AB - Zirconium carbide ceramics were prepared by carbothermal reduction of ZrO2 and C that were mixed by high-energy ball milling. Powders were milled for times from 0 to 120 min in air. As milling time increased, the surface area of the powders increased, indicating significant particle size reduction. Milled powders were reacted at 1600 °C and then densified by spark plasma sintering at 2000 °C, which was sufficient to convert the starting powders to zirconium carbide. Unmilled powders did not reach full density. Milled powders reached full density, but ZrO2 impurities were found for specimens prepared from powders milled for 60 and 120 min. Microstructure analysis showed that grain size was less than 2 µm for ceramics produced from powder milled for 15 min. Based on densification onset temperature and impurity levels, a milling time of 15 min gives the best balance of particle size reduction to promote densification while minimizing impurity levels.

AB - In the search for environmentally friendly materials with a wide range of properties, polymer composites have emerged as a promising alternative due to their multifunctional properties. This study focuses on the synthesis of composite materials consisting of four components: bacterial nanocellulose (BNC) modified with magnetic Fe3O4, and a mixture of BaTiO3 (BT) and polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF). The BT powder was mechanically activated prior to mixing with PVDF. The influence of BT mechanical activation and BNC with magnetic particles on the PVDF matrix was investigated. The obtained composite films’ structural characteristics, morphology, and dielectric properties are presented. This research provides insights into the relationship between mechanical activation of the filler and structural and dielectric properties in the PVDF/BT/BNC/Fe3O4 system, creating the way for the development of materials with a wide range of diverse properties that support the concept of green technologies.

AB - Magnesium aluminate has the spinel structure along with good mechanical, chemical, and thermal properties. Magnesium aluminate has a wide range of applications including refractory ceramics, optically transparent ceramic windows, and armors. Its low dielectric permeability and low loss tangent enable its applications for integrated electronic devices, as well. In this paper, MgO and Al2O3 powders were mixed in a one-to-one molar ratio and calcined at temperatures ranging from 1500 to 1800°C to produce phase pure spinel. Thereafter, pellets were crushed and treated in a planetary ball mill for 60 min to obtain a fine powder. All powders were examined for phase composition, crystal structure, and morphology. The obtained results showed that by increasing the temperature, samples with higher density were synthesized. Milling for 1 h led to formation of larger particles, but finer powders after milling. XRPD and Raman spectroscopy showed disorder in the crystal structure after milling.

AB - Mechanical activation represents a very useful technique for powder processing prior to sintering process. First of all, it makes powders homogenized, leads to attrition of powder particles, and makes powder mixtures more reactive. Secondly, it can lead to mechano-chemical reaction, and finally, lowering of sintering time and temperature. Mixtures of ZrO2 and C were mechanically activated by high-energy ball milling. Powders were milled for times from 0 to 120 minutes in air atmosphere. Mechanically activated powder mixtures were characterized by various techniques, such as particle size analysis (PSA), X-ray powder diffraction (XRPD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), Fourier-transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy, Raman spectroscopy, and diffraction scanning calorimetry along with thermo gravimetry (DSC-TGA). As milling time increased, surface area of powders increased, indicating significant particle size reduction. Mechanical activation for 15 minutes provides the best balance between particle size reduction and reactivity for the powders.

AB - Magnesium aluminate has spinel structure and very good mechanical, chemical, and thermal properties. Owing to these properties, it has a wide range of applications including refractory ceramics, optically transparent ceramic windows and armors. Its low dielectric permeability and low loss tangent enable its using for integrated electronic devices, as well. Furthermore, as a porous ceramic, magnesium aluminate has important application as humidity sensor, catalyst and filter for waste water purification. In this paper, synthesis and characterization of MgAl2O4 was performed. Stochiometric ratio of MgO and Al2O3powders was mixed and calcined within the temperatures range 1500-1800 oC to produce pure spinel phase. Thereafter pellets were crushed and treated in planetary ball mill for 60 minutes to obtained fine grain. All powders, calcined and milled, were examined for phase composition, crystal structure, and morphology. The obtained results showed that by increasing the temperature denser samples but more fragile have been synthesized. Milling for 1 hour leads to crumble of bigger particles and getting finer, single phase powders. XRPD and Raman spectroscopy showed disorder in crystal structure after milling.

