AB - An emerging technology of active packaging enables prolongation of food shelf life by limiting the oxygen transfer and the reactivity of free radicals, which both destruct food freshness. In this work, Fe2TiO5 nanoparticles were synthesized using a modified sol–gel method and evaluated as an enforcement of alginate food packaging film. Pure phase Fe2TiO5 nanoparticles had an average particle size of 44 nm and rhombohedral morphology. Fe2TiO5 nanoparticles induce no cell damage of human Caco-2 epithelial cells and show no inhibitory effect towards growth of a panel of bacterial strains, suggesting good biocompatibility. Films obtained by incorporation of Fe2TiO5 nanoparticles into alginate using the solvent casting method show no migration of iron or titanium ions from films to food simulants again suggesting their safety as a packaging material. Fe2TiO5 nanoparticles also showed strong antioxidant efficiency as determined using the DPPḢ assay, and confirmed further in a preservation test on fresh fruit.

AB - The aim of this work was to synthesize semiconducting oxide nanoparticles using a simple method with low production cost to be applied in natural sunlight for photocatalytic degradation of pollutants in waste water. Iron titanate (Fe2TiO5) nanoparticles with an orthorhombic structure were successfully synthesized using a modified sol–gel method and calcination at 750°C. The as-prepared Fe2TiO5 nanoparticles exhibited a moderate specific surface area. The mesoporous Fe2TiO5 nanoparticles possessed strong absorption in the visible-light region and the band gap was estimated to be around 2.16 eV. The photocatalytic activity was evaluated by the degradation of methylene blue under natural sunlight. The effect of parameters such as the amount of catalyst, initial concentration of the dye and pH of the dye solution on the removal efficiency of methylene blue was investigated. Fe2TiO5 showed high degradation efficiency in a strong alkaline medium that can be the result of the facilitated formation of OH radicals due to an increased concentration of hydroxyl ions.

AB - BiFeO3 powders were synthesized by sonochemically assisted hydrothermal and hydro-evaporation methods. The X-ray diffraction confirmed the presence of secondary phases, Bi25FeO39 and Bi2Fe4O9, in as prepared BiFeO3 powders. Optimization of sintering conditions indicated that temperature of 800 °C and time of 2 h after pressing at 9 t/cm2 provided ceramics samples with the highest density (up to 96% of theoretical density) and the lowest content of secondary phases. Ferroelectric and magnetic characterization was performed on two selected ceramics samples with the highest densities. Ceramics obtained from the powder synthesized by the hydrothermal method showed greater lattice distortion along [1 1 1] axis and smaller grains, which resulted in larger values of electric polarization at room temperature. It also exhibited less Fe(3d)–O(2p) orbital overlapping due to a larger FeOFe bond angle, causing lower antiferromagnetic ordering and weak ferromagnetic behavior at low temperatures.

