AB - The changes in the Raman spectra of electronic materials obtained from mechanically activated BaTiO3 and SrTiO3 powders, with or without additives, are presented in this paper. Mechanical activation, performed in a high-energy planetary ball mill, was chosen as the method for the production of fine-grained nanocrystalline powders with an increased surface activity and an altered micro and/or crystal structure. Having in mind the growing relevance of the development of multiferroic materials, the analysis of Raman spectra was used not only for the structural investigations of the mechanically activated undoped titanate powder, but also for the examination of the mechanically activated Fe/BaTiO3 system and the subsequent hexaferrite formation during the sintering process. Additionally, Raman spectroscopy was applied in the study of the emergence of electroactive crystalline phases in nanocomposites based on semi-crystalline fluoropolymers, such as PVDF (polyvinylidene fluoride), in the case when mechanically activated BaTiO3 powder was used as a filler in the polymer matrix. Furthermore, the effects of the mechanical activation of SrTiO3 powder on the occurrence of polar nano and micro-regions at room temperature, as well as the simultaneous influence of activation and MnO2 addition on structural changes in ceramic SrTiO3 samples, have also been analysed using Raman spectroscopy.

AB - Sintering of pure cordierite 2MgO:2Al2O3:5SiO2, and cordierite with the addition of 5 mass % TeO2 was studied. Green bodies were prepared from powder mixtures mechanically activated in a high-energy planetary mill, shaped by uniaxial (20 MPa) and cold isostatic pressing (1000 MPa). The pressure-less sintering of these specimens was performed at 1350°C for 1 h. High relative density over 95% of the theoretical value was obtained through solid-state reaction and pressure-less sintering of powder activated for 40 min, and for the first time reported in the literature. Phase composition and microstructures of sintered samples were determined by XRD and SEM, coupled with EDS mapping. The real part of the complex relative permittivity of the samples was measured at 200 MHz. The loss tangent of all samples was below the resolution of the measurement setup. A strong correlation between the relative permittivity and the density agrees with previously published data.

AB - The paper presents results of the influence of mechanical activation of shungite, a carbon-mineral rock material rich in silica and carbon, on its sintering behaviour, and obtaining of pure SiC ceramics. The mechanical activation of the starting powder was performed in a high-energy ball mill in time intervals from 30 to 480 min. The phase composition of the starting powders and sintered samples was analysed by the X-ray diffraction method. The first traces of SiC were detected after sintering at 1350 °C for 2 h in an Ar atmosphere, along with traces of unreacted SiO2. The scanning electron microscopy was performed in order to determine changes in the microstructure. Sintering was performed at various temperatures for 2 h, in an Ar atmosphere and a vacuum. Dielectric properties of the sintered samples were measured in the frequency range from 1 to 500 MHz. The obtained results indicate that the sintered powder is a good candidate for applications as an absorber of electromagnetic waves in microwave engineering. © 2019 University of Novi Sad, Faculty of Technology.
