AB - Geopolymeric binders (GB) were produced using fly ash (FA) and electric arc furnace slag (EAFS). The slag has been added in the range of 0–40%. The effects of slag content on the strength, microstructure and thermal resistance were evaluated. It was found that the amount of EAFS up to 30% positively affects the strength evolution of GB. The main reaction product of FA/EAFS blends was amorphous N–(C)–A–S–H gel along with geopolymer-type gel (N–A–S–H). Thermal resistance of GB was considered from the standpoint of their mechanical and dimensional stability after heating in the temperature interval of 600–800 °C. The changes in mechanical and thermal properties of GB after heating are attributed to the changes in their structure. The results have shown that EAFS negatively affects the thermal resistance of GB above 600 °C due to the phase transition and morphological transformation of the amorphous gel phase.

AB - The thermal resistance of alkali-activated binders based on fly ash (FA), electric arc furnace slag (EAFS) and their FA/EAFS blends was assessed. Compressive strengths of samples before and after firing were measured. The samples were characterized by X-ray powder diffraction (XRPD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), energydispersive X-ray spectra (EDS), thermal (TG/DTA) analysis. Besides, the sintering shrinkage were recorded by thermomechanical analyzer (TMA) during non-isothermal sintering up to 900 ºC with heating rate of 15 º/min, in an air atmosphere. The main reaction products in FA and EAFS based alkali activated binders are the sodiumalumino-silicate-hydrate (N–A–S–H) and calcium-alumino-silicate-hydrate (C-A-S-H) type gels, respectively. FA/EAFS based binders are characterized by the presence of N-A-S-H gel with the high content of Ca. The EAFS based binders exhibited superior performances in terms of compressive strength than FA based binders. Thermal resistance of FA based binders was improved by the slag addition. This research was supported by a Ministry of Science of Montenegro under the contract No. 01-460.

AB - The remelting of iron and steel scrap in the electric arc furnaces generates the non-hazardous waste – electric arc furnace slag (EAFS), which can be disposed of to appropriate landfills. Currently, this slag found its application in conventional concrete production to improve its mechanical, chemical and physical properties, as an additive to asphalt base mixture and in cement production. In this study we have investigated the effect of alkaline dosage on the strength and thermal resistance of EAFS based geopolymers. The results have shown that these materials are mainly amorphous with some crystal phases remained from the undisolved EAFS such as larnite, gehlenite, wuestite, monticellite, calcite. Compressive strength of these materials is strongly influenced by the alkaline dosage. An increase of NaOH concentration in the interval of 7-10 M leads to the increase of geopolymer’s strength. The maximal compressive strength of EAFS based geopolymer was obtained using the 10 M NaOH. Further increase of alkaline dosage to the value of 13 M NaOH results in the slight decrease of the geopolymer strength. Additionally, depending on the synthesis parameters, EAFS based geopolymers exhibit improved durability in high temperature environments in comparison with conventional cement based materials. All investigated samples exhibit a shrinkage which is attributed to the change of porosity. The mass loss due to the loss of water was also observed. This research was supported by a Ministry of Science of Montenegro under the contract No 01-460.

AB - Powder mixtures of α-Bi2O3 containing 2, 5 and 10 mole % of TiO2, ZrO2 or HfO2 were homogenized, heated at 820ºC for 24 h and quenched in air. X-ray powder diffraction technique was used to characterize the prepared samples. In all cases metastable Bi2O3 polymorphs, γ-Bi2O3 or β-Bi2O3, are found as single or major phases. Addition of Ti4+ ions stabilizes γ-Bi2O3 polymorph, while either Zr4+ or Hf4+ ions stabilize β-Bi2O3 polymorph. In the samples with 2 and 5 mole % of TiO2 the presence of even two γ-Bi2O3 phases (Bi12TiO20 compound and a very low Ti-doped γ-Bi2O3) was established. Similarly, in the sample with 2 mole % of HfO2 two β-Bi2O3 phases were found. Phase composition of prepared samples, values of unit cell parameters and the appearance of two polymorphs with identical crystal structure but different unit cell parameters are discussed and compared with known data.

