AB - Alkali activated slag (AAS) is an environmentally friendly material which were extensively investigated in a pass two decade. Currently, these materials are considering as an effective alternative for cement binder. Process of slag alkali activation involves a chemical reaction between solid calcium aluminosilicate materials and a highly alkaline activator. The alkali activation mechanism of slag consists of the slag dissolution in a highly alkaline which is followed by the condensation and hardening processes yielding formation of calcium (alumina) silicate hydrate C– (A)–S–H gel as a reaction product of slag alkali activation. Properties of these materials primarily depends on the choice of solid row materials. Primarily, granulated blast furnace slag, by product of iron production) is considering as a precursor for AAS synthesis. However, an important shift towards the use of steelmaking slag is also observed. Although electric arc furnace slag has already found its application mainly in civil engineering, this investigation has aimed to investigate properties of AAS prepared using the electric arc furnace slag (EAFS) with an emphasize with different possibilities of its application. Characterization of AAS involved XRDP, SEM/EDS and pore size analysis with the aim to build up a detailed illustration of AAS from the stand point of different application.

AB - An emerging technology of active packaging enables prolongation of food shelf life by limiting the oxygen transfer and the reactivity of free radicals, which both destruct food freshness. In this work, Fe2TiO5 nanoparticles were synthesized using a modified sol–gel method and evaluated as an enforcement of alginate food packaging film. Pure phase Fe2TiO5 nanoparticles had an average particle size of 44 nm and rhombohedral morphology. Fe2TiO5 nanoparticles induce no cell damage of human Caco-2 epithelial cells and show no inhibitory effect towards growth of a panel of bacterial strains, suggesting good biocompatibility. Films obtained by incorporation of Fe2TiO5 nanoparticles into alginate using the solvent casting method show no migration of iron or titanium ions from films to food simulants again suggesting their safety as a packaging material. Fe2TiO5 nanoparticles also showed strong antioxidant efficiency as determined using the DPPḢ assay, and confirmed further in a preservation test on fresh fruit.

AB - Micro- and nano-sized core-shell particles for efficient photocatalysis were successfully synthesized by a two step wet-chemical route. The core composed of up-converting (UC) NaYF4:Yb,Tm phase was prepared through EDTA assisted hydrothermal process, while the shell of anatase TiO2 –Acetylacetone (TiO2-Acac) charge-transfer complex was formed via a sol-gel method. During coating, the effect of polyvinylpyrrolidone (PVP) addition on the core and shell coupling was investigated. Two forms of core structures were obtained: hexagonal microprisms of beta-NaYF4:Yb,Tm and alpha-NaYF4:Yb,Tm nanospheres, both coated with TiO2-Acac nanocrystals.

AB - The newer methods of electric arc furnace dust (EAFD) valorisation include its stabilization into materials which potentially can be used in construction. This is the most promising method because of the low costs and waste reduction. The purpose of these study was to investigate the properties of alkali activated cement (AAC) based on fly ash (FA) or steelmaking electric arc furnace slag (EAFS) as an agent fora stabilization/solidification of EAFD. The control type of AAC samples were prepared by mixing of solid precursor (FA or EAFS) with a mixture of 10 M NaOH and Na2SiO3 solutions followed by curing at in the oven for 48 h at 65 C. The samples of AAC doped with EAFD were prepared at the same conditions but the EAFD was added to the starting mixtures with FA in quantities of 10, 20 and 30% of total solid phase and 1, 2, 5 and 7 % of total EAFS solid phase. The results have shown that both, FA and EAFS can be successfully used as an agent for EAFD stabilization. AAC samples based of FA and EAFS exhibited strength which is suitable for both, landfill and construction applications. Stabilization of EAFD into the AAC matrix occurred by chemical and physical immobilization. Chemical immobilization of Zn into the reaction product of FA and EAFS alkali activation was confirmed by SEM/EDS investigations. The leaching of Zn from both, AAC matrix based on FA and EAFS is inferior in comparison to pristine EAFD and met the criteria for granular waste disposal at landfills for non-hazardous waste according the EN 12457-2 test.

