AB - In recent years graphene oxide (GO)/12-tungstophosphoric acid (WPA) nanocomposites have demonstrated promising potential for electrochemical supercapacitors. However, to enhance their performance, it is necessary to modify the surface chemistry of GO to minimize the influence of basal plane oxygen groups, which hinder the material's conductivity. Additionally, some degree of structural modification of WPA is desired. In this regard, ion beam irradiation presents a promising method to simultaneously optimize surface chemistry of GO and structurally modify WPA. To accomplish this, ion beam irradiation is employed for modification of individual components as well as their nanocomposites with varying mass ratios. Different ion species, fluences and energies were utilized depending on the sample type, ranging from 10 keV C to 710 MeV Bi. Spectroscopy methods were employed to gain insight into the type and degree of structural modification in WPA. A direct correlation is observed between the parameters of the ion beams and the resulting structural changes. As the disordering increases, the structure transitions from partially modified to increased bond breaking, ultimately leading to reconnected bronze-like structures. By increasing the fluence, a gradual modification of the structure and surface chemistry of GO was possible. The effects of irradiation on GO and WPA are particularly pronounced in irradiated composites, where higher capacitance is measured.

AB - Ion beam modification of materials is notable method for achieving their unique structural, electronic, and other physicochemical properties. In the case of graphene oxide (GO) such modification of structure and surface chemistry is known to yield properties interesting for electrochemical supercapacitors. The performance of GO supercapacitors can be additionally improved by incorporating components with attractive redox properties. In this work, the influence of ion beam irradiation on synergy of GO and 12-tungstophosphoric acid (WPA) in their nanocomposite was investigated. For that, both components and their composites with different mass ratios were irradiated using different ion species, fluences and energies (from 10 keV C to 710 MeV Bi). For the irradiated WPA, results showed clear correlation between ion beam parameters, degree of structural modification and electrochemical properties. With increasing structural modification, bond breaking is first induced giving higher catalytic activity toward HER. Further irradiation resulted in an increased interconnection of polytungstate species producing lower catalytic activity and lower lithiation capacity. Irradiated GO showed modified surface chemistry, with preferable reduction of alkoxy and epoxy groups, changes in morphology and electric properties due to increased number of defects with increasing fluence, synergic effect of ion beam irradiated GO and WPA resulted in higher capacitance of irradiated composites compared to GO presumably because of interaction of structurally modified WPA with defect sites on GO thus reducing electrolyte flow along ion tracks.

AB - Gaining a momentum from newly emerging properties of nanomaterials the further enhancement and integration of various functionalities have been made possible. Also, it became apparent that interaction between nano-objects can provide additional synergy capable of yielding new or significantly improved properties. This particularly applies to the surfaces and interfaces of nanomaterials where the intimate contact between components amplifies possible contributions of interfacial interactions. Since this aspect of interaction-property relation in many nanocomposites is still insufficiently explored, it is of interest to identify to what extent the properties emerge as a result of interaction-based synergy. To address these aspects, we have investigated a nano-composite of graphene oxide (GO) and 12-tungstophosporic acid (WPA) – a combination of materials that are known for the rich “portfolio” of properties. We will present results that contribute to better the understanding of interactions between nano-objects. The results are showing how simple temperature treatment and weight ratio of components is influencing the evolution of surface, structural properties and charge storage properties – all closely connected to interactions between components. Finally, the implications on synthetic approaches and fine-tuning of the functionality of GO/WPA nanocomposites will be discussed from the perspective of the obtained results.

AB - The combination of different structural units in the anionic sublattice (PO4–SO4, PO4–NO3, PO4–CO3, etc.) can provide novel mixed polyanionic structures, which matched properties of Li-ion intercalation materials [1]. Mixed polyanion, Na4Fe3(PO4)2P2O7 (NFPP) is of special interest as a cathode for Na-ion batteries [2]. In this study, the simple citric-assisted sol-gel method was used for NFPP/C preparation, with the aim of evaluating its sodium storage capability. When both phosphates and pyrophosphates are used as precursors, the mixed NFPP phase has been successfully obtained, but only if pH is adjusted to the neutral value. Otherwise, when it comes to spontaneous sol-gel reaction (without pH adjustment), the heterostructure Na4Fe3(PO4)2P2O7/Na2FeP2O7 was formed. The obtained polyanions have been examined in terms of the structural, thermal and morphological behaviour by XRD, FTIR, TG/DTA and FESEM. Their electrochemical examination in NaNO3, by cyclic voltammetry and chronopotentiometry, reveals the substantial difference in sodium storage properties of synthesized nanocomposites. While the heterestrocture delivers the specific capacity of around 90 mAh g-1 with a poor rate capability, the mixed phase can rich theoretical capacity of ≈129 mAh g-1 (at a common scan rate), with a high rate capability of ≈80 C.

