AB - In this investigation, samples of strontium-gadolinium-oxide (SrGd2O4) doped with different Yb3+ (2, 4 and 6 at%) and constant Ho3+ (1 at%) contents and co-doped with Bi3+ (2 at%) were prepared using the glycine-assisted sol–gel method. The pure orthorhombic SrGd2O4 phase, space group Pnma, was revealed using X-ray diffraction in all samples. Transmission electron microscopy discovered agglomerated clusters of spherical particles measuring approximately 150 nm in size. The inclusion of Bi3+ ions into the structure influenced the morphology since the formation of larger grains was observed, with sizes reaching up to ∼1.7 μm. The uniform distribution of all constitutive elements was confirmed by energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy. In all samples, up-conversion emission spectra revealed two dominant green (540 and 550 nm), red (671 nm), and infrared (758 nm) emission lines, due to the 5F4,5S2→5I8, 5F5→5I8, and 5F4,5S2 → 5I7 transitions, respectively. The sample co-doped with Bi3+ showed the most intense photoluminescent emissions, shorter luminescence decay, and the highest quantum yield. Additionally, a significant decrease in the energy band gap value was detected using diffuse reflectance spectroscopy for this sample. Methylene blue was used as a test pollutant to investigate its photocatalytic efficiency under simulated sunlight irradiation. The results show that Bi3+ co-doping deteriorates the photocatalytic efficiency of the SrGd2O4:Yb3+/Ho3+ phase by reducing hydroxyl radical formation.

AB - Layered VOPO4·2H2O is synthesized by the sonochemical method. An X-ray powder diffraction is used to examine the crystal structure, while scanning electron microscopy is used to reveal the morphology of the powder. The crystal structure refinement is performed in the P4/nmmZ space group. The electrochemical intercalation of several cations (Na+, Mg2+, Ca2+, and Al3+) in saturated nitrate aqueous solutions is investigated. The most notable reversible activity is found for the cycling in aluminium nitrate aqueous solution in the voltage range from −0.1 to 0.8 V vs. SCE. During the preparation of the electrode, it is observed that the structure is prone to changes that have not been recorded in the literature so far. Namely, the use of conventional binder PVDF in NMP solution deteriorates the structure and lowers the powder’s crystallinity, while the use of Nafion solution causes the rearrangement of the atoms in a new crystal form that can be described in the monoclinic P21/c space group. Consequently, these structural changes affect electrochemical performances. The observed differences in electrochemical performances are a result of structural rearrangements.

AB - The development of safe, durable, cheap, and environmentally friendly batteries is one of the most important challenges of modern electrochemistry. Hence, there is an interest in the investigation of aqueous batteries with multivalent ions such as calcium, magnesium, or aluminium. Furthermore, the use of polyanionic compounds as cathode material can provide multi-electron transport. VOPO4·2H2O with its layered structure is a particularly interesting and promising material.
The current study is focused on the investigation of VOPO4·2H2O as cathode material in aluminium aqueous rechargeable cells. According to the literature data, the conventional reflux method is mostly used for the material’s synthesis [1]. Here is presented a sonochemical synthesis as a less time- and energy-consuming method, that starts from the mixture of vanadium(V)-oxide, phosphoric acid and water as a reaction media. The synthesis is done within 20 min.
The characterization of the synthesized material includes X-ray powder diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy and cyclovoltammetry (CV).
XRD data were used for both the powders’ phase identification and crystal structure refinement. The structure of the powder was refined in the tetragonal space group P4/nmmZ (No. 129). Crystal structure refinement was based on the Rietveld full profile method [2]. The structure is characterized by infinite layers of PO4 tetrahedra linked to VO6 octahedra by shared oxygen atoms that form 2D sheets in the ab-planes; water molecules are located in the interlayer space. The refined cell parameters, a = b = 6.2136 Å, c = 7.4141 Å, are in good agreement with the literature data. Lattice parameter c is a measure of the interlayer distance, thus varies with water content. The value of the refined c parameter implies that the structure consists two water molecules per formula unit.
The working electrode is prepared from a slurry of sonochemically derived VOPO4·2H2O as an active material, carbon black, and a binder dispersed in a solvent. Two different binders are used: polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF), 2.4 wt% solution in N-methyl-2-pyrrolidone or Nafion, 5 wt% solution in a mixture of lower aliphatic alcohols and water. Cyclic voltammetry measurements are done in several electrolytes to probe the intercalation of various cations such as magnesium, calcium, and aluminium. The best results are obtained when the electrode is cycled in 1M Al(NO3)3 aqueous solution.
This probably originates in different ionic radii.
During the process of electrode preparation, structural changes in the powder are noticed. The structural changes were followed step by step through the combined XRD and FTIR analysis. It turns out that the structure is prone to release water molecules even when the powder is mixed with carbon black and also with the addition of a solvent, which could lead to the formation of a bilayered vanadyl phosphate. It was shown that using different solvents has a diverse impact on the structure, and consequently on powders’ cyclic performances.

