AB - Dr Vladan Đorđević was not particularly dedicated to the efforts made to found the Medical
Faculty of Belgrade. When such a proposition was brought forward during the discussion on the
Law on the National Health Fund in the National Assembly in December 1879, he was against
it believing that there were no conditions for its establishment and that such conditions would
not be ensured even in the next 30 years. However, when in 1898, the Government he headed
formed the University commission tasked to prepare a bill on elevating the Grand School to
the level of university, he appointed Dr Milan Jovanović Batut, who was a great advocate of the
establishment of the Faculty of Medicine, as a member of the Commission, which eventually
resulted in the adoption of the Law on the University passed on March 5 1905, which envisaged
the establishment of the Faculty of Medicine. In 1926, Vladan was the first one to receive an
honorary doctorate in medicine from the University of Belgrade.

Ова књига је наш покушај да се, колико-толико, у унапред дефинисаном обиму, осветле доприноси Владана Ђорђевића Србији, за коју се борио на начине за које је сматрао да су за њу најбољи и најкориснији. number of Ph.D and master’s students and set on the committees for the
assessment and defence of doctoral dissertations and master’s theses.
At fi rs t, he persued the entire area of paediatric surgery. In time, he
focused his interests on paediatric urogoly which is the area that the majority
of his most important papers pertain to. He produced original surgical
techniques for the treatment of congenital anomalies of genitourinary system
in children, undescended testicles, penoscrotal hypospadias, epispadias, and
other anomalies of the penis, bladder exstrophy, vesicoureteral refl ux, bladder
augmentation and autoaugmentation, and other, oft en complex, bizarre
congenital anomalies in children, Peyronie’s disease, and other conditions such
as trauma and postrauma, avulsions and structure of the urethra found both in
children and adults. He oft en represented the last chance to the patients
affl icted by those conditions. In later years, he directed his attention on
andrological surgery (various forms of intersexualism, transsexualism).
He is the author of the book Atlas of Congenital Anomalies of the External
Genitalia (1999), numerous chapters published in foreign and domestic books and textbooks, the most prominent ones being Ausgewahlte Urologische OP
Techniken (1994), Advances in Urology (1997), Inovations in Urological Surgery

also wrote several articles on paediatric surgery and urology that can be found
in surgical textbooks for students of medicine and urology.
He publi shed over 470 various publications. A great many of his articles
appeared in leading international urology journals. He gave about 350 lectures
at national and international congresses and other professional and scientifi c
gatherings, oft en by invitation. He carried out surgical demonstrations on
many occasions at most prestigious clinics in the world, showing original
operative techniques of reconstructive surgery of congenital anomalies and
disorders of the urogenital tract and disorders, many of which were transferred
by video link to congress meetings. He also delivered many State of the Art
Lectures and moderated, or presided over, congress sessions. He was the
founder and the Head of the Belgrade Centre of European School of
Reconstructive Urologic Surgery (2004). Th e centre organized courses which
were attended by a large number of medical professionals from abroad. In an
anonymous survey by the attendants, the courses were given the highest level
of recognition and declared the best in Europe and the world. In 1991, as part
of the symposium Tendencies and Advances in Medicine, organized to mark the
Belgrade School of Medicine Day, he organized the symposium Advances in
Genital Surgery.
He also made professional and scientifi c fi lms on paediatric urology and
andrological surgery. His video fi lm Male to Female Surgery is included in the
international library of scientifi c video fi lms.
He was Guest Editor No3 (June 1998) and No4 (August 1998) of the
World Journal of Urology for the subject of genitourinary reconstruction. He
was a reviewer for the Journal of Urology, British Journal of Urology, European
Urology, Urology, Brazilian Journal of Urology. He led a number of national and
international scientifi c research projects.
Professor Perović was member of the Serbian Medical Society (SMS) for

AB - Živojin Bumbaširević was born on July 26th, 1920, in Kruševac. He
enrolled at the School of Medicine in Belgrade in 1938. Th e war interrupted his
studies, so he worked as a medic instead. He continued the studies aft er the war
and graduated in 1948.
