AB - In the process of predicting materials properties, it is necessary to predict microstructures. This is important for ceramic materials, for the purpose of miniaturization and for a higher level of integration. Although the method of material structure reconstruction is for the first time used on BaTiO3-ceramics by these authors, it can also be used for silicate, refractory and other ceramics, and, for any powder-based material. The reconstruction is based on the grain perimeter fractal analysis and the Richardson method. The main contribution of this paper is establishing the relationship between the electronic properties of BaTiO3-ceramics and its microstructural fractal nature. Similar relations can be used for any ceramics or even any materials. The samples consolidation includes both powder pressing (cold sintering phase) and sintering in a furnace (hot sintering phase). The fractal nature characterization has a very important role from the powder phase up to the final microstructure, through which structures it directly impacts electro-physical and other ceramics properties. Thereby, the new possibilities in the microstructure characterization applications are directly introduced to an engineering system, providing the new solutions related to computer aided support. This creates new industrial production and application possibilities, especially in the process of ceramics material consolidation, now based on microstructural properties, which is providing a basis for “fractal electronics’’ development. © 2018 Elsevier Ltd

AB - The purpose of this paper is an investigation of the effects of various dopants (La, Nb, Sb) on the microstructure properties, phase composition and contact surface of BaTiO3 based ceramics. The doped BaTiO3-ceramics were prepared by conventional solid state procedure and sintered up to 1350oC for four hours. The concentration of additive were range from 0.1 to 5.0 at% of La, Nb or Sb. The grain size and microstructure characteristics for various samples and their phase composition was carried out using a scanning electron microscope SEM (JEOL-JSM 5300) equipped with EDS (QX 2000S) system. The homogeneous and completely fine-grained was observed in samples doped with low concentration of dopant (0.1 and 0.5 at %). EDS analysis of this samples did not reveal any dopant-rich regions, which indicated a uniform incorporation of dopants within the samples. In high doped samples, apart from the fine grained matrix, the appearance of local area with secondary abnormal grains was observed. The increase of dopant concentration leads to the appearance of dopant-rich regions between grains.

AB - Large part of powder based materials; especially ceramics are porous in more or less percentage. For such materials, two separated spaces are present. The “positive” space is made by grains or particles, while the “negative” space is “reserved” for pores. Formally speaking, the bulk of material space, V can be written as an union of “positive” and “negative” space which otherwise have no common points. Pores and grains share same surfaces, and since grains have fractal nature, with fractal interior and fractal boundary surfaces, the pores also have fractal “walls”. This implies two conclusions: the pores should be treated as the fractal objects, i.e., the objects having non-fractal interior, and fractal surface with dimension equal to grain’s fractal dimension. Suppose that the morphology of materials changes through time for the consideration process. By box counting methods fractal dimension definition, it follows that three sintering phase formulae based on the union described above, the sintering initial phase, the Frenkel formula takes corrected form including fractal dimension value. In this paper we applied four methods: Cube counting, Triangulation, Variance and Power spectrum method. All of these are very important and quite a different then the other, Ceramic Characterization Classic methods, what is opening new frontiers in material science characterization.

AB - Implantation of a biomaterial is one of the important trends in solving the problem of bone tissue loss. Calcium hydroxiapatite (HAp), as the most representative bone component is a serious candidate for such implantations. The synthetic polymer poly-L-lactide (PLLA) in HAp/PLLA is often used as a polymeric material, with a role in the substitution of bone tissue collagen fibers. Fibers of PLLA may strengthen HAp and its good bioresorption provides space for tissue remodeling. Differences in porosity, microstructure, compressive consistency as well as bioresorbility of HAp/PLLA may be achieved by using PLLA with different molecular weights. In this study HAp/PLLA composites with PLLA of different molecular weights (50,000; 160,000 and 430,000) were implanted in mouse peritoneum in order to examine the influence of the molecular weight of PLLA on morphology changes. Microstructural changes of biomaterial (HAp/PLLA) surface were analyzed one week, three weeks and four months after their implantation using Scanning Electron Microscopy. The results showed a significant difference in tissue reactions on the applied biocomposites, depending on their molecular weight. The most intense proliferation of cells was induced by HAp/PLLA 50,000 compared to HAp/PLLA 430,000 and HAp/PLLA 160,000. In the vicinity of HAp/PLLA 430,000 abundant erythrocytes were observed. The differences in biological reactions on the examined biocomposites are significant for their practical applications. HAp/PLLA composite biomaterials of different types and resorption rates require specific designing and programming to become suitable for particular purposes in an organism.

