Fractals and ceramics materials characterization

AB  - Large part of powder based materials; especially ceramics are porous in more or less percentage. For such materials, two separated spaces are present. The “positive” space is made by grains or particles, while the “negative” space is “reserved” for pores. Formally speaking, the bulk of material space, V can be written as an union of “positive” and “negative” space which otherwise have no common points. Pores and grains share same surfaces, and since grains have fractal nature, with fractal interior and fractal boundary surfaces, the pores also have fractal “walls”. This implies two conclusions: the pores should be treated as the fractal objects, i.e., the objects having non-fractal interior, and fractal surface with dimension equal to grain’s fractal dimension. Suppose that the morphology of materials changes through time for the consideration process. By box counting methods fractal dimension definition, it follows that three sintering phase formulae based on the union described above, the sintering initial phase, the Frenkel formula takes corrected form including fractal dimension value. In this paper we applied four methods: Cube counting, Triangulation, Variance and Power spectrum method. All of these are very important and quite a different then the other, Ceramic Characterization Classic methods, what is opening new frontiers in material science characterization.

AB  - Ceramics grain structure is difficult to describe by using traditional analytical methods based on Euclidean geometry. Using the fractal geometric/analytic methods instead, the new approach is offered in this paper. There are a many materials that can be doped to BaTiO3, in order to gain different characteristics and in this study we are using Ho2O3. Different concentrations has been used, as well as different sintering temperatures. For selected contacted grains, the SEM (Scanning Electron Microscope) pictures are taken providing suitable configuration for an electrical model study. It is shown that ferroelectric, optoelectric and piezoelectric properties, are influenced by fractal structure of grains and intergrains contacts, distribution of pores and inner dynamics during sintering process. Nowadays the material science is aware of importance of taking fractal properties of different ceramics and a new analytic and numerical models are suggested. The similar behavior is discovered in thin films and nano technologies as well.

AB  - An influence of dopant concentration on microstructure and dielectric properties of doped BaTiO3-ceramics is developed based on fractal geometry. Using different technological parameters and different additives the structure of BaTiO3 based ceramics materials can be controlled. In this research, BaTiO3 samples with different concentration of Ho2O3 are used. The ratio of dopant concentration ranges from 0.05% to 1%. The sintering temperature of 1350°C is chosen. Selected specimens of BaTiO3 were documented using SEM (Scanning Electron Microscope) equipped with EDS analysis. As it is expected, the influence of impurities on intergranular capacity and other electrical properties is significant which is demonstrated and confirmed in this paper. Using the method of fractal modeling, a reconstruction of microstructure configurations, like grains shapes or intergranular contacts is performed. Such interdisciplinary research is important for opening new frontiers in electronics, and give us a fine perspective in dielectric materials. A merit of such perspective is definition of a bond between microelectronics and materials and components made for sensors and actuators.

Microstructural investigations were carried out using scanning electron microscopy (JEOL-JSM 5300) equipped with EDS (QX 2000S) system. Grain size distribution was determined by quantitative metallography method. The new correlation between microstructure and dielectric properties of doped BaTiO3-ceramics based on fractal geometry and contact surface probability is recently developed. The presented results indicate that statistical model of contact surfaces is very important for the prognosis of BaTiO3-ceramics microstructure and dielectric properties.

abstract = "The materials based on BaTiO3 can be controlled using different technological parameters and different additives. We investigate the influence of different temperature levels of sintering (1320°C, 1350°C and 1380°C) on the size of contact area for 0.1% Ho2O3 doped BaTiO3 ceramic. Microstructural investigations were carried out using scanning electron microscopy (JEOL-JSM 5300) equipped with EDS (QX 2000S) system. Grain size distribution was determined by quantitative metallography method. The new correlation between microstructure and dielectric properties of doped BaTiO3-ceramics based on fractal geometry and contact surface probability is recently developed. The presented results indicate that statistical model of contact surfaces is very important for the prognosis of BaTiO3-ceramics microstructure and dielectric properties.",