Aft er completing his internship, he was relocated to the Orthopaedic
Trauma Clinic and in 1950 he commenced his specialisation studies. He passed
t he Specialty Certifi cate Examinations (SCE) in 1955 with fl ying colours. In
1956, he was appointed the head of the department, between 1961 and 1971 he
was assistant director, and between 1971 and 1980 the Director of the Clinic.
Even aft er retiring in 1985, he continued working as a consultant at the
Outpatient Department of the Clinic for several years.
Dr Bumbaširević attended several professional training courses at
orthopaedic and trauma clinics in Paris and Bordeaux.
In 1952, he was elected as an assistant at the School of Medicine. In 1959
his habilitation internship was recognised so he was elected as a docent, and in
1969 he became a professor. He obtained his PhD in 1975, and in 1976 he was
promoted to Full Professor.
He taught orthopaedic and trauma surgery to physicians on specialist
courses. Between 1980 and 1985, he was the Director of Postgraduate Studies
in orthopaedics and traumatology. In 1964, he became a member and, in 1969,
he presided over the speciality certifi cate examinations board for the candidates
taking their SCEs in orthopaedic and trauma surgery. He was also a member
of equivalent boards at Schools of Medicine in Novi Sad and Niš. Between 1967
and 1986, he was on the examination board for candidates taking exams in
general and orthopaedic surgery at the Military Medical Academy (VMA). He
was elected as a corresponding member of the Serbian Academy of Sciences
and Arts (SANU) in 1983, and its full member in 1994.
Academician Bumbaširević wrote two chapters for the textbook Surgery,
edited by S. Petković and S. Bukurov, and one chapter for the monograph
Diabetes mellitus, edited by D. Đurić (1982).
He lectured a lot, by invitation, at national scientifi c gatherings and
international congresses and symposia. He chaired sessions of the World
Association of Orthopaedic Surgeons and Traumatologists (SIKOT) and may
other congresses of national orthopaedic and trauma associations. His papers
were cited in Campbell’s leading orthopaedic textbook Operative Orthopaedics-
Surgical Techniques. Academician Bumbaširević was the head of several
scientifi c research projects fi nanced by the Government of the Republic of Serbia, the SANU and the city of Belgrade. He mentored 29 candidates for
doctoral and master’s degrees and was on the evaluation committee for the
defence of 59 masters theses and doctoral dissertations at the schools of
medicine in Belgrade, Novi Sad, Niš and Skopje, as well as at the Military
Medical Academy in Belgrade.
For a long time, he was a board member of the Serbian Archives of
Medicine, Acta Orthopaedica Iugoslavica, Acta Biologiae et Medicinae
Experimentalis. Since 1978, he was a member of the editorial board of the
periodical Revie de Chirurgie Оrthopédique et Réparatrice de L’appareil Moteur
(Masson Paris); an external editor of the periodical Beitrage zür Orthopaedie
und Traumatologie and Orthopedia y Traumatologia (Harkov), formerly a
prominent USSR journal but now Ukrainian, since 1993.
Bumbaširević organised many scientifi c gatherings and congresses. Th e
biggest was Th e East and West Combined Meeting, the world congress of
orthopaedic and trauma surgeons, held in Belgrade in 1988.
On the occasion of the celebrations of the 200th Anniversary of French
Revolution in 1989, he organized a meeting of Serbian and French orthopaedic
surgeons in Belgrade.
He was a member of three sections of the Serbian Medical Society
(SMS), the Yugoslav Association of Surgeons, the Yugoslav Association of
Orthopaedic and Trauma Surgeons, a full member of the Medical Academy of
the Serbian Medical Society, and a full and honorary member of orthopaedic
and trauma associations in several countries.
He was also a long-standing member of the Board of Directors of the
Society for Cultural Cooperation between France and Yugoslavia and, since
1993, an honorary member of its Presidency.