AB - In most concretes, aggregates are more or less chemically inert. However, some aggregates react with the alkali hydroxides in concrete, causing expansion and cracking over a period of many years. This alkali-aggregate reaction has two forms: alkali-silica reaction (ASR) and alkali-carbonate reaction (ACR). ASR is the most common form of alkali-aggregate reaction (AAR) in concrete; the other, much less common, form is alkali-carbonate reaction (ACR). If the aggregate is shown to be potentially reactive by the tests, some mitigation measure must be used to control the expansion and cracking. Alkali-silica reaction can be controlled using certain supplementary cementitious materials.

AB - Recent developments in bone tissue engineering have led to an increased interest in one-dimensional (1D) hydroxyapatite (HA) nano- and micro-structures such as wires, ribbons and tubes. They have been proposed for use as cell substrates, reinforcing phases in composites and carriers for biologically active substances. Here we demonstrate the synthesis of 1D HA structures using an optimized, urea-assisted, high-yield hydrothermal batch process. The one-pot process, yielding HA structures composed of bundles of ribbons and wires, was typified by the simultaneous occurrence of a multitude of intermediate reactions, failing to meet the uniformity criteria over particle morphology and size. To overcome these issues, the preparation procedure was divided to two stages: dicalcium phosphate platelets synthesized in the first step were used as a precursor for the synthesis of 1D HA in the second stage. Despite the elongated particle morphologies, both the precursor and the final product exhibited excellent biocompatibility and caused no reduction of viability when tested against osteoblastic MC3T3-E1 cells in 2D culture up to the concentration of 2.6 mg/cm2. X-ray powder diffraction combined with a range of electron microscopies and laser diffraction analyses was used to elucidate the formation mechanism and the microstructure of the final particles. The two-step synthesis involved a more direct transformation of DCP to 1D HA with the average diameter of 37 nm and the aspect ratio exceeding 100:1. The comparison of crystalline domain sizes along different crystallographic directions showed no signs of significant anisotropy, while indicating that individual nanowires are ordered in bundles in the b crystallographic direction of the P63/m space group of HA. Intermediate processes, e.g., dehydration of dicalcium phosphate, are critical for the formation of 1D HA alongside other key aspects of this phase transformation, it must be investigated in more detail in the continuous design of smart HA micro- and nano-structures with advanced therapeutic potentials.

abstract = "Recent developments in bone tissue engineering have led to an increased interest in one-dimensional (1D) hydroxyapatite (HA) nano- and micro-structures such as wires, ribbons and tubes. Intermediate processes, e.g., dehydration of dicalcium phosphate, are critical for the formation of 1D HA alongside other key aspects of this phase transformation, it must be investigated in more detail in the continuous design of smart HA micro- and nano-structures with advanced therapeutic potentials.",

AB - The new correlation between microstructure and dielectric properties of doped BaTiO3-ceramics based on fractal geometry and contact surface probability has been developed. The doped BaTiO3-ceramics using in this investigation has been prepared by a conventional solid state reaction. The content of additive oxides, Ho2O3, are ranged from 0.05 to 1.0 at%. The samples were sintered at 1320° and 1350°C for two hours with heating rate of 300oC/h in the air atmosphere. The microstructures of the as sintered or chemically etched samples were observed by using scanning electronic microscope JEOL-JSM 5300 equipped with energy dispersive spectrometry EDS (QX 2000S) system. By using the fractal analysis and statistics methods of the grains contact surface, a reconstruction of microstructure configurations, like grains shapes, or intergranular contacts has been successfully done. The presented results indicate that fractals analysis and statistics model of different shapes of contact surfaces are very important for prognosis of BaTiO3-ceramics microstructure and dielectric properties. The morphology of sintered BaTiO3-ceramics grains points out the validity of developing new structure analytical methods based on different geometries of grains' model systems. The grains contact models based on ellipsoidal geometry is presented as a new modeling tool for structure research of BaTiO3-ceramics materials. The directions of possible materials properties prognosis are determined according to the correlations synthesis-structure-property.

AB - Ceramics grain structure is difficult to describe by using traditional analytical methods based on Euclidean geometry. Using the fractal geometric/analytic methods instead, the new approach is offered in this paper. There are a many materials that can be doped to BaTiO3, in order to gain different characteristics and in this study we are using Ho2O3. Different concentrations has been used, as well as different sintering temperatures. For selected contacted grains, the SEM (Scanning Electron Microscope) pictures are taken providing suitable configuration for an electrical model study. It is shown that ferroelectric, optoelectric and piezoelectric properties, are influenced by fractal structure of grains and intergrains contacts, distribution of pores and inner dynamics during sintering process. Nowadays the material science is aware of importance of taking fractal properties of different ceramics and a new analytic and numerical models are suggested. The similar behavior is discovered in thin films and nano technologies as well.