Two forms of core structures were obtained: hexagonal microprisms of -NaYF4:Yb,Tm and -NaYF4:Yb,Tm nanospheres, both coated with TiO2-Acac nanocrystals.

AB - Eco-friendly and rapid microwave processing of a precipitate was used to produce Fe-doped zinc oxide (Zn1−xFexO, x = 0, 0.05, 0.1, 0.15 and 0.20; ZnO:Fe) nanoparticles, which were tested as catalysts toward the oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) and oxygen evolution reaction (OER) in a moderately alkaline solution. The phase composition, crystal structure, morphology, textural properties, surface chemistry, optical properties and band structure were examined to comprehend the influence of Zn2+ partial substitution with Fe3+ on the catalytic activity of ZnO:Fe. Linear sweep voltammetry showed an improved catalytic activity of ZnO:5Fe toward the ORR, compared to pure ZnO, while with increased amounts of the Fe-dopant the activity decreased. The improvement was suggested by a more positive onset potential (0.394 V vs. RHE), current density (0.231 mA cm−2 at 0.150 V vs. RHE), and faster kinetics (Tafel slope, b = 248 mV dec−1), and it may be due to the synergistic effect of (1) a sufficient amount of surface oxygen vacancies, and (2) a certain amount of plate-like particles composed of crystallites with well developed (0001) and (000) facets. Quite the contrary, the OER study showed that the introduction of Fe3+ ions into the ZnO crystal structure resulted in enhanced catalytic activity of all ZnO:Fe samples, compared to pure ZnO, probably due to the modified binding energy and an optimized band structure. With the maximal current density of 1.066 mA cm−2 at 2.216 V vs. RHE, an onset potential of 1.856 V vs. RHE, and the smallest potential difference between the OER and ORR (ΔE = 1.58 V), ZnO:10Fe may be considered a promising bifunctional catalyst toward the OER/ORR in moderately alkaline solution. This study demonstrates that the electrocatalytic activity of ZnO:Fe strongly depends on the defect chemistry and consequently the band structure. Along with providing fundamental insight into the electrocatalytic activity of ZnO:Fe, the study also indicates an optimal stoichiometry for enhanced bifunctional activity toward the OER/ORR, compared to pure ZnO.

AB - The aim of this work was to synthesize semiconducting oxide nanoparticles using a simple method with low production cost to be applied in natural sunlight for photocatalytic degradation of pollutants in waste water. Iron titanate (Fe2TiO5) nanoparticles with an orthorhombic structure were successfully synthesized using a modified sol–gel method and calcination at 750°C. The as-prepared Fe2TiO5 nanoparticles exhibited a moderate specific surface area. The mesoporous Fe2TiO5 nanoparticles possessed strong absorption in the visible-light region and the band gap was estimated to be around 2.16 eV. The photocatalytic activity was evaluated by the degradation of methylene blue under natural sunlight. The effect of parameters such as the amount of catalyst, initial concentration of the dye and pH of the dye solution on the removal efficiency of methylene blue was investigated. Fe2TiO5 showed high degradation efficiency in a strong alkaline medium that can be the result of the facilitated formation of OH radicals due to an increased concentration of hydroxyl ions.

AB - Fe2TiO5 nanopartcles were synthesized by modified sol-gel method with aid of
Fe(NO3)3 9H2O and Ti(OC3H7)4 as starting reagents, oxalic acid as chilate agent and cetyltrimethylammonium bromide as surfactant. The aim of this study was to asses the photocatalytic degradaton of the antibiotic Oxytetracycline (OTC) using visible light irradiation. As prepared nanoparticles were characterized by XRD, BET, FESEM and UV-vis DRS. The optimal operating conditions of oxytetracycline photocatalytic degradation were achived by changing the pH of the solution and changing the concentration of photocatalyst.