He received many honours from the SMS, schools of medicine in
Belgrade, Zagreb and Niš, a Silver and Gold Tree diploma from JUOT (the
Orthopaedic Trauma Association of Yugoslavia), various diplomas from the
JUOT, the Association of Medical Societies of Yugoslavia, the City of Belgrade,
SIKOT, University of Brno (Universitas Purkiniana), the Priorov Medal from
the USSR Central Orthopaedic and Trauma Institute, a medal and diploma
from the Medical Academy in Roma. He was also the recipient of the July 7th
Award, Order of Labour with Golden Wreath, Order of Merits for the People
with Silver Rays, the Knight of the Legion of Honour Medal, etc. He was a
member of the Crown Council since its foundation.
Professional and scientific contribution by academician Živojin
Bumbaširević presents a mixture of clinical and surgical practices and scientifi c
papers that resulted from many years of dedicated work. He was one of the fi rst
orthopaedic surgeons in the country who applied a serious scientifi c approach
to the treatment of synovial joint traumas, spinal cord injuries, haemophilic arthropathy, and bone tumours. Each of these areas benefi ted greatly from his
expertise. He was the fi rst national author whose tumour treatment technique
is quoted in Campbell’s Operative Orthopaedics, the “Bible” of orthopaedic
surgeons.
Prof. Bumbaširević understood the impact of trauma on synovial joints,
the consequences and treatment methods. In his paper from 1953, he gave a
detailed clinical and statistical work situation report at the Orthopaedic
Trauma Clinic for the period between 1947 and 1950. Th is was the fi rst time
that a systematic description of epidemiology and management of limb injuries
was provided in former Yugoslavia. For over 50 years and with a great
commitment, Bumbaširević studied trauma injuries, especially those sustained
in traffi c accidents, through clinical and scientifi c work, research projects and
scientifi c publications. In the early 1950s, he recognized the importance of
understanding road traffi c traumas and polytraumas from surgical as well as
psychological points of view, and the propensity to cause accidents, which was
labelled as such much later and the term accident prone persons introduced.
Bumbaširević noticed the problem of femoral neck fracture in the early
1950s when he published a study of 81 patients treated with compression
osteosynthesis, reporting only 4 fatalities – an impressive result even by today’s
standards. Th e work of prof. Bumbaširević, including his own observations
regarding the treatment of femoral neck fractures with hip (Austin Moore)
prosthesis and transtrochanteric fractures, was a pioneering undertaking. Prof.
Bumbaširević was one of the few authors who, in 1965, published papers on
injuries and fractures of amputees. He also described radiographic signs of
bone healing aft er injuries sustained by athletes, wrestlers and height jumpers,
the area not suffi ciently researched up until then, for which he won acclaim,
and still does nowadays, and whose results are acknowledged through work of
many of today’s orthopaedists.
Prof. Bumbaširević was particularly interested in spinal injuries.
Together with engineers from the Faculty of Electrical Engineering and the
Serbian Academy of Sciences and Arts, he demonstrated treatment of paralysed
patients with exoskeletons. Th e latest model of the exoskeleton (Phoenix)
weighs only 12 kilograms and has clinical applications, which proves that this
was not a utopian idea.
Prof. Bumbaširević was one of our first scientists to describe
hyperextension injuries of the spine while studying cases of his patients in
1964, at the time when there was very little knowledge of such conditions. In
1962, he described the successful operative treatment of unstable spinal
fractures, which represented a pioneering work in spinal surgery of that time.
He published the results of the treatment of, and prognosis for, 225 patients
with spinal cord injuries in his paper entitled Analysis of the neurological results in 225 cases of traumatic tetraplegia and paraplegia (Analyse des résultats
neurologiques chez 225 cas de paraplégie et tétraplégie traumatique) published
in the Revue de Chirurgie Orthopédique.
Another research area to which Prof. Bumbaširević contributed greatly
was haemophilic arthropathy. In 1961, he gave a precise description of the
clinical and radiological picture of haemophilia and haemophilic arthropathy.
However, bone tumours were the largest and perhaps the most important area
which prof. Bumbaširević researched throughout his career. It was an area of
special signifi cance at the time, bearing in mind that bone tumours are diffi cult
to diagnose and treat which is a challenge even today, in the era of modern
technologies. In the 1950s, it was a ground-breaking mission.