AB - Fayalite Fe2SiO4 is synthesized by the solid-state reaction without ball milling. The obtained powder is further structurally and electrochemically examined. Field emission scanning electron microscopy (FESEM) showed that microsized powder is obtained. X-ray powder diffraction (XRD) pattern is used for both phase identification and crystal structure Rietveld refinement. The structure is refined in the orthorhombic Pbnm space group. Mössbauer spectroscopy revealed traces of Fe3+ impurity. The bond valence mapping method is applied for the first time on Fe2SiO4 framework. It shows isolated, non-connected isosurfaces of constant E(Li), which further supports the assumptions of the conversion reactions. Electrochemical performances are investigated through galvanostatic cycling, cyclic voltammetry, and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS). Ex-situ XRD and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) analyses are combined to monitor phase change after galvanostatic cycling and to reveal the working mechanism during electrochemical lithiation.

Electrochemical performances are investigated through galvanostatic cycling, cyclic voltammetry, and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS). Ex-situ XRD and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) analyses are combined to monitor phase change after galvanostatic cycling and to reveal the working mechanism during electrochemical lithiation.",

AB - In this investigation, we have synthesized YbxY1-xF3 solid solutions by fluorination of yttrium and ytterbium sesquioxides with ammonium hydrogen difluoride. According to the XRD analysis, all synthesized YbxY1-xF3 samples have an orthorhombic crystal structure belonging to the β-YF3 structural type. The refinement of crystal structure was done by the Rietveld method within the Pnma space group using the TCH pseudo-Voigt function. The anisotropic peak broadening was analyzed, and the average apparent crystallite size is about 50 nm with a small anisotropy of shape, while the significant microstrain that is highly anisotropic is present in all samples. The temperature-dependent magnetic susceptibility was analyzed by applying the model of a free ion perturbed by the crystal field. We have obtained the effective magnetic quantum numbers Mieff of four Kramer's doublets of Yb3+ ion along with the entire crystal field splitting of the 2F7/2 manifold of Yb3+ in YF3. The acquired maximum energy splitting of the ground level is about 150 K in our most diluted samples. The field-dependent isothermal magnetization measurements were carried out at various temperatures and analyzed by classical Langevin function. Results obtained from magnetic measurements show that all YbxY1-xF3 (x ≠ 0) solid solutions exhibit pure paramagnetic behavior in the whole temperature range from 2 to 300 K, with a predominant antiferromagnetic exchange interactions.

AB - Many works devoted to obtaining nanodispersed BaTiO3 powder modified with different dopants for suitable properties providing. In particular, recently considerable attention has been given to obtaining modified nanopowders BaTiO3 possessing relaxor behavior order to ensure reliable work of dielectrics. Generally, Ca,Zr,Mn, ,Pb and rare earth elements such as Nb,Y adds order to provide stress, inhibit grain growth and provide Pinching effect, and hence to increase dielectrics relaxor behavior. However, there is still an issue associated with obtaining satisfactory stoichiometry of the obtained powder. From this viewpoint Ca,Zr-doped BaTiO3 were prepared with co-precipitation method via multiligand complexes formation and influence of the precursor type on Ca,Zr-doped BaTiO3 stoichiometry were investigated. Their stoichiometry, crystal structure was examined in order to determine preferential solubility site of Ca,Zr ions in perovskite structure. Stoichiometry Ca,Zr-modified BaTiO3 will be evaluated considering different precursor type. X-ray, IR spectroscopy and X-ray fluorescence analysis were carried out to obtain the knowledge on the occupation site in the Ba1-xСaxTi1-yZryO3 perovskite structure. These results proved influence complex formation on Ca,Zr-modified BaTiO3 stoichiometry.

AB - Titanium substrates were electrochemically treated by novel in-situ synthesis method to produce anaphoretic hydroxyapatite/titanium oxide (HAp/TiO2) coating. This synthesis method was performed via anaphoretic deposition of hydroxyapatite and simultaneous anodization of Ti in order to produce highly adherent and strengthened composite coating, where the influence of electric potential, time, electrolyte concentration and pH value of the anodization process on titanium surface roughness and adhesion strength of composite HAp/TiO2 coatings was examined. In situ synthesis was performed in different solutions containing different concentrations of NaOH, HAp and ethanol at different values of time and constant voltage. The effects of anodizing voltage on the morphology and bioactivity of the HAp coating and on the bonding strength between the HAp coating and the anodized substrates were investigated. A modified chemical precipitation method was used to prepare hydroxyapatite powder by the reaction of stoichiometric amount of calcium oxide and phosphoric acid. Prior to novel in situ synthesis of HAp/TiO2 composite coatings, optimization of anodization process of titanium was performed. Anodization was executed under different electric potentials and different distances of counter electrodes from working electrodes, but all experiments had constant quantity of electric charge. Results indicated that highly ordered amorphous TiO2 surface is formed on the Ti substrate after anodic oxidation. Characterization of titanium samples having rectangular contact surfaces of 10×10×0.89 mm included SEM/EDS analyses, X-ray diffraction analyses, AFM surface topography, morphology and roughness analyses and linear measurements of roughness. The prepared coatings were characterized by FE-SEM, XRD and EDS. Adhesion was investigated by ASTM D 3359–97 Test method B. Uniform and adherent HAp/TiO2 composite coating on Ti was obtained. The results of simulated body fluid immersing experiments suggest that obtained HAp coating exhibits promising bioactivity. The obtained coating can be good candidate for bone implants due to improved adhesion.

