AB - This book provides students, instructors, and lay-readers with a cross-cultural understanding of storytelling as an art form that has existed for centuries, from the first spoken and sung stories to those that are drawn and performed today.

This book serves as an indispensable resource for students and scholars interested in storytelling and in multicultural approaches to the arts. By taking an evolutionary approach, this book begins with a discussion of origin stories and continues through history to stories of the 21st century. The text not only engages the stories themselves, it also explains how individuals from all disciplines, from doctors and lawyers to priests and journalists, use stories to focus their readers’ and listeners’ attention and influence them.

This text addresses stories and storytelling across both time (thousands of years) and geography, including in-depth descriptions of storytelling practices occurring in more than 40 different cultures around the world. Part I consists of thematic essays, exploring such topics as the history of storytelling, common elements across cultures, different media, lessons stories teach us, and storytelling today. Part II looks at more than 40 different cultures, with entries following the same outline: Overview, Storytellers: Who Tell the Stories, and When, Creation Mythologies, Teaching Tales and Values, and Cultural Preservation. Several tales/tale excerpts accompany each entry.

Happy marriages are all alike: Marriage and self-rated health among Serbian Romа

AB - We describe how self-rated health varies with gender, type of marriage (marriage of choice
vs arranged marriage), and cultural traits among Serbian Roma. Data on 91 men and 113
women (self-reported health, demographics and family dynamics) were collected in 2016 in
Roma communities in Belgrade, Serbia. Roma in arranged marriage differ on a number of
variables in regard to Roma in marriage of choice but not in regard to self-rated health.
Gender specific analyses revealed that arranged marriages appear adaptive for both males
and females, but they seem to benefit the males and not females in terms of health. For
Roma women, a non-subordinate status was the strongest predictor of relatively “good”
subjective health. All healthy (happily married) Roma men are alike in that they think they
have subordinate wives and all healthy (happily married) Roma women are alike in that they
think they are non-subordinate to their husbands.

Role Models and Health of Serbian Roma Women

AB - We examine role model choice among Serbian Roma women and describe the relationships
found among preferred role model type and socio-economic and health variables. Data were
collected in 2015-2016 from 274 Roma women, averaging 55 years of age. Most often,
Roma women chose female family members as role models, but some women also chose
role models outside their ethic group. We discuss how the values of the two disparate role
model choices, i.e., kin and non-kin, each with associated differences in underlying
behavior, may be a critical component of influence on the Roma girls’ outcomes. Role
models can have an effect on health, and in the case of Roma women, this effect is found in
differential level of stress.

Reproductive Investment and Health Costs in Roma Women

AB - In this paper, we examine whether variation in reproductive investment affects the health of Roma women using a dataset collected through original anthropological fieldwork among Roma women in Serbia. Data were collected in 2014–2016 in several Roma semi-urban settlements in central Serbia. The sample consisted of 468 Roma women, averaging 44 years of age. We collected demographic data (age, school levels, socioeconomic status), risk behaviors (smoking and alcohol consumption), marital status, and reproductive history variables (the timing of reproduction, the intensity of reproduction, reproductive effort and investment after birth), in addition to self-reported health, height, and weight. Data analyses showed that somatic, short-term costs of reproduction were revealed in this population, while evolutionary, long-term costs were– contrariwise, Roma women in poor health contributed more to the gene pool of the next generation than their healthy counterparts. Our findings appear to be consistent with simple trade-off models that suggest inverse relationships between reproductive effort and health. Thus, personal sacrifice–poor health as an outcome–seems crucial for greater reproductive success.