Th e greatest tribute to his understanding of bone tumour pathology is
the fact that he is quoted in the most important textbook for orthopaedic
surgeons Campbell’s Operative Orthopaedics (1990). In 1955 already, he
described a case of the chondrosarcoma of the scapula in the Serbian Archives
while in 1957 he produced the fi rst outline of the tumour registry in former
Yugoslavia, emphasizing the importance of a comprehensive overview of this
issue, and not simply observations regarding the treatment of only one isolated
case. He also explained the treatment of malignant tumours of the
humeroscapular areas and preservation of upper limb function following
radical removals of a tumour. Th is kind of approach to the preservation of
extremities in orthopaedic oncology was publicised 20 years after the
publication of the text Limb Salvage Procedures. In the treatment of osteoclasts,
surgeons applied radical resection – a modern form of treatment of tumours
– repairing bone defect by inserting a bone plug or by endoprosthetic
replacement while localising tumour in the proximity of the femur. Th ey
indicate that no clinical diagnosis can be made on the basis of clinical and
radiological images (a widely spread notion at the time), and stipulate that a
tumour biopsy is required prior to the treatment. A large study of 75 patients
at the Orthopaedic Trauma Clinic, during the period 1950–1955 and 1961–
1970, presented the achieved results and the guidelines for the treatment of
bone tumours.
Prof. Bumbaširević also described osteoid osteomas, benign types of a
tumour, and gave a detailed description of the tumour localisation, age and the
clinical picture of the patients, a precise radiological description by which this
entity is characterised. In an article published in 1968, six patients diagnosed
with eosinophilic granuloma were described, as well as diff erent localisations
of granuloma and pathohistological verifi cations of their clinical diagnosis.
Solitary xanthomatous tumours were also explicated. Tumour resection
treatment was described in the articles Diaphyseal Epiphyseal Resection in Bone
Tumours of the Knee, and in Résection en bloc et reconstruction dans le cas de la

surgery and arteriography in bone tumour diagnosis; novel diagnostic and
treatment methods in those days.
In 1958, Prof. Bumbaširević established a bone marrow bank for
compensation of bone defects, described fractures and changes in epileptic
patients, and the use of electromagnetic fi elds in the treatment of fractures and
stimulation of bone growth.

enrolled at the School of Medicine in Belgrade in 1938.
Tumours of the Knee, and in Résection en bloc et reconstruction dans le cas de la
tumeur des cellules géantes – grade II, in 1977. He also introduced computers and ultraviolet light in orthopaedic
surgery and arteriography in bone tumour diagnosis; novel diagnostic and
treatment methods in those days.
In 1958, Prof. Bumbaširević established a bone marrow bank for
compensation of bone defects, described fractures and changes in epileptic

AB - Simo Milošević was born on September 5th, 1896, in the small town
Kamenari in the Bay of Boka Kotorska (Boka) where he fi nished primary
school. He started Classical Gymnasium in Kotor but fi nished it in Zadar. He
trained at Zadar Th eological Seminary which was almost at the rank of
Th eological Faculty. In 1918 he enrolled at the Faculty of Philosophy, the
Department of Biology in Belgrade, but in 1920 he signed over to the newly
founded School of Medicine. During studies, he volunteered at the Dermatology
and Venereology Clinic where he started research into the origins of
dermatovenerologic diseases and their characteristics. He graduated (1926) as
the 12th student of his generation and started working as a secondary care
doctor, at the Chemotherapy Unit of the Bacteriological Department of the
Central Institute for Hygiene (CIH) in Belgrade. He won a Rockefeller grant
(1928) and started his specialist studies in Hamburg. He completed research in
Paris, at the Paris School of Medicine (1930), where he worked with renowned
professors of parasitology and mycology. Under Professor Vigren supervision
he completed a course on the production of glassware apparatus used in
medicine. At the Pasteur Institute in Paris, he completed courses in
microbiology and biochemistry and the applications of industrial fermentation.