AB - Magnesium aluminate, MgAl2O4, and other alumina-based spinels are refractory ceramics with high hardness and resistance to chemical attack while also being possible microwave dielectrics. Pure MgAl2O4 can be optically transparent when fully dense. Spinels exhibit inversion, which results in disorder among occupancy of A and B site cations. The goal of this study was to examine the effects of mechanical activation and composition on the temperature required for spinel formation and the site occupancy in the resulting spinel.
MgAl2O4 was produced by solid state reaction between MgO and alpha-Al2O3. The starting powders were mixed by ball milling to homogenize the powders without significant particle size reduction. Mechanical activation of mixed powders was performed in a high-energy planetary ball mill in air for 1 h. Powders were compacted at 300 MPa. Heat treatments were performed in air, at temperatures ranging from 1200 to 1500 °C with 2 h dwell time, to determine the amount of spinel formation as a function of temperature. Phase composition and microstructure of initial powders and heated samples were determined by means of X-ray diffraction, particle size analysis, and scanning electron microscopy. The influence of milling and consolidation parameters were studied by electrical measurements and mechanical characterization.
The main results of this study were that mechanical activation for 60 minutes initiated a mechano-chemical reaction, and resulted in spinel formation at much lower temperatures than within non-activated powders. Microstructures of ceramics sintered below 1400 oC indicated that final stage sintering started at much lower temperatures for activated samples than for non-activated samples.
Changes in microstructure parameters, as a consequence of mechanical treatment and subsequent heating of investigated powder mixtures, strongly affect electrical and mechanical properties of the final ceramics.

AB - Single crystalline phase MgAl2O4 is made from the predetermined composition of MgO-Al2O3 powder mixture by using ball-milling. Mixtures of MgO and Al2O3 are treated in planetary ball mill for 30, 60, 90 and 120 minutes, in air. The aim of this experiment was to examine phase composition, microstructure, and densification behavior of all sintered samples and to find out which sample has the best features for further use. After sintering in dilatometer at 1500 °C, XRD patterns and SEM images were recorded. The results show that mechanical activation is an efficient method to improve the densification behavior of MgAl2O4 sintered specimens. With the prolonged milling time, densities increased, reaching the maximum value of 2.8 g/cm3 for sample activated 120 minutes.

AB - Single phase MgAl2O4 was made from a one-to-one molar ratio of MgO and Al2O3 powders mixed using ball-milling. Mixtures of MgO and Al2O3 were subsequently treated in planetary ball mill for 30, 60, 90 and 120 minutes in air. The aim of this study was to examine phase composition, microstructure, and densification behavior of sintered specimens. After sintering in dilatometer at 1500 °C, the powder was converted to single phase MgAl2O4. The results show that mechanical activation improved the densification behavior of MgAl2O4 sintered specimens, and it reduced the onset temperature for sintering by approx. 100 oC. Based on dilatometer data, powders were subsequently densified at 1450 oC by hot pressing. Almost аll specimens exhibited full density, while sample activated for 30 minutes showed the fastest densification rate.

AB - Magnesium aluminate and other alumina-based spinels attract attention due to their high hardness, high mechanical strength, and low dielectric constant. MgAl2O4 was produced by solid-state reaction between MgO and a-Al2O3 powders. Mechanical activation was used to increase the reactivity of powders and decrease the sintering temperatures. Mechanical activation of mixed powders was performed in a high-energy planetary ball mill in air for 30, 60, 90, and 120 minutes. The resulting powders were characterized to determine the effect of activation on surface area, particle size, and crystallinity. Mechanical activation decreased particle size, increased surface area, and increased the width of peaks in x-ray diffraction. Dilatometry was used to monitor densification behavior up to 1500 °C. For non-activated powders, sintering started at approximately 1400 °C, while for activated powders, the onset temperature decreased to about 1340 °C. Mechanical activation is an efficient method to improve the densification behaviour of MgAl2O4 produced from mixed oxide powders.

