AB - Following the end of communism, the former Yugoslav republics experienced a decade of armed conflict. In the Western Balkans, a complete synthesis between ethnicity and religion has been established. In recent years, however, transnationalist evangelical Christian communities have emerged as an antithesis to the majority religions in the Western Balkans. This paper examines the capacity of transnational evangelical communities to create interethnic tolerance in Serbia, primarily through the analysis of their humanitarian activities, their inclusiveness in relation to minority and marginalized social groups, and their influence among Serbs in the diaspora.

The Role of IRD and outreach in building trust and strengthening social inclusion in Europe: the case of Network for Dialogue

AB - Since the 2015 "migrant crisis," European nations have grappled with the challenge of integrating migrants into host communities. The "Anxious Middle," individuals with concerns about migration's societal impact without strong opposition, complicates this issue (Katwala and Somerville, 2016). Conventional methods using data and persuasion fall short in addressing these genuine concerns.

Effective approaches emphasize community connections and trust (Moretti and Bozon, 2017). Encouraging positive interactions among refugees, migrants, and locals, fostering mutual learning, forms the basis for deeper relationships. Local community organizations, such as faith-based groups and interreligious bodies, play a vital role in bridging gaps, offering volunteer opportunities, and humanizing migrants (Fiddian-Qasmiyeh, 2011). Grounding these connections in interreligious and intercultural dialogue promotes empathy, understanding, and mutual respect (Abu-Nimer and Smith, 2016).

Yet, the role of religion and dialogue in social inclusion and migration remains underexplored, especially in comparative contexts. Few empirical studies have examined this unique perspective, particularly in transnational settings where religious networks collaborate along migration routes to aid refugees and migrants (Mavelli and Wilson, 2017).

This paper spotlights the contributions of faith-based organizations (FBOs) in European countries to build trust and social cohesion among refugees and migrants. It explores the grassroots experiences of religious actors in nations like Sweden, Serbia, and Italy within the Network for Dialogue, established by the International Dialogue Centre, KAICIID, in 2019. The argument asserts that while interreligious and intercultural dialogue are crucial, FBOs' core focus on fostering community trust and providing safe dialogue spaces plays a pivotal role in fostering harmonious coexistence.

AB - The theory of cultural transfer usually includes the field of intellectual history, literature, material culture, art, and science, but it can very well be applied to the religious sphere to examine the exchange and influence of religious ideas or religious practices. Religious transfers and the mobility of religious practices have been the subject of research in individual studies, although religious transfer is most often seen as a part of cultural transfer in the broadest sense of the word. This paper focuses on the emergence of Evangelical or neo-Protestant communities in the 19th century that developed in different parts of Central Europe. Due to their missionary efforts and the mobility of religious ideas, Nazarenes, Baptists and Methodists were the first neo-Protestant communities in South Hungary and the Kingdom of Serbia. They found new followers among different ethnic groups: Hungarians, Slovaks, Germans, Serbs, and Romanians, who had very diverse religious backgrounds: Roman Catholic, Christian Orthodox, Lutheran, and Reformed. The most significant form of religious transfer in the 19th century was the appearance of the first translation of the Bible into the Serbian language. The paper underlines the important role of the British Bible Society in distributing and printing the Bible, making it available especially among neo-Protestant believers.

AB - The present special issue number 53 of Tripodos, seeks to dissect the media narratives surrounding migrants, refugees, and people on the move in Europe. Through the articles featured herein, we aim to explore various aspects of this broad topic, including specific country examples which will contribute to better understanding on the role of media in both constructing and de-constructing narratives on migration. This compilation of articles aims to shed light on the intricate global realities societies face today through the lens of media narratives on refugees. In conclusion, media narratives surrounding migrants, refugees, and people on the move are multifaceted and exert significant influence in shaping public perceptions. It is imperative to remain mindful of potential biases and stereotypes present in media.

The Possibility of Researching of Religious Minorities in the Secret Police Archives of the Former Yugoslavia

AB - This chapter explores the possibility of using secret police archives as a source for scholarly research on religious minorities in the former Yugoslavia. Unlike in other Eastern European countries, access to the secret police archives in the former Yugoslavia is still very limited: a public debate on openness is ongoing and thus far has been inconclusive. The fall of communism and the break-up of Yugoslavia presented new opportunities for research into religions. However, the available studies on the Yugoslavian religious landscape rarely cover issues related to religious minorities and state authorities. Being mostly of so-called neo-Protestant origin and less numerous than other confessional groups (Orthodox Christians, Catholics and Muslims), religious minorities have not been the main focus of scholarly research until recently. Based on archival and ethnographic research conducted in Serbia from 2009 onwards, I argue that the study of religious minorities represents a valuable lens through which to analyze relations between the state and religious groups during the communist period. This is especially true with regards to the pacifist Nazarenes and Seventh Day Adventists, who were strictly controlled by the state because of their international and transnational networks and missionary work. This chapter addresses the opportunities for archival research in the former Yugoslav Republics and the accessibility of state security archives and the holdings of other institutions (the Ministry of the Interior, the police, the judiciary/Ministry of Justice, and the Federal Commission for Religious Affairs).