Aft er returning to Belgrade he founded the Medical Mycological Laboratory
within the Department of Parasitology of the CIH (1930) and it was the fi rst
specialized laboratory in the Kingdom of Yugoslavia and the region.
Because of his “left ist” and anti-regime political activities, he was
arrested (1932) and sent to prison by the State Court. International scientifi c
circles, especially the scientists from Paris and Professor Langeron in particular,
objected his detention and he was released. Due to notable scientifi c research
results he got a second Rockefeller grant which enabled him to continue
scientifi c work at the Paris School of Medicine. Th ere he was elected“foreign
assistant extraordinaire” at the Department of Parasitology and Natural History
(1936) which was a prestigious title bestowed upon foreign researchers. During
long term scientifi c collaboration with Professor Langeron he produced his
most important scientifi c results. Additionally, he developed close and lasting
friendship with Professor Langeron who respected very much his work. Out of
this respect, Langeron named a newly discovered species of dermatophyte
Achorion (Trichophyton) milochevitchi.
On February 3rd, 1937, the School of Medicine, University of Belgrade,
appointed Simo Milošević to the position of an associate professor of
parasitology. At the time medical parasitology included multiple branches such
as helminthology, protozoology and arachno-entomology and phytoparasitology (namely medical mycology). Milošević was very dedicated
to teaching, not only of university students but also of secondary school ones
for whom he wrote several textbooks on hygiene, two for upper-class schools
and two for gymnasiums. He was an honorary president of the Yugoslav
Association of Medical Students who saw him not only as a teacher but also as
a guardian and a friend. Aft er the signing of the Tripartite Pact, Simo Milošević
gave a fi ery speech by the Vuk Monument on March 27th, 1941 and invited the
citizens of Belgrade to protest against the regime. He soon left Belgrade and
went to Boka where he set out to organize rebellions against the Italian
occupation forces. Together with Professor Niko Miljanić, he founded a
hospital in the town of Risan where resistance fi ghters and wounded partisan
were treated. In 1942, Milošević joined the Headquarters of Partisan units of
Montenegro and was put in charge of the health services. He soon set up a
partisan hospital near the town of Nikšić and became the Head of the Sanitary
Unit for Montenegro and Boka. In September of 1942, he retreated to Bosnia,
with the partisans. He organized the First Congress of the Partisan Physicians
in the town of Bosanski Petrovac at which he submitted a report on the
sanitary-epidemiological situation in the army and on the organization of the
civilian health services. At the First Session of AVNOJ in Bihać, he was elected
a member of the Executive Board and the organizer of the health service for the
people, for which he developed thorough instructions in the war conditions.
His eff orts in the organization of the health service of the Partisan units were
hampered by constant fi ghting, known as the fourth and the fi ft h enemy
off ensives. As a soldier of the 3rd Fighter Division, he was wounded in the Battle
of Sutjeska. He and Ivan Goran Kovačić (famous writer) reached the vicinity of
the town of Foča, in Bosnia, where they hid for a while. Th ey were soon found
and executed by the Chetniks, in June or July of 1943.
