Preparation and characterization of poly(Urethane-siloxane)/titanium-dioxide nanocomposites

AB  - This work is focused on preparation of poly(urethane-siloxane)/titanium-dioxide nanocomposites (PUSNs) with enhanced features. PUSNs were prepared by the in situ polymerization reaction using titanium-dioxide as a nano-filler in different amounts (1, 2, 3 and 5 wt.%) with respect to the poly(urethane-siloxane) (PUS) matrix. PUS copolymer was based on α,ω-dihy-droxy-ethoxypropyl-poly(dimethylsiloxane), 4,4’-methylenediphenyldiisocyanate and 1,4-bu-tanediole. In order to investigate the influence of TiO 2 content on the structure, UV resistance, thermal properties, hydrophobicity and morphology of the prepared PUSNs, FTIR spectroscopy, UV-Vis diffuse-reflectance spectroscopy, differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), contact angle measurements, surface free energy (SFE) analysis, water absorption, scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and atomic force microscopy (AFM) were performed. The PUSNs showed excellent UV resistance, high hydrophobicity, low surface free energy and also higher thermal stability and rougher surface and cross-section relief structure as compared to the pure PUS copolymer. Based on the obtained results it can be concluded that prepared PUSNs could be potentially used as protective coatings. © 2019, Association of Chemists and Chemical Engineers of Serbia. AB  - Low targeting efficiency and fast metabolism of antineoplastic drugs are hindrances to effective chemotherapies and there is an ongoing search for better drugs, but also better carriers. Steroid derivatives, 3β-hydroxy-16-hydroxymino-androst-5-en-17-one (A) and 3β,17β-dihydroxy-16-hydroxymino-androst-5-ene (B) as cancer growth inhibitors were chemically synthesized and captured in a carrier composed of hydroxyapatite (HAp) nanoparticles coated with chitosan oligosaccharide lactate (ChOLS). The only difference between the two derivatives is that A has a carbonyl group at the C17 position of the five-membered ring and B has a hydroxyl. This small difference in the structure resulted not only in different physicochemical properties of the A- and B-loaded HAp/ChOSL, but also in different biological activities. The morphology of drug-loaded HAp/ChOSL particles was spherical, but the size depended on the drug identity: d50 = 138 nm for A-loaded HAp/ChOSL and d50 = 223 nm for B-loaded HAp/ChOSL. Cell-selective toxicity was tested against human breast carcinoma (MCF7 and MDA-MB-231), human lung carcinoma (A549) and human lung fibroblasts (MRC-5). The small selectivity of pure derivatives A and B toward breast cancer cells became drastically increased when they were delivered using HAp/ChOSL particles. Whereas the ratio of the cytotoxicity imposed onto breast cancer cells and the cytotoxicity imposed onto healthy MRC-5 fibroblasts ranged from 1.5 to 1.7 for pure A and from 1.5 to 2.3 for pure derivative B depending on the concentration, it increased to 5.4 for A-loaded HAp/ChOSL and 5.1 for B-loaded HAp/ChOSL. FACS analysis demonstrated poor uptake of HAp/ChOSL particles by MCF7 cells, suggesting that the drug release occurs extracellularly. The augmented activity of the drugs was most likely due to sustained release, although the favorable positive charge of the carrier, allowing it to adhere to the negatively charged plasma membrane and release the drugs steadily and directly to the hydrophobic cell membrane milieu, was delineated as a possible complementary mechanism.