AB - Phase composition, crystal structure and morphology of biological hydroxyapatite (BHAp) extracted from human mandible bone, and carbonated hydroxyapatite (CHAp), synthesized by the chemical precipitation method, were studied by x-ray powder diffraction (XRD), Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) and Raman (R) spectroscopy techniques, combined with transmission electron microscopy (TEM). Structural and microstructural parameters were determined through Rietveld refinement of recorded XRD data, performed using the FullProf computing program, and TEM. Microstructural analysis shows anisotropic extension along the [0 0 l] crystallographic direction (i.e. elongated crystallites shape) of both investigated samples. The average crystallite sizes of 10 and 8 nm were estimated for BHAp and CHAp, respectively. The FTIR and R spectroscopy studies show that carbonate ions substitute both phosphate and hydroxyl ions in the crystal structure of BHAp as well as in CHAp, indicating that both of them are mixed AB-type of CHAp. The thermal behaviour and carbonate content were analysed using thermogravimetric and differential thermal analysis. The carbonate content of about 1 wt.% and phase transition, at near 790 °C, from HAp to β-tricalcium phosphate were determined in both samples. The quality of synthesized CHAp powder, particularly, the particle size distribution and uniformity of morphology, was analysed by a particle size analyser based on laser diffraction and field emission scanning electron microscopy, respectively. These data were used to discuss similarity between natural and synthetic CHAp. Good correlation between the unit cell parameters, average crystallite size, morphology, carbonate content and crystallographic positions of carbonate ions in natural and synthetic HAp samples was found.

abstract = "Phase composition, crystal structure and morphology of biological hydroxyapatite (BHAp) extracted from human mandible bone, and carbonated hydroxyapatite (CHAp), synthesized by the chemical precipitation method, were studied by x-ray powder diffraction (XRD), Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) and Raman (R) spectroscopy techniques, combined with transmission electron microscopy (TEM). Good correlation between the unit cell parameters, average crystallite size, morphology, carbonate content and crystallographic positions of carbonate ions in natural and synthetic HAp samples was found.",

AB - Extra phase-pure Li4Ti5O12 spinel with particle sizes less than 500 nm was synthesized by solid state reaction of mechanochemicaly activated mixture of nano anatase and Li2CO3 for a very short annealing time, 4 h at 800°C. Structural and microstructural properties, the mechanism of solid state reaction between anatase and Li2CO3 as well as thermal stability of prepared spinel were investigated using XRPD, SEM and TG/DSC analysis. The mechanism of reaction implies decomposition of Li2CO3 below 250ºC, formation of monoclinic Li2TiO3 as intermediate product between 400 and 600°C and its transformation to Li4Ti5O12 between 600-800ºC. The spinel structure is stable up to 1000ºC when it is decomposed due to Li2O evaporation.

AB - A series of cobalt-exchanged hydroxyapatite (CoHAp) powders with different Ca/Co ratios and nominal unit-cell contents Ca10-x Cox (PO4)6(OH)2, x = 0, 0.5, 1.0, 1.5 and 2.0, were synthesized by hydrothermal treatment of a precipitate at 473 K for 8 h. Based on ICP (inductively coupled plasma) emission spectroscopy analysis, it was established that the maximum amount of cobalt incorporation saturated at 7sim;12 at.% under these conditions. The effects of cobalt content on the CoHAp powders were investigated using ICP emission spectroscopy, particle size analysis, transmission electron microscopy (TEM) and high-resolution transmission electron microscopy (HRTEM) analyses as well as X-ray powder diffraction (XRPD) including Rietveld analysis. According to XRPD, all the materials are single-phase HAp and CoHAp of low crystallinity. Rietveld analysis shows that Co enrichment causes the c cell parameter to decrease at a faster rate than the a cell parameter. A microstructural analysis showed anisotropic X-ray line broadening due to crystallite size reduction. In CoHAp there is significant crystal elongation in [001], and the average size decreases with increasing cobalt content. The crystallite morphology transforms from rod-like for the pure HAp to lamellae at the highest degree of Co substitution. The results of Rietveld refinement (symmetry, size and morphology of the crystallites) were confirmed by TEM and HRTEM analysis. © 2010 International Union of Crystallography. AB - It is well known that inorganic part of bones and teeth are impure form of hydroxyapatite, (HAp) Ca10(PO4)6(OH) 2. During the past few decades, great efforts have been invested to develop synthetic equivalent of natural apatite. The major difference of natural bioapatites from hydroxyapatites is in the presence of certain content of 2- CO3 ions in the structure. The presence of the 2- CO3 ions in the HAp structure influences the reactivity and stability. Therefore, the exact content of 2- CO3 ions as well as their arrangement in the structure is very important. The aim of our work is comparative analysis of the biological carbonated hydroxyapatite extracted from human alveolar bone and synthesized carbonated hydroxyapatite (BCHAp). Structural and microstructural parameters were determined through Rietveld refinement of recorded XRPD data, and with transmission electron microscopy (TEM). Microstructure analysis showed anisotropic X-ray line broadening due to the small crystallite size (about 10 nm) as well as anisotropic growth of crystallites. The Raman spectroscopy confirmed the apatite structure and crystallinity.