In general, Simo Milošević is better known as a partisan doctor than a
scientist. Unfortunately, even our medical professionals did not have, nor do
they still have, an accurate insight into the scientifi c achievements of Simo
Milošević. Th e fi rst analysis of his contributions to the medicine, primarily
medical mycology, was made by his student and successor in the department,
Professor Milovanović. A much more comprehensive analysis of his research
achievements was conducted by Grin and Ožegović (1958), and published as the
English edition by the Springer Publishing Company. In the edition History of
Medical Mycology Luciano Polonelli stated that the Еpidermophyton fl occosum
type of dermatophyte fungus was described and classifi ed by Langeron and
Milošević (1930). Th e scientifi c achievement of Simo Milošević is still not
recognized nor appreciated enough. Th us, the biological classifi cation of
dermatophyte, published by Langeron and Milošević (1930) is attributed to the
American scientist Chester Emmons who came up with it few years later (1937). During the 17 years of scientifi c activities Simo Milošević primarily
studied human infectious diseases and agents. He initially started with bacteria,
and his experimental work proved that diff erent variations of bacteria can be
obtained by using the fi ltration of bacterial or fungal cultures, He analyzed
causative agent of tuberculosis and concluded that their genetic changes are
possible reasons for epidemic outbreaks. Moreover, he demonstrated that
fi ltrate from culture of fungus Aspergillus decrease acid resistance of this
bacteria. In medical mycology fi eld Milošević examined immunological
mechanisms important for the treatment of patients with dermatophytosis, the
eff ect of environmental factors on fungal growth, fungicidal properties of
certain compounds, and the appearance of pleomorphisms in the
dermatophytes. He introduced new sampling methods for the laboratory study
of dermatophytes and developed new simple procedures for laboratory
examinations of clinical samples. Milošević also worked on the public health
aspects of infectious diseases, the issues of hygiene, epidemiology and
prevention of infection. He upgraded the guidelines of the health service
organization, and promoted the importance of education of physicians and the
population. His papers stood up with clarity and accuracy of theoretical
hypothesis, and his practical guidelines provided easy solutions for laboratory
work. He applied various methods of research; observation, case series analysis,
cohort studies and laboratory experimental studies, but the most signifi cant
results came from laboratory based investigations. Th e key results were
observed in a series of properly selected and clearly systematized clinical cases
of dermatomycosis by analyzing a large number of patients in former
Yugoslavia. He collected a lot of clinically signifi cant fungi, and through
experimental work he established laboratory criteria for the classifi cation of
dermatophytes and their simple and precise taxonomy which was until then
based only on clinical aspects. Th ese accomplishments were achieved in
collaboration with great scientists such as Sabouraud, Ot, Matruchot,
Dassonville, Harz, Brumpt, and Langeron, His most prominent contribution to
the medical mycology was determination of criteria for classifi cation of
dermatophytes which enabled the appropriate classification of several
important species: Epidermophyton floccosum (Hаrz) (Langeron еt
Milochevitch 1934), Тrichophyton schoenleinii (Lebert) (Langeron et
Milochevitch 1930), and Trichophyton ferrugineum (Ota) (Langeron et
Milochevitch 1930). Besides classifying already discovered species he identifi ed
completely new dermatophyte in his patients: Тrichophyton langeronii (1931),
Тrichophyton bossae (1935) and Тrichophyton immergens (1937). He published
research results (1928–1940) simultaneously in French scientifi c journals
Annales de Parasitologie Humaine et Comparee and Mycopatologia and in
Serbian medical journals Medicinski pregled (Medical Review) and Glasnik Centralnog higijenskog zavoda (Th e Gazette of the Central Institute for Hygiene).
Majority of these publications (circa 50) related to the medical mycology,
mostly to the laboratory criteria for dermatophyte systematization, and have
been cited in numerous international and national journals and books. How
signifi cant is his contribution to the medicine, primarily to the medical
mycology is the fact that the group of dermatophytes which Milošević reclassifi
ed and identifi ed in 1930 have been recently confi rmed by molecular
classifi cation.

How
signifi cant is his contribution to the medicine, primarily to the medical
mycology is the fact that the group of dermatophytes which Milošević reclassifi
ed and identifi ed in 1930 have been recently confi rmed by molecular
classifi cation.",

AB - Jovan Danić (1854−1924) completed his primary school and the fi rst
year of secondary education in Kragujevac and the remaining fi ve years of
secondary education he completed in Belgrade in 1869. He then enroled at the
Law School of the Higher School in Belgrade. In 1870, he enroled at Medical
School, completing 7 semesters where he was taught neuropsychiatry by
psychiatrist professor Gudden, who impressed Danić so much that he later
decided to study psychiatry. In 1874 attended Medical School in Vitzburg,
Germany where he completed medical studies defending his doctoral
dissertation Ueber die Praecordialangst bei Geisteskranken. Th en he spent 8
months at the Paris School of Medicine, mostly at the clinic of the famous
professor Charcot. In June 1975, he returned to Switzerland and did a 2-month
internship at Kreuzspital hospital in Chur, in Switzerland. He returned to
Belgrade in September 1875, successfully passed the state exam and opened his
private medical practice. With the First Serbo-Turkish war soon breaking out,
was sent to a garrison in Zaječar where he was the head of the fi eld hospital.