AB - The forced displacement of people was one of the most significant social consequences of the wars (1991-1995) which followed the dissolution of communist Yugoslavia. The Federal Republic of Yugoslavia, and particularly Serbia, has been widely affected by this process. Studies show that over 650,000 people (mostly from Bosnia and Herzegovina and Croatia) were forcibly displaced to Serbia. This chapter explores how the state and different religious communities responded to the forced displacement of populations in Serbia (1991-1996). It focuses on the responses of the state, through the work of the Commissariat for Refugees, as well as case studies of three faith-based humanitarian organisations, namely Philanthropy, Adventist Development Relief Agency (ADRA), and Bread of Life. The research methods used for the purposes of this chapter include content analysis and a series of semi-structured interviews. The chapter concludes that the Serbian state failed to recognise the potential of faith humanitarian organisations, even though these organisations were key actors in helping the population in need.

AB - This paper presents the first attempt to review the possibility of using secret police archives as
a source for scholarly research on religious minorities in the former Yugoslavia. Unlike in other Eastern European countries, access to the secret police archives in former Yugoslavia is still very limited. Based on archival and ethnographic research conducted in Serbia, I argue that religious minorities represent a valuable resource for analysing relations between the state and religious groups during the communist period. This is especially true with regards to the pacifist Nazarenes and Seventh Day Adventists, because of their international and transnational networks and missionary work. This paper will address the possibilities of using private archives as a possible way in overcoming limited access to some of the state archival sources

“Hidden Religious Landscapes”: Religious Minorities and Religious Renewal Movements in the Borderlands of the Serbian and Romanian Banat

AB - The paper explores the ways religious grassroots actors in the borderlands contribute to the new understanding of cross border regions and religious groups in the space between the Serbian and Romanian Banat from the perspective of the anthropology of borders. The border region included in this paper was the place of interreligious and interethnic encounter, where religions and languages mixed and there was a continuous interaction between Orthodox Christians, Catholics and Protestants. By studying the region that had strong cultural, historical and religious connections, the aim is to provide new insights on the borders and religious groups that are understudied. This article explores the “liminal” character of religious identities, development of renewal movements and crossing symbolic boundaries with the examples of the “home-grown” religious movement of the Lord's Army (Rom. Oastea Domnului) emerged in the first decades of the 20th century.

AB - In contemporary society, in the processes of globalization and the creation of reterritorialized religious communities, religious pluralism represents a great challenge not only for nation states but also for religious communities themselves. The connection between globalization and new religions refers primarily to the rise of new religions from the local context and the spread of new religions in different parts of the world. Also, the impact of globalization on religious change and the creation of new identities poses a challenge to existing religion-nation-state relations. One of the aims of this paper is to show how globalization affects new religious communities in the area of multicultural and multi-confessional Vojvodina, with special emphasis on neo-Protestant communities (Nazarene, Baptist, Pentecostal, Adventist and Jehovah's Witness communities). Special emphasis is on the Romanian neo-Protestant communities, both because of their number in Vojvodina, and because of the large number of missionaries from Romania and the strong support from the Romanian diaspora. It is through the network of support and cooperation that neo-Protestant communities are intensively developing, and the borders of nation-states no longer represent the border between internal and external relations and connections, between "us" and "them". The presence of missionaries, internet and television sermons, literature translated into different languages, creates “erosion of borders”, caused by communication explosion, followed
by deterritorialization of social events (rising from the local context) leading to a different type of relationship between religious communities, nation-states and the creation of a different type of their interdependence.

From Southeast European Nazarenes to the Apostolic Christian Church in North America: Migration and Transformation of one Christian Renewal Movement

AB - Research on different religious experiences of immigrants provides an insight into how faith is embodied, lived, and carried across borders, where it may be renegotiated and transformed. In this paper, based on the case study of the community of Nazarene immigrants in the USA, I have introduced the concept of renewal in order to indicate the dynamic of change within this minority religious community. Therefore, the paper represents the initial step in contextualizing the role of migration, dislocation, and change and the correlation of migration and community transformation in the new environment. During the Second World War and the communist era in the countries of South-eastern Europe, many Nazarene believers were strongly persecuted and imprisoned due to their pacifist stance and refusal to take an oath or to vote. Even though their number weakened in the second half of the XX century, the community exists in Serbia, Hungary, Romania, and Croatia. The presented case study is a small contribution that could bring a better understanding of how migration can have an important role in the transformation and later on the renewal of one religious minority community from South-eastern Europe. Seeking a ‘free society’ to escape religious and political oppression, the Nazarenes from Yugoslavia left church buildings, land, and even family members. Migration and escape could be seen as a survival strategy of one alternative religious community in the years of communist rule in Yugoslavia.