Two step sintering of ZnTiO3 nanopowder

AB  - Metastable nanopowder ZnTiO3 was pressed into cylindrical compacts at 200 MPa. Compacts were treated by conventional heating with isothermal holding at 931°C for 10 minutes, 25 minutes and 40 minutes. ZnTiO3 compacts were also heated with a two-step sintering schedule with maximal 913°C and isothermal holding at 896°C, for approximately the same holding times as the isothermal schedule. Shrinkage during heating was monitored with a dilatometric device, while microstructure was determined with atomic force microscopy. XRD patterns were collected for the most interesting samples. Microstructures of sintered specimens showed differences introduced during the last sintering stage by the two different heating schedules. Goal of the presented work was to discuss the possible sintering mechanisms for the two step sintering schedulle according to the presented results

AB  - In an earlier study we demonstrated that hydroxyapatite nanoparticles coated with chitosan-poly(d,l)-lactide-co-glycolide (HAp/Ch-PLGA) target lungs following their intravenous injection into mice. In this study we utilize an emulsification process and freeze drying to load the composite HAp/Ch-PLGA particles with 17β-hydroxy-17α-picolyl-androst-5-en-3β-yl-acetate (A), a chemotherapeutic derivative of androstane and a novel compound with a selective anticancer activity against lung cancer cells. 1H NMR and 13C NMR techniques confirmed the intact structure of the derivative A following its entrapment within HAp/Ch-PLGA particles. The thermogravimetric and differential thermal analyses coupled with mass spectrometry were used to assess the thermal degradation products and properties of A-loaded HAp/Ch-PLGA. The loading efficiency, as indicated by the comparison of enthalpies of phase transitions in pure A and A-loaded HAp/Ch-PLGA, equaled 7.47 wt.%. The release of A from HAp/Ch-PLGA was sustained, neither exhibiting a burst release nor plateauing after three weeks. Atomic force microscopy and particle size distribution analyses were used to confirm that the particles were spherical with a uniform size distribution of d50 = 168 nm. In vitro cytotoxicity testing of A-loaded HAp/Ch-PLGA using MTT and trypan blue dye exclusion assays demonstrated that the particles were cytotoxic to the A549 human lung carcinoma cell line (46 ± 2%), while simultaneously preserving high viability (83 ± 3%) of regular MRC5 human lung fibroblasts and causing no harm to primary mouse lung fibroblasts. In conclusion, composite A-loaded HAp/Ch-PLGA particles could be seen as promising drug delivery platforms for selective cancer therapies, targeting malignant cells for destruction, while having a significantly lesser cytotoxic effect on the healthy cells.

AB  - The applicative potential of synthetic calcium phosphates, especially hydroxyapatite (HAp), has become intensely broadened in the past 10 years, from bone tissue engineering to multiple other fields of biomedicine. Previously we have shown that hydroxyapatite nanoparticles coated with chitosan-poly(D,L)-lactide-co-glycolide (HAp/Ch-PLGA) target lungs following their intravenous administration into mice. For this purpose radioactive 125-Iodine (125I), a low energy gamma emitter, was used to develop a novel in situ method for radiolabeling of particles and investigation of their biodistribution. In this study we utilize an emulsification process and freeze drying to load the composite particles based on hydroxyapatite nanocarrier, chitosane and poly(lactic-co-glycolic acid) with 17β- hydroxy-17α-picolyl-androst-5-en-3β-acetate (A), a chemotherapeutic derivative of androstane. The picolyl androstane derivatives showed high potency in the cell inhibitors of hormonedependent cancers (adenocarcinoma, prostate cancer, cervix carcinoma, colon cancer, etc.). 1H NMR, 13C NMR and high-resolution time-of-flight mass spectrometry (MS) techniques confirmed the intact structure of the derivative A following its entrapment within HAp/Ch-PLGA particles. The synthesized particles of A-loaded HAp/Ch-PLGA were found to be spherical in shape with a uniform size distribution of d50=168 nm. The release of A from HAp/Ch-PLGA was sustained, with no burst release or plateauing after three weeks. The obtained results of the DET and MTT tests show that the particles of A-loaded HAp/Ch-PLGA exhibit almost three times higher cytotoxicity towards lung adenocarcinoma cells (A549) than towards healthy cells (MRC5), while at the same time allowing twice as fast recovery of healthy cells. We have also analyzed the period of recovery of healthy, as well as cancer cells, following the treatment with A-loaded HAp/Ch-PLGA. After treatment with A-loaded HAp/Ch-PLGA, healthy cells recover twice as fast as the malignant ones. Immunofluorescent staining of primary fibroblasts interacting with HAp/Ch-PLGA and A-HAp/Ch-PLGA particles demonstrates no negative morphological or proliferative effects on cells.