AB - Pristine electric arc furnace slag (EAFS) as well as EAFS modified by alkali activation i.e. alkali activated slag (AAS) have found a novel application as adsorbents used in Cu2+ removal from sulfate solutions. The adsorption tests were carried in batch conditions and results have shown that alkali activation of EAFS enhances the Cu2+ adsorption. The adsorption process was found to follow a pseudo second-order kinetic model and occurs via formation of posnjakite (Cu4(SO4)(OH)6·H2O) on the surface of both, EAFS and AAS. Enhanced adsorption properties of AAS, compared to EAFS, are attributed to a more porous structure, larger specific surface area and an increased number of surface groups involved in the binding of Cu2+.

AB - ZnO nanopowders were produced using microwave processing of a precipitate and applied as a photoanode for photoelectrochemical water splitting. Two different surfactants, cetyltrimethylammonium bromide (CTAB) as the cationic and Pluronic F127 as the non-ionic one, were employed to in situ adjust the surface-to-bulk defect ratio in the ZnO crystal structure and further to modify the photo(electro)catalytic activity of the ZnO photoanode. The crystal structure, morphological, textural, optical and photo(electro)catalytic properties of ZnO particles were studied in detail to explain the profound effects of the surfactants on the photoanode activity. The ZnO/CTAB photoanode displayed the highest photocurrent density of 27 mA g−1, compared to ZnO (10.4 mA g−1) and ZnO/F127 photoanodes (20 mA g−1) at 1.5 V vs. SCE in 0.1 M Na2SO4 under visible illumination of 90 mW cm−2. A significant shift of the overpotential toward lower values was also observed when photoanodes were illuminated. The highest shift of the overpotential, from 1.296 to 0.248 V vs. SCE, was recorded when the ZnO/CTAB photanode was illuminated. The ZnO/CTAB photoanode provides efficient charge transfer across the electrode/electrolyte interface, with a longer lifetime of photogenerated electron–hole pairs and reduced possibility of charge recombination. The photoconversion efficiency was improved from 1.4% for ZnO and 0.9% for ZnO/F127 to 4.2% for ZnO/CTAB at 0.510 mV. A simple procedure for the synthesis of ZnO particles with improved photo(electro)catalytic properties was established and it was found that even a small amount of CTAB used during processing of ZnO increases the surface-to-bulk defect ratio. Optimization of the surface-to-bulk defect ratio in ZnO materials enables increase of the absorption capacity for visible light, rendering of the recombination rate of the photogenerated pair, as well as increase of both the photocurrent density and photoconversion efficiency.

AB - Zinc oxide is a semiconductor material which still, after a century of scientific research, shows great potential in modern day utilisements such as heterogenous photocatalysis of organic pollutants and as a photoanode material for efficient water splitting and oxygen generation. In this work zinc oxide was synthesized by a glycine-nitrate combustion process, which is a cheap, simple and efficient method for synthesizing transition metal oxides. The obtained powder was calcined at 400 and 500 °C and samples were characterized in detail using X-ray powder diffraction (XRPD), Fourier-trasform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), Raman spectroscopy, field emission scanning electron microscopy (FESEM), photoluminescence spectroscopy (PL) and UV-Vis diffuse reflectance spectroscopy (DRS). Photoelectrocatalytic properties were investigated via electrochemical methods: linear voltammetry (LV), chronoamperometry (CA) and impedance spectroscopy (EIS). The results show that the obtained samples are nanocrystalline wurtzite zinc oxide with no impurities, with average particle diameters of 33 nm (annealed at 400 °C) and 48 nm (annealed at 500 °C). Both samples show significant amounts of various crystal deffects. The determined zinc oxide band gap was lower than the band gap of bulk zinc oxide. Photoelectrochemical measurements revealed that this material is photostable and reactive to light. Water oxidation is enhanced by exposing the light. Finally, photocatalytic properties were tested via determining kinetic parameters of organic pollutant decomposition. Both samples showed excellent photocatalytic activity by decomposing methylene blue and phenol.

