Upravo njihovi (pra)unici i (pra)unuke čine
treću i četvrtu generaciju.
tokom 2020. godine pokažemo prisutne oblike identifikacije pripadnika treće i četvrte
generacije potomaka srpskih radnih migranata.
procese integracije i transnacionalnih veza naše ciljne grupe. Zbog vanrednog stanja
izazvanog pandemijom korona virusa, istraživanje je sprovedeno anketno i online uz
pomoć Google upitnika, dok je uzorkovanje bilo neprobabilističko i eksponencijalno
nediskriminativno.
AB - This paper focuses on the integration of the third and fourth generations of
descendants of Serbian migrant workers residing in Vienna, Austria. This immigrant
community emerged as a result of the influx of Serbian guest workers who
have been moving to Austria for temporary employment since the end of World
War II. The third and fourth generations consist of their (great) grandchildren.
The objective of this study is to examine the current state of their integration,
based on the findings of research undertaken in 2020. Somehow paradoxically,
we explore the following research question: to what extent are the third and
fourth generation descendants of migrants, who were born and raised in Austria,
integrated into the socio-cultural and political system of Austria, given that they
are still perceived as ‘persons of migrant origin’?
In this study, we re-evaluate the concept of integration, which tends to essentialise
national identity, and emphasise the dynamic nature of the integration
process and the transnational connections of our target group. Due to the
COVID-19 pandemic and the resulting state of emergency, the research was
conducted online using Google surveys. We employed non-probabilistic and
exponentially non-discriminatory sampling, utilising the ‘snowball’ sampling
approach. A total of 73 individuals participated in the survey, which comprised 12 sections with 70 open and closed questions. Of the participants, 43.8% were
men, 50.68% women, and 5.47% did not declare their gender.
We adopted four criteria under which to analyse the integration processes
based on the collected data and the responses of our respondents: cultural,
structural, social, and emotional. The cultural factor refers to the acquisition
of knowledge and skills, such as language proficiency and understanding of
social norms. Structural integration involves the positioning and participation
of migrants in key aspects of the host society, particularly the job market. Social
integration encompasses interactions and connections with the local community
and other groups, including marriage, friendships, and interactions beyond
one’s own ethnic group. Lastly, emotional integration relates to elements of
identification, a sense of belonging, and the various ways in which immigrants
maintain connections with their own cultural group.
We view integration as a dynamic and interactive phenomenon influenced
by three parties: the country of origin (Serbia), the immigrants themselves, and
their descendants. Thus, we investigate all three factors, while frequently highlighting
intergenerational disparities in the integration process. In addition to the
concept of integration, we incorporate contemporary interpretations of transnationality
in this study, demonstrating that even members of the third and fourth
generations of Serbian labour migrants maintain strong cultural ties and utilise
cultural elements from both their ancestors’ country of origin (Serbia) and the
country in which they were born and raised (Austria). Ultimately, we conclude
that they are equally integrated into both the Serbian immigrant population in
Austria and the society of their origin country, while maintaining significant
transnational and emotional connections with Serbia.

AB - Serbia has traditionally been a country with a high emigration rate. Numerous administrative obstacles and slow economic reforms have discouraged migrants from returning and making business investments. Over the last few years there has been a noticeable effort to provide concrete assistance, introduce benefits and reliefs and stimulate return migrations, particularly of entrepreneurs and highly educated persons, by means of different strategies, legal acts, and the establishment of government agencies and non-governmental organizations.

Our decade-long research on migrations has primarily focused on the so-called Gastarbeiter, as well as their descendants. We have conducted research on migrants from North-eastern Serbia, which is one of the biggest emigration zones in the country, and field research was also conducted in Vienna, the city with the most numerous Serbian diaspora in Europe, a specific population which, due to the geographic proximity between Serbia and Austria, often engages in cross-border movement and is transnationally active. As regards the studied population, return migrations to Serbia and economic investment in the country’s development are unlikely and certainly insufficient. In this paper, we will look at the classification of returnees as at their motives for a possible return, but also at the numerous reasons for staying in the host country.
povratne migracije, posebno preduzetnika i visoko obrazovanih osoba.