AB - Corundum (α-alumina) is a suitable material for usage in various industry fields owing to its chemical stability, electrical and mechanical features. It is known that properties of ceramics could be modified by addition of different oxides, as well as by changing the consolidation parameters. In this respect, alumina was doped with 1 wt.% of Cr2O3, Mn2O3 and NiO, followed by 1 hour of mechanical activation in a high-energy planetary ball mill. A sensitive dilatometer was used for sintering of powder mixtures up to 1400 oC and recording the obtained dilatation. The final density varied between cca. 1.9 and 3.3 g/cm3. Microstructural changes were detected by SEM measurements. Changes in electrical permittivity and loss tangent were associated with the preparation conditions (types of additives, duration of mechanical activation). For a given mixture, the sintering increases the relative permittivity and decreases losses, exhibiting the optimal values of 8.32 and 0.027, respectively, for the sample activated 60 minutes and sintered, with the addition of MnO2. Mechanical measurements indicate significant differences in strength with the addition of different transition metal oxides. Samples with Mn and Ni, activated and sintered, with strength of 121 and 86 MPa, respectively, have a significantly higher tensile strength than the other tested samples, due to their more compact microstructures.

AB - Bioactive glasses have been used for over three decades in biomedical applications owing to high bioactivity, biocompatibility, as well as the possibility to stimulate regeneration of the bone. The aim of this work was to synthesized bioactive glasses, which contain lithium and strontium, by commercial method melting-quenching, as well as determining the properties, affected by mentioned ions. Differential thermal/thermogravimetric analysis, particle size distribution, energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy, inductively coupled plasma optical emission spectrometry, evaluation of the antimicrobial activity, in vitro bioactivity and biocompatibility test and scanning electron microscopy were used for characterization. The results showed that glass transition and crystallization temperatures are decreasing with addition of lithium and strontium ions. Furthermore, the samples showed high inhibition rate of Escherichia coli growth, as well as high bioactivity and biocompatibility. The crystal apatite layer, formed on the surface of synthesized glasses after seven days in simulated body fluid, differs in shape, size and interconnection of the glass particles, which depends on concentration of lithium and strontium ions.

AB - Recently, with the huge use of smart gadgets, developing of smart jewelry represents a very interesting segment in material science, as well as in electronic science. Alumina is widely used ceramic in many industrial fields as pigments, catalysis, microelectronics, etc., mostly because of its low cost and appropriate mechanical and electrical properties, high surface area and thermal stability. Also, modified alumina could be applied in production of smart jewelry. Thus, the main objectives of this investigation is to improve features of sintered alumina doped with Mn2O3 along with mechanical treatment, in order to obtain strong ceramic with low values of dielectric loss and low relative dielectric permittivity, as well as esthetic. Commercial alumina powder was doped with 1 wt % of manganese oxide and treated in planetary ball mill for an hour. Characteristic temperatures of both powders (non-activated and activated one) were investigated in detail by DTA and TG analyses. After sintering at 1200, 1300, and 1400 oC for 2 h, XRD patterns and SEM images were recorded. Furthermore, mechanical and electrical properties were examined for all sintered samples.

AB - Sintered alumina powder represents suitable material for usage in various industry fields (e.g., as chip carriers in electronics, microwaves, jewelry production), due to convenient physical properties, such as sinterability, electrical and mechanical features. Those properties can be modified by addition of different oxides and/or mechanical treatment. Therefore, in this investigation the alumina was doped with 1 wt. % of Cr2O3, Mn2O3 and NiO, respectively, followed by 1 hour of mechanical activation at 400 rpm in planetary ball mill. Sintering of powder mixtures was tracked by sensitive dilatometer up to 1400 °C. The final density values varied from cca. 2 ̶ 3.2 g/cm3. Changes in microstructure were observed by means of SEM. The influence of additives along with mechanical activation is monitored trough changes in electrical permittivity and loss tangent. Compared to pure alumina, the additives lower the relative permittivity and increase dielectric losses. For a given mixture, the sintering increases the relative permittivity and decreases losses.

