyse these relationships, we established an international research project that has run from 2017 to 2022 and is supported by the National Research, Development and Innovation Office of Hungary. In the framework of this project, we carried out a regional comparison and examined karst national parks (and in one case a nature park) from 6 countries using the same methodology. The methods included demographic analysis in a GIS framework, questionnaire surveys with local people, visitors and NP employees, and interviews with key actors (NP managers, mayors, research experts). The examined sites were Aggtelek NP (Hungary), Slovak Karst NP (Slovakia), Tara NP (Serbia), Krka NP (Croatia), Northern Pindos NP (Greece), and Apuseni Nature Park (Romania). As we are in the last year of the project, we try to present a generalized picture of the results in a concise way. Moreover, in two other papers of this conference, we present more detailed case studies from two of the examined sites.

AB - The tourist industry is a very complex system. Its success depends on several different components, where a significant place has the local community. The attitude of residents towards tourism development and engagement greatly affects the sustainability of tourist destinations. Following the above, the paper aims to determine to which extent the local community supports tourism development in the Zlatibor tourist center (Republic of Serbia). An instrument called the “Tourism Quality of Life Scale” (TQOL) was used for this purpose The results showed that residents are aware of the importance of segments of quality of life. A moderate level of satisfaction in this tourism area is expressed. Also, the index value (TQOL score) confirmed the positive effect of tourism for most residents. The pioneer application of this model in the continental space of Europe is a qualitative contribution to further research.

AB - The aim of this paper is to present the results of our research on the knowledge and awareness of visitors and residents about karst and protected areas (PAs). The research was carried out in the Tara National Park (NP) in western Serbia, which includes karst landscapes. By conducting surveys with visitors, local population, and National Park employees, as well as interviews with local key persons, NP key persons and external experts, we got a deeper understanding of the issues related to knowledge on karst and PAs. We also investigated whether local people or visitors knew the values of karst landscapes in general and how they were informed or learned about the Tara NP. In addition, we also analysed the content of these topics in school curricula and textbooks in Serbia. We concluded that the awareness about the researched topics is unsatisfactory at present thus it should be raised to a higher level, both in the case of local people and in the case of visitors. One of the most significant ways to improve the current level is through formal, non-formal, and informal education.

AB - The attitude that humans are separated from the overall ecosystem of the planet Earth and that their needs are primary compared to other living beings has led to the endangerment of basic resources (water, air, and soil), but also the irreversible loss of certain species of flora and fauna. Therefore, sustainable, i.e. balanced development should be the principle on which the development of all activities, including tourism, is based. There are fewer and fewer preserved parts of nature, and the need for travels to areas where the authentic landscape has been conserved is increasing. Sustainable ecotourism appears as a link between the need to protect nature and its conscious use. The doctoral dissertation analyzed the administrative area of Srem, which is divided into seven municipalities. An evaluation of the natural and anthropogenic potentials of the area for the development of sustainable ecotourism was carried out. In addition to the classic tourist valorization, the research also used land suitability analysis, based on the application of a geographic information system and analytical hierarchical process, intending to identify locations suitable for the development of sustainable ecotourism. The assessment was carried out based on five groups of criteria (topography, other natural features, protection of natural resources, accessibility, and community characteristics), within which 11 sub-criteria were defined. As a result of weighted overlay analysis, a synthesis map was obtained showing four suitability categories: most suitable, suitable, marginally suitable, and unsuitable. The results showed that suitable areas for the development of sustainable ecotourism are located within protected natural areas and in their protective zones. On the other hand, in some municipalities, suitable locations are also found outside the mentioned zones, in areas where nature is still preserved and where there are attractive natural and cultural resources. According to the obtained results, potential tourism products of the district and associated municipalities were proposed. Furthermore, the existing development challenges and opportunities for overcoming them were highlighted.