AB - Vanadium-oxide-based materials exist with various vanadium oxidation states having rich chemistry and ability to form layered structures. These properties make them suitable for different applications, including energy conversion and storage. Magnesium vanadium oxide materials obtained using simple preparation route were studied as potential cathodes for rechargeable aqueous magnesium ion batteries. Structural characterization of the synthesized materials was performed using XRD and vibrational spectroscopy techniques (FTIR and Raman spectroscopy). Electrochemical behavior of the materials, observed by cyclic voltammetry, was further explained by BVS calculations. Sluggish Mg2+ ion kinetics in MgV2O6 was shown as a result of poor electronic and ionic wiring. Complex redox behavior of the studied materials is dependent on phase composition and metal ion inserted/deinserted into/from the material. Among the studied magnesium vanadium oxides, the multiphase oxide systems exhibited better Mg2+ insertion/deinsertion performances than the single-phase ones. Carbon addition was found to be an effective dual strategy for enhancing the charge storage behavior of MgV2O6. © 2022 by the authors.

AB - Layered vanadium oxides are, due to their adaptable interlayer distance and a multivalent state of vanadium, interesting electrode materials for various kinds of metal-ion batteries with both aqueous and nonaqueous electrolytes. In this study, a precursor solution adjusted for hydrothermal synthesis of sodium vanadate Na2V6O16, is modified by addition of carbon nanopowder Vulcan XC72, and this suspension is used for an one-pot hydrothermal synthesis of sodium vanadate/C composite. XRD analysis evidenced that the obtained composite is the mixture of two vanadate phases: Na2V6O16 and NaV6O15, instead of expected single-phase vanadate. SEM and TEM observations of composite revealed that these vanadate phases emerge in a form of both nanowires and nanospheres. The heterogeneity of phases and morphology of the composite is attributed to the directional action of carbon nanoparticles as a nucleation seed. The composite, used in aqueous Li-ion battery with LiFe0.95V0.05PO4/C cathode and LiNO3 electrolyte, displayed improved charge storage (220 mAh g−1 at current rate 150 mA g−1 in the initial discharge), after dc charging, in comparison to NaV6O15 or Na2V6O16 nanowire anodes. Furthermore, versatile insertion capability of this heterostructured composite towards mono (Li+, Na+) and multivalent (Ca2+, Mg2+, Al3+) ions in aqueous electrolytes is demonstrated by Cyclic Voltametry method, where the capacity stability depends on the type of cation, following the order Al3+, Li+, Mg2+, Ca2+. Upon 100 potentiodynamic chaging/discharging cycles, Ca2+ions display much better capacitance retention than Li+ ions (i.e., 64 vs. 13% of the initial value). The coinserted electrolyte constituents, H2O and OH− species, are considered to be responsible for the improved capacity retention, making vanadium ions less strained and less soluble. The pH, the concentration of the electrolyte and the type of anion are found to influence the cyclic behavior of observed vanadate composite in Ca-containing electrolyte. These results open a new directions in vanadate electrochemistry towards more sustainaible and cheaper aqueous batteries.

The pH, the concentration of the electrolyte and the type of anion are found to influence the cyclic behavior of observed vanadate composite in Ca-containing electrolyte. These results open a new directions in vanadate electrochemistry towards more sustainaible and cheaper aqueous batteries.",