AB  - A novel method combining a traditional immersion precipitation process for making membranes with photopolymerization and crosslinking of functional monomers included in the casting solution was used to prepare asymmetric polyethersulfone membranes with submicron particles incorporating glycidyl methacrylate copolymer. In order to introduce sulfonic groups epoxide rings of glycidyl methacrylate were opened using two methods. The first method was functionalization with sodium sulfite, and the second method was functionalization with sulfuric acid and then grafting with 2-acrylamido-2-methylpropane sulfonic acid. Obtained membranes were characterized using infrared spectroscopy, conductometric titration and water permeability measurements. Scanning electron microscopy and atomic force microscopy were used to investigate the surface morphology and topology of membrane. Dynamic adsorption of Rhodamine B as a model dye was used to demonstrate suitability of these novel membranes for membrane adsorption since the adsorption capacity for dye cations was much better for both functionalized membrane with sodium sulfite and grafted membrane with 2-acrylamido-2-methylpropane sulfonic acid compared to the nonfunctionalized membrane.

abstract = "A novel method combining a traditional immersion precipitation process for making membranes with photopolymerization and crosslinking of functional monomers included in the casting solution was used to prepare asymmetric polyethersulfone membranes with submicron particles incorporating glycidyl methacrylate copolymer. In order to introduce sulfonic groups epoxide rings of glycidyl methacrylate were opened using two methods. The first method was functionalization with sodium sulfite, and the second method was functionalization with sulfuric acid and then grafting with 2-acrylamido-2-methylpropane sulfonic acid. Obtained membranes were characterized using infrared spectroscopy, conductometric titration and water permeability measurements. Scanning electron microscopy and atomic force microscopy were used to investigate the surface morphology and topology of membrane. Dynamic adsorption of Rhodamine B as a model dye was used to demonstrate suitability of these novel membranes for membrane adsorption since the adsorption capacity for dye cations was much better for both functionalized membrane with sodium sulfite and grafted membrane with 2-acrylamido-2-methylpropane sulfonic acid compared to the nonfunctionalized membrane.",

AB  - Properties of sintered NdFeB magnets strongly depend on granulation and size distribution of constituent particles, which requires an efficient method for their separation into relatively narrow size fractions. We investigated two methods of magnetic particle separation from a mixture with different sizes using simulation by finite element method: magnetophoresis and gravity settling. In the case of magnetophoresis magnetic particles ranging in diameter from 1 to 10 m were deflected from the direction of continuous laminar flow by a perpendicular magnetic field. Larger particles were deflected from the direction of laminar flow more than smaller particles. The applied flow rate and strength and gradient of the applied magnetic field were the key parameters in controlling the deflection. The gravity settling model simulated spherical particles falling in heptane. Particles of various sizes were divided according to the time they needed to reach the bottom. The model used an axially symmetric fluid-flow simulation in a moving coordinate system connected with the particle, coupled with an ordinary differential equation for the force balance of the particle (gravity and drag force). The grain accelerated from standstill and rapidly reached its terminal velocity. This velocity was approximately proportional to the square of the particle radius, which led to clear separation of 5-10 um particles from those with a diameter of 1 um.

