AB - Properties of sintered NdFeB magnets strongly depend on granulation and size distribution of constituent particles, which requires an efficient method for their separation into relatively narrow size fractions. We investigated two methods of magnetic particle separation from a mixture with different sizes using simulation by finite element method: magnetophoresis and gravity settling. In the case of magnetophoresis magnetic particles ranging in diameter from 1 to 10 m were deflected from the direction of continuous laminar flow by a perpendicular magnetic field. Larger particles were deflected from the direction of laminar flow more than smaller particles. The applied flow rate and strength and gradient of the applied magnetic field were the key parameters in controlling the deflection. The gravity settling model simulated spherical particles falling in heptane. Particles of various sizes were divided according to the time they needed to reach the bottom. The model used an axially symmetric fluid-flow simulation in a moving coordinate system connected with the particle, coupled with an ordinary differential equation for the force balance of the particle (gravity and drag force). The grain accelerated from standstill and rapidly reached its terminal velocity. This velocity was approximately proportional to the square of the particle radius, which led to clear separation of 5-10 um particles from those with a diameter of 1 um.

AB - Improved permanent magnets are essential for emergent applications in electronic and electric devices. Different attempts have been made to produce nanoscale anisotropic rare-earth magnetic powder based on Nd-Fe-B material. Recently, high energy surfactant assisted ball milling has been proven to be an effective technique to produce anisotropic hard magnetic Nd-Fe-B nanoparticles. In this paper we are presenting our experimental results on high energy ball milling in planetary mill "Puverisette 7 premium line" from "Fritsch". Except milling material, there are several variables which influence the milling process for the selected mill type. They are: mechanical properties of the milling media material (bowls, balls, etc.), ball-to-powder ratio (BPR), extent of filling of the milling bowl, milling atmosphere, milling speed and duration, and type of solution and surfactant for wet milling. We are going to give influence of all these parameters on obtained NdFeB magnetic materials with nanosized dimensions starting from Nd2Fe14B HDD (Hydrogenated Disproportionated Desorbed) material.

AB - In this paper we proposed microfabrication scheme for PDMS (Polydimethylsiloxane) thin membrane fabrication on Si micromachined cavities with square cross section. PDMS network samples for this research were synthesized with the same composition, which are Sylgard 184 (Dow Corning, USA) silicone elastomer base and silicone elastomer curing agent, volume ratio 10:1. Mechanical testing of PDMS elastic properties and bond strength between membranes and oxidized Si wafers, were investigated applying pressurized bulge testing In this paper experimentally determined dependence of the PDMS membrane deflection on pressure load for different membrane thicknesses and sizes of square cavities in Si wafers are given. Also, the influence of different types of Si wafer structuring by anisotropic wet chemical etching on membrane bonding strength were considered.

AB - A novel readout procedure for the determination of detection limit at an adsorption-based mercury sensor is described. The procedure is based on the evaluation of the initial voltage slope in time evolution of adsorbed elementary mercury. The Langmuir time-dependent adsorption theory is utilized to derive it. This procedure gives the theoretical minimum for the detection for this type of the sensor, which is estimated at 180 ng/m3. This is five times lower than the best previously reported results. This procedure can also be used for regular sensor readout. This work describes the experimental procedure for mercury sensor fabrication as well as its measurement cycle. The sensor is working in the cycles of mercury adsorption and evaporation induced by heating. It is shown that every part of the cycle can be monitored by measuring output voltage of the sensor without any additional measurements like surface temperature or rate of the evaporation.

AB - A novel readout procedure for a mercury sensor has been proposed. The sensor is based on the surface adsorption. Mercury vapor is adsorbed at the surface of a thin gold layer patterned into four meanders which are connected into a Wheatstone bridge configuration. Sensing is achieved by the resistivity change of the gold film during mercury adsorption. Direct output from the sensor is electric voltage. It takes an additional procedure to convert voltage to mercury concentration. This type of sensor is improved by introducing continuous readout procedure for the voltage–concentration conversion. By using this readout procedure it is possible to monitor mercury vapor concentration as a function of time. Readout is based on the Langmuir time–dependent adsorption theory. This paper illustrates a practical implementation of the new readout procedure.