On the other hand, in some municipalities, suitable locations are also found outside the mentioned zones, in areas where nature is still preserved and where there are attractive natural and cultural resources. According to the obtained results, potential tourism products of the district and associated municipalities were proposed. Furthermore, the existing development challenges and opportunities for overcoming them were highlighted.",

AB - This paper represents a case study examining attitudes of various stakeholders about Tara National Park (NP) (Serbia), identifying also the factors that shape these attitudes. The survey method was applied to a sample of 405 respondents (197 community members and 208 visitors). In addition, 15 interviews with specific key actors (NP executives and local key persons) were performed. The research confirmed the presence of different types of conflicts among stakeholders, mostly between the NP and the local population (primarily farmers) associated with land use in agriculture and the ban on the construction of facilities. The community recognizes tourism as the highest priority, unlike the NP leaders and visitors, who emphasize protection and conservation (especially biodiversity) as the primary goals of future NP development. The opinions of the local population are divided concerning support for the existence of the NP and the importance of it as a part of the national heritage. Most of them do not recognize the economic benefits resulting from the proclamation of the NP and do not see themselves as participants in the decision-making process. The findings also reveal that visitors strongly support tourism development and activities following the principles of nature protection. This category of respondents is only partly affected by the fact that this area has been declared a NP. The analysis shows that certain socioeconomic factors considerably influence the opinions of both community and visitors. Results suggest that future actions should be aimed at improving the coordination of various stakeholders, especially the NP and the community, through different social mobilization activities. Stimulating small businesses and providing incentives for agriculture and nature tourism development could be a useful step forward.

AB - In the 21st century, many countries are starting to use geothermal energy (GTE) as a new energy source. Serbia also has the potential to use it as a renewable energy source. The complex geological structure of its terrain has given rise to a large number of thermomineral springs and geothermal wells. Based on the existing measurements, the geothermal heat flow density in Serbia ranges from 80 to 120 mW/m2, which is above Europe's average (60 mW/m2). Currently, there are 66 projects in Serbia that directly use geothermal energy. There are an estimated 1005 geothermal heat pump units. Their power varies between 10 kW and 40 kW and they operate for 2860 full load hours per year. This paper deals with the development, current state and perspectives of geothermal energy utilization for heating in Serbia. To illustrate the current state of geothermal energy utilization in Serbia, spa settlements Vranjska Banja and Gornja Trepča, as well as the Bogatić Municipality have been singled out as examples of good practice. The presented analysis includes determining the available amount of geothermal energy and its utilization for district heating or heating of selected public facilities. The concept and methodology of the presented research are based on data collection through literature review, surveys and field research. The analysis confirms the cost-effectiveness of using geothermal energy and reveals numerous ecological advantages over other energy sources. However, it was concluded that аlthough there is potential, geothermal sources, as a renewable energy source, are used negligibly in Serbia.

U socijalističkoj Jugoslaviji nizom zakonskih rešenja (1945. i 1959. godine) i ustavnim aktima (1963. i 1974. godine), Kosovo i Metohija dobija široku autonomiju. Pravni pritisak i otežani životni uslovi uticali su na dalju emigraciju srpske populacije. Stanje je dodatno pogoršano političko-društvenim faktorima, a zatim i vojno-bezbednosnim akcijama krajem 1990-ih i početkom 2000-ih godina. Takvi trendovi imaju kontinuitet do danas. Prostor Kosova i Metohije je ostao bez autohtonog srpskog stanovništva, dok je povratak interno raseljenih lica na zanemarljivom nivou. Kao rezultat ovih procesa, Srbi su 2020. godine činili manje od 5% stanovništva Kosova i Metohije.

AB - By the example of Tara National Park (NP), we present how the geoheritage can and should be presented in a NP where the primary role is played by biology. Tara NP has a rich geoheritage, especially its karst phenomena, which include gorges (e.g. the 1000-m-deep Drina Gorge), plateaus with dolines, dry valleys, and uvalas as well as springs and travertines. In addition, ophiolites also enrich the geoheritage; hence, the area has a high geodiversity. Large reservoirs of the territory provide an opportunity to study the anthropogenic impact on hydrology and geomorphology. After presenting the geoheritage elements of the area, we examine the views and knowledge of local people and visitors about karst and geotourism with the help of a questionnaire survey. The results show that local residents support the further development of tourism, but geotourism is a rather new concept for them. On the contrary, tourists are more familiar with geotourism. Among the development perspectives, tourists support those that involve only minor environmental changes, that is in agreement with NP policy. Finally, we formulate some suggestions about geotourism development in the area. First, we outline some plans for new geo-educational trails and viewpoints. Second, we highlight the possibility to increase the geo-content of some already existing programs (e.g. boat tours). Third, we emphasize that geotourism of Tara should be connected to neighbouring areas. A new geopark is already under planning, which would include the area of Tara NP as well.

