AB  - The aim of this paper is to evaluate the mobility of the Romanians in Vojvodina during the last one hundred years, and show that the dynamics of this population significantly changed its profile, making the use of both “historical Romanian community” and “Romanian diaspora” unfit to reflect the current state of this community. In the first part of the paper, the authors present the autochthonous Romanian community of Vojvodina until the First World War, to focus then on the influx of Romanian citizens registered after this date, who merged with the existing population. In the second part, the authors analyze the state policies of Yugoslavia, and later Serbia, towards their national minorities and foreign citizens in the country, and the effect they had on the Romanians within the borders of the country.

The Meglen Vlachs (Megleno-Romanians) of Serbia: a Community on the Verge of Extinction

AB  - The paper aims at presenting the Meglen Vlach community of Serbia, situated in a few villages near the border with Romania. Because of the very small number of members, this community has so far not been known to the scientific community or to the majority population [of Serbia]. The Meglen Vlachs arrived there in the 1950s from Huma (today in the FY Republic of Macedonia) and were “invisible” in official statistics as they were “concealed” among the Macedonian colonists, intended to repopulate, together with other Yugoslavs, the former German villages. However, many of them left shortly after, to return home, settle in other Macedonian localities or to migrate to Western European countries. Today, the Meglen Vlach dialect is actively spoken in Serbia by only a few people (terminal speakers, in linguistic terms), born in the inter-war period. The paper tries to determine whether their idiom is severely endangered (like the Meglen Vlach dialect in the other countries where it is spoken) or has already become an obsolete language. Finally, the article shows that the linguistic and cultural future of the Meglen Vlachs in Serbia inevitably leads to acculturation and assimilation.

AB  - In this paper we have tried to show different aspects of the Romanian emigration
from the Serbian Banat, from the perspective of religious migration. The material collected
for the purposes of this paper came to be result of ethnographic research of the Romanian
neo-Protestant diaspora, based on interviews with pastors from the Serbian Banat and the
believers in the United States and Canada and available literature. The paper is divided
into two thematic areas. In the first part, we present a brief historical sketch of the Romanians
in the Banat region. The second part is devoted to the issues of emigration to overseas
countries – the United States and Canada and to the integration of Romanians abroad.
The issue of emigration of the Romanians to North America has occupied, so far, a number
of researchers who have been trying to explain the reasons for emigration in the recent
history. Although the topic of this paper is a special type of migration – religious migration,
it cannot be considered in isolation, but only in the broader context of migrations
and significance of religion for immigrant communities. Thus, we indicate several stages
in Romanian emigration, which are allocated according to the socio-economic and political
conditions that prevailed during the twentieth century. Beside Romanians, members of
different ethnic groups have emigrated from communist countries of East and South-East
Europe to West Europe, North America or Australia. Among them, representatives of different
minority religious groups were also present. Belonging to minority religious group
that had unrecognized and marginalized status in the home country was one of the reasons
for migration – escaping religious oppression. At beginning of the 20th century, after the
Romanians from the Serbian Banat joined and formed a large number of local neo-Protestant
communities, they found themselves in the position of a double minority – ethnic and
religious. As the position of the neo-Protestant communities in different social and political
circumstances was unfavorable, some religious groups (such as the Nazarenes), began
to emigrate very early on, not only for economic reasons, but mainly in search of religious
freedom. By going to the New World, the Romanians joined already existing neo-Protestant
or they established new communities, which would greatly affect their integration into
the new environment. In a secular society of the United States and Canada, in a variety
of different religious communities of Protestant origin, the Romanian neo-Protestants were
free to exercise their religious practices with no restraints within the new communities.
AB  - U savremenim istraživanjima migracija, veza između religije i emigracije predstavlja važan element za razumevanje promena kolektivnih identiteta nakon iseljavanja, kao i odnosa prema matičnoj zemlji. U ovom radu, pored pregleda iseljavanja Rumuna tokom 20. veka, ukazujemo na ulogu religije na procese emigracije i integracije rumunske etničke manjine sa prostora srpskog Banata u Severnoj Americi. Kako je položaj verskih zajednica, naročito verskih manjina, u različitim društvenim i političkim okolnostima tokom 20. veka bio nepovoljan, pojedine verske grupe, kao što su nazareni, veoma rano počinju da emigriraju u potrazi za verskom slobodom. U slučaju Rumuna koji su pripadali neoprotestantskim zajednicama, religija se posmatra kao „kanal“ za migraciju, ali i put za bržu integraciju u novoj sredini.

AB  - This study has two main aims. The first, it seeks to introduce to a wider public what used to be the Megleno-Romanian community in the village of Gudurica, near the Serbian-Romanian border. The Megleno-Romanians arrived there in the 1950s, from Huma (Macedonia), but many of them left the village shortly after to return home or to settle in other Macedonian localities. Today, the Megleno-Romanian dialect is actively spoken only by a handful of people, born during the inter-war period. The second aim, this paper tries to analyze how the shifting Balkan borders over the last 50 years and the consequent migration of people have redefined the Megleno-Romanians' identity, as well as the role their native dialect played in this process.

From Double to Triple Minorities: Romanian neo-Protestants from the Serbian Banat in the United States and Canada

AB  - The paper is devoted to issues of emigration to overseas countries such as the United States and

AB  - Овај рад има за циљ да представи етноконфесионалну панораму пограничног подручја општине Вршац и истражи улогу симболичке границе измеђуразличитих конфесионалних заједница у овој мултикултуралној средини Баната.Посебна пажња усмерена је на најбројнију мањинску националну заједницу уопштини Вршац – Румуне. Живећи у етнички и конфесионално хетерогеномокружењу, Румуни у српском Банату, иако већином припадају Румунској православној цркви и мањим делом Румунској гркокатоличкој цркви, током XX векапрелазе и у различите неопротестантске заједнице. Рад се заснива на квалитативном теренском истраживању обављеном током 2012. и 2013. године у граду Вршцу и околним насељима са румунским становништвом, где су и најбројније неопротестантске заједнице. Један од циљева овог истраживања односио се на указивање хетерогености религијског идентитета Румуна данас, на анализу перцепције „религијски другог“, верских односа између Румуна православаца, Румуна гркокатолика и припадника неопротестантских заједница.
AB  - This paper aims to present the ethno-confessional panorama present in the border area of the town of Vršac and explore the role of symbolic borders between the different confessional communities in this multicultural environment of Banat. Special attention is given to the largest ethnic community in the municipality of Vršac – Romanians. Living in the ethnically and religiously heterogeneous environment, Romanians in Serbian Banat also joined different neo-Protestant communities during the 20th century, although they mostly belonged to the Romanian Orthodox Church and, to a lesser extent, to the Romanian Greek-Catholic church. This paper is based on a qualitative field research conducted during 2012 and 2013 in the town of Vršac and its surrounding area containing Romanian population, where the neo-Protestant communities are the most numerous. One of the goals of this research was to point out the heterogeneity of religious identity of the Romanians today and to call attention to the analysis of the perception of “the religious other”, i.e. the religious distance, between Orthodox Romanians, Greek-Catholic Romanians, and members of the neo-Protestant communities.
