AB - Poly(ε-caprolactone) (PCL) particles were prepared by physicochemical method with solvent/non-solvent systems. The synthetic polymer polyvinylpyrrolidone (PVP) and natural polymer poly(α,γ,l-glutamic acid) (PGA), were used as stabilizers and their influence on size and morphology of the particles was examined. The results were compared with those obtained without the use of stabilizers. This study evaluated, for the first time, PGA as stabilizer of PCL particles and demonstrated that PGA is more efficient stabilizer of PCL particles than most commonly used PVP. The particles obtained by using PGA as stabilizer were spherical, with smooth surfaces and dimensions below 1 μm. The drying conditions were also varied in order to examine their influence on the formation of PCL particles. The samples were characterized by Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy, scanning electron microscopy, particle size distribution (DLS) and zeta potential measurements.

AB - Poly-ε-caprolactone (PCL) is a semicrystalline, biodegradable and biocompatible polymer. Its advantages, as high permeability to small drug molecules, failure to generate an acidic environment during degradation (as compared to polylactides and polyglycolides) and a slow degradation rate, make this aliphatic polyester suitable for extended long-term delivery over a period of more than one year. In this study PCL particles were prepared by physicochemical method with solvent/nonsolvent systems. The synthetic polymer polyvinylpyrrolidone (PVP) and natural polymer poly (α, γ, L-glutamic acid) (PGA), were used as stabilizers and their influence on size and morphology of the particles was examined. The results were compared with those obtained without the use of stabilizers. Characterization of obtained particles was performed by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy. The morphology and size distribution were determined using SEM and particle analyzer.

AB - An ultrasound field was applied to obtain PLGA/HAp biocomposite nanospheres. Formulation of PLGA/HAp, composite revealed significant dependence of the morphology of the obtained composite on synthesis parameters, like the intensity of applied ultrasonic field, polymeric and ceramic parts wt.% ratio in the composite, temperature of the medium, type of surfactant, and the sequence of steps in the formation of PLGA/HAp. Optimal parameters for the formation of PLGA/HAp included a lower content of the ceramic phase (PLGA/HAp = 90: 10), higher power of ultrasonic field (P = 142.4 W), lower temperature of the medium during ultrasonic treatment (T = 8 degrees C), dilute solution of PVP as surfactant and dispersion of hydroxyapatite in polymer solution in order to achieve required homogeneity before the formulation of the composite. The morphology of PLGA/HAp particles synthesized under these conditions was highly regular: sphere-like, with particles of very small dimensions (150-320 nm), highly uniform particle size distribution and characteristic planar spatial self-organization. These characteristics indicate significant improvements in PLGA/HAp composite resulting from ultrasonic method. (C) 2008 Acta Materialia Inc. Published by Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

AB - Biodegradable polymers have become the materials of choice for a variety of
biomaterials applications. In particular poly (DL-lactide-co-glycolide) (DLPLG) nanoparticles
have been studied for controlled released drug delivery. In this paper we are describing new
method of obtaining the system for targeted and controlled delivery of the folic acid in the body.
Folic acid (pteroyl-L-glutamic acid, vitamin B9) is a water-soluble vitamin essential in the
human diet. It is an important cofactor in the synthesis of DNA and RNA, of dividing cells,
particularly during pregnancy and infancy when there is an increase in cell division and growth.
The DLPLG particles were obtained by chemical solvent/non-solvent method with PVP as a
surfactant. The obtained DLPLG particles are non-agglomerated, uniform and with particles size
in the submicron scale. The folic acid has been encapsulated into the polymer matrix by means
of homogenization of the water and organic phases. The concentration of the folic acid in the
water has been varied in order to obtain nanoparticles with different ratio of DLPLG and folic
acid. The samples were characterized by Infrared Spectroscopy (IR) and Scanning Electron
Microscopy (SEM).
