AB - This paper presents two classes of integer codes that are suitable for use in local area networks. The first class of codes can correct h-bit burst errors within one b-bit byte and detect l-bit burst errors within one b-bit byte (1 ≤ h < l < b), while the second class of codes, in addition to correcting/detecting the mentioned types of errors, can also detect d-bit burst errors within two b-bit bytes (1 ≤ d < b). Both classes of codes are defined over integer rings and are generated by computer search. To evaluate the performance of both classes of codes, we analyze their probabilities of incorrect decoding for binary symmetric and bursty channel.

AB - One of the most important characteristics of all error control codes (ECCs) is the complexity of the encoding/decoding algorithms. Today, there are many ECCs that can correct multiple bit errors, but at the price of high encoding/decoding complexity. Among the rare exceptions are integer ECCs (IECCs), whose serial encoding/decoding algorithms run in O(n) time, where n is the codeword length. In this article, we show that IECCs can be encoded/decoded even faster, that is, that their parallel encoding/decoding algorithms have O(log2n) time complexity.

AB - This paper presents two types of integer codes capable of correcting burst asymmetric errors within a byte. The presented codes are constructed with the help of a computer and are very efficient in terms of redundancy. The results of a computer search have shown that, for practical data lengths up to 4096 bits, the presented codes use up to two check-bits less than the best burst asymmetric error correcting codes. Besides this, it is shown that the presented codes are suitable for implementation on modern processors.

AB - The paper elaborates the application of stochastic digital measurement method (SDMM) in embedded systems. It has been proven in the literature that the optimal SDMM resolution is three-bit and that the optimal number system for application in signal processing is also three-bit. These facts motivated the authors to analyze the optimal resolutions of stochastic A/D
conversion, stochastic processing, and stochastic D/A conversion.

AB - This paper presents a new method for stochastic measurement of wind power and energy. Compared to the existing approaches, this method has two advantages: first, it is much simpler and cheaper to implement, and second, it can be easily integrated with cup anemometers. In this way, it is possible to construct a low-cost mobile device capable of measuring wind power and energy. In order to prove the validity of our method, we have conducted several laboratory experiments. The obtained results have shown that, over the time interval of 100 s, wind power and energy can be measured with an accuracy of 0.09%.

AB - This paper presents a class of integer codes capable of correcting l-bit burst asymmetric errors within a b-bit byte (1 ≤ l < b) and double asymmetric errors within a codeword. The presented codes are constructed with the help of a computer and have the potential to be used in unamplified optical networks. In addition, the paper derives the upper bound on code length and shows that the proposed codes are efficient in terms of redundancy.

AB - The paper proposes a method and device for on-line temperature measurement with Pt-100 sensor operating in a nonlinear mode. The sensor measures the temperature in range of 00C to 2000C, whereas the measured data are processed by applying a two-bit stochastic digital measurement method. The proposal is theoretically analyzed and tested experimentally. It is shown that the accuracy of the method depends on the accuracy of the sensor. At a sampling frequency of 1 MHz, the maximum accuracy is reached in 17.5 sec. and is equal to 0.015% of full scale (FS). On the other hand, when the measurement time interval is 0.1 sec. (the shortest measurement interval), the accuracy is equal to 0.1% of FS. Therefore, the proposed device can be used for both calibration and measurement purposes.

AB - In most communication networks, error probabilities 1 → 0 and 0 → 1 are equally likely to occur. However, in short-range optical networks (SRONs), such as local and access networks, this is not the case. In these networks, photons may fade or fail to be detected, but new photons cannot be generated. Hence, if the receiver operates correctly, only asymmetric (1 → 0) errors can occur. Motivated by this fact, the authors of this chapter have constructed four classes of integer codes capable of correcting various types of asymmetric errors. The most attractive feature of all these codes is their ability to be implemented "for free" (in software). This is achieved by using integer and lookup table operations, which are supported by all processors. The aim of this chapter is to overview four classes of integer asymmetric codes and to illustrate their potential for use in modern SRONs. Topics covered include: fundamentals in the design of integer codes, necessary and sufficient conditions for constructing integer asymmetric codes and the processor-based strategy for implementation of these codes.

AB - Classical measurement approach is often described as a process of discretizing an analogue signal in order to easily process it in some type of digital signal processor. Although this approach has been considered to be universally applicable, practical experience has shown that some signals (e.g. fast and/or noisy signals) cannot be always precisely measured. To overcome this problem, in the late 1990s, a new measurement approach called stochastic digital measurement method (SDMM) was presented. At the beginning, this method was intended for high-precision measurements of the integral (the mean value) of a product of two signals. However, in the late 2000s, it was shown that SDMM can be used to compute the Discrete Fourier Transform (DFT). Compared to the classical DFT/FFT processors, SDMM-based ones have two important advantages: first, they are much simpler and cheaper to implement, and second, they allow us to compute individual DFT components either in isolation or in parallel. This chapter is a review of the evolution of SDMM with a special emphasis on a two-bit SDMM. Topics covered include: theoretical foundations of SDMM, the architecture of SDMM-DFT processor and an example of prototype instrument used in power grid networks.

Compared to the classical DFT/FFT processors, the proposed model has two advantages: first, it is much simpler and cheaper to implement, and second, it allows us to compute individual DFT components either in isolation or in parallel. In order to prove the validity of our model, we have simulated the measurement of reactive power and energy. In addition, we have conducted several experiments under field and laboratory conditions. The obtained results have shown that reactive power and energy can be measured with an accuracy of several ppm. © 2018 Elsevier Ltd

abstract = "In this paper we present the model of digital stochastic DFT processor. © 2018 Elsevier Ltd",

AB - In most communication networks, error probabilities 1 → 0 and 0 → 1 are equally likely to occur. However, in some optical networks, such as local and access networks, this is not the case. In these networks, the number of received photons never exceeds the number of transmitted ones. Hence, if the receiver operates correctly, only 1 → 0 errors can occur. Motivated by this fact, in this paper, we present a class of integer codes capable of correcting burst and random asymmetric (1 → 0) errors within a b-bit byte. Unlike classical codes, the proposed codes are defined over the ring of integers modulo 2b −1. As a result, they have the potential to be implemented in software without any hardware assist.