In 1885, Jovan Danić was elected an honorary member of the Royal
Medical Academy in Rome. Sometime later he also became an honorary
member of the Association of Doctors in Croatia, Slavonia and Međumurje,
delivering impressive lectures at their sessions.
He was Serbian representative at several international congresses; the
International Veterinary Congress in Brussels in 1883, the International
Sanitary Conference on Cholera in Rome in 1885, the International Congress
on Alcoholism in Budapest in 1905. In 1907, he represented the Serbian
Medical Society at the Congress of Czech Doctors and Naturalists in Prague.
Comander in chief General Chernyayev awarded him a silver medal of
bravery. For almost the entire year of 1878, he served as a physician with the
5th battalion near Kuršumlija during which time he translated the 3-volume
book System of Hygiene by professor Eduard Reich. Towards the end of 1878,
he was briefl y the Head of the Internal Department of the Military Hospital in
Belgrade, but in 1879 he resumed his private practice until November 1st, 1880
when he went back to the military service working as an offi cer in the Sanitary
Department of the Army Ministry. In June 1881, Danić was appointed as a
secondary care physician at the Mental Health Hospital as well as an Honorary
Secretary of the Civil Sanitary Department, headed by Dr. Vladan Đorđević
whom he assisted in the implementation of the adopted sanitary laws and
regulations, and the editing of the popular offi cial monthly journal on the
subject of hygiene – Public Health. When, in 1884, Dr. Vladan Đorđević was
elected President of the Belgrade Municipality, Danić took over from him the complete editing job of the journal in which he published several popular
articles aimed at raising health awareness. At the Serbo-Bulgarian War he
served as a doctor of the 1st regiment, demonstrating extraordinary dedication.
In December 1885 he started working as a secondary care physician at the
Mental Health Hospital. From June 12th, 1886 until November 1889 he was
appointed director the Hospital. Th en he was appointed as a supervisory
physician for Ćuprija county until May 8th, 1892 when, he was re-appointed as
the consulting physician of the First Unit of the Mental Health Hospital and
was re-appointed as its Director on August 22, 1894, heading it until he retired
in 1911. During the First World War, Dr. Danić performed a diffi cult duty of
the Director of the Reserve Military Hospital in Aleksinac, where thousands of
wounded and sick people were receiving treatment. By the end of 1915, he was
taken into Austrian custody and escorted to Belgrade where he served as the
Director of the State General Hospita. Being accused of shielding wounded
rebelions he was sent to concentration camp in Hungary for several months.
Aft er returning to Belgrade, he lived on miserly salaries and loans.
Aft er the war, he worked as the editor of the Serbian Archives of Medicine,
was involved in curbing alcoholism, helped medical doctors to fi nally set up
their Chamber and became ist fi rst, unanimously elected, president. He lived
modestly, he died in the house in which he was born. He was buried on October
27th, in the family grave at the New Cemetery, in the presence of a large
number of his colleagues and citizens of Belgrade.
Dr. Jovan Danić worked longest as the secondary care physician and
director of the Mental Health Hospital trying to improve treatment of these
patients appealing for a new, modern hospital to be built. He regularly
submitted Reports about the working of the Hospital, printed in the Serbian
Archives of Medicine and served as a source for analysts studying the treatment
of psychiatric illnesses in Serbia at the time. As a member, and later as the
President of the Main Sanitary Council, he was involved in the assessment of
the mental state of crime perpetrators and thus set the foundations of forensic
psychiatry in our country.
He became member of the Serbian Medical Society (SMS) in 1875, and
was one of its most esteemed and deserving members, and also the President
for 10 years. When the Court of Honour of the Society was founded in 1905,
he was elected its President and kept the offi ce for the rest of his life. As a sign
of gratitude, on November 30th, 1907 the SMS organized a special gala event
to mark the 30 years of medical services and literary activities of Dr. Jovan
Danić and issued a special edition of Doctor’s Beacon. Aft er 10 years in offi ce as
SMS President, Danić became its honorary lifetime president. When the
Medical Chamber was founded in 1924, Dr. Danić was elected its fi rst President
by acclamation. Dr. Jovan Danić was elected a regular member of the Main Sanitary
Council in 1882 becoming its President 1896 until his death in 1924.