The similar behavior is discovered in thin films and nano technologies as well.",

AB - An influence of dopant concentration on microstructure and dielectric properties of doped BaTiO3-ceramics is developed based on fractal geometry. Using different technological parameters and different additives the structure of BaTiO3 based ceramics materials can be controlled. In this research, BaTiO3 samples with different concentration of Ho2O3 are used. The ratio of dopant concentration ranges from 0.05% to 1%. The sintering temperature of 1350°C is chosen. Selected specimens of BaTiO3 were documented using SEM (Scanning Electron Microscope) equipped with EDS analysis. As it is expected, the influence of impurities on intergranular capacity and other electrical properties is significant which is demonstrated and confirmed in this paper. Using the method of fractal modeling, a reconstruction of microstructure configurations, like grains shapes or intergranular contacts is performed. Such interdisciplinary research is important for opening new frontiers in electronics, and give us a fine perspective in dielectric materials. A merit of such perspective is definition of a bond between microelectronics and materials and components made for sensors and actuators.

AB - 1D hydroxyapatite nanostructures such as nanotubes, ultra long nanowires and other morphological varieties have been promising material for bone reconstruction and therapy. Advantages like high specific surface, packing properties and mechanical properties make those nanostructures excellent candidates for scaffolds. This work is focused on soft hydrothermal routes for preparing different 1D nanostructures. Using hydroxyapatite formation mechanisms in hydrothermal and solvothermal systems, various chemical parameters, i.e. precursor chemical composition, are investigated for obtaining these 1D materials on gram scale. The synthesized materials are characterized by X – ray diffraction, scanning electron microscopy and laser diffraction methods.

AB - The Er doped BaTiO3 ceramics, with different Er2O3 content, ranging from 0.01 to 1.0 wt% Er, were investigated regarding their microstructural and dielectric characteristics in this paper. Doped BaTiO3 were prepared by using conventional method of solid state sintering at 1380 °C for four hours. SEM analysis of Er/BaTiO3 doped ceramics showed that in samples doped with a rareearth ions low level, the grain size ranged from 20-40 μm, while with the higher dopant concentration the abnormal grain growth is inhibited and the grain size ranged between 2-10μm. Dielectric measurements were carried out as a function of temperature up to180°C at different frequencies. The low doped samples sintered at 1380 °C, display the high value of dielectric permittivity at room temperature, 2160 for 0.01 Er/BaTiO3. A nearly flat permittivity-response was obtained in specimens with higher additive content. Using a Curie-Weiss low and modified Curie-Weiss low the Curie constant C, Curie temperature Tc and a critical exponent of nonlinearity γ were calculated. The Curie temperature of doped samples were ranged from 126 to 130 °C. The Curie constant for all series of samples decrease with increase of dopant concentration and the lowest values were mesured from samples doped with 0.01 wt% of aditive. The obtained value of γ pointed out that the specimens have almost sharp phase transition.

AB - The materials based on BaTiO3 can be controlled using different technological parameters and different additives. We investigate the influence of different temperature levels of sintering (1320°C, 1350°C and 1380°C) on the size of contact area for 0.1% Ho2O3 doped BaTiO3 ceramic. Microstructural investigations were carried out using scanning electron microscopy (JEOL-JSM 5300) equipped with EDS (QX 2000S) system. Grain size distribution was determined by quantitative metallography method. The new correlation between microstructure and dielectric properties of doped BaTiO3-ceramics based on fractal geometry and contact surface probability is recently developed. The presented results indicate that statistical model of contact surfaces is very important for the prognosis of BaTiO3-ceramics microstructure and dielectric properties.

AB - Doped BaTiO3-ceramics is very interesting for its application as resistors with PTCR, multilayer ceramics capacitors, thermal sensors etc. Ho doped BaTiO3 ceramics, with different Ho2O3 content, ranging from 0.01 to 1.0 wt% Ho, were investigated regarding their microstructural and dielectric characteristics. The samples were prepared by the conventional solid state reaction and sintered at 1320°, 1350 °C and 1380°C in an air atmosphere for 4 hours. The grain size and microstructure characteristics for various samples and their phase composition were carried out using a scanning electron microscope SEM equipped with EDS system. SEM analysis of Ho/BaTiO3 doped ceramics showed that in samples doped with a low level of rare-earth ions, the grain size ranged from 10-40mm, while with the higher dopant concentration the abnormal grain growth is inhibited and the grain size ranged between 2-10μm. Dielectric measurements were carried out as a function of temperature up to180°C. The low doped samples sintered at 1380°C, display the high value of dielectric permittivity at room temperature, 2500 for 0.01Ho/BaTiO3. A nearly flat permittivity-response was obtained in specimens with higher additive content. Using a modified Curie-Weiss low the Curie constant (C/) and a critical exponent γ were calculated. The obtained values of γ pointed out the diffuse phase transformation in heavily doped BaTiO3 samples.