AB - While the world is facing a higher demand for lithium, its limited resources associated with the high price, are becoming problematic. Other crucial drawbacks of Li-ion batteries are their toxicity and safety concerns. Therefore, researchers are oriented towards development of non-Li batteries based on eco-friendly and earth-abundant materials to overcome drawbacks of Li-ion technology. Alternative abundant metals and their ions such as Mg and Ca could be a good choice for rechargeable batteries in terms of cost and eco-friendliness. Mg2+ and Ca2+ ions could transfer two electrons per redox process which theoretically has a positive effect on battery performance. The materials upon which multivalent ions will intercalate with fast diffusion rate are hard to find. Metal vanadium oxide (MxVyOz) materials become promising materials for rechargeable batteries, so herein, a standard sol-gel combustion route was used for the preparation of the CaV2O6 layered precursor. Two samples are synthesized from the vanadate precursor, the first when it was heated at 400 °C (CaVO) and the second when CaVO was integrated with 10 wt % of sucrose under thermal treatment at 400 °C, in Ar atmosphere (CaVO/C). Obtained CaVO and CaVO/C powders were thoroughly characterized by XRD, TG-DTA, FTIR, and Raman spectroscopy. The electrochemical performance of the obtained samples was evaluated for multivalent-ion storage in saturated aqueous electrolytic solutions of Mg (NO3)2 and Ca (NO3)2 by cyclic voltammetry and chronopotentiometry. For comparison, measurements were also done in saturated LiNO3. Results indicated that CaVO can store more Li+ ions than Mg2+ and Ca2+ ions, but CaVO in LiNO3 shows a substantial loss of capacity upon cycling, which is not observed in the case of Mg (NO3)2 and Ca (NO3)2. On the other hand, CaVO/C composite showed a significant improvement for Ca an Mg storage capacity, which exceeded capacity storage of Li+ ions. The high and stable discharge capacity of CaVO/C, amounting to 89.3 mA h g−1 at 0.5 A g-1, was obtained in Ca (NO3)2. Obtained results are promising and open novel directions regarding the use of CaV2O6 for multivalent rechargeable batteries, especially for Ca-ion batteries.

AB - Although today widely used in electronic devices and electric vehicles, lithium ion batteries encounter problem of future application, resulting from limited Li resources, relatively high costs and operational safety problems. Rechargeable magnesium batteries as a potential alternative to the Li-ion ones stand out because of their high theoretical specific capacity, high abundance of Mg resources, atmospheric stability, safety of handling, eco friendliness and low cost. Layered materials including oxides, sulphides and selenides are promising candidates for host materials for Mg2+ storage in rechargeable magnesium batteries. Slow migration of Mg2+ in the layered oxides, ascribed to the strong interaction between Mg and neighbouring O atoms, inspires researchers to look for the ways of improving their electrochemical performance. In this work, Mg-V-O material was synthesized by simple precipitation method, followed by thermal annealing. The obtained material is single-phase material consisted of MgV2O6 phase, according to the results of XRD, FTIR and Raman spectroscopy. Electrochemical test by cyclic voltammetry in aqueous solution revealed redox peaks corresponding to the insertion/deinsertion of Mg2+ ions into/from the material, but with poor current densities. In order to improve the electrochemical performance of the simply prepared Mg-V-O material, carbon was integrated with the Mg-V-O by sucrose-assisted thermal treatment. Although composed of several phases, the obtained Mg-V-O/C material exhibited around 40 times higher maximal specific current values of Mg2+ insertion/deinsertion than the Mg-V-O. Also, the electrochemical performance of the Mg-VO/ C for the insertion/deinsertion of Mg2+ ions was better than those of Al3+ and Li+ ions.

AB - In the present study we investigated the interaction between 12-tungstophosphoric acid (WPA) and graphene oxide (GO) in their nanocomposite by utilizing the loading of WPA as an intrinsic parameter for interaction tuning. The Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy, temperature-programmed desorption, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, zeta-potential measurements, thermogravimetric analysis, X-ray diffraction, Raman spectroscopy and transmission electron microscopy methods revealed that ∼5–13 wt% of WPA represents critical loading that separates two distinct contributions to GO-WPA interaction. This was explained by the self-limiting nature of GO-WPA interaction, initially controlled by high dispersion of WPA on GO (up to 13 wt%), that is eventually overpowered by WPA-WPA interaction as loading increases. As a result, the WPA agglomerates are being formed because of which the hybrid character of the nanocomposite diminishes, i.e., the properties of independent components start to be manifested to greater extent. The obtained results provide an important framework for considering possible outcomes in other 2D-0D systems, whose interaction is relevant both from fundamental and applicative point of view. Thus, the GO/WPA nanocomposite illustrates how the interactions between the components can be used for tuning the properties of nanocomposite as a whole.