Between 1896 and 1914, he also edited the publication Public Health.
Doctor’s Advice to the People which was appeared in twelve volumes annually,
on 25 pages on average (total of 1.632 pages over 19 years). Th e journal had
eight regular columns. By editing this journal and publishing numerous
articles, translations and edited translations from several languages by foreign
authors, Danić made remarkable contribution to the development of public
health awareness. Th e journal was one of rare sources which, for years, spread
hygiene advice amongst the people. From 1896 until the last but one volume of
this journal from the year1924, Danić also edited the Serbian Archives of
Medicine, the main journal of the Serbian Medical Society which, in its 12
annual volumes. Since he took over editing of the Archives, and until he died in
1924, Danić worked on 24 of its volumes, on 11.768 pages in total. Th is time
consuming job, done successfully over 25 years, was possible because Danić
was very well acquainted with the medical profession and science and because
he was naturally organized, kind, tactful, friendly, without any personal
interests. He and Dr. D. G. Popović jointly published Health Bulletin. Calendar
for the People between 1903 and 1913, and in 1921, which provided information
and advice to the people.
Dr. Jovan Danić was a prominent public fi gure. As a member of the
opposition old Progressive Party, he was elected a council member of the
Belgrade Municipality on three occasions. Between 1901 and 1903 he was an
MP in the National Assembly. In 1903 and 1904, Danić was Chairman of the
Organizing Committee of the First Congress of Serbian Doctors and Naturalists,
held in Belgrade between 5−8 September, 1904 attended by 433 doctors and
naturalists from Serbia and abroad.
As a physician and a social worker, seeing the catastrophic consequences
of alcohol abuse on the people and the state, Danić headed a committee
founded by the Society Against the Consumption of Alcoholic Beverages in which
he was unanimously elected its President and where he advocated total
abstinence. Danić was well known amongst anti-alcohol activists abroad and
was a member of a standing committee which organized international antialcohol
congresses representing Serbia. In 1912 the antialcoholic movement
had about 8.000 members across 80 organizations. In April, 1912 he organised
the First Congress of the Youth Abstinence Organization. Aft er the First world
war, the Temperance Movement was restored, spreading amongst young people,
and all temperance movements were gathered into the Yugoslav Temperance
Society which elected Dr. Jovan Danić as its honorary president.
Danić was the recipient of the Medal of Valour for the courage
demonstrated in the First Serbo-Turkish War, awards for participation in all three wars which Serbia had led, the Order of the Cross of Takovo 3rd class, the
Order of the White Eagle 5th class, and the Medal of Valour for the courage
exhibited in the Balkan Wars. For his outstanding achievements in curbing
alcoholism, in 1923 he was awarded the Order of St Sava with ribbon.
His contributions and achievements are numerous. Th e exact number of
his publications is not known. Usually some 200 pieces of various publications
are mentioned but complete list of his publications is impossible to compile as
he most likely did not sign all of his articles.
As a physician and the director of the Mental Health Hospital in
Belgrade, Danić improved the methods of treatment of psychiatric patients to
the greatest extent, wrote a number of very valuable pieces on psychiatry and
also translated several from foreign languages. As a member and the longest
serving President of the Main Sanitary Council, Danić was the best analyst of
most psychiatric cases foundating forensic psychiatry in Serbia. His editorial
work on the Serbian Archives of Medicine enabled preservation of almost
everything that Serbian doctors achieved professionally between 1896 and
1925. Even if he had not done anything else for our medical profession, such
an excellent long-term editorial job on this periodical would have been more
than enough to place Dr. Jovan Danić in the exclusive circle of the greatest
medical professionals of Serbia. His editorial work on the journals Public
Health and Public Health. Doctor’s Advice to the People, greatly boosted public
health awareness amongst the people.