AB  - Improved permanent magnets are essential for emergent applications in electronic and electric devices. Different attempts have been made to produce nanoscale anisotropic rare-earth magnetic powder based on Nd-Fe-B material. Recently, high energy surfactant assisted ball milling has been proven to be an effective technique to produce anisotropic hard magnetic Nd-Fe-B nanoparticles. In this paper we are presenting our experimental results on high energy ball milling in planetary mill "Puverisette 7 premium line" from "Fritsch". Except milling material, there are several variables which influence the milling process for the selected mill type. They are: mechanical properties of the milling media material (bowls, balls, etc.), ball-to-powder ratio (BPR), extent of filling of the milling bowl, milling atmosphere, milling speed and duration, and type of solution and surfactant for wet milling. We are going to give influence of all these parameters on obtained NdFeB magnetic materials with nanosized dimensions starting from Nd2Fe14B HDD (Hydrogenated Disproportionated Desorbed) material.

Same compacts were heated with two-step sintering schedule with maximal 912oC and isothermal holding at 896oC, for approximately the same holding times as with isothermal. Shrinkage during heating was monitored with dilatometric device, while microstructure was determined with atomic force microscopy. XRD patterns were collected for the most prominent samples. Sintered specimens microstructure showed differences introduced during last sintering stage by two heating schedules.

Permeation of toluidine blue solutions through non-functionalized membranes showed a dramatic effect of 2-acrylamido-2-methylpropane sulfonic acid concentration in the casting solution on the dynamic adsorption performance. The epoxide groups present in glycidyl methacrylate copolymer were transformed into amine functionalities by ring opening under alkaline conditions. Permeation of dilute Cu2+ solutions through functionalized membranes demonstrated that the plate height for some of these membranes was an order of magnitude smaller than for commercial particle-filled membranes used in solid phase extraction.

AB  - ZnTiO3 nanopowder as a constitutive component in compact production was primarily characterized. Scanning electron micrographs of as received powder were recorded. Mercury porosimetry and nitrogen adsorption were also performed on loose powder. Particle size distribution in a water powder suspension was determined with a laser particle size analyser. Compaction was performed on different pressures in a range from 100 to 400 MPa using the uniaxial double sided compaction technique without binder and lubricant. Micrographs of compacted specimens were obtained using scanning electron microscopy and atomic force microscopy. Pore size distribution was also determined by mercury porosimetry and nitrogen adsorption. Results revealed that with increasing pressure during compaction interagglomerate pores diminish in size until they reach some critical diameter related to the intra-agglomerate pore size.

AB  - Membrane adsorption has started to replace fixed bed chromatography for separation and purification of small quantities of valuable species in biotechnology and related areas. Membrane functionalization is usually required to introduce affinity groups for these applications. In this work novel membranes adsorbers were prepared by combining liquid phase inversion with photopolymerization of the solution comprising polyethersulfone, glycidyl methacrylate, sodium salt of 2-acrylamido-2-methylpropane sulfonic acid and a cross-linker. Membranes were characterized using SEM, AFM, FTIR, titration and water permeability measurements. Dynamic adsorption of Toluidine blue as a model dye was used to demonstrate suitability of these novel membranes for membrane adsorption.

AB  - Far infrared reflection spectra of NiO polycrystals sintered at 1100 °C for various times (30–240 min) were measured at room temperature using a FTIR Spectrometer—Brucker 113V. The measured spectra depended on the sintering time due to differences in the microstructural morphology of the material and were compared with the NiO single crystal reflectivity diagram. Numerical analyses of the experimental spectra were performed using Kramers-Kronig analysis, a four-parameter model of coupled oscillators and the effective medium modeling theory. In the three-component effective medium model based on Bruggeman's theory we assumed the presence of pores, intergranular material and crystalline grains. The intergranular material and crystalline grains were defined as single and coupled ionic oscillators.

