AB - The chapter represents the first thorough description of „Vorba noastră” („Our word”), published in Zaječar between 1945 and 1949, which was the first newspaper written in the Romanian variety spoken in Eastern Serbia and printed in the Cyrillic alphabet. The analysis of the 40 issues allowed us to observe the competition between the two ethnonyms, "rumân" and "vlah", and the process of replacing the former term with the latter. At the same time, the micro-level language planning that takes place in the texts published in „Vorba noastră” suggests that the newspaper can be seen as an example of incipient, circumstantial standardization of the variety of Romanian spoken in Eastern Serbia.

Standardizing Vlach Romanian in Eastern Serbia: A Remissive Issue

AB - This chapter analyzes the recent standardization of Vlach Romanian in Eastern Serbia, comparing it with the incipient standard creation of the same variety in the mid-20th century. In the beginning, the authors present the political context of the region in the interwar period. This is instrumental in understanding the first attempt to standardize Vlach Romanian, shortly after World War II, triggered by a change in the status of the speakers of Vlach Romanian. Even if there is no claimed continuity to the post-WWII attempt at standardizing the vernacular, the authors show that the recent codification of Vlach Romanian, in the early 21st century, is not a new issue but, in Victor Friedman’s words, a remissive issue. They analyze the language planning phases and focus on the social actors involved in the process, who conceive standardizing the variety as a means of giving it legitimacy as a fully developed language, on the one hand, and as a language different from Romanian, on the other hand. Finally, a few observations on the current use of Vlach Romanian and the anti-standardizing movement are made.

The Vlachs of Eastern Serbia: Language and Society

AB - Published as a volume within the VLACH (Vanishing Languages and Cultural Heritage) series, this book represents the first in-depth sociolinguistic analysis of the Vlach community living in Eastern Serbia and of the language spoken by this community, Vlach Romanian. By integrating advances in the fields of language ideology, the online use of minority languages, linguistic landscape
research, and language policy and planning, the book offers the reader a multi-faceted image of the state, status, and use of the language spoken by the Vlachs of Eastern Serbia, as well as of the ideologies accompanying it. Based on extensive fieldwork, detailed coverage of the texts written about and by the community, and relevant analysis of social media sites, this book generates insights on how the language shapes identity, influences ideology, sparks conflict,
and impacts the linguistic landscape.
This book is being released at a turning point in the history of the community: the revitalization measures and ongoing standardization process is dividing the ideologically divided Vlach society even more. In the coming years, it remains to be seen whether these changes will be able to challenge the stereotypes regarding the language and its speakers that still persist and whether these changes will bring about the greater use and visibility of Vlach Romanian. Due to the multiple aspects covered, the book will be of interest to sociolinguists and ethnologists working on Romance varieties and minorities in Serbia and more generally in the Balkans, but also to the members of the Vlach community.

Ideology and representation of Vlach Romanian online. Between linguistic activism and unengaged language use

AB - This paper offers a brief review of the main online outlets for the variety of Romanian spoken in Eastern Serbia (Vlach Romanian), exploring the possible functions the internet plays for minority language communities in general and focusing on its role in the formation of active communities of collaborative minority language producers. We will first briefly introduce the Vlach community and their language, Vlach Romanian, and examine how it is used online by the main actors involved in the debate regarding the origin and status of their language (which we call the independentists and the reintegrationists), but also by non-engaged members of the Vlach community, who promote the active use online of this mostly oral variety. The main online initiatives we present are Paun Durlić’s website, the website of Matka Vlahilor association and the Vlasi na kvadrat Facebook page. We contend that the internet activity, both of the language activists and of the unengaged members of the community, mirrors their offline, real-world ideologies, but, at the same time, challenges the ideologies of contempt generally surrounding minority languages.

AB - This paper addresses the pluricentricity of Romanian, focusing on the two non-dominant varieties spoken in Serbia, Vojvodina Romanian and Vlach Romanian. We will discuss the development and current situation of the two varieties and will examine the differences between them regarding their historical and sociolinguistic context, official status in Serbia, self-identification of the speakers and identification of the outgroup, attitudes towards and linguistic distance from Romania Romanian. We will also discuss the differences in what concerns norm creation and codification: while Vojvodina Romanian is characterized by a low degree of autonomy towards the dominant variety and a general exonormative attitude, Vlach Romanian has started to codify its own proper norms and is undergoing a process of endonormative standardization.

abstract = "In this article we examine, from a predominantly sociolinguistic perspective, the writing systems created throughout time for the graphic rendering of the variety of Romanian spoken by the Vlachs of Eastern Serbia. We especially investigate what influences the choice of a script (Latin or Cyrillic), of orthographic conventions and of a writing system, and how this choice correlates with the ideological attitude (reintegrationist or independentist) of the proponents.",

AB - The paper analyses the Vlach graveyards of Eastern Serbia, from two main perspectives. On the one hand, it focuses on the non-linguistic elements, which point to the fact that Vlachs are buried there; therefore, the authors propose three possible types of "reading" the graveyards: ethnographic, esthetic and cultural. On the other hand, the authors make a diachronic analysis, from a sociolinguistic perspective, of the epitaphs written in the local Vlach variety.

AB - In this paper we discuss the linguistic landscape of the graveyards of Eastern Serbia, with a special focus on a very recent phenomenon: the appearance of epitaphs in Vlach, a minority language whose codification and standardization have been developing at a fast pace in recent years. The creation of an official script for the Vlach language, the publication of various translations in Vlach, as well as the decision of standardization of Vlach (September 2015) testify to the fact that members of this community have started to openly express their ethnic and linguistic identity. Therefore, the appearance of epitaphs and other public signs in Vlach can
be seen both as the result of these measures or of the general linguistic and sociolinguistic climate, and as a possible trigger of change. The linguistic landscape reflects the relative strength and status of various languages in a specific sociolinguistic and multilingual context, but at the same time contributes to building the sociolinguistic context, influencing the way people perceive the status of different languages.