AB - The powder mixtures of calcium oxide (CaO) and silica gel (SiO2) in molar ratios of 1:1, 1.5:1, 2:1 and 3:1 were mechanochemically treated with the addition of water, and were subsequently calcined with a goal of synthesizing CaSiO3, Ca3Si2O7, Ca2SiO4 compounds and CaO/Ca2SiO4 two-phase mixture. The prepared materials were characterized by XRD, FTIR, SEM/EDS, particle size laser diffraction (PSLD), UV–vis diffuse reflectance spectroscopy (DRS), N2 adsorption/desorption isotherms, Hammett indicator for basic strength and volumetric analysis for free CaO content. The catalytic activity of calcium silicates with different Ca/Si ratios was tested in the transesterification of triacylglycerols (sunflower oil) with methanol. Samples obtained with initial composition 2CaO·SiO2 and 3CaO·SiO2 calcined at 700 °C, and 3CaO·SiO2 calcined at 900 °C had high catalytic activity, resulting with triacylglycerols conversion and fatty acids methyl ester formation (FAME or biodiesel) above 96%. The activity of these samples can be attributed to the existence of free CaO defined by CaO/Ca2SiO4 complex mixture. The effect of different amount of catalyst used for transesterification (0.2–2 wt%) was analyzed using the most active catalyst i.e. 3CaO·SiO2 calcined at 700 °C as well as possibility of its reuse for biodiesel synthesis. It was also found that CaSiO3, Ca3Si2O7 and Ca2SiO4, phases did not possess catalytic activity.

AB - Na0.44MnO2 synthesized by glycine-nitrate method (GNM) was described in
this paper and it was characterized by X-ray powder diffraction (XRD) and
field-emission scanning electron microscopy (FE-SEM). Electrochemical
performances of Na0.44MnO2 were studied by cycling voltammetry (CV) at
various scan rates in NaNO3 and LiNO3 aqueous solutions in order to
compare the intercalation/deintercalation kinetics of Li+ and Na+ ions. The
initial discharge capacity was found to be 27.1 and 27.44 in the aqueous
solution of NaNO3 and LiNO3, respectively, and after 30 cycles its values
increased for 12% in both electrolytes.

AB - The application of rechargeable batteries is growing significantly and it became the nlost important field for largescale electric energy storage. While lithiuln-ion batteries (LIBs) have great commercial success, due to their large energy and power density, their application was limited because of the availability of lithiunl and its high cost. Sodiunl-ion batteries (SIBs) can be a promissing alternative due to the huge availability of sodium, its low price and similar intercalating electrochelnistry to LIBs. Among various Na-ion battery materials, low-cost and tunnel-type, Na0.44Mn02 (NMO) was regarded as one of the most pronlising cathode materials for sodium-ion batteries, because of its high theoretical specific capacity (122 rnA h g1) and good cyclability [2]. In this work, for the synthesis of NMO powder, rapid glycine-nitrate nlethod (GNM) was used, which, on the basis of the literature review, has not been used to synthesize this material so far.

AB - One of the ways to get rid of toxic organic compounds that industries release into natural waters is photocatalysis of the decomposition of organic compounds on the surface of heterogenous photocatalysts such as zinc oxide. Zinc oxide is a semiconductor that interacts with UV and near-UV visible light by generating electron-hole pairs which decompose organic molecules. Therefore it is useful to explore different ways of synthesizing zinc oxide and to test quality and quantity of organic decomposition photocatalysis so as to enable the commercial use of the material. Zinc oxide is also a respectable material for use as a photoelectrocatalyst in water oxidation, for example, which can be useful for generating oxygen while using natural sunlight - a clean and abundant energy source. In this project nanocrystalline zinc oxide was synthesized by glycin-nitrate combustion process and the powder was annealed on temperatures of 400 °C and 500 °C. Obtained particles where characterized in detail using X-ray powder diffraction (XRPD), Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), Raman spectroscopy, field emission scanning microscopy (FESEM), photoluminescence spectroscopy (PL) and diffuse reflectance spectroscopy (DRS). The results show that obtained samples are nanocrystalline wurtzite zinc oxide, with particle diameters of 33 nm (annealed at 400 °C) ad 48 nm (annealed at 500 °C). Both samples show significant amount of various crystal defects. Zinc oxide band gap of the samples are determined to be lower than the band gap of the bulk zinc oxide. Photoelectrocatalytic properties were investigated via electrochemical methods: linear voltammetry (LV), chronoamperometry (CA) and impedance spectroscopy (EIS). The results show that material is photostable and reactive to the light. Water oxidation is enhanced by exposing to sunlight. Finally, photocatalytic properties are tested with determining kinetic parameters of phenole and methyl blue decomposition. Zinc oxide nanoparticles are efficient photocatalysts, although sample annealed at 500 °C shows better properties than sample annealed at 400 °C.