AB - Mechanochemistry represents an alternative route in synthesis of nanomaterials. Mechanochemical routes are attractive because of their simplicity, flexibility, and ability to prepare materials by solid state reactions at room temperature. The aim of this work is the mechanochemical synthesis of nanostructured titanium oxides of different composition starting from mixtures of Ti and TiO2, TiO and TiO2 or Ti 2O3 and TiO2. Emphasis is on the Magneli phases Ti4O7 and Ti5O9 because their mixture is commercially known as EBONEX material. The materials prepared were characterized by XRPD, TG/DTA analysis, SEM and optical microscopy. Titanium monoxide and several Magneli oxides, Ti4O7, Ti 5O9 and Ti6O11, are successsfully prepared. The results are very interesting because the EBONEX materials were prepared at lower than usual temperature, which would decrease the effective cost of production.

AB - Concurrent milling of Bi4Ti3O12 was carried out in a planetary ball mill with hardened-steel 13 or 6 mm diameter balls with a goal to investigate how the system responds to the constrains imposed by milling. Milling intensity for various milling parameters was derived from the electrical power measurement. The reverse amorphous ↔ crystalline phase transition induced by milling is governed by impact energy and frequency. Below a certain threshold value of impact energy crystallization does not occur, whereas a higher impact frequency accelerates amorphization. Mechanochemical reactions are predominantly discrete processes, which occur at the moment of impact. © 2009 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

AB - A powder mixture of α-Bi2O3 and HfO2, in the molar ratio 2:3, was mechanochemically treated in a planetary ball mill under air, using zirconium oxide vials and balls as the milling medium. After 50 h of milling, the mechanochemical reaction led to the formation of a nanocrystalline δ-Bi2O3 phase (fluorite-type solid solution Bi0.78Hf0.59Zr0.63O3.61), with a crystallite size of 20 nm. The mechanochemical reaction started at a very beginning of milling accompanied by an accumulation of ZrO2 arising from the milling tools. The samples prepared after various milling times were characterized by X-ray powder diffraction and DSC analysis. The electrical properties of the as-milled and pressed Bi0.78Hf0.59Zr0.63O3.61 powder were studied using impedance spectroscopy in the temperature range from 100 to 700°C under air. The electrical conductivity was determined to be 9.43×10-6 and 0.080 S cm-1 for the temperatures of 300 and 700°C, respectively.
AB - Two new series of perovskite-type oxides LaMO3 (M = Mg, Ti, Fe) with different ratio Mg/Fe (MF) and Ti/Fe (TF) in the B cation site were prepared by annealing the precursor, obtained by the mechanochemical activation (MCA) of constituent metal oxides, at 1000 °C in air. In addition, two closely related perovskites LaFeO3 (LF) and LaTi0.5Mg0.5O3 (TM (50:50)) were synthesized in the similar way. Using MCA method, perovskites were obtained in rather short time and at room temperature. The samples were characterized by X-ray powder diffraction (XRPD), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), scanning electron microscopy (SEM) with energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDS), temperature programmed desorption of oxygen (TPD), Mössbauer spectroscopy, BET surface area measurements and tested in methane deep oxidation. According to XRPD analysis all synthesized samples are almost single perovskite phase, with trace amounts of La2O3 phase. Data of Mössbauer spectroscopy identify Fe3+ in octahedral coordination. The activity of perovskite in methane deep oxidation increases in the order TM (50:50) < MF series < TF series. Higher activity of TF samples in respect to MF with similar Fe content can be related to the structural characteristic, mainly to the presence of predominantly most labile oxygen species evidenced by TPD at lowest temperature of oxygen evaluation. In used experimental conditions, the Fe substituted perovskite are thermal stable up to the temperature of 850 °C. The stability of Fe active sites is probably the most important parameter responsible for thermal stability of perovskite, but the atomic surface composition also should be taken into account. © 2007 Elsevier B.V. AB - Powder mixtures of α-Bi2O3 (bismite) and monoclinic m-ZrO2 (baddeleyite) in the molar ratio 2:3 were mechanochemically and thermally treated with the goal to examine the phases, which may appear during such procedures. The prepared samples were characterized by X-ray powder diffraction, differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), electrical measurements, as well as scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and transmission electron microscopy (TEM). The mechanochemical reaction leads to the gradual formation of a nanocrystalline phase, which resembles δ-Bi2O3, a high-temperature Bi2O3 polymorph. Isothermal sintering in air at a temperature of 820 °C for 24 h followed by quenching to room temperature yielded a mixture of ZrO2-stabilized β-Bi2O3 and m-ZrO2 phases, whereas in slowly cooled products, the complete separation of the initial α-Bi2O3 and m-ZrO2 constituents was observed. The dielectric permittivity of the sintered samples significantly depended on the temperature. The sintered and quenched samples exhibited a hysteresis dependence of the dielectric shift, showing that the ZrO2-doped β-Bi2O3 phase possess ferroelectric properties, which were detected for the first time. This fact, together with Rietveld refinement of the β-Bi2O3/m-ZrO2 mixture based on neutron powder diffraction data showed that ZrO2-doped β-Bi2O3 has a non-centrosymmetric structure with P over(4, -) 21 c as the true space group. The ZrO2 content in the doped β-Bi2O3 and the crystal chemical reasons for the stabilization of the β-Bi2O3 phase by the addition of m-ZrO2 are discussed. © 2008 Elsevier Inc. All rights reserved.