AB - Lithium has a low abundance in the Earth's crust, which in a few years will lead to difficult lithium production, and therefore difficult production of lithium-ion batteries. Sodium-ion batteries, on the other hand, have been proven to be a good replacement. The material obtained from iron combined with the phosphate and pyrophosphate compounds of sodium has attracted attention as a possible cathode material for sodium-ion batteries. NaFePO4 exists in two polymorphic structures (triphylite and maricite). Maricite NaFePO4 is a more thermodynamically stable structure than triphylite NaFePO4 but doesn’t have channels for Na+ movement and electrochemical performance of this structure is low. In comparison to maricite NaFePO4, triphylite NaFePO4 (structural analogue to LiFePO4) has one-dimensional channels for Na+-ions movement and better electrochemical activity but it is not stable and is difficult to synthesize. Herein, the maricite NaFePO4 can be obtained by sintering a polyanionic compound, Na4Fe3(PO4)2P2O7, at temperatures above 600 °C, as shown by XRD. Na4Fe3(PO4)2P2O7 is synthesized by the glycine-nitrate process after which it was sintered at temperatures above 500 °C. The glycine-nitrate process was found to catalyze the decomposition of the sintered Na4Fe3(PO4)2P2O7 to the NaFePO4 maricite. The electrochemical characterization of the sintered material, evaluated in aqueous NaNO3 and LiNO3 electrolyte by cyclic voltammetry, showed poor electrochemical activity of maricite NaFePO4. By exposing the sintered material to high anodic potentials, the electrochemical activity and specific capacity of the material were increased by 50% in case of NaNO3 and 80% in case of LiNO3 relative to the pristine with low activity. After electrochemical measurements, residual powder was characterized by FTIR and Raman spectroscopy. It was shown that high anodic polarization of the material tested in LiNO3 causes the formation of triphylite LiFePO4. Similarly, it is assumed that the electrochemical activity obtained by deep anodic polarization of the material in NaNO3 electrolyte originates from the formed triphylite NaFePO4. The obtained results open novel directions regarding the use of NaFePO4 in metal-ion rechargeable batteries.

AB - ZnO nanopowders were produced using microwave processing of a precipitate and applied as a photoanode for photoelectrochemical water splitting. Two different surfactants, cetyltrimethylammonium bromide (CTAB) as the cationic and Pluronic F127 as the non-ionic one, were employed to in situ adjust the surface-to-bulk defect ratio in the ZnO crystal structure and further to modify the photo(electro)catalytic activity of the ZnO photoanode. The crystal structure, morphological, textural, optical and photo(electro)catalytic properties of ZnO particles were studied in detail to explain the profound effects of the surfactants on the photoanode activity. The ZnO/CTAB photoanode displayed the highest photocurrent density of 27 mA g−1, compared to ZnO (10.4 mA g−1) and ZnO/F127 photoanodes (20 mA g−1) at 1.5 V vs. SCE in 0.1 M Na2SO4 under visible illumination of 90 mW cm−2. A significant shift of the overpotential toward lower values was also observed when photoanodes were illuminated. The highest shift of the overpotential, from 1.296 to 0.248 V vs. SCE, was recorded when the ZnO/CTAB photanode was illuminated. The ZnO/CTAB photoanode provides efficient charge transfer across the electrode/electrolyte interface, with a longer lifetime of photogenerated electron–hole pairs and reduced possibility of charge recombination. The photoconversion efficiency was improved from 1.4% for ZnO and 0.9% for ZnO/F127 to 4.2% for ZnO/CTAB at 0.510 mV. A simple procedure for the synthesis of ZnO particles with improved photo(electro)catalytic properties was established and it was found that even a small amount of CTAB used during processing of ZnO increases the surface-to-bulk defect ratio. Optimization of the surface-to-bulk defect ratio in ZnO materials enables increase of the absorption capacity for visible light, rendering of the recombination rate of the photogenerated pair, as well as increase of both the photocurrent density and photoconversion efficiency.