AB - The study examines how tourists perceive the security crisis in the MENA region and to what extent it affects their travel decision process. It is based on a survey conducted among Serbian young adult and younger middle-aged residents. The survey tracked the demographic and socioeconomic characteristics of the respondents, their travel habits and attitudes towards the security situation in the Mediterranean. The research shows that the target population is well-aware of the current security situation. The non-parametric statistical tests conducted reveal differences by gender in risk perception. Even though a relocation of tourism demand in Serbia has occurred because of the security crisis, the study findings indicate that the security situation is not a decisive factor in destination selection.

abstract = "The study examines how tourists perceive the security crisis in the MENA region and to what extent it affects their travel decision process. Even though a relocation of tourism demand in Serbia has occurred because of the security crisis, the study findings indicate that the security situation is not a decisive factor in destination selection., La investigación tiene por objetivo determinar cómo los turistas perciben la crisis de seguridad en la región MENA y en qué medida afecta al proceso de decisión de viaje.

AB - Karst terrains are often protected as national parks (NP) thanks to their spectacular landforms and biologi cal features. These areas are often relatively rarely inhabited, which contributes to the preservation of all forms of natural heritage. Considering the national parks, the general (simplified) question is, whom they should serve: the protection of nature, the well-being (and education) of tourists or the benefit of local peo ple. Naturally, all of these goals are important, but sometimes contradictory. The above question arises more specifically, when the area of the NP has been inhabited for centuries, but depopulation and ageing are the dominant processes today. The above facts are valid for Tara NP – our case study area, established in 1981 in western Serbia. The area is a typical medium mountain continental karst with doline dotted karst plateaus. Its most significant landmarks are gorges, whereas caves are small, vertical and not suitable for tourism. The biological values (endemic species, large bear population) were also crucial in the foundation of the NP. During its 38-year long history, the social political context (socialism, war, market economy) has been widely varied, which had an impact on the opera tion and goals of the NP. In our study, we conducted a questionnaire survey asking local people, tourists, NP employees and managers, as well as external experts, about how they perceive the advantages and drawbacks of Tara NP. The systematized results are intended to contribute to solving the management issues in the na ture–tourism–community triangle.

AB - Forest fires represent a serious threat to the tourism industry. In Europe, Portugal is most vulnerable to fire, followed by the Mediterranean countries. In the period 1980-2018, an average of 18,025 fires was recorded in Portugal, while the average annual burned area was 116,894 ha. The trend of the number of fires is increasing (statistically significant at p≤0.01). During 2017, fires affected 540,630 ha in Portugal, accounting for about 5.9% of the state territory. Statistically significant (p≤0.01) downward trends were found for Spain (burned areas), France (burned
areas), and Italy (both parameters). The downward trends identified for Greece were not statistically significant. Natural conditions conducive to the occurrence and spread of fires in the Mediterranean area are dry periods during the summer, dry land without watercourses, and vegetation that is extremely vulnerable to fire. In these countries, the major tourist and fire seasons almost coincide. Forest fires endanger human lives, as well as tourism infrastructure and superstructure, and contribute to creating a negative public image of a tourist destination. Future research should pay attention to improving the prognosis of forest fires.

AB - Tourism sustainability is a ubiquitous topic of scientific circles. To this day, there is controversy about the environmental, economic and socio-cultural sustainability of this global industry. Although selective forms are increasingly being promoted, mass tourism is still dominant, with many consequences. Its impacts are especially visible in small and sensitive areas, with many visitors and associated infrastructure (uncontrolled urbanization). Therefore, this paper aims to point out the sustainability of its development in the area of the mountain center Zlatibor in
southwestern Serbia. As one of the most visited destinations after the capital of Belgrade and Vrnjačka Banja Spa, in the last two decades have been under increasing pressure that exceeds its capacity. The European Union methodology for comparative indicators of sustainable tourism was used. The survey was supplemented by an analysis of official statistics. The obtained results highlighted numerous problems in terms of environmental sustainability (red zone), while a
significantly better situation was observed in terms of a social and economic system. In this way, this research can be a starting point for key tourism policymakers and future development directions.