AB - This review paper provides an overview of the ten-year long anthropological research on the cultural identity of guest workers and their descendants as part of the projects implemented by the associates of the Department of Ethnology and Anthropology of the Faculty of Philosophy, University of Belgrade and the SASA Institute of Ethnography. The projects were supported by the Serbian Ethnological and Anthropological Society and the Faculty of Philosophy in Belgrade. The phenomenon of “temporary workers abroad”, or the so-called guest workers (Gastarbeiter), which emerged in the early 1960s and continued in the decades to come, has long remained beyond the interest of Serbian anthropological and ethnological science. This is why, after having noticed a scientific research gap related to this phenomenon, in 2010 we initiated the anthropological research of the cultural identity of guest workers. Our intention was to take into account different factors of guest-worker identity construction and to look at the processes, discourses and concepts related to this socio-cultural group from different angles. Over time, as we delved deeper into the problem of migrant workers and migration in general, our interests, and consequently our research, expanded to other topics in addition to cultural identity. In that context, this review paper intends to inform the scientific and professional public about the findings of research on migrants working temporarily abroad and their descendants, and to highlight some of the most important topics that we focused on in this research, while being aware that the phenomenon of migrants and migration is so diverse that it is impossible to include or investigate all its elements that make it so complex.

abstract = "This review paper provides an overview of the ten-year long anthropological research on the cultural identity of guest workers and their descendants as part of the projects implemented by the associates of the Department of Ethnology and Anthropology of the Faculty of Philosophy, University of Belgrade and the SASA Institute of Ethnography. In that context, this review paper intends to inform the scientific and professional public about the findings of research on migrants working temporarily abroad and their descendants, and to highlight some of the most important topics that we focused on in this research, while being aware that the phenomenon of migrants and migration is so diverse that it is impossible to include or investigate all its elements that make it so complex., Ovaj pregledni rad nudi presek desetogodišnjih antropoloških istraživanja kulturnog identiteta gastarbajtera i njihovih potomaka kroz projekte koji su realizovali saradnici Odeljenja za etnologiju i antropologiju Filozofskog fakulteta Univerziteta u Beogradu i Etnografskog instituta SANU.

AB - This paper is the result of work on the project “A Study of Awareness and Preservation of Intangible Cultural Heritage Among Young People in Serbia and the Diaspora” carried out in 2019. In view of the UNESCO recommendations that young people should be educated about the importance of cultural heritage as they are the key population in the process of its further preservation, the project was conceived with the aim of conducting a survey on the awareness of young people in Serbia and the diaspora of elements of intangible cultural heritage (ICH) protected in the National Register of ICH of the Republic of Serbia. A target group for the study was selected using the technique of nonprobability sampling, composed of a convenience sample of young people who are members of cultural societies in Novi Sad, Zrenjanin, Užice, Kraljevo and Niš, and also of third-generation Serbian immigrants in Vienna, Paris and Calgary who are members of Serbian cultural societies in these cities. Taking into account the fact that in cultural societies certain elements of ICH are practiced and learned, the hypothesis was that the target group would serve as a good indicator of the degree of awareness of protected elements of ICH on the national list, as most protected elements constitute rare customs. Related to this is the fundamental analytical question, namely, who does the ICH National List serve and who should be aware of the protected rare elements of intangible cultural heritage, to what degree and why. The research instrument used was a questionnaire with open-ended questions, and the data thus collected were consequently supplemented through interviews. Ten elements were selected from the ICH National List. 66 completed questionnaires were collected, 33 from Serbia and 33 from the diaspora. An analysis of the replies suggests that the degree of awareness among young people of ICH is relatively low.

AB - In the last twenty years, several cultural and educational organizations developed amongst
the Serbian migrants in Vienna, and they engage in presenting modern day Serbian culture and the lives of migrants in a different light and with a different approach than some other
clubs of our former migrants. The goal we have set with this study is to present just one
segment of these activities, and those are the amateur theater plays that our migrants take
part in playing themselves and about themselves. After a short overview of the general
characteristics of migrant theater troupes, and after giving several vivid examples of those
troupes in Europe, we have set our sights on the group “Non-Aligned Dilatants” which was
founded by Darko Markov, Serbian writer, amateur actor and director, who surrounds
himself with Serbian migrants and together with them makes all sorts of shows in which they
comically portray the life, work and day to day activities of our migrants in Vienna. In our
study of the “Non-Aligned Dilatants” we have used the methods of observation, informal
conversation, interview and questioners, along with the information available on the website
and Facebook page of Darko Markov. In the conclusion of the study, we have deliberated the
future of migrant theater troupes through the following aspects: problems with migrant
enthusiasm and the energy needed to hold the troupes together for extended periods of time,
secondly - to find the appropriate finances, thirdly – question of the content of plays
regarding migrant’s and post-migrant’s destiny, and finally the problem of the language used
in plays (i.e. migrant’s native or the language of the immigrant country).