AB - The removal of heavy metals from wastewaters is presently a global imperative primarily due to their well-known toxic nature and detrimental effects on the environment, and more importantly, on human health. Currently, special attention is paid to the use of novel slag based materials – alkali activated slag (AAS) as potential novel adsorbents. Our previous studies have shown that electric arc furnace slag (EAFS) can be successfully used as a precursor for the production of AAS. Generally, alkaline activation involves a chemical reaction between solid aluminosilicate materials and a highly alkaline activator. The alkali activation mechanism of slag involves the dissolution of slag in a highly alkaline, which is followed by the condensation and hardening processes. Dependent on the pH and type of alkaline activator, calcium (alumina) silicate hydrate or C–(A)–S–H gel has been identified as a reaction product of slag alkali activation. The objective of this research was to investigate the removal of Cu2+ from aquatic solution using alkali activated slag (AAS) obtained by alkaline activation of EAFS.

AB - Mechanical milling of commercial ZnO and SnO2 was used to produce a ZnO/SnO2 composite with a high density of surface defects; in particular, zinc interstitials (Zni) and oxygen vacancies (VO). To determine the impact of surface defects on photocatalytic activity, the relative concentration ratio of bulk defects to surface defects was modified by annealing at 400 and 700 °C. The possible application of the ZnO/SnO2 composite as a natural sunlight and UV-light driven photocatalyst was revealed via de-colorization of methylene blue. In both cases the ZnO/SnO2 composite exhibited enhanced photocatalytic activity as compared to the pristine ZnO. In order to investigate the origin of the enhancement, the pristine metal oxides and composites were characterized using a variety of techniques, including X-ray diffraction (XRD), Raman and Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy, field emission scanning electron microscopy (FESEM), laser diffraction particle size analysis, Brunauer–Emmett–Teller, UV-Vis diffuse reflectance and photoluminescence spectroscopy. High-resolution transmission electron microscopy (HRTEM) and elemental mapping analyses were used to reveal the presence of SnO2 nanocrystallites on the surface of larger ZnO particles. The enhanced photocatalytic activity of the composite can be attributed to the synergetic effect of the surface defects and the ZnO/SnO2 heterojunction particles, which facilitated charge separation, thereby hindering the recombination of photogenerated carriers. This study draws attention to mechanical activation as an inexpensive and environmentally friendly technique for the large-scale production of the composite with an enhanced photocatalytic activity under illumination of either UV or sunlight.

AB - Geopolymeric binders (GB) were produced using fly ash (FA) and electric arc furnace slag (EAFS). The slag has been added in the range of 0–40%. The effects of slag content on the strength, microstructure and thermal resistance were evaluated. It was found that the amount of EAFS up to 30% positively affects the strength evolution of GB. The main reaction product of FA/EAFS blends was amorphous N–(C)–A–S–H gel along with geopolymer-type gel (N–A–S–H). Thermal resistance of GB was considered from the standpoint of their mechanical and dimensional stability after heating in the temperature interval of 600–800 °C. The changes in mechanical and thermal properties of GB after heating are attributed to the changes in their structure. The results have shown that EAFS negatively affects the thermal resistance of GB above 600 °C due to the phase transition and morphological transformation of the amorphous gel phase.