AB  - Barium-titanate based ceramics belongs to one of very important group of functional ceramics that can be used on a large scale of applications. The properties of BaTiO3 based ceramics are fundamentally correlated with grain boundary effects and consequently with the microstructure developed during sintering process. The purpose of this paper is an investigation of the effects of various dopants (La, Nb, Er, Yb, Ho, Sb) on the microstructure properties and contact surfaces. AB  - In this article, ytterbium and erbium oxides are used as doping materials for barium titanate (BaTiO3) materials. The amphoteric behavior of these rare-earth ions leads to the increase of dielectric permittivity and decrease of dielectric losses. BaTiO3 ceramics doped with 0.01-0.5 wt% of Yb2O3 and Er2O3 were prepared by conventional solid-state procedure and sintered at 1320°C for 4 h. In BaTiO3 doped with a low content of rare-earth ions (0.01 wt%) the grain size ranged between 10 and 25 μm. With the higher dopant concentration of 0.5 wt%, the abnormal grain growth is inhibited and the grain size ranged between 2 and 10 μm. The measurements of capacitance and dielectric losses as a function of frequency and temperature have been carried out in order to correlate the microstructure and dielectric properties of doped BaTiO 3 ceramics. The temperature dependence of the dielectric constant as a function of dopant amount has been investigated. © 2009 The American Ceramic Society.

AB  - Quaternary spinel oxide LiMn1.825Cr0.175O4 Powder was synthesized by using an ultrasonic spray pyrolysis method, without additional annealing. The crystal structure of the as-prepared powder was revealed by X-ray powder diffraction and identified as a single spinel phase with Fd3m space group. The powders had a spherical morphology with extremely smooth surface appearance and densely congested interior structure. Transmission electron microscopy confirmed that the particle consisted by the cohesion of the primary particles. Magnetic measurements performed in DC field in both zero-field-cooled and field-cooled regimes, as well as AC susceptibility experiments, show that system undergoes spin-glass transition at the freezing temperature T-f = 20 K. The value of the effective magnetic moment mu(eff) = 4.34 mu(B) Obtained from the Curie-Weiss fit in the high temperature region confirms the substitution of Mn3+ ions with Cr3+ ions. The crystal structure of the as-prepared powders was revealed by X-ray powder diffraction. Structure refinements confirm that SC sample crystallizes in Fd3m space group, while Q sample crystallizes in I4(1)/amd space group. Particle morphology was determined by scanning electron microscopy. Electrochemical intercalation and deintercalation were examined in galvanostatic regime.

Preparation and properties of polymeric and composite bioresorbable barrier membranes

AB  - Bioresorbable barrier membranes have been widely used in dentistry and maxillofacial surgery. When the membranes are placed over bony defects and are closely adapted by the surrounding bone face, an environment that prevents invasion of competing non-osteogenetic cells from the overlying soft tissues can be created. The aim of the present study was to establish whether the production procedure of different polymeric and composite membranes affects their physicochemical properties. The physicochemical properties were examined by differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), scanning electron microscopy (SEM) with energy dispersive spectroscopy (EDS), inverse gas chromatography (lGC) and tensile strength test (TST). The surface microstructure, dependent on the processing parameters, was perforated with smaller or larger pores. The dispersive component of the free surface energy decreased by adding bicalcium phosphate (BCP) to the polymer and, consequently, non-polar interactions with the surroundings became preferential.

abstract = "Bioresorbable barrier membranes have been widely used in dentistry and maxillofacial surgery. When the membranes are placed over bony defects and are closely adapted by the surrounding bone face, an environment that prevents invasion of competing non-osteogenetic cells from the overlying soft tissues can be created. The aim of the present study was to establish whether the production procedure of different polymeric and composite membranes affects their physicochemical properties. The physicochemical properties were examined by differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), scanning electron microscopy (SEM) with energy dispersive spectroscopy (EDS), inverse gas chromatography (lGC) and tensile strength test (TST). The surface microstructure, dependent on the processing parameters, was perforated with smaller or larger pores. The dispersive component of the free surface energy decreased by adding bicalcium phosphate (BCP) to the polymer and, consequently, non-polar interactions with the surroundings became preferential.",