abstract = "Powder mixtures of α-Bi2O3 (bismite) and monoclinic m-ZrO2 (baddeleyite) in the molar ratio 2:3 were mechanochemically and thermally treated with the goal to examine the phases, which may appear during such procedures. AB - Nanocrystalline cubic titanium monoxide, TiOx (0.92 < x < 1.19), with mean crystallite size of ≈ 6 nm, was synthesized by mechanochemical treatment of Ti and TiO2 (rutile) powder mixtures with molar ratios of 1:1, 1.10:1 and 1.25:1. The mechanochemical solid state reaction in a high-energy planetary ball mill was completed for 2 h in either air or argon atmosphere. During heating in vacuum at 900 and 1000 °C for 24 h, nanocrystalline TiOx transforms to a well-crystallized, cubic or monoclinic TiOx. AB - The mixed perovskite type oxides with nominal formula LaTi0.5Mg0.5-xPdxO3, (0 LT = x LT = 0.10) were prepared by anneling the ethanol solution of precursor in nitrogen flow at 1200 degrees C. X-ray powder diffraction (XRPD) analysis shows that the orthorhombic perovskite structure was found in all investigated samples. However, at least a part of palladium is not incorporated into perovskite structure and remains as separate phase, which is reduced to Pd-0 at 1200 degrees C. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) reveled the presence of Pd2+, which indicate a reoxidation of Pd-0 in the surface layers during cooling. The Pd content in the samples has a small influence on the methane oxidation activity below the temperature of 500 degrees C. At temperatures higher than 500 C, the methane oxidation activity of the sample with x = 0.05 exceeds the activity of the sample with x = 0.10. The sharp increase of methane oxidation activity over the sample with lower content of palladium at about 500 degrees C was ascribed to the higher dispersion of PdO and Pd-0 phases. Thus, the higher contribution of lattice oxygen and possible local change in oxidation state of palladium can be a reason for the enhanced activity. Contrary to the supported Pd/Al2O3 catalyst, the incorporation of palladium into perovskite matrix and interaction of PdO-Pd-0 benefits the activity of smaller particles at higher reaction temperatures.

AB - ZnO varistors with non-linearity coefficients reaching 50 and low values of the leakage current (approximately 0.01 A/m2), were obtained by a method referred to as `direct mixing of constituent phases'. The method is based on sintering of a mixture of the constituent phases with the following compositions: ZnO phase uniformly doped with Co2+ and Mn2+; intergranular phase: γ-Bi2O3 stabilized with Mn2+ or Zn2+; spinel phase: Zn1.971Ni0.090Co0.030Cr0.247Mn0.090Sb0.545O4. As proved, the obtained varistors are composed of the same phases as those introduced into the system. The influence of composition as well as milling and sintering parameters on the varistor characteristics were investigated. Some varistor powder mixtures were intensively milled before sintering. As a result, high density ceramics with highly homogeneous microstructure were obtained after sintering.

AB - Spray pyrolysis was used for the deposition of well defined submicronic to nanosize particles based on ZnO. The influence of the temperature in the range from 345 to 1165 K, solution concentration (0.004 and 1.5 mol dm(-3)) and the residence time on the particle morphology is discussed. X-ray diffraction, differential scanning calorimetry and scanning electron microscopy were used in particle characterization. With the presumption that certain particle morphology is formed during the evaporation/drying stage of spray pyrolysis, the corresponding mathematical model for droplets evaporation is developed and correlated with the empirical results.

abstract = "Spray pyrolysis was used for the deposition of well defined submicronic to nanosize particles based on ZnO. With the presumption that certain particle morphology is formed during the evaporation/drying stage of spray pyrolysis, the corresponding mathematical model for droplets evaporation is developed and correlated with the empirical results.",

AB - Nanostructured powders, with crystallite size of ZnO, spinel and γ-Bi2O3 phases below 100 nm, were obtained by the mechanical attrition of ZnO varistor powders prepared by method of directed synthesis of the constituent phases. Powders were further sintered and the resulting varistors showed excellent electrical characteristics with the non-linearity coefficients reaching 45, low values of the leakage current and density reaching 99% of the theoretical value.