AB - There are numerous pull forces that determine destination choice. In the contemporary turbulent
conditions, safety and security risks have a growing role. This is particularly evident in the Mediterranean region, bearing in mind that the political crisis in the Arab world has reflected in this region as the largest receptive market. Therefore, the study has been conducted to determine which factors are the most important in the process of choosing a destination and whether the recent crises have affected travel habits. In addition to the descriptive statistics, the data obtained by the Likert scale were analyzed by independent samples t-test in SPSS. The results have revealed that price, service quality, and risk-related issues are the main parameters of destination choice. In this regard, the respondents expressed their understanding of contemporary security risks in the Mediterranean (terrorist acts, militant groups, migration crisis, etc.). The research also showed the influence of different sources of information on travel habits, primarily word-of-mouth process, and mass media. The crisis has affected the demand allocation, but not trip cancellation. Based on the abovementioned we can conclude that safety and security risks are not the only and decisive factor but represent an important parameter in the destination choice.

AB - Despite the significant natural potential, geothermal energy in Serbia has traditionally been used in balneology and recreation, while its share in the country’s total energy balance is almost negligible (0.05%). The present paper deals with the City Municipality of Vranjska Banja as a pioneer in the territory of Serbia in using geothermal energy for heating. The concept and methodology of the present research are directly related to the utilization of geothermal resources for district heating in the Vranjska Banja area. The presented analysis includes: determining the available amount of energy, identifying the energy needs of selected public
facilities, and the estimation of investment necessary for energy utilization. A survey, combined with field research, is focused on four public facilities connected to the heating system relying on geothermal sources, as well as on two facilities that should be connected to the system in the next phases. The results show economic, ecological, and technological advantages of using geothermal heating systems, as well as the acceptable price of equipment maintenance. An economic assessment of the transition of one facility from the existing heating system to a system relying on geothermal energy has also been made. The analysis confirms the cost-effectiveness
of using geothermal energy and reveals numerous ecological advantages (safe heating, absence of CO2 emission) over other energy sources.

AB - Former industrial communities in the Iron Gates area are facing development challenges. At the same time, examples of successful redevelopment in such communities exist both internationally and in the Danube region. The project aims at using a transdisciplinary case study method in order to: identify and analyze existing redevelopment initiatives, select pilot communities in the
project region and negotiate with them development scenarios for economic revitalization. The main scientific and practical outputs will include a system model of possible sustainable revival in former industrial communities and a practical Tool Kit for community-based local redevelopment.

AB - The area of Kosovo and Metohija has always attracted researchers, including a prominent geographer Јovan Cvijić. This was due to its strategic position, physical-geographical features, but also because of the dynamic ethnographic processes. Populated by Slavic tribes from the earliest times, the greatest rise was experienced in the medieval Nemanjić state. After the fall of the Serbian state under Ottoman rule, a large number of Serbs moved to the north, while the Arbanasi (Albanians) occupied this area. Impoverished by the Balkan and the First World War, Kosovo and Metohija became a part of the first Yugoslav state. Тhe first half of the 20th century was marked by increase in the share of the Albanian population, with the planned immigration of Serbs through colonization processes in the late 1920s and 1930s. After the Second World War and the formation of the SFRY, the Serbian national question was ignored and pushed into the background. The breakup of the federal-state has led to the culmination of Albanian nationalism in K&M, which soon has grown into an armed conflict. With the NATO involvement and the bombing of the FR Yugoslavia, and support of the Albanians, one of the greatest ethnic cleansings in the contemporary history was carried out. Today, ten years after the unilateral declaration of Kosovo's independence, the key issues of protecting national interests and improving the living conditions of the Serbian community in the southern province have been negotiated.

