Th is work provides synthetic overview of the Great National Assembly of
the Serb People in Montenegro in 1918, as one of the more important events in
the process of Serbian, and then Yugoslav unifi cation. Th is event, also known
in historiography as Podgorica Assembly, was part of a broad movement of
national councils at the end of the World War I throughout Europe. Th e idea of
unifi cation of the Serb people into one national state was dominant in Serbia and
in Montenegro during the 19th and at the beginning of the 20th century, in spite
of more or less visible dynastic rivalry and envy, which were especially present in
the attitude of Montenegrin prince Nikola. Main, but not the only, opponent of the
unifi cation was Austria-Hungary, which was obvious already during the second
half of the 19th century, and even more so at the beginning of the 20th century.
With victories of the Entente armies on European fronts towards the end of the
World War I, as well as with the beginning of breakthrough on the Macedonian
front in September 1918, situation was developing towards collapse of Austro Hungarian imperial ideas and affi rmation of Serbian and Yugoslav idea. Part of
these events was Great National Assembly of the Serb People in Montenegro held
in Podgorica from November 24-29, 1918. Th e decisions made by the Assembly
on November 26, 1918, about dethroning king Nikola Petrović and Montenegro’s
unifi cation with Serbia were undoubtedly a democratic expression of political will
of majority of the Serb people in Montenegro. Unlike the vast majority of the
people, who supported the Assembly’s decisions, king Nikola’s supporters tried,
with help from Italy, to deny decisions of the Podgorica Assembly via an armed
rebellion in the so-called Christmas Rebellion in 1919. In the last few decades,
with the attempts of radical national and political recomposition of the South East Europe, there was an ideological revision of scientifi c knowledge about
history of the Balkans, including Montenegro. Historical meaning and progressive
importance of the decisions made during Great National Assembly of the Serb
People in Montenegro is especially disputed.",