AB - The Orthodox renewal movements represent an important part of the history of the Orthodox churches in Eastern and Southeastern Europe during the 20th century. Renewal movements also had an impact on the Romanian Orthodox Church in the Yugoslav Banat, with the first communities of the Lord’s Army movement founded in the second half of the twentieth century. The first local organizations were established in Uzdin, Straja, Sân Mihai and Doloave, and during the ’30 in almost all the Romanian Orthodox parishes in inter-war Yugoslavia. The renewal movements contributed to the significant changes of the orthodoxy, both Romanian and Serbian Orthodox Church. Collaboration between Romanian – Lord’s Army and Serbian God’s Worshippers movement existed which was an important factor for the interconfessional relations in the Banat during the interwar period.

Collaboration between Romanian – Lord’s Army and Serbian God’s Worshippers movement existed which was an important factor for the interconfessional relations in the Banat during the interwar period.",

AB - In this paper, my case study highlights Romanian neo-Protestant migrants from Serbia who either returned to their “home country,” or work on different missionary activities among their co-ethnics after the fall of communism. To a large degree, members of the Romanian minority in Serbia belong to the Romanian Orthodox Church, which is the dominant confession, then a smaller number to the Romanian Greek-Catholic church and various neo-Protestant communities, such as the Nazarene, the Adventist, the Baptist, and the Pentecostal community. Starting from the hypothesis that the conversion of the Romanians in Serbia to neo-Protestantism is closely related to issues of migration, whether the conversion occurred while living abroad or they were, for religious reasons, forced to leave the country, the focus of this paper is transformation of social relations among converted Romanians and their co-ethnics. Based on the results from ethnographic research conducted in Serbia in 2014–2015, I will focus on how migrants perceive themselves and their co-ethnic attitudes towards them. Becoming a part of transnational religious community and emphasizing supra-nationality, the Romanian neo-Protestants perceive themselves as a part of “worldwide brotherhood,” adopting some new forms of collective identity while distancing themselves from the Romanian Orthodox tradition. Thus, religious otherness raises questions of the attitude of the Romanian local community towards the Romanian neo-Protestant migrants and their new religious, cultural, and social practices.

AB - Research on the position of women in the Eastern Orthodox churches is still scarce. Some recent studies show differences among the various Orthodox Churches in Eastern Europe regarding
women’s issues. The position of the women in the Serbian Orthodox Church (SOC) was addressed as late as in the 1990s, but this is still an insufficiently examined field. Eastern Orthodox theologians have rarely discussed the problem of the position and role of women in the SOC. During the socialist era, they did not engage this topic, except in studies related to female monasticism. On the other hand, sociological and anthropological studies have only recently started to include the topic of women in religion and in the church in their research on religiosity in Serbia. However, serious empirical research is still insufficient. The aim of this contribution is to outline the position of women in Orthodox Christianity, to discuss the attitude of the SOC towards this issue and to summarize the changes related to it in the last 100 years

AB - Over the last few years the study on religion of various ethnic groups in Banat has increasingly attracted the attention of ethnologists and anthropologists, as well as other related disciplines. Our research has included Romanians in Banat that belong to the Romanian Orthodox Church, Greek Catholic (Uniate) Church and neo-Protestant communities. In this paper we present the results of ethnographic field and archival research on religiosity of the Romanians in Banat, indicating a dynamic and diverse religious life within this ethnic group. Research in local parish archives brought a series of data from church history, primarily unpublished documents on the Romanian parishes within the diocese of Vršac before ecclesiastical division (1864) and during the church division, documents on the establishment of the Romanian Orthodox Metropolitanate (1865) and the Romanian diocese based in Caransebes and Arad. This research has included the topic of the Romanian Orthodox pilgrimages in Banat, between the two world wars and during the period of socialist Yugoslavia. In this paper we will analyze the phenomenon of Orthodox Christian renewal movement – the Lord’s Army (Rom. Oastea Domnului), which has been developed within the Romanian Orthodox Church in Banat at the time the largest expansion of neo-Protestant communities. Presenting the above-mentioned forms of religiosity of the Romanians, with short overview on their history and present state, we will emphasize the role of religion and the research of so called „alternative religious traditions “, as an important part of the intangible cultural heritage of this region.

