AB - The electrochemical reduction of 2,4,6-trinitrotoluene (TNT) was investigated by cyclic voltammetry on a platinum electrode in aqueous sodium chloride solutions with acetonitrile containing different concentrations of TNT. The obtained cyclic voltammograms showed three distinct reduction peaks in the potential range of -0.45 to -0.8 V (vs. an Ag/AgCl (3 M KCl) reference electrode), which refer to the multi-step process of TNT reduction. The calibration curves of the dependence of the first peak current on the TNT concentration were linear in the ranges 4.4-638.4 μM and 0.11-4.40 μM for two different scan rates, 200 mV s-1 and 20 mV s-1, respectively. The detection limit was 0.11 μM. Acetonitrile chemisorption on Pt surface took place and caused thus modified platinum electrode to exhibit an electrochemically stabile behaviour. Hence, a very high reproducibility over a prolonged time and voltammetric cycling was provided for using a Pt wire that is easy to handle as a suitable material for TNT sensing. Additionally, it was confirmed by testing the acetonitrile modified Pt wire for TNT detection in river water. © 2010 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

AB - This work studies the introduction of cleaner production (CP) in the tank farm of the Pancevo Oil Refinery. From 2003 to 2008, substantial investments in storage technology and equipment were made in order to minimize the emissions of volatile organic compounds (VOCs). This article analyzes the effects of the CP activities using a model of tank farm emissions before and after reconstruction. US EPA TANKS software was used in order to develop a comprehensive model of the tank farm emissions. The year 2006 was accepted as representative for the analyses and related technical and production data as well as meteorological information were employed in the development of the model. The results show that the total VOC emissions were 37.6% lower after reconstruction and that the emissions of the major pollutant benzene were decreased by 62.7%. The effects of the CP activities were analyzed through the reduction of ecological damage, elements related to the operating costs, liability issues and the company's image. Future tank farm reconstruction activities in the Oil Refinery, Pancevo were proposed and their environmental effects predicted. An indicator of the expected decrease in VOC pollution was developed and quantified, with the aim of its use for quick calculations in similar cases. © 2010 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

AB - In this paper both theoretical and experimental approach to a possible interaction between collagen hydrolyzate and fullerole C-60(OH)(24) have been considered. In vitro and in vivo experiments were performed. Based on FT-IR spectroscopy, bands of amide I, II and III, from collagen hydrolyzate were analyzed, as well as the characteristic bands of fullerole. Based on experimental results, torsion types of interaction between collagen hydrolyzate and fullerole C-60(OH)(24) have been considered. According to in vivo experiments, fullerole initiates fibroblast cells production and after a two-month skin treatment it improves collagen and elastin production. This indicates that fullerole effects intermolecular communications from collagen fibers through integrines and microtubules to cell nucleus.

AB - Hydroxyapatite (HAp) was modified by the action of various hydrophobic agents based on silicon-containing compounds. The influence of the type of applied agent on the thermodynamic and kinetic parameters of the cross-linking of poly(dimethyl siloxane)/HAp composites was investigated. All the modified HAp particles became hydrophobic and these samples were used to synthesize the polysiloxane/hydroxyapatite composites (PDMS/HAp). The possible modes of interaction between the hydroxyapatite and hydrophobing agents were discussed. The most probable interaction between hydroxyapatite and the applied hydrophobing agents is hydrogen bonding. PDMS/HAp composites were formed directly in the cell of the DSC and cross-linking was investigated in situ. It was determined that the introduction of hydroxyapatite into polysiloxane matrices changed the enthalpy of cross-linking, as well as the activation energy of cross-linking and reaction order, while the introduction of modified HAp led to thermodynamic and kinetic parameters more similar to those of the cross-linking of unfilled elastomer.