AB - Spinel materials based on Mn and Ni has been intensively studied over the past years due to their excellent semiconductor properties. Nickel manganite as NTC thermistor is widely used today in different industrial sectors. Here we report the complex polymerization method (CPM) for producing nickel manganite fine particles with a homogeneous distribution of constituent cations in the crystal lattice that ensures formation of dense monophased ceramic with the novel magnetic properties after been sintered in oxygen and air atmosphere. Phase composition of the synthesized materials was examined by XRPD, while the morphology of the powder and microstructure of ceramic were investigated using FESEM and SEM analyses, respectively. The magnetic properties of the samples have been studied by measuring the temperature and field dependence of magnetization. Magnetic measurements of M(T) reveal rather complex magnetic properties and multiple magnetic phase transitions. In the case of air atmosphere we found three magnetic phase transitions with transition temperatures at TM1=35 K, TM2=101 K and TM3=120 K. TM1 maximum is strongly dependent on the strength of the applied magnetic field (TM1 decreases with increasing applied field) whereas the TM3 is field independent The values of the coercivity, remanent magnetization and saturation magnetization at 100 K are: HC = 184 Oe, Mr = 1.92 emu/g and MS = 7.88 emu/g, respectively. The measured values at 5 K are HC = 1035 Oe, Mr = 7.70 emu/g and MS = 14.47 emu/g. Moreover, hysteresis properties measured after cooling of the sample in magnetic field show exchange bias effect with an exchange bias field |HEB=196 Oe. For the sample synthetized in oxygen atmosphere, the magnetization dependence of temperature M(T) and AC susceptibility data obtained from SQUID measurements clearly demonstrates that quadruple magnetic phase transitions can be readily detected at TM1~115 K, TM2~105 K, TM3~38 K and TM4~7 K. These findings suggest the novel magnetic transition for nickel manganite at low temperature TM4. The temperatures of observed maximums in χ’(T) and χ’’(T) parts of susceptibility are frequency independent, whereas the height of the peaks decreases with increasing frequency. The fact that TM4 does not shift with the increase of the frequency led us to the conclusion that there are no spin-glass/surface effect and/or blocking temperature/finite size effect connected to the NiMn2O4 ceramic. Therefore, the low-temperature peak TM4 in AC susceptibility is associated with ferromagnetic-like and antiferromagnetic-like magnetic transition in the interfacial FM/AFM internal structure. The exchange bias effect was found in a field cooled hysteresis loops at 5 K. The field cooling of the sample was under a magnetic field of 100 Oe and 10 kOe whereas the determined exchange bias fields were |HEB|=129 Oe and 182 Oe, respectively. The analysis of the results and comparison with literature data allowed us to conjecture that the mixed oxidation states of Mn ions and ferromagnetic and antiferromagnetic sublattice orders tailor these interesting magnetic properties.

The analysis of the results and comparison with literature data allowed us to conjecture that the mixed oxidation states of Mn ions and ferromagnetic and antiferromagnetic sublattice orders tailor these interesting magnetic properties.",

The phase composition of the synthesized material was examined by x-ray powder diffraction (XRPD). Field-emission scanning electron microscopy (FE-SEM) was used to analyze the obtained powder morphology. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) was used to analyze the microstructure of sintered ceramics. The activation energy of conduction Ea and the coefficient of temperature sensitivity B25/100 were calculated from direct current (DC) resistivity measurements. AB - Multiferroic materials simultaneously possess two or more ferroic orders, and enable a coupling interaction between them. Multiferroic bismuth manganite is known as a material that exhibits both ferromagnetic and ferroelectric properties making it interesting for various technological applications. Unfortunately, preparation of BiMnO3 is not possible by conventional solid state reaction and BiMnO3 has been synthesized from the mixture of oxides only at high pressures (>40 kbar). The aim of this work was to synthesize BiMnO3 (BMO) without additional heating or application of high pressures. Nanocrystalline single-phased BMnO3 was prepared for the first time by mechanochemical synthesis directly from the highly activated constituent oxides, Bi2O3 and Mn2O3, in a planetary ball mill. The obtained materials were characterized by X-ray diffraction, SEM with EDS analysis, HRTEM and magnetization measurements. All the samples were found to be tetragonal perovskite with P4mm crystallographic group. The broad maxima reflections of BMO samples can be ascribed to an amorphous/disordered phase. HRTEM micrographs give clear evidence of core-shell structure with amorphous shell around the nanocrystalline BMO particles. The magnetic hysteresis behavior is similar to that of a soft ferromagnet. The magnetic properties of the obtained BMO powders were found to change as a function of milling time in a manner consistent with the variation in the nanocomposite microstructure.

AB - In order to obtain nanocrystalline material which can be used in MLCC production, the investigations of the influence of BaTiO3 powder tribophysical activation (TPA) on its structural changes, dielectric and ferroelectric properties have been performed. Microstructure development and crystal structure have been studied by mercury porosimetry method, SEM, EDS and X-ray powder diffraction analyses. The modifications of dielectric and ferroelectric properties of sintered samples have been examined and correlated with observed structural changes induced by TPA of starting powders. It has been found that dielectric and ferroelectric properties of tribophysically activated BaTiO3 could be tuned by controlling the grain size and lattice strain of activated nanostructured material.