AB  - Nanoparticles have several advantages over the microparticles in interactions of the
biomaterial with the organism. The response of the organism depends on the interaction of the
biomaterial with the surrounding tissue and its adhesion to cells. Besides composition and
morphology, the size and size distribution of the composite particles plays a key role in these
phenomena.
This paper shows possibilities of synthesizing composite biomaterials calcium
phosphate/poly-(dl-lactide-co-glycolide) (CP/DLPLG) formed as nanoparticles (NPs) powders.
Each CP nanoparticle was coated with amorphous DLPLG polymer. In dispersion, particles can
be deagglomerated by ultrasound treatment.
The size distribution of calcium phosphate coated with poly-(dl-lactide-co-glycolide)
(CP/DLPLG) was obtained by dynamic light scattering (DLS). Agglomerate of CP/DLPLG was
investigated by atomic force microscopy (AFM) before and after ultrasound treatment.

AB  - Thermal diffusivity and electric transport properties of fourteen years old superconducting YBa2Cu3O7-x pellets were obtained using the photoacoustic transmission technique and then compared with freshly made superconducting samples. The theoretical model for photoacoustic (PA) detection configuration is given. The measured amplitude and phase PA signals, as a function of the modulation frequency, were numerically analyzed. The thermal diffusivity, the coefficient of the carrier diffusion, optical absorption coefficient and the excess carrier lifetime were calculated. The thermal diffusivity of freshly produced samples decreased, after ageing, from about 1.3·10-6 to about 6.1·10-7 m2/s.

AB  - A method of investigation of semiconductors and metal–semiconductor structures based on two techniques: The elastic bending technique and pyropiezoelectric (PPE) technique was presented. The method was demonstrated on a metal–semiconductor–metal (MSM) structure, which is attached to a PPE detector. Two different ac voltages can be measured: One on the electrodes of MSM structure—the ac-photovoltage, and another on the electrodes of the PPE detector—the PPE voltage. The ac photovoltage is a consequence of the photogenerated plasma processes in the sample (MSM structure). Photogenerated plasma waves in a semiconductor are followed by the thermal and elastic waves (the elastic bending). Then, the pyroelectric voltage is a consequence of the thermal processes and the piezoelectric voltage is a consequence of elastic bending in the sample-PPE detector system. A theoretical model for a metal–semiconductor–metal-pyro(piezo)electric system is given including the space-charge regions and electronic states on the semiconductor surfaces, thermodiffusion, thermoelastic, and electronic deformation effects in a semiconductor. The photoelectric and pyropiezoelectric effects are investigated by analyzing the ac voltages as a function of the modulation frequency of excitation beam.

AB  - The possibility of characterization of aluminium powders using a horizontal coherer has been considered. Al powders of known dimension were treated with a high frequency electromagnetic field or with a DC electric field, which were increased until a dielectric breakdown occurred. Using a multifunctional card PC-428 Electronic Design and a suitable interface between the coherer and PC, the activation time of the coherer was measured as a function of powder dimension and the distance between the coherer electrodes. It was also shown that the average dimension of powders of unknown size could be determined using the coherer.

AB  - Far infrared reflection spectra, at room and liquid nitrogen temperature, of PbTe single crystals doped with iron are presented. Plasma minima were observed at about 160 cm–1 and 180 cm–1 for room and liquid nitrogen temperature, respectively. Using the reflectivity diagrams and their minima the values of the hole concentrations and their mobility at both temperatures were calculated and compared with galvanomagnetic measurements. All these results indicated that when PbTe is doped with a small concentration of Fe, the hole concentration is reduced by one order of magnitude and the free carrier mobility is larger when compared to pure PbTe.

AB  - The metal-semiconductor (MS) junction is investigated by new method based on two techniques: the acphotovoltage and pyro-piezo-electric technique. The sample with metal-semiconductor-metal configuration was attached to the pyro(piezo)electric detector and ac-voltages can be measured. The photovoltage and pyro-piezo-electric effects are investigated as a function of the modulation frequency of excitation optical beam. A theoretical model for a metal - semiconductor - metal - pyro(piezo)electric system is given including the space-charge regions (SCR) and electronic states on the semiconductor surfaces, and thermodifussion, thermoelastic and electronic deformation effects in semiconductor.