AB - Located on the coast of the Adriatic Sea, Montenegro has been an important receptive market for decades. In accordance with strategic documents, tourism has been identified as а leading economic activity in Montenegro. Although it has а diversified tourist offer, the emphasis has been put on coastal tourism. Adapting to changes in the market, the offer has been transformed from mass, social vacations towards individual products intended to premium customers. Therefore, the aim of this paper is to evaluate the effects of the current tourism policy defined Ьу Montenegro tourism development strategy to 2020. The analysis includes the key indicatшs of the tourism industry. The results have shown that seasonality is the major obstacle for the balanced tourism development. Hence, all eff orts should Ье directed towards creating products that exceed classic "sun, sand, and sea" tourism model.

Tourism development and regional disparities in Serbia

AB - This paper discusses regional disparities and general national trends in the development of tourism industry in Serbia. Serbia has a rich and well-preserved cultural and natural heritage, which means that this country holds significant potential for the development of tourism. Our analysis assessed the dynamics of tourism development by using census data and focusing on such indicators as the population size of different regions, the share of people employed in tourism, the proportion of economically active population and tourism traffic (the number of foreign tourists and overnight stays). All indicators were analyzed by calculating the index of change. The results show that in Serbia, tourism has not yet achieved an adequate level of development and plays a secondary role in the country’s economy even though it could contribute to the demographic revitalization of Serbian regions. There is also a steady growth in the number of people employed in the tourism sector. Among other Serbian regions, Belgrade has the most thriving tourism industry due to its status of the capital city. Other regions also demonstrate significant growth in the traffic of foreign tourists, especially Zlatibor, Moravica, and Toplica. Adequate management and promotion of these destinations on the international tourism market have proven to be quite effective.

AB - Cultural tourism is a very important tourism segment, which has been recording constant growth. The core of cultural tourism is a willingness to become familiar with other nations, cultures, and customs. Visiting monuments and memorials are the most common way to learn about foreign history and art. The monuments built during the existence of the Social Federative Republic of Yugoslavia represent prominent heritage, but also unique artistic achievements in European architecture from XX century. Therefore, the aim of this paper is to evaluate the heritage from the mentioned period, to compare the current state with the “golden” Yugoslav period and to propose strategies for the future tourism development. During the Yugoslav period, these monuments
and memorials had commemorative, educative, and propaganda purpose. The major memorials were visited yearly by millions of people, so they also became important tourist attractions. After the disintegration of SFR Yugoslavia, these monuments were forgotten and neglected due to new political order. They became an unwanted legacy unknown for the visitors out of the territory of the former state union. Observing the global tourism demand, these memorials could be valorized through several forms of tourist activities (thematic routes, dark tourism, events, etc.). Furthermore, the transnational cooperation with the former Yugoslav republics could enable creating regional tours, which would be recognizable at the international level.

AB - In the Deliblato Sands Austrian pine (Pinus nigra Arnold) and Scots pine (P. sylvestris L.) are present. These species mainly constitute single species plantations which are very endangered by fires. The greatest fires in this area were recorded in 1973, 1990, 1996 and 2007. In this stand type, rapid spread of diseases and pests is also the problem. In the Deliblato Sands such stands should be avoided, especially on large areas. The pines should be mixed with deciduous species, and prime consideration should be given to habitat conditions. Deciduous species that are autochthonous in this area (limes and oaks) should be favoured.

AB - Tourism is one of the fastest growing activities in the world. This is confirmed by data on the number of tourists and overnight stays, followed by pronounced economic effects. Modern tourism business requires a trained and skilled workforce. This is especially important if we take into account that tourism is a labor-intensive industry. The man is the main service producer. Education of the staff for work in the service sector requires knowledge from various fields (geography, economics, sociology, management, philology, psychology, ecology, technology, medicine, etc.). Consequently, tourism workers must possess a broad general and humanistic culture and education. The aim of this paper is to analyze the study programmes of higher education institutions from Serbia which educate staff in the field of tourism and hospitality. This will point out the multidisciplinary knowledge required in both operational as well in the managerial and scientific-research sector.
