Archival material on forming of the Yugoslav state from 1914–1918 which
is kept in the Archive of Serbia is mainly of diplomatic nature and is mainly in
collections Ministry of Foreign Aff airs of the Kingdom of Serbia and Serbian
diplomatic missions, because the Yugoslav unifi cation was an international
question. Beside this material, smaller part of documents on the Yugoslav program
of the Serbian government is kept in other collections of the Archive of Serbia.
Th rough this material, it is possible to track how the Serbian government
was executing its policy of the Yugoslav unifi cation during the World War I. It is
also possible to see the main challenges it faced in materialization of that goal,
such as: territorial compensations to Bulgaria in Macedonia, secret negotiations
of the Entante with Italy and question of the eastern Adriatic coast, demarcation
with Romania in Banat, military defeat of Serbia and Montenegro at the end of
1915 and decision to continue the war together with the allies, relations with
Montenegro and the Montenegrin court, relations with representatives of other
Yugoslav peoples and war plans of the Entante members.
Because of the dangers of aggressive Austria-Hungarian politics, Yugoslav
program of Serbian government was based on the idea that it was necessary
to create a strong state which would preserve peace in the Balkans and in the
Europe, and prevent German breakthrough to the Southeast Europe and the Near
East. Such a state would be formed by unifi cation of all South Slavs, on whose
relationship an ideology had already been created, and Serbian government
involved intellectuals from Serbia and from other South Slav peoples in the creation
of this program. As per this program of Serbian government, the unifi cation can
be realized by gathering of all South Slavs around Serbia, with active cooperation
with Montenegro and representative of other Yugoslav peoples.
Th e longer the war lasted, the more was Serbian history (especially aft er the
military defeat in autumn 1915) connected with history of other Yugoslav peoples
within framework of Yugoslav movement, and, as Andrej Mitrović noted in his
work Serbia in the World War I, “since then, it became practically impossible to
separate Serbia and Serbs from the whole of the Yugoslav movement.",