AB - Zinc oxide is a semiconductor material which still, after a century of scientific research, shows great potential in modern day utilisements such as heterogenous photocatalysis of organic pollutants and as a photoanode material for efficient water splitting and oxygen generation. In this work zinc oxide was synthesized by a glycine-nitrate combustion process, which is a cheap, simple and efficient method for synthesizing transition metal oxides. The obtained powder was calcined at 400 and 500 °C and samples were characterized in detail using X-ray powder diffraction (XRPD), Fourier-trasform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), Raman spectroscopy, field emission scanning electron microscopy (FESEM), photoluminescence spectroscopy (PL) and UV-Vis diffuse reflectance spectroscopy (DRS). Photoelectrocatalytic properties were investigated via electrochemical methods: linear voltammetry (LV), chronoamperometry (CA) and impedance spectroscopy (EIS). The results show that the obtained samples are nanocrystalline wurtzite zinc oxide with no impurities, with average particle diameters of 33 nm (annealed at 400 °C) and 48 nm (annealed at 500 °C). Both samples show significant amounts of various crystal deffects. The determined zinc oxide band gap was lower than the band gap of bulk zinc oxide. Photoelectrochemical measurements revealed that this material is photostable and reactive to light. Water oxidation is enhanced by exposing the light. Finally, photocatalytic properties were tested via determining kinetic parameters of organic pollutant decomposition. Both samples showed excellent photocatalytic activity by decomposing methylene blue and phenol.

AB - Graphene oxide (GO) has shown great potential for applications in charge storage devices. Its two dimensional structure, high specific surface area as well as hydrophilicity and pseudocapacity are making it an exceptional candidate for electrochemical supercapacitors. Recent studies have shown that charge storage properties of GO can be significantly improved in nanocomposites with different inorganic materials. Therefore, in the present work we have combined GO and 12-tungstophosphoric acid (WPA) into a nanocomposite that exerts high synergic activity of the components.
Graphene oxide was synthesized via modified Hummers method and characterized by Temperature programmed desorption method (TPD), Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) and X-ray photoelectron spectrometry (XPS) in order to establish its initial surface chemistry, while thermal reduction was used for altering the composition of surface oxygen groups. Cyclic voltammetry (CV) was used to access the contribution of individual surface oxygen groups on the capacitance of graphene oxide. Analysis of initial and thermally reduced GO revealed that desorption of low-temperature groups and their conversion to phenolic and carbonyl groups is the reason for almost doubled capacitance at 500 °C.
Next, we studied the interactions between GO and WPA by altering their mass ratio in the nanocomposite. The FTIR analysis have revealed that WPA interacts with GO via terminal oxygen of a tungstate octahedron. Furthermore, these interactions are the most pronounced at 10-20 wt.% of WPA in the nanocomposite.

AB - The rich surface chemistry and large surface area of graphene oxide (GO) provide a platform for various functional materials that synergistically enhance charge storage properties of the composite. In present work we have investigated interaction between GO and 12- thungstophosphoric acid (WPA) in their nanocomposites as a function of different mass ratio of constituents. For this purpose, the Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), X-ray photoelectron spectrometry (XPS), temperature programmed desorption method (TPD) and thermogravimetric/differential thermal analysis (TGA-DTA) methods were used. FTIR spectra have shown shifts and splitting of characteristic bands of WPA as a result of interactions with GO. Both XPS and TPD methods have shown an initial decrease of the total amount of surface oxygen groups of GO, with a minimum at around 10 wt.% of WPA, above which a restoration of the amount of surface oxygen groups was noticed. TGA-DTA analysis revealed an improved thermal stability of the material up to 25 wt.% of WPA; at higher loading of WPA the thermal properties of nanocomposite became alike to the ones of individual components. The obtained results suggest optimal conditions for preparation of GO-WPA nanocomposites for electrochemical charge storage applications.

The TGA-DTA measurements of composites have shown that the major mass loss, due to carbon combustion, is shifted to higher temperatures (~500 °C vs. 380 °C of pure GO). Furthermore, when the amount of WPA is higher than 25 mass percent the nanocomposites start to act like individual components, which was also confirmed by FTIR analysis. The amount of surface oxygen groups, monitored by both TPD and FTIR methods, showed ˝V˝ shaped dependence from the quantity of WPA with minimum at about 12 mass percent of WPA. At the same time, the FTIR spectra revealed the structural changes of WPA, displayed as shifting and splitting of characteristic bands of Keggin anion structure.

The amount of surface oxygen groups, monitored by both TPD and FTIR methods, showed ˝V˝ shaped dependence from the quantity of WPA with minimum at about 12 mass percent of WPA. At the same time, the FTIR spectra revealed the structural changes of WPA, displayed as shifting and splitting of characteristic bands of Keggin anion structure.",