Presenting the above-mentioned forms of religiosity of the Romanians, with short overview on their history and present state, we will emphasize the role of religion and the research of so called „alternative religious traditions “, as an important part of the intangible cultural heritage of this region.",

AB - The number of religious minorities from Central and Eastern Europe prone to migration to the
English-speaking world increased considerably during the nineteenth and twentieth centuries.
Among them were the Evangelical Baptists, or Neutäufer, founded by a former Reformed
minister, Samuel Fröhlich, around 1830 in Switzerland. Reviving some of the old Mennonite
principles, this newly emerging religious community was emphasizing nonresistance, a refusal of
taking oaths, the rejection of infant baptism, and separation from the world. Their expansion to
Southeastern Europe in the late nineteenth century attracted new members from various ethnic
groups. Because of state oppression and religious persecution, the Nazarenes from Yugoslavia
started to immigrate to North America. There, they joined the Apostolic Christian Church, which
was the official name of the Nazarene community in the United States and Canada. The material
collected for this article is the result of empirical research conducted in Serbia and the United
States on the history of the Nazarene migration to North America after the Second World War.
The geographical focus of my research is the area of Akron and Mansfield, Ohio, which received
the most Nazarene immigrants from Yugoslavia. Based on qualitative interviews with
community members and archival research (Virginia Historical Society Archives), this paper
addresses several questions: what the migration waves of the Nazarenes were, how the
Nazarenes integrated into the new society, and how this religious community transformed in the
English- speaking world.

AB - Different historical and socio-political circumstances often were the cause of migration, especially in the countries of Southeastern Europe. Migration was also triggered by religious persecution of particular religious minorities by different political systems, one of them being the Nazarenes. The Nazarenes were founded by a former Reformed minister Samuel Fröhlich around 1830 in Switzerland, but they soon expanded to Central and Eastern Europe. Because of their pacifist beliefs and refusal to swear and to take an oath a large number of the Nazarenes were condemned to severe prison sentences. Defending their religious identity and escaping religious persecution, thousands of Nazarenes started to emigrate especially during the First World War and in the interwar period to North America. In North America they joined the Apostolic Christian Church (Nazarene), which was the official name of the Nazarene community in the United States and Canada. The material presented in this paper results from empirical research, conducted in Serbia and the United States, on the history of the Nazarene emigration to North America. The aim of this paper is twofold: to analyze how early migration is remembered by the Nazarenes today and how the Nazarenes, as a religious minority from Southeastern Europe, became a trans-national religious community that developed in several branches. The paper shows how religion could be a ‘channel for migration’ and how immigrants used religion in processes of migration.

AB - The Nazarenes were founded by a former Reformed minister Samuel Fröhlich about 1830 in Switzerland, but they soon expanded to Central and Eastern Europe. Because of their pacifist beliefs and refusal to swear and to take an oath a large number of the Nazarenes were condemned to severe prison sentences. This religious community was persecuted primarily during the communist era in Southeastern European countries (Hungary, Romania, Yugoslavia) since they were considered disloyal citizens and a threat to the government. From 1945 until 1960 the Nazarene illegal border crossing from Yugoslavia to Italy or Austria was highly present. Rejecting one of the essential components of Yugoslav communism, so-called “nationwide defence and social self-protection”, the Nazarenes were perceived as anti-communists and their existence was seen as illegitimate. The repression of this religious minority in communist Yugoslavia is the subject of this paper. The material collected for the purposes of this paper came to be the result of empirical research, conducted in Serbia (2009–2013) and the United States (2015), on the Nazarene community and their emigration to North America. Based on qualitative interviews and archival research, this paper aims to analyse community members’ narratives of their lives during communism and emigration of this religious minority across the Atlantic.

AB - The migration of religious minorities from the region of Southeast Europe to North America was not in the focus of ethno-anthropological, sociological and historiographical research until recently. In the last two decades, the main focus in migration studies was on labor and economic migration, and only indirectly to the religious identity of migrants. This paper discusses the migration of one neo-Protestant religious minority - the Nazarenes, who emigrated massively from Yugoslavia to North America after the Second World War. The Nazarenes were pacifists, refusing to bear arms, take an oath, or to be members of political organizations. By adhering to their strict religious beliefs, the Nazarenes came into conflict with the state authorities. After the Second World War, the communist state considered Nazarenes as disloyal citizens and a threat to the government. From 1949, the Nazarenes were condemned to severe prison sentences in the worst prisons such as Goli otok. In this period, the illegal emigration of Nazarenes to North America started. The material collected for the purposes of this paper came to be the result of empirical research, conducted in the United States (March-June 2015) with members of the Nazarene community who emigrated from Yugoslavia between 1950 and 1975. Emphasizing the role of religion in the process of migration, as well as the transformation of the community after several decades in their new setting, this paper analyzes the oral history of emigration of the Nazarenes during communism, where emigration is seen as 'survival strategy' for this religious minority.