AB - Thermal dehydration of two heterometallic complexes containing dianion of phthalic acid, pht, Na2[Cu(pht)2] · 2H2O, 1, and K2[Cu(pht)2] · 2H2O, 2, was investigated under non-isothermal conditions. Mechanism and kinetics of dehydration were analyzed in detail using TG/DSC/MS measurements, XRPD analysis and FT-IR spectroscopy. The reversibility of dehydration processes was identified. According to XRPD, dehydrated product of 1 maintains original structure, but dehydration of 2 undergoes structural transformation giving a dehydrated product of different crystal structure. In both cases dehydration process involves more than one elementary step, which was confirmed using isoconversional methods Deconvolution of this process using Fraiser-Suzuki function yielded two single step processes for 1 and 2. Subsequent kinetic analysis was performed using Màlek algorithm, resulting in the determination of kinetic triplets (Ea, A and f(α)) for each individual step. In addition, the dehydrated complexes were investigated as possible candidates for H2 adsorption, using molecular simulations.

In addition, the dehydrated complexes were investigated as possible candidates for H2 adsorption, using molecular simulations.",

AB - The electrochemical oxidation of the urea in near neutral pH is investigated on platinum electrode. It is shown that oxidation reaction is practically inhibited up to the potentials of ∼0.9 V. The same reaction is investigated onto electrochemically obtained titanium dioxide nanotubes modified by hematite using facile, low-cost successive ion layer adsorption and reaction (SILAR) method. It is shown that such system possesses electrocatalytic activity at very low potentials, and activity can be further improved by the illumination of the electrode in the photo-assisted reaction. The possible application of the photoactive anode is considered in the application of urea based water electrolysis and urea based fuel cell.

AB - Thermal degradation of ternary transition metal complex containing tetraanion of pyromellitic acid, pyr, and ethylenediamine, en, [Ni2(en)2(H2O)6(pyr)]·4H2O, 1, was investigated under non-isothermal conditions. The mechanism of thermal degradation, which occurs in three steps, was clarified by TG/DSC measurements in conjunction with FT-IR spectroscopy and XRPD analysis. The complexity of all degradation steps has been revealed using isoconversional methods. Dehydration comprises the loss of ten water molecules in a relatively narrow temperature interval, resulting in a very complicated reaction mechanism. In addition, density functional theory calculations have been applied for better understanding of dehydration. The second degradation step, related to loss of en, was separated into two single-step processes with Fraser–Suzuki function. The obtained individual steps were described by Johnson–Mehl–Avrami A2 model and Šesták–Berggren model, respectively. Validation of the proposed kinetic triplets for individual steps was performed using master plot and Pérez-Maqueda criteria. The third degradation step is related to the fragmentation of pyr ion most likely followed with the release of a number of gaseous products.

AB - In this study, the synthesis of biodiesel or fatty acid methyl esters (FAME) from sunflower oil and methanol using CaO·ZnO catalyst was investigated. Catalyst was synthesized by ball milling of Ca(OH)2 and ZnO powder mixture with the addition of water (BMH), as well as solely by ball milling of mentioned powders (BM) and subsequent calcination at 700 °C in air atmosphere. For comparison, the CaO·ZnO mixed oxide was also prepared using usual coprecipitation procedure (CP) followed by calcination at 700 °C of the formed calcium zinc hydroxide hydrate. The BMH, BM and CP catalysts were characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD), thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), particle size distribution measurement and scanning electron microscopy (SEM and SEM-EDS). In addition, specific surface area (BET), solubility in methanol at 60 °C and alkalinity (Hammett indicator method) were also determined. The activity of BMH, BM and CP catalysts for biodiesel synthesis were tested at 60 °C and 1 bar, using molar ratio of sunflower oil to methanol of 1:10 and with 2 wt% of catalyst based on oil weight.