AB - The optimization of the anodization process of Ti substrate for in situ synthesis of hydroxyapatite/titanium oxide composite coatings on titanium substrate was accomplished. The anodization was performed under 30, 60 and 90 V cell voltage, and the morphology of treated surface, as well as linear and surface roughness, were analysed by field emission-scanning electron microscopy, atomic force microscopy and roughness tester. It was shown by linear and surface roughness analyses that titanium anodized under 60 V has the highest roughness, whereas at 90 V the flattening of the surface occurs. As the highest surface roughness results emerged at 60 V, the novel process of composite anHAp/TiO2 coating synthesis, which comprises simultaneous processes of TiO2 formation and HAp deposition, as well as HAp impregnation within TiO2 surface layer, was performed at this voltage. Ti substrate surface was completely covered by composite coating, with no visible cracks. The adhesion quantified according to ASTM D3359-02 standard is considerably improved with respect to the coatings obtained by cathaphoretic processes, with no need of subsequent sintering.

AB - In this work, the polycrystalline samples Y1-xYbxF3 (x = 0.01, 0.05, 0.1, 0.25, 0.5, 0.75 and 1) were synthesized and characterized by X-ray powder diffraction and magnetic measurements. In the first stage of synthesis, mixed sesquioxides (Y1-xYbx)2O3 were obtained by ceramic technology. In the second stage, obtained mixed sesquioxides were treated with an excess of ammonium hydrogen fluoride in air at 170 °C for 20 h. In the third and last stage, Y1-xYbxF3 samples were obtained by heating the product from the second stage of synthesis at 500 °C for 3 h in an inert atmosphere. The X-ray diffraction revealed that the crystal structure of the Y1-xYbxF3 solid solution is orthorhombic (YF3 structural type). The structure refinements were done by the Rietveld full-profile method within Pnma space group. Magnetic susceptibility measurements of all samples were done in a temperature range 2-300 K by SQUID magnetometer. The relation between magnetic and structural properties was discussed.

AB - Perovskite oxides with the composition LaFe1-xCrxO3 (x = 0.5 and 0.75) have been studied. The samples have been prepared using the mechanochemical treatment. A mixture of crystalline La(OH)3, Fe2O3 and Cr2O3 powders in stoichiometric ratio was mechanochemically treated in a planetary ball mill up to 40 h of milling. The mechanochemical formation of the LaFe1-xCrxO3 perovskite phase was followed by X-ray diffraction and magnetization measurements. The Rietveld refinement of the XRD data shows that the compounds crystallize in an orthorhombic perovskite structure with a random distribution of the Fe and Cr cations at the B sublattice. All structural and microstructural parameters were analyzed. In addition, magnetic measurements for LaFe0.5Cr0.5O3 show clear antiferromagnetic ordering bellow 250 K, which supports above conclusion of random distribution of Fe and Cr cations.

AB - Nanosized perovskite YTiO3 with the mean crystallite size of 18 nm was synthesized for the first time by mechanochemical treatment. The mechanochemical solid state reaction between commercial Y2O3 powder and mechanochemically synthesized TiO powder in molar ratio 0.5:1 was completed for 3 h in a high-energy planetary ball mill in argon atmosphere. The heating in vacuum at 1150 °C for 12 h transforms nanosized YTiO3 to a well-crystallized single-phase perovskite YTiO3. Both samples were characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD) and thermogravimetric (TGA/DTA) analyses, as well as superconducting quantum interference device magnetometer (SQUID) measurements.

AB - Nanostructured amorphous and anatase TiO2 are both considered as high rate Liinsertion/extraction electrode materials. Here we present the preparation of titania on titanium substrate by the anodic oxidation method. The anodization was conducted using a two-electrode configuration under a constant voltage. Highly viscous fluoride containing glycerol electrolyte was used to anodically grow amorphous TiO2 on titanium substrate. The crystal structure was characterized by X-ray diffraction. After thermal treatment at 400 °C amorphous TiO2 crystallizes to anatase phase. The surface morphology was observed by scanning electron microscopy. Electrochemical properties of the as-prepared substrates directly used as anode in lithium-ion cell were examined through galvanostatic discharge/charge tests.