AB - Extra phase-pure Li4Ti5O12 spinel with particle sizes less than 500 nm was synthesized by solid state reaction of mechanochemicaly activated mixture of nano anatase and Li2CO3 for a very short annealing time, 4 h at 800°C. Structural and microstructural properties, the mechanism of solid state reaction between anatase and Li2CO3 as well as thermal stability of prepared spinel were investigated using XRPD, SEM and TG/DSC analysis. The mechanism of reaction implies decomposition of Li2CO3 below 250ºC, formation of monoclinic Li2TiO3 as intermediate product between 400 and 600°C and its transformation to Li4Ti5O12 between 600-800ºC. The spinel structure is stable up to 1000ºC when it is decomposed due to Li2O evaporation.

AB - Multiferroic yttrium manganite (YMnO3) is known as a material that exhibits both ferromagnetic and ferroelectric properties making it interesting for various technological applications. In this work single-phased YMnO3 was prepared for the first time by mechanochemical synthesis in a planetary ball mill. The YMnO3 can be formed directly from the highly activated constituent oxides, Y2O3 and Mn2O3, after 60 min of milling time and subsequently grows during prolonged milling. The cumulative energy introduced into the system during milling for 60 min was 86 kJ/g. X-ray analysis indicates that the as-prepared samples crystallize majority with hexagonal (P63cm) and minorly with orthorhombic (Pnma) YMnO3 structure. The morphology, structure and chemical composition of the powder were investigated by SEM with EDS and TEM. The magnetic properties of the obtained YMnO3 powders were found to change as a function of milling time in a manner consistent with the variation in the nanocomposite microstructure.

AB - A single crystal Bi0.9Sb0.1 ingot was synthesized using the Bridgman technique. Thermal diffusivity and electronic transport properties of single crystal cleaved plates (00l) were determined from PA photoacoustic phase and amplitude spectra obtained using the photoacoustic method with a transmission detection configuration. Both the PA phase and amplitude were measured versus the modulation frequency and numerically analyzed. EDS analyses done to determine chemical composition of the studied samples as well as to check sample homogeneity. Hall effect measurements data were used for the photoacustic measurements.

AB - Multiferroic bismuth manganite (BiMnO3) is known as a material that exhibits both ferromagnetic and ferroelectric properties making it interesting for various technological applications. Unfortunately, preparation of BiMnO3 is not possible by a conventional solid-state reaction and it can form only from mixture of oxides at high pressures (>40 kbar). In this work single-phased BiMnO3 was prepared for the first time by mechanochemical synthesis in a planetary ball mill. A mixture of Bi2O3 and Mn2O3 was intensively milled in air atmosphere, using stainless steel vials and balls. According to analysis of XPRD results BiMnO3 obtained after milling for 240 min has a tetragonal structure with lattice parameters a = 3.9230 Å, c = 3.920 Å and a crystallite size of 16.8 nm. The cumulative energy introduced into the system during milling for 240 min was 401 kJ/g. It was found that the obtained powders were agglomerated. Corresponding agglomeration factors were calculated from the results of BET and particle size distribution analysis. © 2009 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

AB - Ceramic materials with a perovskite related structures such as non-doped and doped barium titanate ceramics are attracting much interest for their application as capacitor dielectrics, resistors, thermal sensors, etc. Since mechanical activation can be used in order to modify properties of these materials, in this study microstructure evolution and electric properties of mechanically activated BaTiO3 have been analyzed. The sintering process of high purity non-doped mechanically activated BaTiO3 was monitored using a sensitive dilatometer with a heating rate of 10 degrees C/min. Investigation of the microstructure evolution of mechanically activated BaTiO3 was performed using scanning electron microscope (SEM) and digital pattern recognition (DPR) methods. A dielectric study of the paraelectric-ferroelectric phase transition in the barium titanate ceramics was performed by recording the temperature dependence of dielectric permittivity.