AB - Simulated body fluid (SBF) is an artificial fluid which has ionic composition and ionic concentration similar to human blood plasma. Purpose: This paper compares the interaction between the nanomaterial containing calcium phosphate/poly-dl-lactide-co-glycolide (N-CP/PLGA) and SBF, in order to investigate whether and to what extent inorganic ionic composition of human blood plasma leads to the aforementioned changes in the material. Methods: N-CP/PLGA was incubated for 1, 2, 3, and 5 weeks in SBF. The surface of the material was analyzed on SEM-EDS and FTIR spectrometer, while SBF was subjected to pH and electrical conductivity measurement. Results: Our results indicate that dissolution of the polymer component of the material N-CP/PLGA and precipitation of the material similar to hydroxyapatite on its surface are based on the morphologic changes seen in this material. Conclusions: The mechanism of the apatite formation on the bioceramic surface was intensively studied and was considered crucial in designing the new biomaterials. The results obtained in this work indicate that N-CP/PLGA may be a good candidate for application to bone regeneration.

AB - The purpose of biomaterials is to replace a part or a function of the body in a safe, physiologically and economically acceptable way. The process of the reconstruction of bone defects has always been a big problem in orthopedics and maxillofacial surgery. Since hydroxyapatite (HAp) was detected as a component, the predominant constituent and the integral element of Mammalian bones, the development of the phospate ceramics as potential materials for implantation was enabled. This study investigated whether and in which way biomaterial calcium hydroxyapatite/poly-L-lactide (HAp/PLLA) interacts with the ionic composition of the human plasma. The simulated body fluid (SBF) is an artificial fluid that has the ionic composition and ionic concentration similar to the human blood plasma. HAp/PLLA was incubated for 1, 2, 3 and 5 weeks in SBF. The surfaces of both treated and untreated materials were analyzed on a scanning electron microscopy (SEM), and were also exposed to the energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDS), while SBF was submitted to the measuring of pH and electrical conductivity. However, our results indicate that the degradational changes of the material HAp/PLLA in SBF start from the surface of the treated material and that observed changes are the consequence of dissolution of its polymer component and the precipitation of the material similar to hydroxyapatite on its surface. This material shows good characteristics that place it among good candidates for the application in orthopedics and maxillofacial surgery.

AB - In this article, ytterbium and erbium oxides are used as doping materials for barium titanate (BaTiO3) materials. The amphoteric behavior of these rare-earth ions leads to the increase of dielectric permittivity and decrease of dielectric losses. BaTiO3 ceramics doped with 0.01-0.5 wt% of Yb2O3 and Er2O3 were prepared by conventional solid-state procedure and sintered at 1320°C for 4 h. In BaTiO3 doped with a low content of rare-earth ions (0.01 wt%) the grain size ranged between 10 and 25 μm. With the higher dopant concentration of 0.5 wt%, the abnormal grain growth is inhibited and the grain size ranged between 2 and 10 μm. The measurements of capacitance and dielectric losses as a function of frequency and temperature have been carried out in order to correlate the microstructure and dielectric properties of doped BaTiO 3 ceramics. The temperature dependence of the dielectric constant as a function of dopant amount has been investigated. © 2009 The American Ceramic Society.

abstract = "In this article, ytterbium and erbium oxides are used as doping materials for barium titanate (BaTiO3) materials. AB - In this study, a correlation between densification, microstructure, and electrical properties of BaTiO3 (BT) ceramics prepared from ultrasonically de-agglomerated BT powders has been analyzed. BT powders with the same crystal structure (tetragonal) and stoichiometry, but with different average particle size, were used to prepare sintered ceramics. Densification and electrical properties of the sintered BT ceramics were correlated to the average particle size of the powders. It was found that a decrease in average particle size improved the densification process as well as the ceramics' microstructure. The impedance measurements were done up to 320°C in order to separate grain (bulk) and grain boundary contributions. Bulk resistance was more or less the same, independent on the average particle size of the powder. On the contrary, grain boundary resistance increased with decreasing average particle size of the powder.
